Our Story le a S ll u B ty er p ro P n O d n 2 Welcome to our Leading edge genetics in a powerful, soft package is how we would describe our 2022 draft of bulls and we are excited to bring them to the marketplace this February. The 2022 sale bulls have been blessed with what has been described by the older generation of Boyup Brook locals as “one of three in a lifetime seasons”.

The start of 2021 was the worst we have seen on our property since we bought it in 2008. We had 18 dams dry up and majority of the cattle in large mobs to be able to access what was left of water. The sale bulls bounced back after an amazing growing season and now present in what we believe as the best they have looked.

This year the bulls were raised in large contemporary groups on big open paddocks of pasture.

We feel this keeps the sale bulls athletic and demonstrates that our bulls are raised in line with real world operations. Through this we have also been able to locate the bulls which stand out from their peers and outperform all on the same playing field, which helps our clients find and have access to bulls that bend the curve on growth and performance.

This year’s sale team offer the best genetics we have been able to find throughout the world and we couldn’t be happier with how it has all come together. The crop of bulls are by sires that are owned in partnership or exclusive to Venturon and other sires that we feel meet all of our clients’ demands, whether it be stud or commercial based.

The bulls that are catalogued are put through stringent criteria to make the sale team and represent the very best of their respective calf crops. We are pleased to be able to bring to our clients a bigger offering of both Angus and Charolais bulls to ensure our clients find a bull that will help improve the quality and profitability of their cattle enterprises.

This past year has resulted in us adding some very exciting new genetics with the purchase of the high selling bull out of the Roseleigh Angus Bull Sale in South Australia, Roseleigh Quarterback Q19. An outcross sire who has joined our autumn and spring calving Angus herds.

We also added the $28,000 Ascot Ramrod R104E from the Ascot stud in Qld as a new low birthweight, outcross calving ease sire who is a true curvebender on his data. Additionally we secured the Western Australian semen rights in the $123,000 Canadian Charolais sire, SVY Trust 6H in partnership with the team at Myona Charolais, NSW and also secured the Western Australian rights in the $52,500 Moongool Pilgrim from our friends at Ascot Cattle and Bauhinia Park of Queensland. We have added some very exciting embryos to the program out of Canada, the USA, and Australia in both Angus and Charolais, and we are excited for these calves to be born and to share these elite genetics with our clients.

As you will see a large portion of the sale bulls are ET bred. We continue to use embryo transfer to bring our clients the best genetics we can produce and more of them.

We are able to do this through the great man behind it all, Richard Hall, of Golden Arm Genetics.

We are thankful for the friendship and quality work that Richard has bought to our program, and as you can see through the depth of our ET bred cattle, it is helping us achieve our goal of offering industry leading genetics.

Richard’s extensive knowledge and experience of the Angus breed has been greatly appreciated and we thank him for all the work he does for our growing program.

In 2021 we saw amazing cattle prices and we have thoroughly enjoyed seeing our clients achieve great results through both saleyards and direct. It has been evident to us that clients who have invested in quality genetics have been rewarded and this year presents a market to capitalise on high cattle prices. Our aim at Venturon is very simple, design a product that improves the bottom line for our clients.

We have had a very successful year in the show ring with our cattle and would like to thank our team who have made this all happen.

In March we won the inaugural supreme livestock exhibit of the Wagin Woolorama with our cow/ calf unit Venturon Let’s Elope L20 and her calf Let’s Elope R66. The same pair were also awarded the supreme beef cattle exhibit at Warren Districts Agricultural show.

We made the trip to Beverley Ag Show this year and took out both female championship’s and won grand champion all breeds female with Venturon Clementine Q11.

Perth Royal Show was one of the best showings we have had winning supreme Exhibits in both the Charolais and Angus breed, grand champion Angus, Charolais and Murray Grey female, junior and grand champion Charolais bull, reserve junior champion Angus bull who sells as Lot 12. We were also honoured to win the prestigious interbreed breeders group of three with our Charolais team. Our lot 19 bull, Venturon Raise The Bar R1 had an exceptional spring show circuit after being pulled from cows winning interbreed champion bull of the Show at both Brunswick and Busselton Agricultural Shows. We look forward to campaigning our 2021 calf crop this year around the country, with some of the most exciting cattle we have bred.

Sale Information Venue The sale will be held on property, Venturon, Sambell Road, Boyup Brook and online with Auctionsplus.

The Sale The Selling System we will be utilising will be a video sale. The sale shed is located right next to the bull pens. Bulls will be penned with the ability to view and walk through them. The Auctioneer will sell the bulls by auction with a video of each bull projected onto the screens located in the sale shed, rather than running the bulls through a ring. This system we feel is buyer and animal friendly and works well with modern occupational health and safety requirements.

