Upcycling Grain Bags To Plastic Posts

Local farmer and owner of Noralta Farms Danny Farkash has developed a one of a kind recycling machine that melts old grain bags to liquid plastic and in turn is molded into plastic posts, making it an environmentally friendly product.

The machine itself is made completely from scrap material that could have possibly ended up in landfills and is unique to look at.

“Everything is made out of scrap material. We used an old antique tractor to run the shredder for shredding the grain bags, the incinerator is an old anhydrous ammonia tank and the pipe is old scrap oil pipes, etc.” explained Farkash.

Farkash went on to explain in detail how the machine itself runs (you have to

see it to understand the process) and the products they can burn in the incinerator to produce the 500-degree heat needed to turn the old grain bags into liquid plastic.

“So how this works is we have an old antique tractor that we use to run the shredder, this shredder that we built is modified so the grain bags go through it and when they hit it there are blades that chop it all up and blow it up into the bin.

When it blows up in the bin all the dirty parts like the dirty dirt and straw and whatever blows out through the top and falls in and then goes inside this extruder. The extruder is one that we designed and built in a telescope and it churns it into this big incinerator and when it goes up into the incinerator it screws it into a pipe that runs completely through the top of the incinera-

tor, so the plastic runs through that pipe.

We put scrap wood pallets in and it heats it to 500 degrees and it works like a woodstove, it smolders it, the chimneys are off to the side so it has to burn twice before it comes out and it makes it very efficient.

When it (the liquid plastic) comes out the other end it goes into one of the molds which has a small hole at the end and when the liquid plastic comes out the hole we know it is full, then we telescope it out and we put on the next one, it (the mold) goes under the water to cool it off and while one is being loaded another one is being unloaded. This pipe has air pressure on it and it fits on the end of the hose blows it out and catches it and keeps it straight.

etc to make the 500-degree heat used to melt the shredded grain bags. ”and what’s really cool is it burns so clean that at the end of the day we have no more than a coffee can of ash. This is a one of a kind in the world. The other ones use electricity to make it, they use fossil fuels, they use all kinds of things, they have to use fossil fuels to heat it. To heat up that plastic to 500 degrees using fossil fuels makes it virtually unavailable like nobody could afford it. You could make posts but they would be too expensive, people couldn’t afford to buy them.”

According to Farkash, the plastic post they make are extremely environmentally friendly as the post can last a lifetime unlike the current wooden post which has to be replaced frequently.

We had it in a vice trying to break it and we couldn’t do it, when we did finally break one it is almost like fiberglass, it’s a different kind of plastic.” commented Farkash. “It seems harder than a fir wood, we can pound a staple in it and the staple you have to get it straight when it goes in there, but with wood when it gets wet it shrinks and then the staple comes out and so these plastic posts don’t do that because water doesn’t affect it. Farkash also says that the counties have acres of grain bags with no place to go, like a mountain of tires, and said that 37 to 38 counties have bags all over the place that they don’t know what to do with them.

“The counties have been shipping them into the States and have to pay the trucking to do that, to get rid of it and there is an environmental fee they have on the plastic so they do get paid for that end of it. I would just like to recycle it here locally, why not?

said Farkash. He also went on to say that, “we are taking a product they are burying and they don’t know what to do with and we are reusing it to refine it into something that people can use. Waste product to refine waste products and I think that has got to be the next phase.”

Farkash says that he has no engineering background but that he builds a lot of stuff and that he is really into recycling and that he utilizes items that people would throw away.

“I think we need a whole new generation that can think outside the box, if they can it will change the world like Henry Ford did.

I think it’s really cool in a small

town with the farm sector doing whatever and everyone is worried about COVID that we could utilize stuff that people throw away. I think right now the brightest future in industry is recycling stuff, when you think about it that we can take wood pallets and cooking oil that is burnable and I use it as energy to recycle and make plastic posts,” said Farkash.

A Special Meeting of Council was planned for December 8 prior to the provincial COVID-19 update presented by Premier Jason Kenney.

After moving into an enhanced zone for COVID19, the Vermilion Town Council were looking to discuss the possibility of implementing a temporary masking bylaw. Council members were some-

what divided on the issue; however, most did not seem particularly for or against either side.

“We had citizens and businesses asking for it, and we had input from both sides,” said CAO George Rogers.

Due to a provincial announcement delivered by Premier Jason Kenney which included a mandatory masking bylaw province-wide, the meeting was cancelled.

