2016

allowed us to celebrate Jack’s Helping Hand’s ten-year anniversary, as we were originally founded on April 17, 2006. Thanks to all of our wonderful supporters over these past ten years and our community’s consistent generosity, Jack’s Helping Hand has kept up with the ever-growing needs and demands of our children who have cancer, are medically fragile and have special needs. The Jack Ready Imagination Park continues to move forward and we enjoyed a first get-together at the park just last August. One step at a time, our dream of building a universally accessible park for the benefit of our entire community, regardless of special needs and abilities, moves forward. Our tenth official community celebration at the Santa Margarita Ranch was once again a sell-out evening, benefiting our programs and the children we serve. The Imagination Park Fall Classic, the annual Monarch Dunes golf tournament established for the benefit of the Park, celebrated its fifth anniversary, and likewise exceeded all expectations. Jack’s Helping Hand has three (3) sponsored cows in the Cow Parade this year, thanks to the generosity of Peter Orradre, David and Kelli Cole (Cole Motors) and the Rob Rossi families. The Robert Janssen Foundation provided us with a generous grant towards the Imagination Park, as well as an endowment for future park maintenance. Thanks to your consistent support and generosity, our Assistance Program is able to provide help and support for more than forty (40) children per month, averaging more than one new child every day. Jack’s Toy Box program and our lending libraries still serve to provide toys and therapeutic equipment, at no cost, to our very special families. The Little Swimmers, Water Warriors and Little Riders programs continue to ensure that our children have recreation and therapeutic opportunities that are often or otherwise unavailable. Bridget and I shared a dream when Jack’s Helping Hand was first established. Jack’s Helping Hand has accomplished more than we ever thought possible, and we know that it is each of you, as a part of our community, that has made Jack’s Helping Hand a reality. We offer you our sincerest thanks for making all of this possible. Together we will continue to make wonderful things happen for many very special children right here in our own community.

Remembering With Love

Wyatt and Kayce Akridge

in memory of our JHH children — 2016 Annika

Wyatt and Kayce are a loving brother and sister pair assisted by Jack’s Helping Hand. Eight-year-old Wyatt has autism. In April, Jack’s Helping Hand bought Wyatt a weighted blanket decorated with pictures of “Stitch,” his favorite Disney character. The blanket helps to calm Wyatt and keep him asleep throughout the night. The first night he slept with it, he did not get out of bed once, which was a first! Ten-year-old Kayce has been battling cancer and Jack’s Helping Hand assists with gas, food and lodging to make her out-oftown chemotherapy treatments possible. Jack’s Helping Hand is grateful to be able to support such a strong and deserving family.

Kailey 16 years old

Joey Scangarello Joey is a friendly six-year-old boy who loves going to school and being around other kids, his family and his puppy. He was born with Pierre Robin Sequence, Cleft Palate, Horseshoe Kidney and Bilateral Esotropia, and has since been diagnosed with Epilepsy. Although Joey is non-verbal and deals with the challenges of many medical complexities, he is a joy to be around. He has a way of lighting up a room and a gift of sensing when others need help. Jack’s Helping Hand has been happy to assist Joey’s family financially, from hotel and travel expenses to speech therapy. Joey is also a part of our Little Swimmers Program, and his family is extremely excited for the Jack Ready Imagination Park to open!

Aquatic Therapy is a rapidly growing clinical approach to physical rehabilitation that sets the stage to help our children recover from chronic pain. Water Warriors is our one-on-one Aquatic Therapy program geared for children and young adults. Led by kinesiotherapist Kay Heaton, this warm water program helps children going through chemotherapy, radiation or who have chronic pain.

Swimming has been shown in study after study to be of great benefit to children with a broad range of physical and developmental disabilities. Our Little Swimmers program is designed for children with special needs ages 2 to 12. Originally, this program was developed as a summer program, but has evolved into a popular year-round program. The classes are designed for both parent and child as they encourage physical and social development.