Sale Day Information The sale will be conducted under ALPA terms and conditions as displayed in the sale office on sale day.

Potential Buyers are to ensure they have registered with the selling agent and received a bid card prior to the commencement of the auction. This sale will also be interfaced with Auctionsplus so if you wish to utilise this platform, please make your self familiar with the terms and conditions or talk to one of the selling agents if you require assistance. Please ensure if you wish to use this platform you understand the system, appropriate connectivity and pre register 24 hours prior to the commencement of the auction. Registration Status / Transfers If the animal is listed as registered, it is available for society transfer at the vendor’s expense. If you require society transfers, please indicate on the buyers instruction sheet.

Animal Identification All bulls are branded and/or tattooed as per breed society regulations. All lots are permanently identified in accordance with the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS). Sale lots will have a sale tag on sale day.

Refreshments Refreshments will be available on sale day.

Catalogue Photographs All Sale photographs were taken on farm mid January 2022 by Harris Thompson.

Health Venturon Livestock is a JBAS 8 accredited herd, with a recent confirmed negative test undertaken in May 2021. All the bulls in the sale are eligible for entry to all states and territories in Australia. The Bulls in the sale are sold under the Zoetis Star Breeder program and have been vaccinated with 7 in 1, Pestigard and Vibrovax and have been drenched with Dectomax. All sale bulls have been tested negative for pestivirus. All bulls have been semen tested and scrotal’s have been measured by Nutrien Breeding Services, Bunbury, WA.

Sale Bull Notes Please note the sale bulls have been run in three different management groups. All bulls will be listed on the supplementary sheet what group they come out of. The bulls have been worked by dogs, vehicles and motorbikes their entire life so when introducing them to new management practises please acclimatise them to it gently. The bulls have not been worked by horses.

Health and Safety of Visitors All of the bulls within the sale have undertaken a strict temperament selection process. The bulls are quiet to handle under conditions they are used to in their groups. Sale day poses a range of new things to the bulls that they may not be accustomed with so please take all respect when viewing the bulls. Please be alert for the potential of bulls fighting within the pens. We do not by any means expect the bulls to be aggressive, but the new environment and large number of people can upset even the quietest of bulls. Please do not crowd the bulls or loiter inside the pens, and please use common sense within the pens when viewing them.

Please do not hesitate to talk to any of our team or the sale staff if you require assistance in the bull pens, we will be more than happy to help. Visitors enter the sale pens at their own risk. No children to enter sale pens, no dogs allowed on sale day.

Delivery Venturon offers free personal delivery within 500km of Venturon. All other transport within WA will be coordinated by Venturon to major centres. We will ensure the bulls are delivered as soon as we can after the sale, there will be no delivery on sale day.

Eastern States: Venturon will coordinate and cover half of the transports costs on route to Falls Livestock Depot, Finley NSW through Falls Livestock Transport. Please get in touch with us for any more information on our transport offers.

Upon taking delivery of your new bull, we recommend you have a companion animal or a group of animals for him to go into. It is a big thing for the bulls going in to a new environment out of their groups, so we recommend you help make this transition as stress free as possible for them.

The Venturon Guarantee All the bulls sold at Venturon come with “The Venturon Guarantee”. They come with a two year Guarantee in the rare event a bull is found to be infertile or unable to breed cows, provided the problem is not caused by injury or disease after taking delivery from Venturon.

Upon request, a veterinarian Certificate must be provided by an accredited Veterinarian. Venturon will replace with another sire or refund the purchase price of the bull less the salvage value of the bull.

Guide to Angus Suffix System

BREEDPLAN EBV Explanations EBVs An animal’s breeding value is its genetic merit, half of which will be passed on to its progeny. While we will never know the exact breeding value, for performance traits it is possible to make good estimates. These estimates are called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs).

Accuracy Accuracy (%) is based on the amount of performance information available on the animal and its close relatives - particularly the number of progeny analysed. Accuracy is also based on the heritability of the trait and the genetic correlations with other recorded traits. Hence accuracy indicates the “confidence level” of the EBV. The higher the accuracy value the lower the likelihood of change in the animal’s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives.

TRAITS

Calving Ease EBVs (%) are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.

CE % Dir = Direct Calving Ease - The EBV for direct calving ease indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in purebred females calving at two years of age.

CE % Daughters = Daughters’ Calving Ease - The EBV for daughters’ calving ease indicates how easily that sire’s daughters will calve at two years of age.

