INSPIRATION CALLS

S

usan Scott is a self-avowed “apartment dweller” — and it suits her just fine. The current executive director of the Ventura Music Festival has lived in many places throughout her illustrious career, and the advantages of renting versus owning — the simplicity and freedom that come with less space and no mortgage — have been as appealing to her in beachside Ventura as in the glamorous metropolises of New York and Chicago. Lack of ownership hasn’t prevented Scott from putting her very distinctive stamp on her rental. Art collected through the years, pieces refurbished with the help of talented friends, most available space (including the bathroom and the kitchen) devoted to display — Scott knows what she likes, and doesn’t hesitate to incorporate it into her life. Every inch reflects the personality of this art lover and culture maven. Our inner lives do tend to walk right through the door and find their way onto our walls, counters and tabletops. The deeply spiritual Jerry Jones was an avid outdoorsman who spent decades of his life studying and teaching meditation. When he built his enormous Ojai estate, he came up with elegantly curved walls, swooping beams and rooms that don’t conform to specific shapes, but flow from one to the next, mimicking the inherent roundness and flow present in nature. It is this quality, even more so than the detached meditation room or the

Tibetan prayer wheels, that speak to the “Zen essence” that informed Jones’ approach to life. The talented and gregarious Colene Riffo is a fan of music and art, and a musician herself, with a penchant for throwing parties. When she remodeled a 1920s Midtown bungalow, she opened it up, opened it out, and added a piano, outdoor spa and several patios. It’s now the perfect place to entertain friends and family, organize a house concert, jam with fellow musicians and display local art. Even the simple garden ornaments available through East-West TeaHouse become a canvas for personal expression, consciously or not. Where they are placed, how they are used, the way they are customized and change through time all say something about what their owners need and value. Company head Stephen Bauer has found that his tea houses contain a universe of meaning and possibility, embodying in their basic structure a philosophy as simple and elegant as a haiku. From a chic apartment to an impressively large property, stories in our fall home and garden issue show that style flourishes anywhere that personality and interior design meet. It’s not the size of the canvas that makes those internal landscapes manifest, but the force with which inspiration knocks on the door, demanding to be let in. – Nancy D. CULTURE VISUAL FEAST: From contemporary sculptures to creatively refurbished cabinets, the art-filled flat of Susan Scott is a cultural paradise waiting to be explored. An unparalleled view of the ocean is icing on the cake.

GALLERY WITH A VIEW An art-filled, oceanview abode proves that apartment living is anything but pedestrian. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOS BY MICHAEL MONTANO “I’VE BEEN AN APARTMENT-DWELLING KID FOREVER. It suits me and has been how I lived during my childhood, my early adulthood, my Chicago and New York lives,” notes Susan Scott, art collector, theater buff and executive director of the Ventura Music Festival, as we survey her oceanview, art-filled pad. “It’s how I learned to transform bathrooms and kitchens into gallery spaces!” There was one exception. When the arts maven moved from New York (after two decades there) to Los Angeles in 2001 to turn around a nonprofit in crisis, a first-time opportunity to try “house living” came up. “I rented a small cottage, but it turned out to be skunk and ant central! Not good. So an apartment dweller I am again,” she laughed, adding, “I thought it would take three years to accomplish what I needed to do — which it did — and then I’d go back to New York. But I discovered that I could rent an oceanview apartment in Ventura.”

The rest, as they say, is herstory. During a six-month “time out” in her current Ventura apartment, she pondered her next move — perhaps to San Francisco, Portland or Seattle — until “serendipity intervened.” Artist Scott Cook introduced Scott to another town newbie, Josh Addison, who was taking on management of his family’s property, the Bell Mattress Factory. He wasn’t sure what to transform the factory into, but told Scott that he was thinking about the arts — and that they should figure it out together. Voila! The nonprofit Bell Arts Factory was born, with Scott as the founding executive director. “The grand opening was fabulous!” the enthusiastic transplant recalled. “It looked like a New York City opening with a thousand or more people pouring through!” This opportunity provided a great introduction to artists, arts organizations, civic and philanthropic leaders and more. Scott, an }}

