WHY ART MATTERS

F

lorida. Texas. Puerto Rico. Mexico. The hurricanes and earthquakes that have ripped through these areas continue to send shockwaves across the nation and the world. The extraordinary effort that will be required to ameliorate the damage is almost unfathomable. It will be months and years before many of these places recover, and there’s a real fear that things will get worse before they get better: The specter of further crises caused by lack of infrastructure looms greater every day. Hurricane season remains in full swing, and even as I write this, Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas are facing yet again heavy rain and possible tropical storms. Staring down so much devastation, creative endeavors can seem almost frivolous. And I will be the first to say that top priorities should always be safety and well being: protection from harm, medical care for injuries, a place to live, food to eat. These are all things that make life possible. But there are also things that make life worthwhile. Art is one of them, and it’s not a luxury, but an essential component of human existence. Peter Tyas, the new executive director of Studio Channel Islands, understands this. He feels art — in all its myriad forms — occupies a vital place in the commu-

nity, and therefore should be nurtured and supported. By the same token, he feels art should serve its community to some degree as well. In the conversation he had with writer Mark Storer, Tyas shares how he hopes to “use the power of the arts for social good,” whether that’s furthering education, helping people find their voice, aiding in recovery from trauma, inspiring social change or promoting justice. Picking up a paintbrush, writing a story or composing a melody aren’t the same as erecting a house, providing clean water or building a new highway. But artistic endeavors nevertheless give us something we so desperately need right now, as the world reels from one natural disaster after another, from political discord and military conflict, in the face of threats to the environment, human rights, safety and prosperity. Appreciating art, and expressing ourselves through it, is tremendously therapeutic because it reaches deep inside of us to get at anger, sadness, fear, joy, hope, love —all the things that make us human. Creativity constructs a safe space for the soul, feeds the imagination, and paves a road toward healing. In these uncertain times, it seems to me that the arts are more necessary to us than ever. – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

CULTURE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION: The Santa Paula Theater Center paid tribute to its 100 years of theater, culture and history with a community “birthday party” in September.

STAGE MAGIC

The Santa Paula Theater Center celebrates 100 years of comedy, drama and culture.

“One

should never give away all one’s secrets.” Cathy Metelak, president of the Santa Paula Theater Center’s Board of Trustees, is giving a behind-the-scenes tour and she’s hesitant to reveal too much lest the theater lose some of its magic. Yet she graciously opens door after door, revealing rooms filled with the stuff of fantasy. Costumes evoking every era. Baubles and wigs that help actors transform themselves into anyone they wish. Technical equipment that conjures any light or sound. Most everything in the building serves multiple purposes. “Who uses anything for just one thing?” Metelak asks. Prop furniture doubles as seating in the Pub, where audiences mingle before a show and during intermission. The Pioneer Room serves as boardroom and storage space for more props. The kitchen is where costumes are laundered, meals are shared and a fake fridge stands next to a real one. (Careful where you put your yogurt.) There’s even

a caretaker’s apartment. There are no idle spaces. Every inch of the theater plays a role. The land where the theater stands was once home to the Star Film Stock Company, a silent-film studio run by French filmmaker Gaston Méliès, whose brother, Georges, directed some of the earliest science fiction films. In 1916, Alice Stowell McKevett, one of the founders of the Santa Paula Ebell Club (a women’s cultural club), bought the property. The McKevett Corporation hired the architecture firm of Hunt and Burns to build the Ebell Clubhouse, now a historic landmark and considered to be an outstanding example of the Shingle Craftsman style. In September 1917, the Ebell Clubhouse opened and hosted dances, cotillion classes, high teas and other cultural events. For the next 70 years or so, the Ebell Club rented the building from the McKevett Corporation for the bargain price of $1 per year. }}