Gestation Length EBV (days) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on Artificial Insemination & hand mating records. Lower (negative) Gestation Length EBVs indicate shorter gestation length & therefore easier calving & increased growth after birth.

Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.

200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth to early ages.

400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for yearling weight.

600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.

Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. Steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight may also use the Mature Cow Weight EBV.

Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal’s milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter’s milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200-day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her milking ability.

Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is calculated from the circumference of the scrotum taken between 300 and 700 days of age and adjusted to 400 days of age. This EBV is an estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for scrotal size. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny and therefore selection for increased scrotal size will result in reduced age at calving of female progeny.

Eye Muscle Area EBV (sq cm) is calculated from measurements from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcase data, adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. This EBV estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300 kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. Sires with relatively higher Eye Muscle Area EBVs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same carcase weight than will sires with lower Eye Muscle Area EBVs. Rib Fat and Rump Fat EBVs (mm) are calculated from measurements of subcutaneous fat depth at the 12/13 rib site and the P8 rump site (from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcases) and are adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. These EBVs are indicators of the genetic differences in fat distribution on a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with low, or negative, fat EBVs are expected to produce leaner progeny at any particular carcase weight than will sires with higher EBVs. Retail Beef Yield EBV (%) indicates genetic differences between animals for retail yield percentage in a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with larger EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases.

Intramuscular Fat EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intramuscular fat (marbling) at the 12/13th rib site in a 300 kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.

Selection Indices

Selection indices are calculated for market specifications. Index values are reported as EBVs, in units of relative earning capacity ($’s) for a given market. They reflect both the short-term profit generated by a sire through the sale of his progeny, and the longer-term profit generated by his daughters in a self-replacing cow herd. A selection index combines the EBVs with economic information (costs and returns) for specific market and production systems to rank animals based on relative profit values. Note that different types of animals can give similar profit values, so consideration should be given to both the index and the component EBVs when selecting animals for a particular production system. More information is available on selecting animals using a selection index. The Index values are derived using BreedObject technology. More information is available from the BreedObject web site.

IMPORTANT: EBV’s are breed specific and cannot be compared across breeds. Only compare Charolais to Charolais, Angus to Angus, Murray Grey to Murray Grey.

Charolais BREEDPLAN Selection Indices

Domestic Terminal Index ($) (DTI) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for a typical commercial Charolais selection indices are calculated for two market specifications, herd where Charolais bulls are joined with a British breed cow base (e.g. namely, Domestic Terminal and Northern Maternal.

Angus TACE Selection Indices

Heavy Grain Index - $GN - estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial self replacing herd targeting pasture grown steers with a 200 day feedlot finishing period for the grain fed high quality, highly marbled markets. Steers are assumed to be slaughtered at 760 kg live weight (420 kg carcase weight with 30 mm P8 fat depth) at 24 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding and therefore maternal traits are of importance. There is a significant premium for steers that exhibit superior marbling.

Heavy Grass Index - $GS - estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial self replacing herd targeting pasture finished steers. Steers are assumed to be slaughtered at 620 kg live weight (340 kg carcase weight with 12 mm P8 fat depth) at 22 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding and therefore maternal traits are of importance. Emphasis has been placed on eating quality and tenderness to favour animals that are suited to MSA requirements.

Angus selection indices are calculated for four market specifications, namely, Domestic, Export and Northern Terminal.

Angus Breeding Index ($) - $A - estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a typical commercial self replacing herd using Angus bulls. This selection index is not specific to a particular production system or market end-point, but identifies animals that will improve overall profitability in the majority of commercial grass and grain finishing beef production systems.

Domestic Index - $D estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial self replacing herd targeting the domestic supermarket trade. Steers are assumed to be finished using either grass, grass supplemented by grain or grain (eg. 50 – 70 days) with steers slaughtered at 490 kg live weight (270 kg carcase weight with 12 mm P8 fat depth) at 16 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding and therefore maternal traits are of importance.

Emphasis has been placed on eating quality and tenderness to favour animals that are suited to MSA requirements.

Murray Grey BREEDPLAN Selection Indices

Supermarket Index - Sup- Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example Murray Grey commercial herd targeting production of steers for the domestic supermarket trade. Steers are either finished on grass, or grain fed for 70 days, and marketed at 470 kg live weight (average 260kg HSCW and 12mm fat) at 15 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding.