organizational development consultant, never expected to live in Ventura County, admitting that she “accidentally” spent the past 14 years here working with a large number of arts organizations. As ED of the Ventura Music Festival (after stints with Ojai’s Theater 150, the Ventura County Community Foundation’s ArtsLIVE project and other nonprofits) she and Artistic Director Nuvi Mehta focus on presenting internationally known musicians, including those from Ventura County, such as Roger Kellaway, Perla Batalla and John Jorgenson, who appeared at this year’s fete. Scott is also on the Ojai Music Festival’s Women’s Committee. “I’m still here, plying my nonprofit expertise mainly with arts organizations. Still in the same oceanview apartment. And I still think I’m moving on!” Moving on would mean packing up a ton of art. Scott’s contemporary art collection, which includes 168 works (including 32 in the bathroom and 29 in the kitchen!) is eclectic and includes a plethora of Ventura County artists mixed in with a few antiquities and other gems collected during her Chicago and New York years. The living room of the effusive collector (who enthusiastically shares stories about each piece) includes artist/activist Sylvia Raz’s take on Henry Moore’s “Reclining Mother and Child,” which doubles as a coffee table, and Michael Pedziwiatr’s plexi-cube tower “Parallax.” A floating kimono painting, “Flayed Angel,” by friend Elisse Pogofsky-Harris, hangs above the living room couch and is flanked by a lovely pen-and-ink drawing by noted sculptor Louise Nevelson. The kitchen counter is chock-a-block with small sculptures by Swedish sculptor Carl Eldh, a grand tour piece, a piece of Sabino Glass and more. “I don’t cook!” she exclaims as she explains each piece. On her desk (an Asian altar table she cut to height), there are an Etruscan pot, 3rd-4th century Egyptian head and miscellaneous Roman fragments. Vessels abound as well, including three Moorish ones she “hauled back from Santa Fe” and a contemporary ceramic by Cheryl Thomas. “Antiquities and modern art are fabulous together!” Scott exclaimed. Scott collaborated with local artist MB Hanrahan on two chest redos and one lampshade conversion. They painted over a Chinese red lacquer wedding cabinet in trompe l’oeil style to resemble a chalkboard filled with Alice in Wonderland quotes. The bathroom is a joy to ponder — there’s even a piece by Jose de Creeft, the sculptor who created the beloved Alice in Wonderland sculpture in New York’s Central Park and another by French abstract painter Solange Bertrand. In the office/guest room, Tom McMillin’s carved plexiglass radar image stands guard, while a bronze and glass wall sculpture by Ojai’s Doug Lochner hangs next to an early Scott Cook painting. Two dm Spaulding sculptures reside in the bookcase. In the master bedroom, you’ll find a Beverly Decker “word meditation piece,” a Giacometti lamp set and a whimsical orange dresser (a product of the Hanrahan/Scott collaboration). “Sometimes I wish I had specialized in something,” Scott lamented, “but my fairly large, eclectic collection demonstrates that contemporary art in diverse media calls to me most.” What the observer will notice in Scott’s extensive collection is

12

|

ventana

|

SEPTEMBER 2017

an abundance of female depictions — including her first-ever purchase: a beautiful, unsigned 1920s nude pencil drawing. William Schwartz’s “Three Graces” (1928) graces the hallway while a selfportrait by Macena Barton (1948), who once expressed an interest in painting Scott’s portrait, caught my eye as well. In addition to many representations of women, there are certainly a good percentage of women artists in her collection, including a piece by fiber artist Carol Shaw-Sutton. While Scott’s art collection is priceless, the confirmed apartment dweller notes that, “The view, of course, is million-dollar.” v

ARTS ADVOCATE: Ventura Music Festival, Bell Arts Factory, ArtsLIVE, Theater 150 . . . there’s no cultural stone left unturned by Scott, an avid collector whose commitment to the arts and expertise with nonprofits has taken her far and wide. While she has a true appreciation for contemporary work, her assemblage includes much older pieces, too. “Antiquities and modern art are fabulous together!” she says.