By the 1980s, the Ebell Club had fallen out of fashion — and the clubhouse was poised for its second act. Dana Elcar and William Lucking, two veteran stage and film actors, had an idea. The men had been looking for a permanent home for their fledgling theater group, which they were running out of the basement of the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Paula. On Dec. 31, 1987, the Ebell Clubhouse became SPTC’s new home. It was kismet. The clubhouse’s original stage, where big bands had played, became SPTC’s stage. The balcony, where Ebell Club members mingled, was turned into the technical booth. Curtains were hung, some areas were gently repurposed, and before long, SPTC presented its first production: Major Barbara. The show was a hit. This year, the SPTC is shining a spotlight on the 100th anniversary of the Ebell Clubhouse. It held a centennial birthday party and rededication ceremony, and throughout the year it has been celebrating the building’s history in its literature and pre-show announcements. It has also loaned out artifacts that are on display at the California Oil Museum down the road. The past, present and future coexist beautifully at SPTC, in the bricks and mortar of the building as well as in SPTC’s artistic vision. “We try to balance interesting, challenging and modern [works] with classics,” explains Leslie Nichols, SPTC’s primary producer. A typical season will include dark fare such as The Birds by Conor McPherson, grown-up comedies akin to Amy Herzog’s 4000 Miles and crowd favorites like Calendar Girls. “There’s a lot of musical theater in Ventura County so there is room for Off-Broadway-type of plays in Santa Paula,” Nichols says. “Sometimes a play surprises our audience and gives them something to think about.” One such play was Becky’s New Car by Steven Dietz. Directed by Jessi Mae Stevenson and starring Cynthia Killion, the play is about a woman facing a crossroads. Nichols says, quoting one of her favorite lines from the play, “When a woman says she wants a new car, what she really wants is a new life. It makes us think: ‘Is this the life I really want?’ The play really resonates with people.” Another recent production was Kimberly Akimbo by David LindsayAbaire. The play is about a 16-year-old girl with a premature aging disease who falls in love with a teenage boy. Kimberly was played by Nancy Solomons, a mature actress. “That was challenging for some audience members,” says Nichols. And yet, she adds, “Audiences are becoming more sophisticated. They mirror society. In the beginning we produced mostly classics from the 1940s and 1950s like The Skin of Our Teeth. But as time has gone on, audiences have come along. They take risks with us. There are things to learn from people not like us. Theater is culture’s way of speaking.” For plays that might seem especially edgy or that are still works in progress, there is Backstage at SPTC, a black-box theater located behind the main stage. Plays like Harrogate House or Two Little Indians ’Cause the Other Eight Died by Kathleen Bosworth (which opens Oct. 6) allow writers, directors and actors to stretch the limits of their craft, while offering audiences a chance to see exciting new theater. Backstage at SPTC is also home to the annual Playzapalooza! one-acts and First Sundays. On alternating }}

MERRY MESS: There’s no end to the theatrical hijinks that are made possible with the props and equipment available backstage.

first Sundays of the month, Backstage hosts Full Disclosure, a Moth-like presentation of true stories following a theme, and Ventura Writers’ Block, staged reading of one-acts written by its members. As Nichols says, “There’s always something happening at Santa Paula Theater Center.” Concerts are held on the main stage and acting workshops are led by award-winning instructor Taylor Kasch (formerly of Flying H) on the Backstage. One of SPTC’s most popular happenings is Ghost Walk. Every year around Halloween, Ghost Walk takes place in a different Santa Paula location. This year’s locale is the old Ford Dealership and the theme, set in the 1950s, revolves around cars. Some of the “ghosts” include used-car salesman Earl

Cheetah. “Earl is down on his luck when he meets femme fatale Della Grey and things quickly fall apart,” explains Ghost Walk lead, Elixeo Flores. “Guests [can] also attend a ghostly senior prom with Tommy and Sally. Creepy crooner Mad Manfred and his Moon Beams are the featured performers.” Are there any ghosts in the historic Ebell Clubhouse? Andrea Robles, SPTC’s former caretaker, is often asked that question. “The building is too full of love and excitement for any ghost to call it home,” she says. Cathy Metelak adds, “There are no ghosts, but some of us have been terrorized by the occasional hat on a costume rack.” There might not be any actual ghosts at SPTC, but there is real magic. The secret is out. v

rik ReeL is a force of nature. He’s imposing at 6 feet, 5 inches. He is verbally and physically expressive. His long arms move through the air when he is whirlingdervishing around his Ventura painting studio. His thoughts — and there were many — l will attempt to unravel in a moment. Influenced by his artist mother Joan, who painted beach scenes, Erik (now 64) first experienced artistic validation from the public as a teenager. Joan exhibited her watercolors in shows around Puget Sound and the young Erik, who grew up in the gray, rainy climes of the Northwest, tagged along. “These exhibitions usually had three divisions, each with their own show: student, amateur and professional. When I was 15, I entered one in the student division. When we went to the show, my work wasn’t there, but I hadn’t received the usual rejection notice. So we asked, where was my work? They said, ‘Oh, the judges disqualified you from the student show, they insisted it had to be in the professional division.’ From then on, I was outlawed from all but the professional division in the regional shows,” he recalled, noting that his father, a gifted mechanic who worked for Boeing, was disappointed when the eldest of three sons decided to become an artist. The budding artist took the early acclaim to heart. }}

ARTISTIC MOVEMENT: His Ventura studio may be walking distance from the Southern California coast, but ReeL considers himself a part of the Northwest School, where Asian aesthetics and the cool, misty environment of Puget Sound combined to produce works known for their muted tones and subtle symbolism.