There are three different selection indexes calculated for Australian Murray Grey animals. These are: Vealer Terminal Index, Supermarket Index, Heavy Grass Fed Steer Index Vealer Terminal Index - VTI - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example crossbred commercial herd (i.e. using Murray Grey bulls over British bred females) targeting vealer production. Vealers are finished on grass and marketed at 365 kg live weight (average 200 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 10 months of age. Daughters are NOT retained for breeding and so no consideration is given to maternal traits (i.e. calving ease daughters, female fertility, mature cow weight).

Heavy Grass Fed Steer Index - Grass - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example Murray Grey commercial herd targeting pasture finished steers for heavier grass fed markets. Steers are assumed marketed at 620 kg live weight (340 kg HSCW and 14 mm P8 fat depth) at 24 months of age.

Daughters are retained for breeding.

Comments: Milestone was the high selling bull in the 2016 Wright Charolais Sale in America, at

$125,000 USD for one-half interest. We added Milestone to our AI sire line up for his overall sire appeal, depth of pedigree and dam. We strongly believe that a bull must be backed by a superior female line and Milestone has just that. We were extremely impressed with his progeny in the States and Canada, and he has bred extremely well for us. Unfortunately, he has only bred sons for us, but reports on his daughters are that they are functional females with beautiful udders. A homozygous polled sire with an outcross pedigree that adds so much appeal to his progeny and makes them so flash in their design.

Harris drove 3 hours with John Wright from By Livestock in Canada in 2018 to see him, and was impressed with the standout group of sons in the sale pen which went on to be the top averaging group in Palmers Bull Sale. His daughters showed everything we select for in our females; square made, great udders and good footed. Duty Free himself is a low birthweight bull who is a curve bender on his birth to weaning weight figures. We look forward to his following calf crops. He is a bull we added to our program for his excellent carcase traits and his strong maternal backing. Sired by Mac 2244 we knew he was going to breed on well. His sons have added shape whilst maintaining softness in a polished package.

Beast Mode B074 Comments: Beast Mode is a sire whose progeny have taken Australia by storm. He has sired

high sellers across the country in a range of different environments. Beast Mode’s impressive dam, Baldridge Isabel Y69, is one of our favourite cows in the Angus breed and really sparked our interest in using the bull. Last year two sons sold as our second and third top-priced Angus sires.

Command C036 Comments: Command is our go-to heifer AI mating sire. His progeny aren’t those of a typical heifer

mating sire, having added growth and muscle shape. We have found Command to add a good foot to his progeny and a docile temperament. We have another drop of Command calves which are looking promising.

Easy Decision 98 Comments: We used Easy Decision in a flush with our Diamond Tree Weigh Up M5 donor which

resulted in 18 A grade embryos. We decided to use him following great reports about calves coming through in Canada, and we love what he has done for us. Maximus M34 Comments: We purchased M34 as our foundation Angus herd sire at the 2018 Granite Ridge Sale,

SA. We wanted a sire that was going to give us a strong base to start with and produce an even made line of cattle. After viewing at their on property field day we were happy with his docile temperament, muscle shape and great foot structure. This is the second crop of sons we have offered by him. We are loving their added muscle dimension and power whilst being made in such a refined package. His daughters are developing intogreat cows with nice udders.

Next Best Thing Comments: Next Best Thing by far one of the best Murray Grey animal we have raised in our 21 years of breeding, if not one of the best animals we have bred. Unfortunately, we lost NBT to a freak accident late 2019, so this is the last chance to obtain a naturally sired son from Venturon. NBT was supreme Murray Grey exhibit at Perth Royal Show, supreme bull in show at Wagin Woolorama and the Upper Blackwood Agricultural Show, interbreed beef bull at Brunswick Ag Show and senior champion Murray Grey bull at Adelaide Royal Show all in 2018. Spring Born Comments: We are kicking the yearling sale bulls off with a bang. Described by John Young as one of his favourite Angus bulls he has raised. Regency R14 has been a standout since he was a calf when we purchased his dam with him at foot as a 7-month-old calf. He has one of the highest 200-day weights recorded in our program, and he has some serious horsepower backing him. He was sashed the grand champion Angus bull at Brunswick Ag show 2021 and the grand champion beef bull at the Upper Blackwood Show as well as reserve junior champion Angus bull at Perth Royal Show. Comments: We round out the sale with a moderate framed heifer bull option that is correct in his design. Roderick is a two-year-old’s first calf and was born at 26kg. He stands on a good set of feet and legs, expresses natural muscle shape and is one of the quietest Murray Grey bulls in the pen. This bull is going to breed a functional type of calf, with daughters that will make great cows, based on the female line that backs R2. He stems back to one of our original cows, Mighty Dana.
