GOING TO EXTREMES

T

he travel issue is always a mix of disparate stories, attesting to the wide, diverse world we live in. But this month is particularly all over the place. It starts with Ira Meyer, the professional photographer who took the breathtaking image of the aurora borealis on our cover. Meyer has a love for the far reaches of the globe. His career was forged on a trip to Alaska, and while he has traveled extensively, his true love affair is with the polar regions. Meyer has spent the last decade documenting the environment and wildlife of Antarctica and the Arctic region, moving from pole to pole to explore their simultaneous majesty and fragility. He discusses his journey and inspiration (and the shot that landed him on the cover of National Geographic) in a fascinating interview. Meyer’s frozen landscapes are worlds apart from the massive clay and salt pans of the Namib Desert in southern Africa — arid plains that stretch for miles, surrounded by some of the highest sand dunes in the world and captured so elegantly by Chuck Graham in Travel. At first glance, the North and South Poles and Deadvlei couldn’t be more different: water and earth, snow and sun, mountains of ice versus seas of sand. And yet both environments share an ability to awe with their stark, remote beauty, a wild and almost alien nature to their extreme realms. Contrast this against the bright and bustling shores of New England, where the human touch is manifested

in everything from churches and libraries to Gilded Age mansions to charming lighthouses and harbors — all of which are inextricably linked with American history. Grab a lobster roll and dig in to About Town with Leslie Westbrook, where you’ll enjoy people and places and fun little anecdotes that recall an era gone by. Time hasn’t stopped on Massachusetts or its nearby isles . . . but this is a place that remembers where it came from. And then there’s Hong Kong, which always seems one step ahead of everywhere else. This metropolis on the east side of the Pearl River Delta hasn’t forgotten its history, certainly, but its temples and traditions and important personages are definitely along for the ultramodern city’s ride straight into the future. The vision is an optimistic one, where past, present and whatever comes next all coexist in mutual harmony. The Pearl of the Orient values its art, food and culture as much as its skyscrapers and trading centers, to which its many museums, murals, parks and festivals attest. Kathy Leong explores Hong Kong’s artsy sensibility in Culture. This issue spans our fantastic planet and goes to extremes: hot and cold, snow and sand, densely populated and nearly untouched, a repository of history and a city always looking towards the future. There’s no end to the experiences available — especially for those willing and able to go to the ends of the Earth. – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

CULTURE

CULTURED PEARL

Hong Kong’s art, culture and culinary scenes grow in diversity and sophistication. BY KATHY CHIN LEONG

H

ong Kong, nicknamed the Pearl of the Orient, has long been revered as an international finance center and shopping Mecca for tourists. But if all goes as planned, Hong Kong is destined to become the Culture Capital of Asia. Museums, gallery fairs, art-centric hotels and fashion-forward restaurants are elevating Hong Kong’s status. In addition to some 55 art galleries in the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association alone, the eclectic city and island is home to more than 30 museums. Among the largest are the Museum of History (hk.art.museum) and the Heritage Museum (heritagemuseum.gov.hk). By the end of 2019, the massive Hong Kong Art Museum will have opened after an extensive multi-year remodel and expansion. At the same time, the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority is expected to unveil the M+ (westkowloon.hk), a $640 million contemporary museum of visual culture filled with more than 6,000 items from Asia. The government authority is also planning four additional art and performance venues on the same site, known as the West Kowloon Cultural District, a designated arts hub on 100 acres of landfill. Meanwhile, art lovers can anchor their Hong Kong holiday to one or

more events that take place every year, especially in March, when Hong Kong becomes a giant salon with art discussions, cocktail parties and art receptions throughout. The three-day Art Basel (artbasel.com) showcases contemporary art from 248 galleries representing 32 countries with established and emerging artists. Said show director Adeline Ooi in an earlier interview, “If you are involved in art in this part of the world, this is the one show you must attend.” Art Central (artcentralhongkong.com), the Asia Contemporary Art Show (asiacontemporaryart.com), HK Walls (hkwalls.org) focusing on murals and graffiti art, and the Affordable Art Fair (affordableartfair.com/ hongkong) are other popular festivals for art lovers and collectors alike. In the fall, culture fests such as the Asia Contemporary Art Show and Fine Art Asia (fineartasia.com) offer masterpieces from modern and traditional schools. Officially a Special Administrative Region (SAR) belonging to China, Hong Kong still maintains its independence, to some degree, with its own currency and government. Critics, however, }} are concerned that selfcensorship takes place among artists who want to stay below the radar of }}

