Welcome to our 2023 bull sale, our 3rd annual sale at home, Dinninup Farms. We just want to take a second to thank each and every one of you that have supported us with our previous sales. This year also marks our biggest bull sale yet with 65 of our best bulls going under the hammer, 30 Charolais, 25 Angus and 15 Grey bulls. We strongly believe that this draft is an unbelievable set of bulls from the first lot through to the last, especially our Charolais offering.

We have had a truly amazing year across the country in 2022, winning championships at Sydney, Adelaide and Perth Royal Shows. At Perth we also won the Interbreed Breeders Group of Three and Group of Three Heifers. Venturon Start The Party (P) won Interbreed Junior Champion Bull and he sells as the lead Charolais bull as Lot 26.

Our program is expanding internationally with Venturon genetics calving out in Canada and exports to both Canada and New Zealand. We welcome new donors and sires from Canada as well as leading Australian bloodlines in 2023 that will add to our vision to “breed the best cattle we possibly can”.

The bulls have been developed on forage/grass based crops throughout the year in big paddocks in contemporary groups of 40+. Developing our bulls for a long life is paramount to us and benefits our buyers with longevity in their purchases. The bulls have then been raised on a light, high fibre ration to give them the ability to express their genetic capability and present their best on sale day.

For the first time, a large portion of the bulls will be spring born yearling bulls. Our program is dynamic and offering these younger bulls gives our clients access to new genetics earlier and also provides the following advantages: Being younger they are easier to handle; Buyers can gain a potential extra year of service and that extra few months of growth sets them up to be successful in the mating season. These bulls are run on their dams through to March where they are weaned onto a high forage diet and turned out to grass and grow with the season. Please take into consideration some of them are 5-7 months younger when viewing them.

Our season last year wasn’t as kind to our cattle as previous years with a tight growing period and lack of rainfall. A soft finish with late rains and growth still sees the bulls presenting well, showing how our genetics can perform under pressure.

Our ET program is stronger than ever with our donor pens being stacked with some of the best cows around. This gives you the opportunity to take advantage of our quest to breed the best possible cattle we can. Our ET program generates multiple full and half-brothers for consistency in multi sire joining programs. Our aim with Embryo Transfer is to stack our breeding herds with the best quality maternal females. We aim to offer sires to you with the best maternal pedigrees like you will see throughout the catalogue. We couldn’t do any of this without our great friend, Richard Hall and we thank him for his dedication to our program.

We are a family run program, the three of us do everything with our cattle as well as our right hand man, James Bentley who has been there to help sort, implant and AI, clip, picture and film every animal this year. We also want to take a chance to thank our sale staff. The teams at Elders and Nutrien, especially Deane Allen, Pearce Watling and Jamie Abbs, are there whenever we need them.

Venue

The sale will be held on property, Venturon, Sambell Road, Boyup Brook and online with Auctionsplus.

The Sale

The Selling System we will be utilising will be a video sale. The sale shed is located right next to the bull pens. Bulls will be penned with the ability to view and walk through them. The Auctioneer will sell the bulls by auction with a video of each bull projected onto the screens located in the sale shed, rather than running the bulls through a ring. This system we feel is buyer and animal friendly and works well with modern occupational health and safety requirements.

Sale Day Information

The sale will be conducted under ALPA terms and conditions as displayed in the sale office on sale day. Potential Buyers are to ensure they have registered with the selling agent and received a bid card prior to the commencement of the auction. This sale will also be interfaced with Auctionsplus so if you wish to utilise this platform, please make your self familiar with the terms and conditions or talk to one of the selling agents if you require assistance. Please ensure if you wish to use this platform you understand the system, appropriate connectivity and pre register 24 hours prior to the commencement of the auction. This will allow parties unable to attend the sale to bid remotely on lots they may be interested in.

Inspection & Sale Time

The bulls will be yarded and available for inspection from 11am on Sale Day Friday February 24th. Selling to commence at 1pm sharp. Supplementary sheets will be available on sale day or at prior request. GST

All lots are sold exclusive of GST. GST will be added to the auction sale price of each lot prior to invoicing.