Toy Lending Libraries All children should have access to the gift of play. Through playing with toys, children learn a variety of new skills that build a base for them to reach their full potential. Our toy lending libraries offer traditional as well as adaptive toys for children and their families, at no cost, to enjoy at home. Adaptive toys are operated with switches or attachments that assist in teaching specific skills for children with special needs.

Jack’s Toy Box Jack’s Toy Box is a program we run in collaboration with the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education. This program allows us to bring the benefit of our adaptive toy lending libraries to our children’s homes by enabling physical and occupational therapists to deliver toys and therapeutic equipment to the homes of various special needs and early intervention families throughout San Luis Obispo County. The program also provides for the periodic pickup and replacement of toys and equipment, as our children’s needs evolve and develop.

Equine Therapy programs can help improve balance, strength and coordination, resulting in increased mobility, independence and overall function in a child with disabilities. Little Riders is an adaptive horseback riding program that is specifically designed for children with physical and cognitive disabilities. The program focuses on the benefits of working with horses and horseback riding. Classes take place at Wagner Ranch in Arroyo Grande and are led by Lisa Ankenbrandt, a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) registered therapeutic riding instructor.

Jack’s Assistance Program: Lending a Hand Jack’s Assistance Program was able to help meet the needs of 2,208 family members in our community this year. We also fulfilled requests for assistance with equipment, medical treatment, housing and transportation. In the last 10 years we’ve provided more than $1,700,000 in assistance to the children in SLO County.

Over the last 12 months we’ve provided: •

A specialty bike for a child unable to ride a typical bike

Several adaptive strollers for children with disabilities

International treatment for a child to regain partial eyesight after a brain tumor

$47,000 for our families’ medical treatment, counseling and equipment expenses

$136,000 toward the gas, food and lodging costs of our children and their families

“Jack’s Helping Hand has given our family more than just medical assistance. They gave our family hope in a time of desperation, they embraced us as family, and gave us strength to continue on. They showed us there is life after diagnosis! Jack’s supports all families, opening their arms to all children insuring that our little heroes have a bright future!” — Joslynn Skelton, mom to 17-month-old Charlie

CAMP REACH FOR THE STARS Camp Reach for the Stars is an event we adopted and one that continues to be near and dear to our heart. It’s a weekend where we watch children play, laugh, get pampered, and, if for only one very special weekend, forget they are cancer patients. For the third year, Jack’s Helping Hand has proudly sponsored this weekend-long family camp so that it can be provided at no cost to families of San Luis Obispo County children who are currently battling cancer or in remission. At Camp Reach for the Stars, our children meet other children and families who have experienced the cancer fight—children who have lost their hair from chemotherapy or sometimes suffered a relapse after months or even years following treatment. They understand one another. It’s a camp where the campers can discuss, relate and share common experiences that might seem foreign in most social contexts. It’s also a place where parents can share stories and resources with other parents and form supportive bonds with one another. At Camp Reach for the Stars, the entire family can take a much-needed deep breath, and enjoy themselves in a supportive environment like no other.

“A bunch of my friends today are the people I met at camp. They make me feel like I’m around people that understand me more than other kids do.” — Morgan, camp attendee, age 9

We are excited to continue this meaningful weekend in 2017. The next Camp Reach for the Stars is scheduled for the first weekend in June and will be held at Camp Yeager in Cambria. For volunteer or sponsorship opportunities, please call 547–1914.

CANCER SUPPORT PROGRAMS ONS Holiday Party Jack’s Helping Hand is proud to help co-sponsor the annual holiday party held by the Central Shores Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society for the benefit of local children who are battling cancer or in remission. These children and their siblings are able to enjoy a wonderful evening which includes arts, crafts, a special dinner and even a visit from Santa Claus, who arrives on a big red fire truck!

Cancer Mommies of the Central Coast Jack’s Helping Hand sponsors this support group, providing the necessary resources for regular meetings and social events. The group was established by a local mother of a child cancer patient and provides the opportunity for mothers of children with cancer to connect, and thereby establish a support system. This group holds bimonthly meetings in which members hear from and encourage one another. Members can share their needs, ask questions or engage in discussions at meetings and through social media connections. Helping a child, both physically and mentally, as they experience cancer treatment is always a very difficult journey for parents, and Cancer Mommies ensures that no mother goes through it alone.