the Chinese government. Hong Kongers are well aware of the 2015 incident where China security agents allegedly abducted five book purveyors for selling books criticizing government leadership. Nonetheless, there’s plenty of art to go around that avoids pushing political hot buttons. High-end hotels go all out, giving artists and designers a bold voice. Enter décor melding with the historic and modern at Hotel Indigo (ihg.com/ hotelindigo.com) in the working-class-turnedtony Wan Chai district. The boutique hotel’s aim is to stimulate exploration of the immediate community with interiors that reflect Wan Chai. Every room features a turquoise lacquer statue depicting a famous kung fu master who ran his studio in the neighborhood. Pillows are printed with street names. Rooms feature vibrant prints of the Blue House cluster, a 1920s tenement complex with blue, orange and yellow buildings that have been preserved — and attained the 2017 UNECSCO award of excellence for cultural heritage conservation. Classic art with a twist is found at the Intercontinental Hong Kong (hongkong-ic. intercontinental.com), facing the famed Victoria Harbor. This feng shui-inspired hotel features more than 300 original contemporary ink brush paintings throughout the guest floors. The lounge’s wood table centerpiece, carved by a Beijing artist, weighs 2 tons and is shaped as part whale, part grand piano. At its presidential suite, nine glass dragons are displayed in the suite’s office where they symbolically empower the person sitting at the grand desk. Eat at the hotel’s Michelin-starred Yan Toh Heen Chinese restaurant filled with hand-carved jade place settings and room dividers of 100 percent jade. Across the waters at the Ritz-Carlton (ritzcarlton.com) in the International Commerce Centre, the tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong, at 1,588 feet high, leads with knockout design. Go to Ozone, which claims to being the highest lounge in Asia at floor 118. It takes three elevators to get to the pinnacle, but the literally earpopping experience is worth the ride. The Sky Bar could double as a movie set of a blue and white ice planet. The bar resembles a horizontal iceberg, the narrow entry feels like a bluish snow corridor, and the floor and ceiling look like fractured sheets of ice. And the white pillars? Stacked snowballs melting all at once. Kudos go to famed designer Masamichi Katayama of Tokyo-based Wonderwall. For something YouTube addicts will lust after, film your waiter as he delivers you the Hong Kong Skyline specialty cocktail. Hovering over the drink is a spiral of smoke, and the whole

concoction arrives under a clear dome. Your server lifts the glass upon presentation, releasing wafts of smoke, which, of course, depict the Hong Kong clouds. Just as beverages are served with cinematic flair, artful presentation is clearly on tap with food. In Macau, a one-hour ferry ride away, dim sum never had it so Instagram-worthy as in La Chine restaurant at the new Parisian Macau hotel. An order of har-gow (shrimp dumpling) is presented as three goldfish with edible black flecks for eyes, swimming in homemade broth. A dessert soup of almond milk and exotic ingredients is served in a just-sliced coconut shell. Sweet taro arrives on a tapas plate, each piece shaped like a small root layered with yellow paper-thin sheets like an origami fold out. Back in Hong Kong, One Harbour Road (hongkong.grand.hyattrestaurants.com), a restaurant on floors 7 and 8 of the Grand Hyatt Hotel, is the place to toast special occasions. Visitors are whisked to an imaginary 1930s Shanghai mansion with a large mosaic fountain, unique plates for each guest and a sweeping curved stairway, not to mention harbor views. Dim sum and Cantonese dishes are prepared with an ecological conscience. Only sustainable seafood and fish are utilized as ingredients. Unobtrusive servers are quick to switch out soiled plates and refill tea cups before they are empty. And at The Popsy Room (thepopsyroom. com), owner Jennifer Chung, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, creates a gourmand’s extravaganza where eight-course dinners sync up with artwork on the walls and music during the meal. She curates the “galleristic dining” herself with rotating exhibitions. Said Chung, “People don’t have to feel dumb when it comes to art. Food is a great communication tool.” Ever-changing menus are not necessarily based on Chinese cuisine: Last year diners supped on Spanish beef tartare and baked quail with black rice, each a photographic treasure. With design-driven restaurants and hotels, art fairs and an increasing number of museums and performance facilities, Hong Kongers are confident that the region of over 7 million residents will only grow more appreciative of modern and fine art, music, architecture and creative endeavors of various disciplines. Said Ooi, Asia director of Art Basel, “There is a healthy art scene (here) and a community that supports the arts.” Like Ooi, many are convinced that the Pearl of the Orient is rising to become a precious cultural diamond. v

