2017

Founded on April 17, 2006, Jack’s Helping Hand has now assisted our special children and their families for more than eleven years, thanks to the generosity of the community we serve. You and all of our wonderful supporters have allowed Jack’s Helping Hand to keep up with the ever-growing needs and demands of our medically fragile and special needs clients. The Jack Ready Imagination Park continues to move forward. We have now received permits, which will allow us to “power-up” the park and complete our water system. Additional funding was granted by San Luis Obispo County, and we are now closer than ever to building our universally accessible playground! One step at a time, our dream of building a park for the benefit of our entire community, regardless of special needs and abilities, continues to move forward. Our eleventh community celebration at the Santa Margarita Ranch was once again a sell-out evening. The generous members of our community in attendance again provided more support for Jack’s Helping Hand programs and the children we serve than we ever imagined possible. The Imagination Park Fall Classic celebrated its sixth anniversary. The golfers and Club 10 attendees all seemed to agree it was a smashing success. The tournament exceeded all expectations, generating more than $110,000 toward future park construction and projects! This year we send another special thank you to the Robert Janssen Foundation, which again provided us with a generous grant towards the park and our endowment.

2017 BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Leslie Orradre Chairman Paul Ready Vice Chairman Beverly Maguire President

Jack’s Helping Hand continues to provide programs for our community’s special needs and medically fragile children. Our Assistance Program provides support for more than 40 children per month, averaging more than one child every day. We know that it is only through the support of generous people throughout our community that Jack’s Helping Hand can continue to meet the needs of these special children and their families. If you’re reading this newsletter, we know that you are one of the special people that makes each and every one of these good works possible, and we will continue to do everything possible to maintain your faith and trust.

Steve Hollister Vice President

Jack’s Helping Hand has accomplished more than we ever imagined. Together, through your support, assistance and good wishes we will continue to make wonderful things happen for some very special children right here in our own community. We can’t thank you enough for making all of this possible.

CALIN SCORBY Calin is a fun-loving boy who enjoys interacting with people, laughing and playing with his dog Hudson! But before birth, at 36 weeks in utero, Calin was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. This disorder can cause tumors in various organs, primarily in the brain, eyes, heart and kidneys. It is a tough diagnosis that requires a lot of help and Jack’s Helping Hand was right there, ready to financially assist the Scorby family with travel to Stanford to see the specialist he required. After hearing the story of Calin and Jack’s Helping Hand, A.M. Sun Solar, Calin’s dads employer, wanted to become a sponsor of Jack’s Helping Hand. They are currently donating an extra $600 for each person that mentions Jack’s Helping Hand when signing up for solar. Jack’s Helping Hand is grateful to support such a wonderful family.

JARED SPRINGER Jared was an avid surfer who really missed his passion after a brain tumor rendered him wheelchair bound and unable to use the right side of his body. “Before his brain cancer, hemorrhage and stroke he spent four or five days a week in the water catching waves,” says Frank Springer, Jared’s dad. Karen, our Executive Director, identified an opportunity to help Jared when she was asked to speak to a group of Cal Poly students taking a Rehabilitation Engineering Course. Karen asked if they would consider adapting a surfboard for Jared to be able to use. Jack’s Helping Hand offered to fund the project and the group enthusiastically agreed. On Saturday, June 17, 2017 the group took Jared out to the ocean to test the new surfboard. They helped him onto the board and he rode his first wave. The surfboard worked. “Support like we receive from Jack’s Helping Hand has encouraged us and put smiles on our faces, especially Jared’s,” said Frank. “We can’t say thank you enough.”

Aquatic Therapy is a clinical approach to physical rehabilitation that sets the stage to help our children and young adults recover from chronic pain. Water Warriors is our Aquatic Therapy program geared for older children and young adults ages 5–21. Led by kinesio-therapist Kay Heaton and Brandee Tronstad, this warm water program helps children going through chemotherapy or radiation, or who have chronic pain.

Swimming has been shown in study after study to be of great benefit to children with a broad range of physical and developmental disabilities. Our Little Swimmers program is designed for children with special needs ages 2 to 12. Originally, this program was developed as a summer program, but has evolved into a popular year-round program. The classes are designed for both parent and child and encourage physical and social development.