This Year Marks Audubon’s 121th Annual Christmas Bird Count

The Vermilion River Naturalist Society invites all birdwatchers, regardless of skill level, to participate in the longest-running community science survey, the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC). On December 19, 2020, birders and nature enthusiasts in Vermilion and area will take part in this tradition, many rising before dawn to participate.

We realize that many people are looking for new challenges and opportunities this year. Being part of a major citizen science initiative can be a very rewarding experience. Whether you are able to go hiking or driving around your rural area for several hours or have a bird feeder set up near a window and can spend an hour with your coffee or tea counting the birds at your feeder, you are collecting invaluable data for bird population research.

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count utilizes the power of volunteers to track the health of bird populations at a scale that scientists could never accomplish alone. Data compiled in Vermilion and area will record every individual bird and bird species seen in a specified area, contribut-

ing to a vast community science network that continues a tradition stretching back 121 years.

“The Christmas Bird Count is a great tradition and opportunity for everyone to be a part of 121 years of ongoing community science,” said Geoff LeBaron, Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count director, who first started leading the community science effort in 1987. “Adding your observations to twelve decades of data helps scientists and conservationists discover trends that make our work more impactful. Participating in the Christmas Bird Count is a fun and meaningful way to spend a winter day for anyone and everyone.”

When combined with other surveys such as the Breeding Bird Survey, Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count provides a picture of how the continent’s bird populations have changed in time and space over the past hundred years. The long-term perspective is vital for conservationists. It informs strategies to protect birds and their habitat.

It helps identify environmental issues with implications for people as well.

Birders of all ages are welcome to contribute to this fun community science project, which provides ornithologists with

a crucial snapshot of our native bird populations during the winter months. Each individual count is performed in a count circle with a diameter of 24 kilometers. At least ten volunteers, including a compiler to coordinate the process, count in each circle. The volunteers break up into small parties and follow assigned routes, which change little from year to year, counting every bird they see. In most count circles, some people also watch feeders instead of following routes.

The Vermilion Christmas Bird Count will follow all Covid protocols that are posted on the Alberta Government website for December 19, 2020. https://www.alberta.ca/guidance-documents.aspx Unfortunately, this means we will probably not be able to hold our post-count potluck supper to recount the day’s highlights but watch the paper for this year’s results.

Dear editor, Alberta Crown Land Vision For those who call Alberta home, we are blessed to live in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. It doesn’t matter where you hang your hat in this great province. Whether you live in the south along the wide open prairies, the north under the huge boreal forest or near the iconic eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, we all cherish our rich diversity of landscapes and our abundance of resources.

Our shared love for the land and our desire to protect it for our grandchildren and their children is what drives us. It also motivated our ancestors. In Alberta’s early days, the government set aside public lands to be managed by the Crown. Later, a parks system was also set aside to make sure all Albertans could enjoy the outdoors through recre-

Together, parks and public lands – known as Crown lands – were administered under one system to be managed by the government for all Albertans and Indigenous peoples. Today, our Crown lands cover a vast amount of our province – about 60% and are used for recreation, conservation and economic development.

Many existing policies were drafted with the notion in mind that specific areas of crown land only have one use. Crown land policies need to recognize the fact that the land owned by all Albertans is used for multiple purposes, included those listed above.

The Alberta Crown Land Vision is our way forward. This vision will guide our work toward creating a common-sense approach to Crown land management by finding the right balance, simplifying

To address the challenges of the increasing demand for recreation and trails in parks and on public land, we have committed to bring forward new measures, such as a Trails Act and fee framework, that will help deliver on those expectations. When you made your own mincemeat, there is no comparison to commercial, store bought mincemeat. The real stuff is really good, and I fine the commercial mincemeat barely palatable. Mincemeat is a traditional Christmas dish; however, few people have tasted homemade mincemeat tarts, and many people are surprised that there is actually meat in mincemeat. The mincemeat that you can buy in jars at the supermarket does not contain any meat, but instead has high amounts of sugar and is very tangy.

The original recipe came from our friend who is an expert butcher by trade. It is my husband that always makes a double batch, and did so this year even though no family is allowed to come home with COVID restrictions. He has adjusted the recipe here and there and now it tastes even better. The meat can be roasted beef, moose. elk or venison. Select dark raisins for more of their beneficial resveratol. Resveratol has heart healthy benefits and has been shown to prevent the cold virus from replicating. The spices offer additional health benefits such as the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties of cloves, the antioxidant and detoxifying properties of allspice, the antioxidant benefits

Christmas Mincemeat Tarts

of nutmeg and the blood sugar regulating properties of cinnamon. Orange peel contains hesperatin, which helps to lower blood pressure, regulate cholesterol and reduce inflammation. The history of mincemeat goes back to England where it was a Christmas favorite of Kings. Some recipes will add 1/2 cup of rum or brandy to the mixture. We have not tried that yet.