Outside Agent Rebate

Venturon offer a 3% outside agent buyers rebate to those who nominate their client in writing to the selling agent 24 hours prior to sale and settling within 7 days. Agents must attend the sale with or on behalf of their client on sale day to assist with their purchase.

Insurance

At the fall of the hammer, Venturon recommend insuring all purchases. There will be an insurance representative onsite sale day to assist you with this.

Registration Status / Transfers

If the animal is listed as registered, it is available for society transfer at the vendor’s expense. If you require society transfers, please indicate on the buyers instruction sheet.

Animal Identification

All bulls are branded and/or tattooed as per breed society regulations. All lots are permanently identified in accordance with the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS). Sale lots will have a sale tag on sale day.

Refreshments will be available on sale day.

Health

Venturon Livestock is a JBAS 8 accredited herd, with a recent confirmed negative test undertaken in May 2021. All the bulls in the sale are eligible for entry to all states and territories in Australia. The Bulls in the sale are sold under the Zoetis Star Breeder program and have been vaccinated with 7 in 1, Pestigard and Vibrovax and have been drenched with Dectomax. All sale bulls have been tested negative for pestivirus. All bulls have been semen tested and scrotal’s have been measured by Nutrien Breeding Services, Bunbury, WA.

Sale Bull Notes

Please note the sale bulls have been run in three different management groups. All bulls will be listed on the supplementary sheet what group they come out of. The bulls have been worked by dogs, vehicles and motorbikes their entire life so when introducing them to new management practises please acclimatise them to it gently. The bulls have not been worked by horses.

Health and Safety of Visitors

All of the bulls within the sale have undertaken a strict temperament selection process. The bulls are quiet to handle under conditions they are used to in their groups. Sale day poses a range of new things to the bulls that they may not be accustomed with so please take all respect when viewing the bulls. Please be alert for the potential of bulls fighting within the pens. We do not by any means expect the bulls to be aggressive, but the new environment and large number of people can upset even the quietest of bulls. Please do not crowd the bulls or loiter inside the pens, and please use common sense within the pens when viewing them. Please do not hesitate to talk to any of our team or the sale staff if you require assistance in the bull pens, we will be more than happy to help. Visitors enter the sale pens at their own risk. No children to enter sale pens, no dogs allowed on sale day.

Delivery

Venturon offers free personal delivery within 500km of Venturon. All other transport within WA will be coordinated by Venturon to major centres. We will ensure the bulls are delivered as soon as we can after the sale, there will be no delivery on sale day. Eastern States: Venturon will coordinate and cover half of the transports costs on route to Falls Livestock Depot, Finley NSW through Falls Livestock Transport. Please get in touch with us for any more information on our transport offers. Upon taking delivery of your new bull, we recommend you have a companion animal or a group of animals for him to go into. It is a big thing for the bulls going in to a new environment out of their groups, so we recommend you help make this transition as stress free as possible for them.

The Venturon Guarantee

All the bulls sold at Venturon come with “The Venturon Guarantee”. They come with a two year Guarantee in the rare event a bull is found to be infertile or unable to breed cows, provided the problem is not caused by injury or disease after taking delivery from Venturon. Upon request, a veterinarian Certificate must be provided by an accredited Veterinarian. Venturon will replace with another sire or refund the purchase price of the bull less the salvage value of the bull.

BREEDPLAN EBV Explanations

EBVs

An animal’s breeding value is its genetic merit, half of which will be passed on to its progeny. While we will never know the exact breeding value, for performance traits it is possible to make good estimates. These estimates are called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs).

Accuracy

Accuracy (%) is based on the amount of performance information available on the animal and its close relatives - particularly the number of progeny analysed. Accuracy is also based on the heritability of the trait and the genetic correlations with other recorded traits. Hence accuracy indicates the “confidence level” of the EBV. The higher the accuracy value the lower the likelihood of change in the animal’s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives.

TRAITS

Calving Ease EBVs (%) are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.

CE % Dir = Direct Calving Ease - The EBV for direct calving ease indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in purebred females calving at two years of age.

CE % Daughters = Daughters’ Calving Ease - The EBV for daughters’ calving ease indicates how easily that sire’s daughters will calve at two years of age.