Toy Lending Libraries Through playing with toys, children learn a variety of new skills that build a base for them to reach their full potential. Our libraries offer traditional as well as adaptive toys for children and their families, at no cost, to enjoy at home. Adaptive toys assist in teaching specific skills for children with special needs. This year, JHH has been able to move our libraries into the SLO County Medical Therapy Units enabling us to provide these toys to the children who utilize and need them most.

Jack’s Toy Box Jack’s Toy Box is a program we run in collaboration with the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education. This program allows us to bring the benefit of our adaptive toy lending libraries to our clients’ homes by enabling physical and occupational therapists to deliver toys and therapeutic equipment to the homes of various special needs and early intervention clientele throughout San Luis Obispo County. The program also provides for the periodic pickup and replacement of toys and equipment, as our clients’ needs evolve and our children grow developmentally.

Equine therapy programs can help improve balance, strength and coordination, resulting in increased mobility, independence and overall function in a child with disabilities. Little Riders is an adaptive horseback-riding program that is specifically designed for children with physical and cognitive disabilities. The program focuses on the benefits of working with horses and horseback riding. Classes take place at Wagner Ranch in Arroyo Grande and are led by Lisa Ankenbrandt, a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) registered therapeutic riding instructor.

CAMP REACH FOR THE STARS Camp Reach for the Stars is an event we adopted and that continues to be near and dear to our hearts. It’s a weekend where we watch children play, laugh, get pampered, and, if for only a moment, forget they are cancer patients. For the fourth year, Jack’s Helping Hand proudly sponsored this weekend-long family camp so that it was provided at no cost to families of San Luis Obispo County children with cancer or in remission. At Camp Reach for the Stars, children can meet other children who have experienced the cancer fight, lost their hair from chemotherapy or suffered a relapse after months or even years following treatment. They understand one another. It’s a camp where the campers can discuss, relate and share common experiences that might seem foreign in most other social contexts. It’s also a place where parents can share stories and resources with other parents and form supportive bonds with one another. At Camp Reach for the Stars, the entire family can take a much-needed deep breath.

“A bunch of my friends today are the people I met at camp. They make me feel like I’m around people that understand me more than other kids do.” – Morgan, camp attendee, age 11

We are excited to continue this meaningful weekend in 2018. The next Camp Reach for the Stars is scheduled for the first weekend in June and will be held at Camp Yeager in Cambria. For volunteer or sponsorship opportunities, please call 547-1914.

CANCER SUPPORT PROGRAMS Oncology Nursing Society Holiday Party Jack’s Helping Hand is proud to help provide the venue for an annual holiday party held by the Oncology Nursing Society, Central Shores for local children who are battling cancer or in remission. These children and their siblings are invited to a fun evening including arts, crafts, dinner and even a visit from Santa Claus on a big red fire truck! The gifts, provided by the Optimist Club of Arroyo Grande, are provided to each child that attends, along with their siblings so that the entire family is given some Christmas Cheer!

Cancer Mommies of the Central Coast Jack’s Helping Hand sponsors this support group, providing any necessary resources for meetings and celebrations. The group was established by a local mother of a cancer patient, Erika Cota, and provides a space for mothers of children with cancer to connect with and support one another. This group holds meetings that offer the opportunity to hear from and encourage one another, and a private Facebook group in which members can share their needs, ask questions or engage in discussion. Helping a child physically and mentally as they go through treatment can be a very difficult journey for parents, and no mother should go through it alone.

“I cannot speak highly enough of Jack’s Helping Hand. They have provided so much emotional and financial support. They helped us with hotels, gas cards, food and much more. We could not have gotten this far without them.” – Erika Cota

JACK READY IMAGINATION PARK One out of every 10 children in our county has special needs – they are physically disabled or medically fragile due to illness, injury or birth defect. When we include, rather than exclude, children with all manners and degrees of physical challenges, we not only foster friendship, acceptance, and understanding, but we also witness the strength, resilience, courage and joy of these amazing children, a gift that benefits the whole community. That’s why we developed the vision to build a universally accessible park for
people of all abilities that will enhance the emotional, physical
and social development of children with special needs, as well as teach
compassion and acceptance. This is the Jack Ready Imagination Park, and it’s been a dream of ours since 2005, when a 30-acre parcel of land in Nipomo was provided to serve as a community park in memory of baby Jack Ready.