Mincemeat Tarts 2 cups roasted meat put through a

food chopper 1 cup suet 4 cups unsweetened apple sauce 2 1/2 c brown sugar 2 1/2 cups raisins 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice, and the peel 1 cup vinegar 1 tablespoon nutmeg 1 tablespoon allspice 1 tablespoon cloves

4 teaspoons cinnamon Roast the meat, cool and put through a food chopper. In a large bowl combine all the ingredients. Use a reamer to extract the orange juice and then chop the orange peel in the food chopper and stir it into the mixture. Spoon into unbaked tart shells and bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. This recipe makes 6 dozen tarts, they freeze well in a tightly sealed container.

If you drive near Dewberry, you will drive near a farm site that has been pre s er ve d for i t s history by the Alberta Government. It is the Greenridge Farm Site and on the property, which is privately owned, there are buildings and structures that date back as much as a century. From the well house and blacksmith shop to the main house and even a moveable teacherage, the farm of 64.7 hectares has plenty of history associated with it.

The main aspect of its histor y is t h at i t wa s h o m e to s o m e ex p er i mental ideas in progressive farming and construction from the early 20th century. On the property was a large

mixed-farming operation, including the use of poured concrete buildings at a time when that was rare. The use of cast-in-place for an above-ground construction was ver y unusual. On top of that, the farm was also the first in the area to have electricit y and running water. Owned initially be Lee Green, who had come to the area in 1909 and built up the farm over the next few years.

Beyond that, it was the first farm in the area to have purpose-built structures including a blacksmith shop, machine shop and a pig barn. It was also on this proper t y that Green invented the Dual Block construction block, which is a light-weight option for construction, was invented.

Going even further for the innovations on this property, it was the first

in the area to have a stock of purebred Belgian horses, and a huge herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle.

Green was also known for being a mentor to new settlers and hired many people to work for him, making him a leading agriculturalist in the area and the province. His property also served as the gathering place for dances and for organizations such as the United Farmers of Alberta, the United Church and the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.

Green also built a teacherage on the property to provide a home for the teachers of Riverton School in 1948, and his farm was such a model of

farming that it was often called Greenlawn or Greenridge.

Green and his wife Aleta were heavily involved in local events as well and Green would run, unsuccessfully, as the CCF candidate for the Battle River riding in the 1949 federal election.

Buffalo Trail Public Schools – Cornerstone Co-op Bags For Breakfast Program Donates To BTPS Schools

Submitted The Cornerstone Co - op suppor ts a Bags for Break fast program which funds donations from the Co-op to many BTPS schools. This program encourages our staff, students and families to use recycled bags which will lessen the amount of single use plastic in the landfills and increase how much the schools can feed students. This year the Cornerstone Co-op donated a total of $8,635 to Amisk, Clandonald, Delnorte-Innisfree, Dewberry, Provost Public, Wainwright Elementary, Wainwright High, Mannville, Vermilion Outreach, Vermilion Elementary, and J.R. Robson Schools. This year, the Superintendent, Rhae-Ann Holoien, Deputy Superintendent, Michelle Webb, and the Assistant Superintendent, James Troddin pumped gas at the Wainwright Co-op to support the Bags for Breakfast program and even did a TikTok video with our Co-op partner.

Canadian Wheat Research Priorities 2020 Through 2022 Released

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Cereals Canada Publish Wheat Research Priorities through to 2022.

Winnipeg, December 9, 2020 – Today, on behalf of the entire value chain, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Cereals Canada released updated wheat research priorities through to 2022.

The Economic Strategy Tables and Budget 2020 have both identified Agriculture as a key sector to drive Canadian economic growth. The Economic Strategy Table set a challenging growth target of increasing agricultural and agri-food exports to exports to $75 billion annually by 2025. Agricultural growth will create jobs for Canadians in both urban and rural Canada and in every region of the country.

Canada’s wheat sector is at the heart of Canadian agriculture. Achieving our ambitious export goals will only be accomplished if the profitability of this vital component of the industry increases for every part of the value chain, including farmers. Research and technology will drive the necessary growth in productivity and profitability. Collaboration between public and private researchers and full communications between each link in the value chain will significantly enhance our ability to deliver the innovation the sector requires.