“Having worked at several pediatric cancer centers over the last 15 years, I have never seen a foundation work as hard as JHH in helping families navigate through the tremendously difficult cancer experience. They not only help with the financial burden, but they are also there for these families emotionally, staying by their side during their most vulnerable times.” — Mary Mott Okimoto, CPNP Oncology Nurse Practitioner

JACK READY IMAGINATION PARK One out of every 10 children in our county has special needs—they are physically disabled or medically fragile due to illness, injury or birth defect. When we include, rather than exclude, children with all manners and degrees of physical challenges, we not only foster friendship, acceptance and understanding, but we also witness the strength, resilience, courage and joy of these amazing children, a gift that benefits the whole community. That’s why we developed the vision to build a universally accessible park for
people of all abilities that will enhance the emotional, physical
and social development of children with special needs, as well as teach
compassion and acceptance.

This is the Jack Ready Imagination Park, and it’s been a dream of ours since 2006, when we acquired the rights to build a park on a 30-acre parcel of land in Nipomo. We are more excited than ever about the progress at the Park, the first universally accessible park for physically challenged children and adults in San Luis Obispo County. The park will be a place that will allow children with disabilities to play with their peers while also providing a fun and relaxing experience for the entire family. The park will include an accessible playground, a therapeutic riding facility, sports courts, playing fields, accessible hiking trails and picnic areas.

5TH ANNUAL

IMAGINATION PARK FALL CLASSIC at Monarch Dunes What better way to support an incredible cause than a day of golfing at one of the most beautiful courses on the Central Coast? The Imagination Park Fall Classic (IPFC) is an annual golf tournament that raises funds for the Jack Ready Imagination Park by bringing together Jack’s Helping Hand sponsors, families and community members to golf, eat, drink and play. It’s not just a golf tournament, as it includes other entertaining games on the course, together with food and beverages provided by the many local supporters of Jack’s Helping Hand. On September 9th of this year, 38 foursomes enjoyed a day of fun and incredible golf at the Monarch Dunes Golf Course. The 2016 IPFC tournament was a huge success in no small part, due to the hard work of Board Member Russ Lovell, his organizing committee and the generosity of our sponsors: host sponsors Norcast, SESLOC and Glen Burdette; event sponsor Cole Chrysler Dodge Jeep; corporate sponsors Lindamood-Bell and MindBody; and Club 10 sponsor Ash Management—Mason Bar and Grill. The event raised more than $100,000 for the Jack Ready Imagination Park, which will ensure progress as we head into the playground and equestrian facility phases of park construction. We owe and offer a huge thank you to all of our sponsors, players and the many volunteers involved!

Annual BBQ Celebration: A BENEFIT FOR JACK’S HELPING HAND Once again, Jack’s Helping Hand was the beneficiary of the kind-heartedness of participating businesses and guests as the JHH Tenth Annual Benefit lived up to the extraordinary standard of generosity for which it has become known. Emceed by John Summer and Jack’s Helping Hand’s first child, Owen Beck, the BBQ celebration was a memorable evening for everyone involved. Guests mingled and bid on an array of items in the silent and live auction while listening to music provided by JD Project and Mariachi Mexicanisimo. Local vineyards and breweries donated wine and beer, and Cahoots Catering in Paso Robles provided a delicious dinner, which was enjoyed by all. We were all entertained by auctioneer extraordinaire Jim Settle and his crew. The live auction included a getaway package to Canada, a tin trailer stay-cation, a Las Vegas getaway including a supercar driving experience, concert packages for Bonnie Raitt, Adele and Blake Shelton, a retreat at Dolphin Bay Resort in Shell Beach, a Chicago Cubs home game rooftop experience, a week-long trip to the Italian countryside, gourmet dinner for eight in Cayucos, an owner’s share of a local racing horse, and a catered dinner for thirty with Paul and Bridget Ready. The silent auction was filled with local activities, golf, jewelry, overflowing gift baskets, artwork, wine, home décor items, and a helicopter flight experience. Once again, Kevin and Kathi Main created and donated a beautiful solid gold pendant designed with the Jack’s Helping Hand name and logo. Thanks to the overwhelming and generous spirit of our community, the event raised more than $400,000. These funds will allow the Jack’s Helping Hand assistance program to fulfill the new and ongoing requests for assistance with equipment, specialty items, medical costs, lodging and transportation needs.