OCTOBER

2017

In high school, ReeL remembers his art teacher, Miss Wendell, and two important books: Jung’s Man and His Symbols and the original version of Sir Herbert Edward Read’s A Concise History of Modern Painting. “I still consider these two of the best books on art written in the 20th century. If only a good fraction of our art writing achieved even half the depth of these two works, things would be a lot different in the art world of today. International-class art critics who have not read Sir Herbert Read do so at their own peril,” the painter warned. Erik ReeL’s art is surprisingly accessible, but deep. It requires time, space and thoughtfulness to truly appreciate his language. He is a thinking person’s artist. He taught briefly — and it’s sort of a shame that he’s not teaching at the moment, as his brain contains a warehouse of information that should be shared with others. ReeL wants viewers to engage, experience and develop their own interpretations of his pieces. His works are not static, but change not only with the light, but also with the viewer’s mood. When a person is feeling happy, a work of art might seem happy. Viewing when depressed might reveal a darker aspect. ReeL’s work invites such encounters, although I have to say he errs on the side of joyous. ReeL’s liquid acrylic canvases invite introspection. He has created his own hieroglyphics and it takes a Margaret Mead approach to decipher the language. My impressions during a visit to his Front Street studio (where a number of other artists work under the radar) included these thoughts: musical, chop suey, love, flotsam and jetsam, joy. ReeLs’ website is titled “Visual Art and Philosophy.” If I’d noticed that before I visited his studio, I may have been less surprised by his rapid-fire espousal that included a lesson on Raphael’s tondo (round) painting, a survey of Northwest painting influences and the artist’s musical tastes, which range from East Indian ragas to improvisational jazz. Also significant, his lovely muse, Rhonda Hill, the publisher of EDGE, a voice for emerging fashion designers, who popped in and out for a quick hello and a goodbye kiss. Looking over my notes, his jazzy dialogue on the page looked like his paintings — a bit staccato, stream of consciousness and definitely open to interpretation. For example: neon tennis shoes, might take off, been drawing since 6 years old, oldest of three brothers, leftover shelf paper, specific triangle patterns, math major, animation, Boulder, Santa Fe, Seattle’s economy, Wagner’s The Ring, industrial insurance and local tax laws, Alex Ross, Bill Gates, fog smoke fires explosions, birds flocking, Morris Graves, Puget Sound, Sumi-e painting, Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, Albers color theory, screen saver, Beethoven, fluid acrylics, health care, uneven income, Pulse nightclub massacre, Korea, Ojai. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. }}

OCTOBER

Although ReeL lives in Ventura with Hill in an elegant Midtown condo with a view, he considers himself a Northwest Coast artist. He cites an Asian and softerimagery connection to Seattle-area artists, in contrast to SoCal leanings toward Latin/pop culture/Hollywood/ hard-edge imagery. The artist admits to being influenced by Northwest School painters such as Mark Tobey and Morris Graves. Other influences include Northwest mystic/Works Projects Administration (WPA) artist Guy Anderson (“a very good painter, virtually unknown outside Puget Sound area”); painter and muralist Kenneth Callahan, who wrote for the Seattle Times; George Tsutakawa, well-known for his fountains (ReeL studied sumi-e and sculpture with him at the University of Washington);

2017

and Paul Horiuchi, who created large Japanese paper collages. ReeL is settled now, far from rainy Seattle climes, in sunny Ventura County, which also informs his canvases. One could probably write a book about Erik ReeL’s life and art. Better yet, he could — and perhaps the artist and well-read thinker has one in the works. I’m sure he’s thought about it . . . and a whole lot more. “I get treated a lot like I’m from another planet,” ReeL said to me as we wound down our visit. Those who enjoy mental and visual space travel might want to take a trip to Planet ReeL. Better yet, book a ticket to his entire galaxy. v For more on Erik ReeL, visit erikreel.com.

ozens of artists took to the streets of Ventura Harbor Village Sept. 9-10, armed with their pastels, umbrellas, wide-brimmed hats and knee pads. Their mission: to transform the sidewalks into a walkable canvas as part of the Ventura Art and Street Painting Festival. Working from early Saturday morning until late Sunday afternoon, these creative spirits braved bright sun, soaring temperatures and chalk dust in a rainbow of colors to lay down trompe l’oeil scenes, pop culture icons, playful pictures, mermaids, sci-fi fantasies and more. Vivid hues and imaginative designs made for an artfully }} festive weekend.

COVER STORY

PREACHING THE GOSPEL OF ART Peter Tyas of Studio Channel Islands discusses art, community and the power of creativity.