National wheat research priorities have been developed and refined through a

unique national collaboration of farmers, federal and provincial governments, public research institutions, exporters and processors, led by Cereals Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

The five research priorities are: • improving wheat yield • improving wheat yield reliability • increasing sustainability • improving food safety • increasing our ability to respond to consumer needs, both internationally and domestically, by enhancing the feedback mechanisms between purchasers, researchers, and producers.

The first repor t on priorities was released in 2017. Today’s installment refines the objectives and measurements for the five research priority themes and updates the priorities based on new understanding of the value chain. The report lays out the priority areas of research that public, private and producer groups should focus on for the next two years in order to ensure that this $7 billion wheat industry provides growing and sustainable profitability into the future.

Today’s report lays out a roadmap for innovation for public and private researc her s, farmer- led org anizations that fund innovation, and governments who continue to invest in wheat research and development. The report also provides a first picture of where research dollars are spent, allowing the value chain to measure work against the

established goals and refine objectives for success.

Stakeholders in every region of the country can use this document to better understand where efforts and funding should be focused in order to achieve greater success for Canada’s important wheat sector.

New Restrictions For Entire Province- COVID-19 Update

Since the end of October cases of COVID-19 have spiked drastically in Alberta bringing with it higher cases of hospital and ICU admissions threatening the Alberta Health Care system according to Premier Jason Kenney and Chief Medical Officer of Alberta Dr. Deena Hinshaw.

In a reaction to the (worrisome) num ber of c ases, the g over nment imposed the first round of restrictions in enhanced areas as well as some provincial restrictions on November 24.

With the current daily number of positive cases not dropping and bending the curve back down Premier Jason Ke n n ey, a l o n g w i t h H e a l t h M i n i s ter Tyler Shandro, and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hinshaw announced even tougher provincial mandatory restrictions on December 8.

“I am here today to layout additional public health measures which we have concluded are necessary to protect our health care system and to save lives,” stated Alberta Premier Jason Kenney in his opening remarks of the press conference. Kenney also went on to say that, “as cold weather has caused people to move indoors and the virus to spread more quickly, we now have 654 people coping with COVID–19 in our hospitals, including 112 in intens i ve c are u n i t s. T h at nu m b er h a s grown by 600 per cent since the last week of October. Six hundred and forty Albertans have now passed away from COVID-19.”

Ac cording to Kenney due to the influx of hospitalizations, thousands of surgeries have been canceled and thousands of medical procedures have had to be canceled or postponed and asked listeners to pause and think about that for a second. To think of the people it is affecting. “ For ever y o n e of t h o se p e o p l e affected this means anxiety and stress sometimes it means real physical pain and suffering as their health deteriorates. For some Alber tans delaying their health care will tragically mean a shorter lifespan.” Kenney stated.

Kenney also addressed the economic, social, and mental devastation in which the further restrictions can have on the people of Alberta, and

explained that it is not something they take lightly. “ Those of us in government who frankly have secure paychecks can too easily make the mistake of thinking of these policies as abstractions, it’s too easy to think of them as just words on a piece of paper, or to think of the social and economic activity, in other words, to think of our lives together as a community as some kind of a switch that the government can just flick on and off at will, but behind every one of these restrictions lie crushed dreams and terrible adversity,” Kenney stated.

H e w e n t o n t o s ay, “ T h e m e n t a l , emotional and health consequences o f t h e s e d e c i s i o n s a r e d eva s t a t ing and leaders should not turn away from admitting that to contemplating that and to balancing that off against the public health imperative because these devastating impacts for many will be long lasting. I also understand that to many people, these policies, these restrictions seem unjust, I’ve made no secret of the fact that Alberta’s government has been reluctant to use extraordinary powers to damage or destroy livelihoods in this way.”

As Kenney continued to address the people of Alberta through the televised announcement he reiterated that they have stressed education together with personal and collective responsibility from the beginning and also went on to explain that while the health care system is under growing stress that they have the capacity if stretched to treat more than 2000 COVID patients in hospital beds and hundreds in intensive care but it would have a disastrous effect.

“But hear this, we also know that creating that additional COVID capacity in our hospitals will have a catastrophic impact on the health of thousands of Albertans as their surgeries and other care is canceled or postponed indefinitely,” said Kenney.

Recognizing the fact that these new restrictions will have a devastating effect on the livelihood of hundreds of thousands of small and medium businesses Kenney announced that they are quadrupling the small and medium size business relaunch grant from $5,000 to $20,000 while also lowering the eligibility threshold to qualify for

the grant from 50 per cent of revenue lost to 30 per cent and will be making it retroactive to March.