Gestation Length EBV (days) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on Artificial Insemination & hand mating records. Lower (negative) Gestation Length EBVs indicate shorter gestation length & therefore easier calving & increased growth after birth.

Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.

200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth to early ages.

400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for yearling weight.

600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.

Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. Steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight may also use the Mature Cow Weight EBV.

Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal’s milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter’s milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200-day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her milking ability.

Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is calculated from the circumference of the scrotum taken between 300 and 700 days of age and adjusted to 400 days of age. This EBV is an estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for scrotal size. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny and therefore selection for increased scrotal size will result in reduced age at calving of female progeny.

Eye Muscle Area EBV (sq cm) is calculated from measurements from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcase data, adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. This EBV estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300 kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. Sires with relatively higher Eye Muscle Area EBVs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same carcase weight than will sires with lower Eye Muscle Area EBVs.

Rib Fat and Rump Fat EBVs (mm) are calculated from measurements of subcutaneous fat depth at the 12/13 rib site and the P8 rump site (from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcases) and are adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. These EBVs are indicators of the genetic differences in fat distribution on a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with low, or negative, fat EBVs are expected to produce leaner progeny at any particular carcase weight than will sires with higher EBVs.

Retail Beef Yield EBV (%) indicates genetic differences between animals for retail yield percentage in a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with larger EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases. Intramuscular Fat EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intramuscular fat (marbling) at the 12/13th rib site in a 300 kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.

Selection Indices

Selection indices are calculated for market specifications. Index values are reported as EBVs, in units of relative earning capacity ($’s) for a given market. They reflect both the short-term profit generated by a sire through the sale of his progeny, and the longer-term profit generated by his daughters in a self-replacing cow herd. A selection index combines the EBVs with economic information (costs and returns) for specific market and production systems to rank animals based on relative profit values. Note that different types of animals can give similar profit values, so consideration should be given to both the index and the component EBVs when selecting animals for a particular production system. IMPORTANT: EBV’s are breed specific and cannot be compared across breeds. Only compare Charolais to Charolais, Angus to Angus, Murray Grey to Murray Grey.

Charolais BREEDPLAN

Selection Indices

Charolais selection indices are calculated for two market specifications, namely, Domestic Terminal and Northern Maternal.

Northern Maternal Index ($) (NMI) – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for a typical commercial self-replacing herd where Charolais bulls are joined with Bos indicus cows in Northern Australia targeting the grass fed Jap Ox market. Selected heifers are retained for breeding and so maternal traits are of importance. Steers target 650 kg live weight (360 kg HSCW and 12 mm P8 fat depth) and heifers 630 kg (340 kg HSCW and 14 mm P8 fat depth), at 26 months of age. In response to industry feedback; positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

Domestic Terminal Index ($) (DTI) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for a typical commercial herd where Charolais bulls are joined with a British breed cow base (e.g. Angus) targeting the domestic trade. This index assumes all progeny will be marketed with steers finished in the feedlot for 90 days, and weighing 450 kg (250 kg HSCW and 7 mm P8 fat depth) when marketed at 12 months. Heifers will be in the feedlot for 75 days, and weigh 430 kg (230 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 12 months. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

Angus TACE

Selection Indices

Angus selection indices are calculated for four market specifications, namely, Domestic, Export and Northern Terminal.

Angus Breeding Index ($) - $A - estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a typical commercial self replacing herd using Angus bulls. This selection index is not specific to a particular production system or market end-point, but identifies animals that will improve overall profitability in the majority of commercial grass and grain finishing beef production systems.

Domestic Index - $D estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial self replacing herd targeting the domestic supermarket trade. Steers are assumed to be finished using either grass, grass supplemented by grain or grain (eg. 50 – 70 days) with steers slaughtered at 490 kg live weight (270 kg carcase weight with 12 mm P8 fat depth) at 16 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding and therefore maternal traits are of importance. Emphasis has been placed on eating quality and tenderness to favour animals that are suited to MSA requirements.