BY MARK STORER | PHOTOS BY MICHAEL MOORE

p

TURNING A CORNER: Executive Director Peter Tyas aims to bring a new, community-based angle to the programming offered at Studio Channel Islands.

eter Tyas is remarkably calm for a man on an energetic mission. He is thoughtful, focused, serious and quite aware that his mission is to help people appreciate life through a different lens. The executive director of Studio Channel Islands Art Center for a year now, Tyas, 39, came to California from his home in England after falling in love with a Camarillo woman at St. Andrews University in Scotland, where they both served on the faculty of Museum and Gallery Studies. Tyas was intimately involved with the 2012 Olympic celebrations, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and other events that led him to examine how art improves people’s lives. As the studio prepares to celebrate its 20th birthday next year, Tyas is making sure that the word gets out and that artwork and creativity act as an invitation to the whole community. Mark Storer sat down to talk with him about the future and the past of Studio Channel Islands and how his unique experiences make him the leader it needs. Your career seems to be about preaching the gospel of art. Is that a fair equation? After university, I started work for the Yorkshire Museums Council and with how those various organizations measure their success. So I spent time looking at what the arts do for communities and how we

use the power of the arts for social good, beyond just personal aesthetic pleasure. Things like working in education settings, how the arts help people find their voice, how they help in the healing and growing process, recovery from trauma and how to use the arts for social purpose were my main concerns. What did that look like on a daily basis? I worked with libraries, hospitals and schools at the local level and it was really fascinating work. 2012 was a huge year in Great Britain with the Olympics, and we did projects where communities celebrated the Olympic torch coming through. We did a fire garden at Stonehenge, for example, where we set fire to a World Heritage site; it was quite interesting. There are laws about what you can’t do at a U.N. World Heritage site. We broke at least six of them. What did you find at Studio Channel Islands when you arrived? What did you see as the opportunity? Studio Channel Islands is quite focused on doing specific things. What I’m trying to bring to it is a plurality, to do multiple things at the same time. So we’re working, for example, with Rancho Campana High }}

School, with young people and their capacity to do the day-to-day things we do. They get real-world experience of working in the cultural sector with working artists. They get to work in a number of areas, not just painting, for example, but also film and photography and many other things. We’re also working with students from Cal State, Channel Islands, with their nonprofit course, and they’re helping us develop programs and they reach a whole different group of people. We cherish these kids and we try to make spaces for them in multiple studios so they can move around and learn in multiple experiences. They’re at the beginning of a long education path, and our mission is to encourage and connect with them. Studio Channel Islands has always had an open-door philosophy. Can you tell us about First Saturdays? The first Saturday of each month, we open for everyone to come in and see work in the gallery and then go to the studios and meet the artists. There’s a conversation to be had and learning to be picked up. We’re determined to increase the number of opportunities we offer for people to come in and experience this. People should know they can come here, spend the afternoon, have a picnic on the grounds and see, learn and hear the voice of the artists who work here. Engaging the community is important to you. Oh, yes. It was immediately about reaching out into the community here. We worked with Camarillo Hospice and St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital and did a number of things like bringing in different artists to do creative task classes for people in grief groups and patients. We had people from three different health-care districts come in, have lunch and then have a talk from an artist and work on projects that help create memory function, for example. We know that working with your hands, fingers and toes, talking to people and doing mental arithmetic stimulate parts of the brain that help memory. One of the biggest problems elderly people face is loneliness and we know that after the age of 60, loneliness is more dangerous to your health than smoking. So these activities help prevent that. }}

What other ways do you get the word out to the community about the opportunities, the art and artists here? Well, I’m talking with the Chamber of Commerce saying, “Look, we need to set up a network for the creative sector. That sector is all microbusinesses and they need to be able to facilitate a network that allows them to develop products while showcasing our local creative industries.” These people are all here, they live here, and we want to connect these artists and an audience for them. We can amplify the voice of that sector, and everyone from dance tutors to DJs to sculptors can connect to a creative network. There’s no reason that artists here should have to go to Los Angeles to show their work. The audience is right here. How will the Studio’s 20th anniversary look through this particular focus you have? From September this year to September next year, we’re going to talk to the community about how to celebrate our birthday — what we’ve been in the past, to what we should be in the future. We’ll do a huge party that goes from Friday to Sunday. We’re going to shape the party so that we have a Friday cocktail formal, a funky evening gig for Saturday with live music and beer, and Sunday will be a family picnic; and all of it will be a celebration of creativity in our lives — something for everyone on each day. It really is a wide-ranging discussion, isn’t it? It’s about the power of art and creativity? I’m hoping that it [Studio Channel Islands] will transform the way this community sees itself. As we grow and reach out, we’ll celebrate the creative endeavours of our neighbors and we’ll recognize that the arts aren’t a luxury, they’re a part of what makes life worth living and it transform lives. A community which values its creative sector is a smart community. v STUDIO CHANNEL ISLANDS 2222 E. Ventura Blvd., Camarillo 805.383.1368 studiochannelislands.org

HERE BE ART: Creative uses of outdoor spaces (sculptures at the entrance to the Blackboard Gallery, or the Red Chair Installation along the fence) beckon to the community to come in and explore the creative treasures waiting inside.