A f t e r a l e n g t hy a d d r e s s by t h e Premier, Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro proceeded to outline in great detail the new current measures which either took effect immediately or on D e c e m b e r 13 . T h o s e r e s t r i c t i o n s are as follows: effective immediately no indoor or outdoor social gatherings are permitted public or private.

All in- person gatherings indoor or outdoor must be limited to those in the same household with people living alone able to have two non-household contacts but these must be the same two individuals since it was put in place on November 24. The rules for co-parenting, service visits from family care providers, health and child care providers remain the same since November 24.

Mandator y indoor public masking requirements provincially went into effect immediately and pertains to all public spaces indoors, indoor workplaces, and facilities outside the home.

It applies to all employees, visitors and the general public. The only exception is for farming operations and rental accommodations.

A mandator y work from home measure is implemented across the province effective December 13 unless employers determine that a physical presence is required for operational effectiveness.

Also, effective December 13 retail stores may remain open but must cut their customer occupancy to 15 per cent of the fire code occupancy. Stores will be allowed to a minimum of five people and strongly encourages curbside pickup or delivery when able to do so.

Shopping malls and places of worship may remain open but are also limited to 15 per cent of fire code occupancy. Food courts in malls must be takeout only.

All restaurants, pubs, lounges and c afes will be c losed for in - per son service but can offer takeaway, delivery, and drive-thru services.

Casinos, bingo halls, gaming and racing entertainment centers, horse trac ks, b owling alleys, p o ol halls, legions, private clubs and nightclubs, personal and wellness services includ-

ing hair and nail salons, massage, tattoos and piercing as well all recreation facilities and that includes fitness centers, rec centers, pools, spas, gym studios, day and overnight camps, indoor rinks and arenas and community halls, libraries and science centers, interpretive centers, museums, galleries, amusement, and water parks as well as all tradeshows, conference centers and banquet halls will all be closed.

Shandro said that outdoor rinks and downhill ski hills can remain open if public health measures are followed.

Hotels may remain open and of fer room ser vice for guests but cannot offer in-dining services or allow access to spas, pools or recreation.

Health ser vi c es, physiotherapy, acupuncture, emergency ser vices, social or protective services, and shelters for vulnerable people, childcare, not-for-profit community kitchens, soup kitchens and religious kitchens are still available for in-person services. Also all closures from the November 27 public health measures are still in effect.

The above-listed restrictions affect businesses in Vermilion and surrounding areas. Our hair salons, massage therapists, bars, pubs, wellness centers etc. are forced to close their doors and Karen Bardoel owner/operator of Karen’s Klassic Kuts hair salon is one member of our community who will be affected by the current restrictions.

“I assumed a shutdown was going to be inevitable as the numbers continued to rise in our county. I am disappointed that the shutdown happened during the Christmas season when most businesses expect to be their busiest. But hopefully, everyone stays safe and we are open again in four weeks,” said Bardoel.

Shoppers Drug Mart in Vermilion has announced that they are working with reduced hours.

“Our store is currently working with limited staffing, as we have proactively put a number of employees into selfisolation. In order to best continue to support our community at this time, we have reduced our hours to 10 a.m.

GRANDE PRAIRIE - Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) and Lakeland College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to pursue collaborative ventures in Alberta’s strong agricultural region. This student-focused partnership will see both colleges working together to create agricultural educational opportunities that are innovative and inclusive for students.

Engaging students, community and industry through agricultural advancements will achieve economic growth, enhance workforce skills and continue commitment to the diversification and innovation of the sector. This partnership supports GPRC’s recent commitment in its five-year administrative strategy, 5GPRC, in prioritizing economic and community development, student experience and innovation and partnership. Working together, GPRC and Lakeland College, will maximize creating educational opportunities in agriculture, collaborative research programs, student-life activities, and the potential for infrastructure and equipment sharing.

“Collaboration is a key aspect of what

we do at Lakeland College,” says Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, President and CEO of Lakeland College. “It’s essential that we work with our post-secondary partners to ensure that we are giving our students the best opportunities we can while being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. The colleges also share similar roots in prioritizing the importance of agricultural education and research in our regions. Lakeland College began in 1913 as the Vermilion School of Agriculture, Alberta’s first agriculture school, while GPRC Fairview Campus started as a school of agriculture and home economics known as Fairview College in 1951.

Calving Season Timing And Transition – Fast Forward, Rewind, Or Press Play

For many cow-calf producers, calving season is a favourite time of year. After waiting 283 days, farmers are finally able to see the result of their breeding decisions as well as welcome a new crop of animals that will likely become a large portion of their annual revenue.