Heavy Grain Index - $GN - estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial self replacing herd targeting pasture grown steers with a 200 day feedlot finishing period for the grain fed high quality, highly marbled markets. Steers are assumed to be slaughtered at 760 kg live weight (420 kg carcase weight with 30 mm P8 fat depth) at 24 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding and therefore maternal traits are of importance. There is a significant premium for steers that exhibit superior marbling. Heavy Grass Index - $GS - estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial self replacing herd targeting pasture finished steers. Steers are assumed to be slaughtered at 620 kg live weight (340 kg carcase weight with 12 mm P8 fat depth) at 22 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding and therefore maternal traits are of importance. Emphasis has been placed on eating quality and tenderness to favour animals that are suited to MSA requirements.

Murray Grey BREEDPLAN

Selection Indices

There are three different selection indexes calculated for Australian Murray Grey animals. These are: Vealer Terminal Index, Supermarket Index, Heavy Grass Fed Steer Index

Vealer Terminal Index - VTI - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example crossbred commercial herd (i.e. using Murray Grey bulls over British bred females) targeting vealer production. Vealers are finished on grass and marketed at 365 kg live weight (average 200 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 10 months of age. Daughters are NOT retained for breeding and so no consideration is given to maternal traits (i.e. calving ease daughters, female fertility, mature cow weight).

Supermarket Index - Sup- Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example Murray Grey commercial herd targeting production of steers for the domestic supermarket trade. Steers are either finished on grass, or grain fed for 70 days, and marketed at 470 kg live weight (average 260kg HSCW and 12mm fat) at 15 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding.

Heavy Grass Fed Steer Index - Grass - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example Murray Grey commercial herd targeting pasture finished steers for heavier grass fed markets. Steers are assumed marketed at 620 kg live weight (340 kg HSCW and 14 mm P8 fat depth) at 24 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding.

Charolais Reference Sires

Fan Favourite 804F (P)(R/F)

Comments: Fan Favourite 804F is a bull Harris found on his 2018 Canada trip. We were searching for a red sire to kick start our Red program and Fan was one of the best we could find in Canada. Homozygous polled and a true foot improver. His Mum was one of the best red factor cows Harris saw on his travels, and has a progeny track record of some of the best around, including Crowd Favourite, Bulletproof and Gary. Fan has sired progeny with a faultless foot, extra growth and added carcase weight. They are such big athletic cattle and we feel his daughters are going to breed exceptionally.

Venturon

New Generation (AI))P)(R/F)

Comments: New Generation has turned into a carbon copy of his father. We retained New Design as our walking son of Sparrows Kingston 139Y and we are so glad we did just that. His progeny have added growth rate and muscle shape while maintaining a moderate frame and exceptional carcase quality. His daughters in production are looking promising with great feet and correct udders.

Turnbulls

Duty Free 858D (P)

Comments: We can not speak high enough about what Duty Free has done for our program on his first calf crop. Harris drove 3 hours with John Wright from By Livestock when he was in Canada in 2018 to see him. He was impressed with his standout group of sons in the sale pen which went on to be the top averaging group in Palmers Bull sale. His daughters showed everything we select for in our females, square made, great udders and good footed. Duty Free himself is a low birthweight bull who is a curvebender on his birth to weaning weight figures. We look forward to the following calf crops. Note this is one of your first opportunities to get access to sons in Australia at auction. Venturon had a year exclusivity to Duty Free from Agri-Gene Australia along with a group of elite Charolais breeders across Australia.

Nationwide 8455

Comments: A really impressive bull that we added to the program after the recommendation of a friend in Canada and we haven’t looked back. We always wanted to use Patriot but were unable to get him collected for Australia, but we feel Nationwide is a great version with more power. Like all of the sires we use, they must stem from great cows and LT Brenda 2184 is one of the best.

Comments: We were chasing a big powerful red factor Kudos son, and Q27 ticked all of the boxes when he sold as the lead off yearling bull at the 2020 Ascot bull sale. He has added scale and performance to some of our moderate cows and has added an exceptional foot, clean slick coat and a great tan colour. He is homo polled and a grandson of the great Palgrove Hallmark stemming back to a nice Ascot Juggernaut daughter.

Comments: Phenomenal was the result of embryos we purchased from DSK to breed ourselves a herd sire. We had seen progeny from this flush and what they had bred. Western Edge was a bull we didn’t use but we were excited to get a son after what he did for DSK. P42’s ET sister is one of our favourite P females and has a beautiful bred heifer in the keeper pen.

