The students of Vermilion Elementary School were treated to soccer instruction courtesy of Challenge Soccer. Connor, a Challenge Soccer instructor from Great Britain, spent time with each group to develop dribbling, defending, passing, shielding and teamwork skills. The games encouraged active participation and students had a great time learning and playing. The Kindergarten students have had an exciting time watching our chicks hatch and grow. They have learned a lot about the needs of animals and how to care for them. As a part of this learning, the students have joined with Grade 5 partners to research their favourite animal and create a digital bulletin board on their iPads with pictures and videos they found on KidRex, a child-safe Google search site. To extend their learning about animals, the Kindergarten students went to the Vermilion Veterinary Clinic to find out more about how animals that are hurt,

O u r 2 016 G r a d exercises went smoothly and enjoyed by all who attended! A special thank you to Mr. Rob Williams from CTV news for coming down and delivering a very entertaining and inspirational speech, Mr. Darryl Maron, our MC, for providing our audience with lots of laughs, Mr. Bob Allen and Mrs. Alice McLaughlin from BTPS for attending and delivering inspirational messages to our Grads, Dragon Hare for capturing some of the moments of the day, and Mr. Maron’s lighting crew for their fantastic job! Grad 2016 was great, and our grads are ‘On Top Of the World’ and ready for the next chapter in their lives! Our Kinderkids have officially finished the lowercase letters of the alphabet. They are using these new skills to write words and sentences in their “I Can Write” scribblers. They continue to create, read and write rhyming words as well. Our Grade 2’s continue to read daily and complete AR quizzes. The students have been interested lately in reading ‘Scaredy Squirrel’ books. In their writing unit, they have been focusing on ’good word choice’. Soon students will start an autobiography booklet.
Mrs. Campbell’s Grade 3’s have started reading the novel “The Prince of the Pond” which ties in with their Animal Life Cycle Unit in science. Students will learn about the characteristics and life cycle of a frog in this entertaining novel. Most of their reading selections will focus on animals and life cycles in upcoming weeks. Students in Grade 4 are working on telling time to the hour, half hour, quarter past, quarter to and to the minute. The Grade 5’s have recently started a unit called Shape and Space. They are working with our kinderkids on shapes like a circle, square, and prisms and hope they can help them learn the shapes. Grade 6’s have been busy looking at the Solar System. The students were surprised to learn about why Pluto is now considered a dwarf planet. They are going to be creating their own models of the solar system. Mrs. Hinton reports that the Elementary Students’ Union Cakewalk fundraiser raised over $260! It’s not too late to take part in training for a triathlon. The start date is now Wednesday, May 25. Remember your bike, helmet, running shoes, water bottle, hat, and sunscreen. Open to everyone in Kindergarten to Grade 12. Upcoming: Movie Night – June 3.