Just as every farm operates with an independent set of circumstances, and every farmer is unique themselves, calving season is going to look different on every operation. There is no one right method or time of year to calve a cow herd.

There are many interconnected variables that affect – or are affected – by calving season. Length and timing of breeding season, bull power, grazing and feed resources, target weaning time, marketing windows and methods, heifer development, mortgage payment deadlines, herd size, available labour, infrastructure, and tradition are a few different factors that play an important part in calving.

Looking at survey data over the past thirty years, there has been a trend, at least in western Canada, with producers transitioning from late winter/early spring calving in February and March, to later calving in April, May or June. Whether producers are thinking about making a shift in timing, or simply reassessing their decision to calve when they do, they should think about the risks and rewards of timing their most critical phase in cowcalf operations. What are the advantages or disadvantages of keeping the same season? What are the greatest challenges during calving on my farm and how can I manage them? What are the benefits of my existing calving season, and what are the drawbacks? How much labour do I need and how much do I have to get the job done?

The following producers have done their homework and planned ahead before shifting their seasons back or ahead in order to meet the needs of their particular farms and families.

Late Summer/Fall Calving Taralea Simpson, Portage la Prairie, MB Taralea Simpson has been calving her Simmental/Angus commercial cow herd in August and September for many years.

Growing up, her family traditionally calved during January and February. “I did that for a long time on my own and there was always something going wrong,” Simpson says, adding that scours, frozen ears, and sleep deprivation made for some challenging winter calving seasons.

In addition to raising cattle, Simpson works as an agronomist, which also played a role in her decision to opt for a later calving program. “I decided to switch to the fall, I’m not as busy with work, I have more time to make sure everyone is doing okay,” she explains. The herd is cleaner and they have fewer health issues, she says. “It’s an easier way of doing things, I wanted something that didn’t lose as many calves,” she adds.

Simpson’s farm is set up for rotational grazing and her calving pasture is right close at home. She checks calving cows daily to make sure there aren’t any problems but notes that she rarely has issues with dystocia. “The calves might be a bit smaller but you are kind of selecting for that, you want calving ease on the pasture,” she explains. She notes that calving ease on her farm has generally improved over time because over the years she has been retaining heifers from

cows that are calving easily out on the pasture.

Catching newborn calves early for processing is key. “Fall calves tend to be like deer and the cows hide them,” Taralea says. “I try to do my very best to tackle them within the first day or two for castration, sneak up on them when mom’s not around,” she explains and adds that her approach works 80 per cent of the time, and she processes the remaining few when cows and calves start coming back to the yard when the snow flies. She notes that one consideration with fall calving is producers must plan ahead for more feed.

“Your feed consumption is higher, those calves are 250 pounds right now and in another couple months they are 350 to 400 pounds and eating a third as much as their mother,” she says. “You do use a lot more hay through winter than those cows that are coasting through the winter and calving in spring.” She has an area set up with calf panels, and provides calves with their own bale of hay and a bit of grain that they don’t have to compete with the cows for.

The calves stay on their mothers through winter and Simpson typically weans and ships them directly to market in the first two weeks of May. “Shipping usually happens whenever I’m not busy at work or when the weather is too wet to be busy at work,” she says, and adds that timing coincides with the grass cattle market.

When it comes to breeding, Simpson says that conception rates are similar to what they were during earlier calving, however snowy weather can impact a bulls’ ability to breed. “Out on the pasture, the bulls have good traction and they can get things done before it gets snowy and slippery,” she says. In the past when winter hits sooner, the bull is slower to cover cows due to deep snow or slippery footing, which can impact the length of the subsequent calving season. She says it’s important to supplement during breeding season and make sure the herd is getting adequate minerals and protein.

Late Winter/Early Spring Calving Randi Wenzel, Central Butte, SK Randi Wenzel and her family operate a large, mixed commercial cattle and cropping farm in south central Saskatchewan.

They used to calve from mid-March until mid-May or later, however as their farm continues to evolve, they are looking toward transitioning to an earlier, more condensed season that starts in February.

“Due to the fact that we are a mixed operation and the grain side is getting to be pretty big, I’m trying to move calving up,” says Wenzel, who also works full time as an agrologist. Her busy off-farm work season hits in April and May, the same time that they are planting crops at home.

She prefers having the majority of cows calved out before they get busy in the full swing of seeding. “By taking another 20 days out of our breeding cycle, we can get everything processed, and shipped to pasture by the last week in April,” she explains.