TRAVEL

D

uring my first trip to Africa, I was a narrowminded 20-year-old whose thoughts wandered no further than the surf. It was 1985 and I was part of a U.S. National Team of surfers competing against the Springboks, the South African National Team. The experience widened my mind beyond the next wave. At the time, apartheid still gripped the country with an iron fist. Events were held in Durban and along the Wild Coast. National team members stayed with host families, many of whom had immigrated to South Africa from Germany and England. The team had a one-week break that was spent surfing the famed, long point break of Jeffreys Bay. When we arrived in the morning it was flat. One hour before sunset it was 6 to 8-feet and the Super Tubes surfing event was kicking off. Between surfs, I found myself walking in the small beach town, where I witnessed a young, black South African boy taken away by the police. They stopped, grabbed him and threw him in the back of a car and drove away. He seemed to be minding his own business . . . and then he was gone. At this time I also discovered the South African author Wilbur Smith, becoming hooked with the first page of The Leopard Hunts in Darkness. Since then I’ve read well over 20 of his novels, each as captivating as the last. The two sons of my host family in Cape Town took me surfing. Many of those surf spots didn’t have names, and no one was around. One day they took me on a hike to the Cape of Good Hope, near the end of the continent. My mind widened further. We were walking amongst herds of wildebeest and Cape mountain zebra and troops of busy baboons. The rugged, daunting, wave-battered coastline was magnificent. I was utterly entranced. I told myself, the next time I return to Africa I’ll bring a camera. Fourteen trips later and counting, I’ve kept that promise. AN ENCOUNTER IN SAVUTI It had been a long, teeth-rattling rodeo in a seasoned Land Rover. I desperately needed to get out and stretch my legs, and did so once I reached a tented camp in Savuti, Botswana. My tent was situated beneath a canopy of acacia and sausage trees, and after dropping off my gear, I strolled through the forest beyond the tented camp. As large as the African elephant is, it can be just as stealthy as a lurking leopard and, at times, equally well-camouflaged. I was shocked when I nearly walked directly into the hindquarters of a large tusker hidden behind three acacia trees. I had startled the beast (an older elephant missing most of its tusks) as well when I stepped on a fallen branch. The crackling, splintered limb forced the elephant to react, doing a dramatic 180 in my direction. I slowly stepped away as it displayed its dominance: the repeated tossing of its enormous head, ears flared and flapping, plumes of dust (stirred up by its long trunk) engulfing us both. To say I was intimidated would be an understatement. I turned tail and fled the short distance back to camp with the elephant in hot pursuit. Another Savuti camp visitor happened to record the encounter. The elephant got so close that the videographer also had to ditch his camera and run, the elephant knocking over his tripod. The elephant halted its chase once }} we reached the tents.

WILD KINGDOM: Southern Africa is home to both beautiful wildlife and landscapes of stark, surreal beauty. Later that afternoon, we relived the moment and watched the video, observing just how close the agitated elephant had come. In the recording I emerged from a thick, billowing cloud of dust with the elephant right on my heels. That evening I slept soundly until I was awakened by the heavy pitter-patter of rain pelting the roof of my tent . . . or so I thought. Within my sleepy haze I noticed a brilliant full moon, shafts of light filtering through the tall trees. I checked my watch: 3 a.m. Then I heard what sounded like rain again. I sat up, watched and listened. Silhouetted in the moonlight, its massive rump casting shadows where I slept, was an elephant standing at the entrance of my tent. The tent was situated under a large sausage tree, and the elephant was shaking its limbs while pods rained down from above. The tusker would then use its handy trunk to sweep the roof of the tent, heaving tasty pods onto the ground for quick consumption I noticed its lack of prominent tusks, and it occurred to me that this might be the same elephant that had chased me earlier in the day. I already knew that elephants were one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. Could it be that this tusker would remember me? The elephant circled the tent and began shaking the sausage tree on the opposite side. I quickly dressed, unzipped the tent and briskly walked toward the kitchen. By this time dawn had descended over Savuti, and the camp staff began to stir. When I reached a small clearing in the trees, I turned and peered over my shoulder. The elephant and I locked eyes. Its dull, stubby tusk was barely visible, but its loud, ominous trumpet signified its mighty stature in the bush. DRIVEN TO DISTRACTION IN DEADVLEI I normally drive slowly in Africa, never wanting to miss a thing, especially with such diversified flora and fauna at every bend in a rutted road. This time, though, I was chasing the dawn: First light is everything in the Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia. Home to a section of the Namib