Thank You to Our Volunteers Jack’s Helping Hand is only able to assist our families and maximize the efficiency of your donations because of the support of our many incredible and dedicated volunteers. We would like to extend our appreciation to the many volunteers who provided assistance to us in 2016. Your support truly makes a lifesaving difference for the San Luis Obispo County community. Our volunteers fill a variety of roles throughout the year, enabling events such as our annual BBQ, Camp Reach for the Stars, and the Imagination Park Fall Classic to run smoothly, as well as allowing us to provide the wide variety of programs for JHH children and families. For information on available volunteer opportunities, visit jackshelpinghand.org/volunteer.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: ROGER FELDTMOSE Roger has been volunteering for Jack’s Helping Hand since 2010, assisting with events, errands and office tasks to keep JHH administration running smoothly. “I’ve never worked with an organization that’s this caring or this committed,” says Roger. “I feel that JHH helps children every day and I am very proud that it is a local nonprofit where the money donated is used right here in our community.”

Giving Opportunities Jack’s Kids Klub Jack’s Kids Klub is made up of students who have found creative ways to raise money and support the JHH mission. Thank you to this year’s Kids Klub members for your donations to help children in need!

Birthday Club The Birthday Club is a wonderful opportunity for children in our community to learn how rewarding giving can be. The Birthday child requests donations from party attendees in lieu of gifts and then is able to choose where the funds are allocated.

Corporate Match Program Many large companies, such as PG&E, Bank of America, Pfizer and Amgen, offer matching programs that can double your donation dollars to Jack’s Helping Hand. For more information, please contact Jack’s Helping Hand.

Leave a Legacy By leaving a gift to support Jack’s Helping Hand, you are ensuring that we will continue to serve the medically fragile children in our community. You can name JHH as a beneficiary in your will, a qualified IRA, or life insurance plan.

Other Ways to Give Biddle Ranch Winery A portion of all sales of Biddle Ranch’s 2015 “Compassionately Crafted” Pinot Grigio is donated to JHH. Visit their new tasting room this fall to make your purchase and taste this amazing wine.

Kids Cents Program Jack’s Helping Hand is a recipient of the Rite-Aid Corporate Foundation’s KidCents fundraiser. This allows the public to make contributions by shopping at Rite Aid and rounding their purchase to the nearest dollar to donate their spare change.

Donor Spotlight: Dante Tognazzi

Dante Tognazzi was a man characterized by kindness and generosity who loved his friends, his extended family and his community. As a teacher at St. Mary of Assumption School in Santa Maria for 16 years, he was involved in a variety of business and volunteer endeavors, including longterm volunteer service to Marian Regional Medical Center. When the Ready family learned of their son Jack’s brain cancer, Dante became a strong source of support for Bridget’s mother, who was his dear friend. “He developed a strong closeness with the Ready’s,” said Dante’s cousin, David Donati. “He felt very moved by the illness of their son.” This closeness led to further involvement with Jack’s Helping Hand, attending events put on by the organization and eventually, a financial commitment in the form of a $186,000 legacy gift.

“He had a soft spot in his heart for children,” David recounted. “He would read to them, show an interest in their lives, and do activities with them. He thought Jack’s Helping Hand was the greatest organization.” Jack’s Helping Hand is extremely grateful to Dante for planning this generous legacy gift and we acknowledge and appreciate that it will make a tremendous difference in lives of the children and the families we assist.