Wenzel says preparation and proper facilities are key when calving in the winter. While the weather can be cold in February, she adds that calving in April in their area when the wind picks up and spring blizzards hit can take a toll as well.

“Overall February conditions have been fairly decent,” she says, and adds they built a calving barn about three years ago to help offset the risk of unpredictable weather. They have been surprised

by the occasional early arrival or set of twins but have found that calving cameras are a useful monitoring tool and have helped the family save calves. They have cameras installed in their barn as well as outside to help them keep a close eye on calving cows and newborns, but Wenzel cautions it is best to use them in combination with walking the pens. “Cameras can’t see everything so we still walk and check areas on foot as well,” she says.

They have been continuously improving their calving area, removing old wood corrals and replacing them with heavyduty portable corral panels and gates that can be moved, rearranged and adapted as their needs change.

Moving up the breeding season a few days has not been a challenge for the cows to adjust to. “They adjusted pretty well, and if they aren’t in season they are culled,” Randi notes. Heifers are calved out at the same time as their main herd, but they would consider calving heifers a bit earlier. The bulls are turned out approximately 30 days after calves are processed and they use Charolais, Red Angus, and Simmental genetics on their herd.

They typically wean and sell calves at the beginning of November, again timing those events around harvesting and other fall farm work like spraying. They’ve also noticed their calves are bigger now at shipping time than before. “We’ve changed up our herd sires and are being a little more aggressive on that,” Wenzel says, adding that earlier calving is likely a factor as well.

Late Spring/Early Summer Calving Jason and Karla Hicks, Parkbeg, SK Jason and Karla Hicks and their family operate Bluestone Stock Farms, a large Angus operation. They shifted away from winter calving to a later season, May and June, and maintain a defined breeding season of 60 days.

“Our commercial cows used to calve at the end of March and April, and we always get snow in April and don’t have anywhere to put large numbers, so we went a month later to miss those snow storms,” Jason explains. “There’s less death loss, less work,” he adds. “Calving in summer is easier on the marriage,” Karla adds, laughing. The family was awarded Saskatchewan’s TESA (The Environmental Stewardship Award) in 2015, and summer calving has become a complementary fit with their stewardship principles. “Now we calve out on grass, in rolling hills, coulees, trees. It’s set up naturally to be good calving grounds,” Jason explains. “I think what we really found was that working with Mother Nature was a bonus and calving as the grass was turning green – there are a lot of benefits,” Jason says.

They calve bred heifers as well as earlier-bred community pasture cows and some purebreds slightly earlier than the main herd, in a field closer to the yard.

“This way you eliminate issues of pen calving, don’t have scours issues, and we think our heifers mother up a bit better this way,” Jason says. The weather can still be unpredictable however. “Out in the open, when the heifers are calving, in April you do get a snow storm,” Jason says. While most of their calving pastures have natural shelter, with their first-calvers, they offset the risk of cold or trampled calves by planning ahead and giving the heifers access to pre-existing corrals or facilities if the weather turns bad.

They’ve noticed since their transition they’ve had fewer calving problems.

“There has been natural selection for

that over time, for the entire herd,” Jason notes. They did not have any conception issues as they moved breeding and calving back. They graze their tame grass earlier in the season and save their nutritious native grass for breeding season, especially during dry years.

One downside of pasture calving has been predator attacks. Their ranch is natural terrain for coyotes and cougars, which has resulted in losses in the field and even in their corrals when they were still. “We have a huge coyote population,” says Jason. “Even 15 years ago we had coyotes take down yearlings right in the feedlot.”

After calving, they will brand, castrate, vaccinate and tag calves in four or five branding days in July. Later, they wean calves from mid to late November. “Our weaning weights didn’t change that much,” says Karla, after they backed calving off. “We didn’t change the bulls we bought or the type of cow we had.

When those calves are born in nice weather, they hit the ground running and start growing,” she explains, adding that winter-born calves use a lot of energy just to keep a calf warm. As groups of calves are weaned, they are sorted and backgrounded, trying to avoid selling in the fall when the majority of calves hit the marketplace. They watch markets closely, and will sell their commercial calves anytime after weaning through to the following August after grassing them as yearlings in the summer.

Like most beef producers, Jason and Karla put thought into their plan to transition to a later calving season. They adapted and learned along the way as they worked to adjust their calving season to make the best use of their human and natural resources. “This is what we’ve figured out for us,” Jason says. “It might not work for everyone else, but we just need it to work for us.”