We are more excited than ever about the progress at the Jack Ready Imagination Park, the first universally accessible park for physically challenged children in San Luis Obispo County. The park will be a place that will allow children with disabilities to play with their peers while also providing a fun and relaxing experience for the entire family. The park will include an accessible playground, a therapeutic riding facility, sports courts, playing fields, accessible hiking trails and picnic areas.

6TH ANNUAL

IMAGINATION PARK FALL CLASSIC at Monarch Dunes This year, 37 foursomes enjoyed a day of beautiful weather and incredible golf at the Monarch Dunes Golf Course on September 8. The 2017 IPFC tournament was a huge success due to the hard work of Russ Lovell, his organizing committee and the generosity of our sponsors: host sponsors Digital West, SESLOC and Glen Burdette; event sponsor Cole Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram; corporate sponsor Lindamood-Bell; and Club 10 sponsor Rabobank. The event raised more than $110,000 for the Jack Ready Imagination Park, which will enable more progress as we head into the playground and equestrian phases of park construction. A huge thank you to all of our sponsors, players and the many volunteers involved!

ANNUAL BBQ CELEBRATION: A BENEFIT FOR JACK’S HELPING HAND Once again, Jack’s Helping Hand was the beneficiary of the kind-heartedness of participating businesses and guests as the JHH Eleventh Annual Benefit lived up to the extraordinary standard of generosity for which it has become known. Emceed by John Summer and Jack’s Helping Hand’s first client, Owen Beck, the BBQ celebration was a memorable evening for everyone involved. Guests mingled and bid on an array of items in the silent and live auction while listening to music provided by JD Project. Local vineyards and breweries donated wine and beer, and Cahoots Catering in Paso Robles provided a delicious menu. We were all entertained by auctioneer extraordinaire Jim Settle and his crew. The live auction included a getaway package to New Orleans, a VIP experience to the “Ellen Show”, an Ireland adventure, a Tuscan farmhouse holiday, Country music extravaganza with Garth Brooks and Zac Brown Band, a trip to Idaho, a weekend package to Las Vegas to see Celine Dion, a three-night stay in Nashville, and a catered dinner for 30 people with Paul and Bridget Ready. The silent auction was filled with local activities, golf, jewelry, overflowing gift baskets, artwork, wine, home décor items and many beautiful gift baskets. Once again, Kevin and Kathi Main created sterling silver one-of-akind pieces and donated a beautiful solid gold pendant designed with the Jack’s Helping Hand name and logo. Thanks to the overwhelming and generous spirit of our community, the event raised more than $450,000. These funds will be used for the ongoing needs of our assistance program as well as our numerous other programs that continue to help the medically fragile children in our community.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: MARY MOTT OKIMOTO, MSN, NP Mary has been an advocate for Jack’s Helping Hand from the moment she realized we had a need in our community for children with cancer. In October 2011, Mary partnered with a group of local oncologists to offer the first pediatric medical service allowing children to get much of their treatment here locally. Mary also serves as the Camp Director for Camp Reach For The Stars. This camp lost funding a few years ago and Mary stepped in with a team of volunteers to keep it going. Jack’s Helping Hand thanks you for all your support, Mary!

THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS Jack’s Helping Hand is only able to assist our families and maximize the efficiency of your donations because of the support of our many incredible and dedicated volunteers. We would like to extend our appreciation to the many volunteers who provided assistance to us in 2017. Our volunteers fill a variety of roles throughout the year, enabling events such as our BBQ, Camp Reach for the Stars, and the IPFC to run smoothly, as well as allowing us to provide the wide variety of programs for JHH children and families. For information on available volunteer opportunities, visit jackshelpinghand.org/volunteer.