BY MARK STORER | PHOTOS BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN olene Riffo glides from room to room to outside patios with an abandon befitting a hotelier. Her Ventura home flows like the ocean breezes it catches, making inside and outside work together, bringing elements of each to the other in a corner space on a busy street that feels more like a small beach-town hideaway. Sitting just below Hobson Heights, the 1929 bungalow caught Riffo’s eye last year. “This house had a lot of quirkiness to it,” Riffo said. “But I can see why it functioned the way it did and I wanted to expand on that.” That function sparked a renovation that occupied Riffo (an animator and artist) and her partner of 22 years, Greg Powell

(owner of an HVAC company), for a year after they bought the house in July of 2016. The work opened up the space, changed the front entrance and brought a vision of comfort and versatility to the home. Riffo’s work as an animator in the 1970s and 1980s gave her a hands-on approach to her art. “I love working in digital format, it’s a really nice medium. But I was raised doing everything by hand,” she said. “Working by hand gives you the feel of it, swathing out giant backgrounds with paint. It’s a different animal.” The tangible, the tactile feeling of texture is present throughout the house. }}

It was the fireplace that drew Riffo’s and Powell’s attention when first they decided to renovate. “It was not the most attractive piece and it’s the focal point in a living room,” said Riffo. The couple worked with artisan Jerry Kenton assembling a collection of stone, including one called Yukon Gold. “I wanted a combination of warm and cool colors, and Jerry recommended this to us,” Riffo said. The finished product came to influence much of the rest of the renovation. The stone became a theme. Yukon Gold and a stone called Cherokee became the wall covering for the counters. The Mexican tiles remained in place along with the wood floor throughout the house, which the couple refurbished and gave a natural finish. In the dining nook (added by the previous owners) off the galley kitchen was placed a long, thick and solid dark stained-pine wood picnic bench for seating. In addition, a grotto that echoes the missionlike entry and room divisions is furnished with a bar stool and seating for two. An office space adjacent to the kitchen has been transformed into a beautiful and beautifully functional bathroom. The stone floor starts off with earthy, beachlike colors, gradually becoming pale and then darker blue to resemble the ocean. The fully open shower (set far enough from the toilet and sink to prevent splashes) has a high window and a view of the ocean. A hammered copper sink and teak furniture can withstand the moisture. “I like the stone’s colors, the gray that runs through darker in the Yukon Gold and lighter in the Cherokee and it just gives the whole that bright, warm feeling,” Riffo said. In the house’s original bathroom, a natural story unfolds, with hammered copper bordering more of the stone on the wall, creating an image of a cliff and of water flowing. An added skylight continues the feeling of openness, while a vibrant photograph of lush greens and mosses brings a sense of the outdoors in. “I’m inspired by nature,” Riffo said. “The whole of these elements, iron and plaster, metal and stone — I’m addicted to stone.” The bright and open feeling is also intended to create space for music and art. “We’re very much interested in supporting the local arts community,” said Riffo. The living room is enhanced by a grand piano and other musical instruments, which Riffo plays while jamming with other local musicians. “We have hosted and want to host more house concerts,” she said. The room opens up to a small porch next to what once was the front door. Now this entry is a sitting and gathering area with a full-glass window-door that allows views of the living room. The new front door of the house opens to a small foyer highlighted by more stone on the wall, sea shells and an octopus that Riffo designed and had fashioned from iron by Luis Jaime of Old World Elegance in Ventura. Jaime’s work is evident in several interior areas as well, in several refashioned wrought-iron fences in patio areas outside. Interestingly, these fences seemingly do the opposite of what fences typically do: Here, they redefine small boundaries, open up spaces and provide context to layers of concrete work that flow seamlessly from an entryway ramp to a driveway to front, side and backyard gardens that Riffo designed with the help of Paul Reininga of RKN Landscaping Concepts in Santa Clarita. These gardens are filled with bee-attracting flowers, drought-resistant plants and a number of vegetables, too. Back indoors, adjacent to the living room is what Riffo calls the “social room.” It contains two round and tall bar tables of marble with accompanying stools, allowing space to move while also accommodating six to eight people. Fine-art photography bedecks the walls all the way down the hall. “It’s a kind of gallery and I want to be able to use it to showcase local artists’ work. We’ve got room for about 12-15 pieces and the space to spend }} some time looking at them, which is really the goal.”