Our elementary students have been very busy writing letters to the senior members of our community. Letters written by St. Jerome students were sent out in the fall to Seniors throughout Vermilion, which were greatly appreciated by those who received them. These letters are the winter edition and we hope they are enjoyed too! Students in grades 1 & 2 also wrote letters to Santa Claus and are eagerly awaiting a reply!

Grade 2 students in Mrs. Lysons’ class wrapped up their Superflex Program, put on by Miss. Kari with VIBE. They all received a cape to decorate on the last day, as a visual reminder of the valuable strategies they have learned. Miss Kari also worked with students in kindergarten and grade one to paint beautiful pots filled with Christmas cacti to give as gifts to all the staff who support learning at our school. They turned out beautifully, and staff felt very honored by this token of kindness.

Students in Ms. Svenungard, Mrs. Lysons, and Mrs. Schmidt’s classes took advantage of the beautiful weather this

past week and went skating at the outdoor rink. The school is blessed to have skates to loan children who don’t have them. It was amazing to see the growth and progress that these kids made over the week.

We had lots of fun staying active outside!

The grade 1 children in Ms. Svenungard’s class were sad to say goodbye to Miss. Howard. Elaina Howard is a practicum student at Lakeland College who recently completed a four week practicum in the grade one classroom. The students loved when she played outside with them and she will be greatly missed. Best of luck in your next adventure Miss. Howard!

As of this date, we have almost 50 students who have reached their year end AR goal already. All students who reach their year end goal prior to January 31, are rewarded by getting to order a new book for our Library Learning Commons. This reward program would not be possible if not for the Vermilion Credit Union’s donation to our school. A big thanks goes out to them.

W i t h s o m a ny d o o m a n d g l o o m announcements lately, Vermilion had a brief moment of Christmas cheer as Santa made a surprise visit to the downtown core on December 7. “ Ever y thing has been so gloomy lately, and with it being only a couple of weeks before Christmas I thought I would make a surprise visit to see if I could help cheer some people up,� said Santa.

During his walk-a-bout Santa was ver y cautious to follow all physical distancing rules and while he chose not to do his yearly candy cane giveaway due to COVID he did stop and allow parents to take pictures of their little

ones and waved to children and passerby’s as they waved from their vehicles. “You have to be very careful now with COVID but there are still ways that children can have their picture taken while maintaining the distance required. I didn’t pass out candy canes this year because I think it is better to be safe than sorry,� explained Santa.

Santa also went on to say that his walk-a-bout allowed him to see who is being naughty and who is being nice this holiday season. “I was only there for a very short time, but it still gave me the opportunity to observe some of the local children and adults and from what I could see many people will be on the nice list this year,�

Westman Farms 21st Annual Sale

On December 7, Westman Farms held its 21st annual heifer sale.

The annual sale was started by the grandfather and father of current owner of Westman Farms, Derek Westman.

The sale had buyers from British Columbia to Ontario buying by lot, each varying in size. In total, Westman Farms sold 372 heifers with a $3085 sale average. Coolers were given to those who were the highest sellers and who bought the most in volume.

“I appreciate the agricultural history and I think agriculture has a bright future,” said Derek Westman, “and I appreciate all the help and support we’ve gotten.”

Health Canada Approves COVID-19 Vaccine

As of December 9, 2020, Canada has become the second country to approve the Pfizer- BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine.

“Health Canada has determined that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine meets the department’s stringent safety, efficacy and quality requirements for use in Canada,” said Health Canada in a statement.

The United Kingdom began to vaccinate December 8, and according to www.

in Calgary, and from University of Alberta and Royal Alexandra hospitals in Edmonton, will be the first frontline care staff to receive the vaccine in Alberta. www.canada.ca also stated that the Pfizer – BioNTech vaccine needs to be stored at ultra-cold temperatures (below -70 degrees Celsius), therefore, the company is planning to ship the doses directly to provinces. There are 14 sites in 10 provinces that are set up to receive the vaccines.

Lloydminster RCMP Investigates Shooting

Lloydminster, Sask. – Lloydminster RCMP are currently investigating an incident which happened at approximately 8:30 a.m. in the 4600 block of 47 Avenue, where an adult male

was shot outside on the sidewalk and suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. A group of males were approached by a small black car with several occupants, and one male was shot after a brief exchange. The car was seen fleeing eastbound from the scene on 47 Avenue. It is

believed the parties were known to each other and this was a targeted incident. Police do not believe there is additional risk to the public.

Lloydminster RCMP are continuing to investigate this matter. Anyone who has information on this matter is asked to contact the Lloydmin-