Desert, the oldest desert in the world, along with the tallest sand dunes in the world (some towering to 1,000 feet), the park also features another natural wonder — the dried, cracked salt and clay pans of the Sossusvlei. The nearby Deadvlei hosts a forest of dead, 500-year-old camel thorn trees surrounded by sheer walls of red, pink and orange wind-driven sand. Sossusvlei has several meanings. The road to this region of the park hits a dead end, so “sossus” in the Nama tongue means “no return.” Vlei is an Afrikaans word meaning “marsh.” The water that rarely collects there has no outflows and becomes trapped, evaporating in those desert environs that seem so harsh, yet so starkly beautiful. First light is optimal in Deadvlei because the colors can be mind-blowing. Driving there, however, requires much discipline. I would be fishtailing through the desert, gravel flying off the Jeep’s tires, when suddenly I’d spy a majestic gemsbok in the foreground of the dunes or ostriches tiptoeing in the African bush. Another distraction is the sheer beauty. There may not be a more epic, romantic landscape in all of Africa than Sossusvlei, with its perfect, wind-groomed dunes. After getting stuck in the soft sand and trying to ignore too many photo opportunities to count, I finally found myself in the middle of my destination. I may not have made first light, but the road to Deadvlei did not disappoint. CEDERBERG MOUNTAINS Leaving beautiful Cape Town for the 300-kilometer drive north along the Western Cape was a welcome diversion from what had become a crowded destination at the southern end of the continent. The Cederberg Mountains beckoned. It is a land where rare and endangered wildlife still hangs in the balance and extraordinary rock art can be observed. Left by the San Bushmen, the Cederberg’s rock art dates back 10,000 years and is hidden on smooth sandstone caves and overhangs clustered throughout this breathtak-

ing mountain range. I stayed at the posh Bushmans Kloof, an award-winning resort in the northern Cederberg Range. This ecological oasis has over 130 rock art sites and is a South African Natural Heritage Site. Around 750 plant species can be found, and wildlife still abounds: over 130 bird species, including the striking malachite sunbird, and over 35 mammal species, such as the Cape leopard, caracal, the endangered Cape mountain zebra and bontebok. The night life is equally impressive, with aardwolf, African wildcat, bat-eared fox, Cape fox, porcupine and other nocturnal species foraging under the cloak of darkness. It didn’t take me long to locate a malachite sunbird. There was no denying its beauty against the native flora right outside my chalet along a flowing creek. It was a male, whose feathers are a shimmering metallic green during breeding season. Its vivid color only intensifies in the bright sunlight. A fitting symbol for the color, drama and majesty of the myriad landscapes and creatures that reside under the southern African sun. v JEFFREYS BAY, SOUTH AFRICA +27 (0)42 293 2923 info@jeffreysbaytourism.org www.jeffreysbaytourism.org CAMP SAVUTI, BOTSWANA +27 21 712 5284 reservations@sundestinations.co.za www.campsavuti.com NAMIB-NAUKLUFT NATIONAL PARK, NAMIBIA namibnaukluftpark.com www.info-namibia.com/activities-and-placesof-interest/sossusvlei/namib-naukluft-park BUSHMANS KLOOF WILDERNESS RESERVE AND WELLNESS RETREAT, SOUTH AFRICA +27 27 482 8200 reservations@bushmanskloof.co.za www.bushmanskloof.co.za

Exploring early American history and New England cuisine in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and their isles.

ABOUT TOWN

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD STORY AND PHOTOS BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK

GUIDING LIGHT: Lighthouses are some of the most recognizable landmarks on the New England coastline, and the Sankaty Head Light is no exception. Built in 1850 on the easternmost point of Nantucket Island in the village of Siasconset, it alerted mariners to hazardous shoals in the surrounding waters. It is still in operation today.