Maximus M34

Comments: We purchased M34 as our foundation Angus herd sire at the 2018 Granite Ridge Sale, SA. We wanted a sire that was going to give us a strong base to start with and produce an even made line of cattle. After viewing at their on property field day we were happy with his docile temperament, muscle shape and great foot structure. This is the first crop of sons we have offered by him and are loving their added muscle dimension and power whilst being made in such a refined package. We are loving his daughters in production, having weaned two groups of calves that are tremendous.

Command C036

Comments: Command is our go-to heifer AI mating sire. His progeny aren’t those of a typical heifer mating sire, having added growth and muscle shape. We have found Command to add a good foot to his progeny and a docile temperament.

Earnan L612

Comments: We purchased a semen package in this elite sire when our good friends at DSK Angus, NSW purchased him for $56000. His sons have far exceeded our expectations and really are just the type we like: big hipped with muscle and growth. We have found them to be born very easy and get up and grow. We have been impressed by his progeny at DSK and is a bull we will continue to use.

Murray Grey Reference Sires

Qualified Q2

Comments: We purchased Qualified as our pick bull of the 2020 Top of The Range Murray Grey sale as the top priced yearling bull. We had been looking for a Jeopardy son that came from a top end cow family, and they don’t come much better than the Antoinette cow family out of Glenliam Farm. Without a doubt he is the best Murray Grey herd sire we have purchased and we feel this group of sons are great.

King Of Hearts

Comments: We purchased Hearts from the Rouchelle Stud, NSW after he was awarded Supreme Murray Grey exhibit of the 2016 Murray Grey Junior Stock show. We had admired King of Hearts since seeing him on his Mum the previous year. Hearts progeny are born low birthweight, have great carcase quality and grow into impressive sires. His first son sold at Auction, topped the Murray Grey offering at the WALSA 2020 Supreme bull sale.

Rouchelle

Comments: We kick off the 2023 sale with one of the biggest sons of Granite Ridge Maximus we have raised. He’s a super long made, good footed with such a slick clean made coat and hair type. We feel with the strength of the bulls mother, being one of the most phenotypically impressive cows in the herd and the influence on the Maximus sire, he is going to breed some big roomy, milky replacement females.

Comments: Well here he is, your 2022 Perth Royal Show Grand champion Angus bull who stood second in the All Breeds Interbreed comp to our own Start The Party. A bull who has excited since he was born. We purchased his mother as our pick of the Murray Families Tullibardine Angus herd. When you start to analyse this bull, there’s more and more you start to like. He is built right from the ground up, he’s a long bull with great depth and width with a smooth calving ease front end. This guy is a front paddock bull who your neighbours will be looking over the fence at.

Comments: We all know weight gain and muscle makes you money. This guy is what you’ve been looking for to add some shape to those cows that need some grunt put back in them. Stand back and admire the natural shape and thickness in this bull, then take a second to appreciate his feet and skin type. South Dakota is such an impressive individual and one we thought long and hard about retaining. His dam, Stella F65 is one of our foundation Angus cows who we own in partnership with the DSK Angus stud NSW, and I can say she is one of the soundest black cows on the farm.

Comments: We just love this bull. His mum, Passion Pop P22 is one of our favourite home bred females. She is phenotypically so great in her design, and she has passed every one of her strong points onto this son. As our summers become longer, we feel hair and skin type is so important to have right in Black hided cattle and S10 is just spot on in that department. He’s well made. stout made with great butt shape and a really Sirey head.

Comments: ET brother to Lot 3. Another high growth, long bodied bigger frame bull. An exceptional foot and leg on him who gets out and glides. Comments: Steve is easily one of the quietest Angus bulls we have raised. Maternal brother to Raise The Bar R1 who was our 2022 WA record priced Charolais bull selling for $36,000 to Minnie-Vale Charolais. This is one of the best sons of Fan Favourite in the sale who is homo polled and takes ownership of the ground with his impeccable hoof and leg structure. Hillary P27 is quickly becoming a herd favourite and the greatest daughter of Kingston we have. His progeny looked really impressive on Harris’s last trip to Canada.