Two bedrooms offer views of the garden and a bit of the quaint Lincoln Drive neighborhood. “I like how you can sort of see life out there, just a glimpse of it,” said Riffo. The glimpse is filtered by greenery and branches. In the backyard, an above-ground spa, quiet and efficient, is surrounded by a curved bar and stools and lit subtly with LED lighting through glass bricks. Gently fenced on the Lincoln Drive side and flowing with grapevine and leafy branches on the other, a private oasis with room for entertaining becomes an extension of the kitchen. The detached garage is more a play area complete with PingPong table and several futon beds for overnight visitors. “Greg and I naturally complement each other with skill sets in the mechanical and the aesthetic,” said Riffo. “He’s addicted to creating energy efficiency. I’m addicted to creating beauty. And we’re both addicted to sustainability.” Powell fitted the house with an efficient air-conditioning system, which comes in handy on late summer and early fall days here, and it completes an oasis feeling. The house at once allows views of the ocean, of the close-knit neighborhood, provides open space for music, entertaining and guests, and provides room for various pieces of art on the walls, all while creating a feeling of close coziness, textured land and seascapes, stories wrought in stone, iron and natural elements giving residents and visitors alike the chance to tell their own stories. v

ENDLESSLY ENTERTAINING: Multiple dining spaces allow for guests to mingle at leisure. The ‘social room’ is great for a crowd, while a grotto off the kitchen lends itself to more intimate conversation. A bathroom bench sits atop stone cobbles (whose layout includes an embedded octopus) designed to mimic the ocean environment. Riffo and Powell (bottom) pose with the pups at the spa bar, complete with colorful lighting for evening adventures.

ROOM WITHOUT WALLS Stephen Bauer and the philosophy of the tea house.

S

BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER | PORTRAIT BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN tephen Bauer has spent more than a decade in the service of tea houses. As the owner of East-West TeaHouse in Ojai, he has immersed himself in the craftsmanship of this deceptively simple yet undeniably elegant garden structure, and become entranced by its symbolism and philosophy. He shared some of his views on tea house make and meaning with Ventana Monthly.

How did East-West TeaHouse begin? Our tea houses were originally designed by Tony Gwilliam, an English architect and designer (now in his 80s) who was a longtime colleague of Buckminster Fuller. Tony worked for many years in Bali, and these [tea house] structures are all over the place. When he came to Ojai in the 1990s, he wanted to make something that reminded him of Bali. He started Tony’s T House. Fuller’s notions of “doing more with less” — these principles and values informed Tony’s work and practices, and continue to inform our work at East-West TeaHouse. I started working with Tony in 2006, and eventually took over as Tony’s attentions shifted to new projects in Bali. You have a background in film and theater. How do tea houses fit into that scheme? I like to make things — no matter the field of inquiry: a deep-dish pizza, a tea house, a story, a tango. One of the aspects [I like about theater] is this notion that it’s incomplete. It invites us to lean forward. . . . As a writer in theater or film, you’re not dictating the performance. You’re creating an invitation for an actor to create a character, inviting the director to realize a vision, inviting designers to describe the scenes. And ultimately all of it is raw material for the audience to complete it. A tea house has that same quality; it invites us to make something of it. Tell us a little bit about the tea houses you offer. The tea house is a simple object made from lumber, hardware and fabric. It’s a standalone platform with a canopy cover — it’s not far off 24

from a picnic table with an umbrella. But it’s a unique sort of blended object, like a combination of a sculpture, a lawn ornament and a giant piece of lawn furniture. It’s meant to rest lightly on the earth, typically using flagstones or pavers. And it becomes a template or a canvas for other activity: where people place it, how they use it, how they begin to personalize it. So every one is unique. [They can also] change to the changing needs of the environment. An example is the kotatsu table, which is a panel that’s an integrated part of the deck. It lifts up and legs fold up from below to form a table surface. It has all the functionality of furniture, but we haven’t added a lot to it. Screen and fabric walls can roll up, to be open like a pavilion. You can turn it into a lanai. And all that happens in a matter of minutes! Its purpose is how we use it — how a tea house expresses itself emerges organically from how we engage the tea house. What are some of the ways your clients engage with their tea houses? It can be a showpiece or a focal point. But people frequently use it as a room without walls. It’s a place to move outside and into the garden. People will take meals there, or do yoga. Clients have used them as outdoor bedrooms and art studios. Our tea rooms, which can be designed with screens and walls, have been used as offices, playhouses and guest bedrooms. One client in Ojai has a small house with a large backyard — her tea house has tripled her usable space and become an anchor point for engaging her yard.