B

oston makes an excellent beginning to any tour of the northeastern United States. Arriving a night early, my pre-tour included the fantastic Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the delightful Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Another highlight was a delicious dinner at a Brazilian restaurant off the beaten tourist track— a great kickoff before a week of seafood, pilgrims and U.S. history lessons. DAY 1: HISTORY, GILDED AGE SPLENDOR AND LOBSTER ROLLS Forty-five people board the bus for the first day of a seven-night Islands of Massachusetts tour with travel company Collette. We are based in Provincetown, Rhode Island, for the first three nights, where we receive a crashcourse in U.S. history and the American Revolution, as well as more in-depth knowledge of the early colonies. We visit the impressive State House, drive past Brown University and 28

learn about its founders, the Brown brothers, as well as all kinds of cool factoids about Providence from our great guide, Brenda. Later we take the bus to Newport, with enough time to sample a terrific lobster roll sold from the Newport Lobster Shack food truck, which boasts a fantastic view of the harbor. I feel obliged to sample a tasty bowl of original “clear broth” Rhode Island clam chowder at the atmospheric White Horse Tavern, opened in 1673 and one of the oldest bars in North America. It also appeared on the silver screen: Steven Spielberg filmed some scenes for Amistad here. Another highlight: a tour of Marble House, one of the Gilded Age mansions. This 19th century “summer cottage,” built along the waterfront for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt, allows a peek into another place and time in U.S. history. Back at home base in Providence, we enjoy a family-style Italian dinner, with enough platters of }} food to feed a Continental Army.

DAY 2: EARLY AMERICAN HISTORY 2.0 The tour continues in Boston, where we walk a portion of the Freedom Trail, see Paul Revere’s house being restored, and visit the Old North Church (officially Christ Church, 1723, one of four churches and 16 stops on the trail). This is where, in 1775, American patriots (church sexton Robert Newman and Vestryman Capt. John Pulling Jr.) stole away in the middle of the night, climbed to the top of the steeple and hung two lanterns to warn the colonists/resistance movement that the Red Coats were coming by water. “One if by land, two if by sea” was Longfellow’s artistic license — the British actually crossed the Charles River. The event officially kicked off the American Revolution. After our stroll, I enjoy a big bowl of plump mussels served at the counter/bar at “America’s oldest restaurant,” Union Oyster House (dating back to pre-Revolutionary times, it started serving food in 1826), frequented by many a patriot, including a young Sen. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who is rumored to have loved the lobster stew for breakfast while poring over all the daily newspapers. Beantown is steeped in history — colonial days, the American Revolution, the reading of the Declaration of Independence, Fenway Park, black history and more. I could spend a week here. At day’s end, it’s time to pack up and relocate to the sea — and another day of adventures, both historical and culinary. DAY 3: EAT LIKE A PILGRIM Bright and early, we pile onto the bus to hit the countryside, followed by the seaside town of Falmouth. En route we visit a dry cranberry bog and, later, a water mill where non-GMO organic fresh-ground cornmeal is available for purchase. We proceed to the heavily symbolic and very crowded Plymouth Rock. An “eat like a pilgrim” lunch at Plimoth Plantation included tasty turkey; squash flavored with ginger, pepper and vinegar; homemade bread; pickles, cheese and grapes — topped off with a pudding that tasted like a cross between pumpkin pie and gingerbread. The setting is a re-creation of early colonial life/living history museum. It was truly lovely, but I felt uncomfortable watching modern-day Native Americans on display demonstrating for the white man. Our Cape Cod accommodations for the next four nights of island explorations are at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel. DAY 4: NANTUCKET, HERE WE COME! Our bus takes us to Hyannis, the “Capital of the Cape,” where a flock of geese wander at one of many JFK memorials we pass on the tour. From there, high-speed ferry Gray Lady 2 whisks us in just 40 minutes to the charming island of Nantucket, where I grab a clam chowder for $2.99 at the local Stop-N-Go market to eat on a bench harborside. This town is cute, filled with shops, and I am glad we are here at the end of the summer sea-

son, when crowds have thinned. We return to Hyannis and have another tasty Italian dinner — complete with a Littleneck clam shucking demo (yum!) and a scrumptious pork osso bucco. DAY 5: MARTHA’S VINEYARD We push off in the morning for Martha’s Vineyard and Edgartown, which boast a rich past and much living history. Our guide sprinkled bits of local gossip into her historic tour: naughty affairs of the Kennedys, juicy tidbits about Barbara Walters and others. I headed to the Provincetown Art Association and Museum where I chatted with another visitor, Mark. Turns out we shared a very good friend in common — 3,000 miles away! Mark and I wandered the town and I got a good dose of local gossip over Russian oysters (Wellfleets with sour cream and caviar) at Lobster Pot Restaurant and a glass of wine while Mark regaled me with stories of the town he knew so well. For a brief afternoon, I felt as if I belonged. Later at the hotel, we chowed down for our enormous, last-night lobster feed, with clams and mussels and corn on the cob. I had bonded with two wonderful women from Virginia and felt a special connection to Shirley, whose husband had worked for the State Department. We embraced as we said goodbye. Isn’t that what life is about? Memories and connections — and I took home both, feeling quite pleased in the end. v