A tea house is an invitation to process, a path or approach, both metaphorically and literally. We often come to a tea house by making a kind of journey, stepping away from daily life and entering the garden. Tea houses are of course associated with the Japanese tea ceremony. Are there aspects of that tradition that come into play at East-West TeaHouse? Wabi-sabi is the Japanese aesthetic that helps inform our tea houses. . . . Wabi refers to the natural, asymmetric and spiritual. Its original meaning indicated quiet or sober refinement . . . the beauty of simple things. . . . Sabi is the rustic patina, the perspective or understanding, the wisdom that comes with age. . . . This is an acknowledgement of the underlying processes, the ongoing flow of time and life. . . . Many tea houses go

SHOP TALK BREATHING ROOM: With its simple design and numerous options for customization, a tea house “becomes a template or a canvas for other activity,” says Bauer, shown above lounging poolside in Meiners Oaks. through different phases, cycles, stages, generations. Brand-new, mature, older, weathered, updated, refreshed. Tea houses evolve as families, gardens and circumstances grow and change. Those are qualities to notice, embrace and celebrate. From this perspective, a tea house is more than just an object in your yard. I think that’s the way art works. We’re looking for something that will evolve a response. A tea house is a record of all these gestures: choice of wood, staining it, sanding it. The tea house is a record that responds to its environment. There’s an illusion of this being fixed. But part of the aesthetic of the tea house — and other art — is to understand that it’s a journey that we are on. The tea house has a human scale, in terms of its size, but it’s part of a much longer cycle. v

COVER STORY

AHEAD OF THE

CURVE

H

Rounded walls and nonlinear architecture bring a Zen-like balance to an Ojai retreat. BY KAREN LINDELL | PHOTOS BY TWO FISH DIGITAL

uman beings build things with sharp edges. But nature is all about curves. Jerry Jones, a deeply spiritual man who loved the outdoors, decided to make the world go round when he designed his home in Ojai. The first thing you notice about the secluded home, nestled off Creek Road on Kenewa Street, is that . . . you don’t notice it. The serene home, on sale since Jones died last year, appears to be part of the landscape, rather than atop it. With curved white walls and rounded roofs, the nonlinear main house and two smaller buildings blend into the landscape and look almost like a cluster of mushrooms. Or, as Jones’ daughter Shannon describes the structures, they appear “Hobitt-y.” The home, however, takes up far more space (and height) than the tiny space inhabited by Frodo and his Hobbit brethren. At 4,873 square feet on 45 acres, the estate is spacious, but the human-built parts don’t take up a massive footprint.

WALK THIS WAY: Flagstone paving and gently curved beams seen at the entryway are employed inside the house as well, creating a sense of continuity between outdoors and in.

ZEN OASIS: With its gentle architectural curves, serene landscaping and understated but elegant simplicity, the Jones estate exudes so hum spirituality. Even luxurious touches, such as an infinity pool, exhibit a certain modesty.