COVER STORY

POLE TO POLE An interview with nature photographer Ira Meyer. BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER PHOTOS BY IRA MEYER

O

xnard resident Ira Meyer has spent decades exploring the vast beauty of the world and its people through a lens. After a transformative trip through the wilds of Alaska, he embraced photography as both an art form and a career, traveling the globe in search of inspiration, awe and grace. The searing colors of Southeast Asia, the verdant forests of Yosemite and the austere yet alluring hills of the Middle East have all been captured by Meyer’s perceptive eye. His current passion is the icy splendor and fragility of the Arctic and Antarctica. Meyer spoke to Ventana Monthly about his beginnings, his travels and his obsession with Earth’s polar opposites. Are you from California originally? I was born and reared in the Bronx, New York. I spent nearly 20 years in Colorado, Great Britain, Texas, Arkansas and Florida before settling in California at the beginning of 1988. When did you get into photography?

GLACIAL PACE: “Antarctica, in particular, is nature at its purist,” says Ira Meyer (pictured above). He captures the beauty, majesty and stillness of this frozen world in “Iceberg and Mountains Reflected, Dorian Bay, Antarctica” (top).

Once an avid bicyclist, I got hit by a passing car while on an 80-mile training ride with some friends. Broken ribs and scapula, }}

as well as a ruptured spleen, required hospitalization and surgery. Then the owner of a small landscaping and lawn maintenance business, I was out of work for three months. But I regained my health and strength, completing the 172-mile Cross-Florida bicycle ride less than a year later at a best-ever pace of over 20 mph. Then living in north central Florida, May brought on summer. Five consecutive days of 90+ degree temperatures with 90 percent humidity left me realizing it wasn’t going to get any cooler until the end of September . . . and that I’d had my fill of this work and climate. So I put my business up for sale, and was lucky to manage to sell it within about six weeks. Having just turned 40, I found myself not owning a business or home, nor involved in a relationship for the first time in quite a few years. I thought: When does someone have this kind of freedom? So I bought a used van in which to drive to Alaska. Knowing I was going to drive up some scenic roads and hike some gorgeous trails on a 6,000mile journey transecting the continent, I purchased my first-ever camera: a $180 Fuji point-and-shoot. What first brought you to Oxnard, and why have you chosen to make this your home? I lived in Malibu for the first decade I was in SoCal, leaving when it ceased to be affordable. At the time, I knew the Agoura/Thousand Oaks area much better than Oxnard/Ventura. But life in proximity to the coast suits me much better. Your first big road trip post-landscaping was Alaska. Why? When people asked me “Why Alaska,” my answer was simple: Everyone I knew who had been there was either waiting to go back . . . or still there. What made you fall in love with photography? When focused and clear, I revel in the exquisite intricacy of the world we live in. Looking through the viewfinder of my camera often facilitates this perception. As my mind becomes quiet, I respond to a feeling that stems from within me. This seems a part of, and in tune with, that which surrounds me. What were some of your earliest gigs? I began honing my skills by stealing away to the Sierra for long weekends whenever it was possible, then took a four-month journey to India, Nepal and Southeast Asia. I started producing note cards, which I sold at a number of local shops. I decided to get a booth at the Malibu Arts Festival. My work was well-received and led to more art shows, which have now provided the bulk of my livelihood for over a quartercentury. Was there a point that you made the jump to the big leagues? I’ll let you know if I ever get to them. But you did land a cover for National Geographic in 2008. What brought you to its attention? A photo-rep I knew years ago called me one day saying she’d been contacted by NG to submit images for an atlas they were publishing, and wondered if I might have some photos of areas for which she had no coverage. Of the 20 of my images she submitted, four were used. Several years later, NG started doing a section in their magazine called “Visions of Earth.” I had just been to Antarctica, and thought I might have }}

COLD COMFORT: A polar bear and her cub, seemingly stranded on an ice floe in the Olga Strait near Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean. This poignant depiction of the fragility of life in the Arctic landed on the cover of the Turkish version of National Geographic’s Climate Change Special Edition of 2008.

GLOBE TROTTER: The land and wildlife on or near Antarctica and the Southern Ocean (“Fur Seal and King Penguins,” above) have occupied Meyer for the last decade, but his vast body of work spans the globe, from Vietnam (“Pixie of an Old Woman”) to India (“Jaisalmeri Jeune Fille”) to California’s Central Coast (“Monarch Cluster #5”).

some suitable images. So I called NG’s offices in Washington, D.C. I think the fact that my work had been used in the atlas opened the door to my speaking with one of their photo editors, whom I would then send photos to each time I came back from the polar regions. Tell us a little about that cover shot. Svalbard is an archipelago surrounded by the Barents, Norwegian and Greenland Seas, as well as the Arctic Ocean, nearly halfway between the north of Norway and the North Pole. I was on a ship circumnavigating its largest island, Spitsbergen, when a mother polar bear and cub on a small ice floe were spotted in Olgastretet (the Olga Strait). As a staff member, I had a radio. So I immediately heard of the spotting, and dashed to the port bow with my camera. The captain deftly maneuvered the ship to within about 150 yards of the bears, which we spent 10 minutes observing. I took around 75 photographs . . . of which the third was the only one where they both were looking towards my camera. You’ve photographed Southeast Asia, India, Argentina, the Yukon — all very different and distinct regions of the world. What about each did you find most inspiring? I’ve been to India four times, finding it fascinating. . . . It is incredibly rich culturally and socially. Its sights, sounds, tastes, smells and colors seem to “attack” all of one’s senses simultaneously. Thai and Laotian people are such simple, sweet, lovely souls. Their Buddhist culture/upbringing, in which equanimity is highly regarded, creates a completely different atmosphere than what we might be accustomed to. . . . [In Vietname] everyone thought I was Soviet. Though I have always thought of myself more as a citizen of the Earth than any of its countries, I felt compelled to let them know I was American. Their response generally left me somewhat overwhelmed. It was as if I was the ghost of a dear old friend come back to life. Your work over the last decade has been the Arctic and Antarctica. What about these environments inspires you? While traveling in Patagonia in 1991, I made my way to Punta Arenas, Chile, then to the port from which ships left for Antarctica. This was a destination I’d never considered traveling before. But I thought: I’ll never be this close again. So I went down to the docks to see if I could find a ship going that way, and was incredibly fortunate to find one heading down to pack up a scientific base that was

taking some passengers. $880 got me to the ice continent. Early the first morning, I was on deck and said to someone, “We’re not in Kansas anymore, are we, Toto?” The beauty was otherworldly. To say the least, I was gobsmacked. I’ve long loved the early mornings when everyone else is asleep, as there has always seemed to be less static on the radio waves (of life) then. It is always like that in the polar regions. Antarctica, in particular, is nature at its absolute purest. The air is delicious to breathe. And there is a stillness that penetrates to the tips of one’s toes. Though I cannot document this, it seems to be transformative. Are you trying to capture or document something in particular? I believe the planet will be healthier if we keep places like the polar regions pristine. As so few people have ever traveled to them, they most likely view them as vast wastelands of ice. I feel extremely fortunate to have spent the amount of time I have there, and privileged to be able to bring back glimpses of their splendor, so that others might have a greater sense of their beauty and importance. How is documenting the polar environments different? Though the underlying feeling of the Arctic and Antarctic is quite similar to me, they are vastly different. I love the Arctic. Antarctica, however, has captured a bit of my soul. I’ve taken thousands of photographs, yet at best only capture snippets. I have written and talked about it at great length, but have as yet found no words to describe just how “ginormous” it is . . . and how it humbles me. Some years ago, we had a former Canadian astronaut as one of our guests onboard. A short while later I received an email from him, in which he said that returning home from Antarctica wasn’t at all dissimilar to returning to Earth from space. Are there are other places that call to you? I’ve dreamt of the wilds of Africa since I was a boy, but haven’t been there yet. But as I said to a friend a short while ago: There’s no place that I haven’t been that I want to go to more than I want to go back to Antarctica. v Ira Meyer will show and sell his work at Art in the Park held May 26-27 at Libbey Park, 205 East Ojai Avenue, Ojai, and also at the Fourth of July Street Fair in Downtown Ventura.