2017

The split-level main house boasts three bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. The detached guest quarters have two bedrooms and two bathrooms. There’s also a smaller building once used by Jones as a meditation room. The only massive aspect of the estate is the view of the Topa Topa Mountains and Ojai Valley in the distance, along with oak trees and other flora (and fauna) surrounding the home. The impressive estate was designed by Santa Barbara architect Bob Easton, with substantial input from Jones and his wife, Kristayani. A native of Portland, Oregon, Jerry Jones was a businessman, philanthropist and spiritual seeker who died of cancer in 2016 at age 81 while living in Ojai, after Kristayani died of breast cancer. “My father never had the same energy after my stepmom died,” Shannon Jones said. (Kristayani was Jerry Jones’ second wife.) “It broke his heart. They built the house together.” Shannon, who lives in Oregon, said her father wanted to study architecture in college, but felt responsible for helping with his family’s home and remodeling company, so he majored in business, with a minor in architecture. He sold the family business in the 1980s and formed the J.G. Jones Company, which managed and developed properties in Oregon, California, Texas and the Caribbean. Kristayani was from France, Shannon said, and “always found Portland a little bit damp and cold. They were on the hunt for a sunny place to build another home where they could live during the winter.” They considered a home in France, she said, but within one month, “three people told them to check out Ojai. They went to Ojai for the weekend and thought it had exactly the right feel.” The feeling that the couple sought wasn’t merely California warmth, however. Char Michaels of Keller Williams, the listing agent, said Ojai and the home the Joneses built “embodied the Zen essence they were trying for.” Jerry started meditating in the late 1970s, Shannon said, “as a way to combat stress. He had spiritual experiences because of the medi-

tation” and devoted decades to studying and teaching the practice. He traveled frequently to India, and was the co-author, with Anne Cushman, of From Here to Nirvana: The Yoga Guide to Spiritual India. In 1988 he founded the So-Hum Foundation, which funds numerous U.S. and international charities. “So hum” is an ancient Sanskrit phrase meaning “That am I,” a mantra that recognizes the oneness of all beings. Jones’ Kenewa estate, with its gentle architectural curves, serene landscaping and understated but elegant simplicity, exudes so hum spirituality. Michaels, who knew Jerry Jones well, said he “was soft, gentle, kind and generous.” That same spirit suffuses the house and landscaping. Tibetan prayer wheels are encased in a low stone wall along a path from the driveway to the front door. “The idea is, you get out of your car, then turn the wheels so you send good prayers out to the world as you go into the house,” Michaels said. Everything about the contemporary home is understated, from the mostly unadorned curved white walls to the fir, stone and granite trimmings. The feeling is warm, however, not austere. The clean, simple look also belies the complexity required to build an entire house out of curves. Even the windows, closet doors and outdoor railings are curved. Shannon said she thought the home’s curves “were representative of Kristayani, and my dad wanting a feminine feel to the house.” Defining the “shape” of some of the rooms is impossible. Neither circular, rectangular nor square, they simply flow, with few straight architectural lines. An incubator of natural light, the home also features numerous skylights and floor-toceiling custom glass pop-out ventilated doors and windows. The interior of each room blends seamlessly with the exterior. The ceilings, for example, are held up with arcing wooden beams that could be extensions of tree branches into the house. A circular stained-glass window features images of the sun and moon. Rippling }}

waves decorate tiles in the shower. Both inside and out, light-colored flagstone flooring has a natural glow. The main room, or “great room,” is a space with high ceilings connected to a large kitchen. “You feel a little like Jonah inside the whale, with the curving beams and rounded walls and ceiling,” Shannon said. “The room has an organic aspect, but it’s also contemporary.” Shannon said her father drew and pored over plans for the house, “looking at the angles of the sun, and where they landed.” The home’s new owner will have access to her father’s detailed drawings, she said. “I kept them because they show the artistry and joy my dad took during that process.” Outside, oak trees surround the property, and an enclosed courtyard adjacent to the main house and guest house is abloom with crepe myrtles, pomegran-

GREAT EXPECTATIONS: The combined living room, dining area and kitchen create a large space with high bowed ceilings, wave-shaped beams and curved walls all around. Standing in the great room has been described as being “like Jonah inside the whale.”

ate trees and perennials. An infinity pool blends into a stone wall and hills at the courtyard’s back edge, and a covered patio features an outdoor kitchen. Resident wildlife, Shannon said, include bobcats, squirrels, a huge owl and many other birds. Roofs on all the estate’s structures are unusual. The mushroomlike toppers are completely smooth, made from waterproof, rubberized, stained decking material. The unique look and nontraditional roofing materials, Shannon said, “were purely aesthetic; they didn’t have any special function.” Jerry and Kristayani both died peacefully at the home. Michaels said she thought the home would be ideal for a person “who is a visionary, inspired by nature, fueled for creative imaginings — and in need of inspiration or healing.” v
