WINGS OF IMAGINATION

H

ow many of us would see an old airplane in a scrap yard and think, “That would make a great house?” It’s a leap of both imagination and engineering, to be sure. But architect David Hertz of the S.E.A. Studio of Environmental Architecture is very comfortable thinking outside of the “little boxes” of tract housing. His specialty is environmentally responsible buildings, which he designs with an eye towards innovation and creativity. The Wing House encompasses all of those things, to magnificent effect, making the most industrial design elements – wings, fuselage, tail fins, landing lights and other pieces of a Boeing 747 — seem perfectly at home in a stylish hillside residence. The plane’s look isn’t lost, but incorporated into the design, resulting in a house with a contemporary-cool, futuristic vibe that is still elegant and even a little soft. Being willing to take a plunge into the “what ifs” can lead to amazing things. On a charming channelside lot near Oxnard’s Seabridge neighborhood, Adrienne and Art Stone built a two-story house that encompassed everything they loved: eclectic art, space for entertaining friends and family, floor-to-ceiling windows with unparalleled views of the water, even a small movie theater where they could enjoy their beloved classic movies. The one thing this narrow parcel of prime real estate lacked was outdoor space. But what if they purchased the neighboring lot, and devoted it purely to lush botanicals? The Stones created a personal palace on the sea, next door to their own Garden

of Eden — now that’s aspirational living! For Brooke and Steve Giannetti, the dream was a piece of the Old World here at home. So they transformed a five-acre property in Ojai into a European country-style estate, complete with antique furnishings, French terra-cotta roof tyles, vintage barn beams and more. Add some chickens, donkeys, and an impressive garden, and you get a landscape both charming in its simplicity and luxurious in its expanse and attention to detail. Marie Antoinette at her Petite Trianon comes to mind. For some residents of Ojai and Ventura, dreams were shattered rather than realized when the Thomas Fire destroyed their homes. As these property owners face the arduous prospect of rebuilding, several architects share their thoughts on the best way to move forward. What if, they ask in an illuminating roundtable discussion, old tract-style homes could instead feature passive heating and cooling, flexible layouts, even roof gardens? These building and design professionals suggest that these attractive, energy-efficient and cost-effective approaches are not so far-fetched. The key here is vision: an ability to see something different than what has come before, to devise new ways to do something ordinary, to figure out a way to turn fantasy into reality. We can’t all have a garden paradise or a Wing House . . . but we can all dream, and let our imaginations take flight. Who knows where we’ll land once we do. – Nancy D. EDWARD DEVICENTE

MARTHA PICCIOTTI

THE WAY FORWARD The effects of the Thomas Fire will be felt for months and years to come, particularly for those who lost their homes. As the long, slow process of rebuilding gets underway, Ventana Monthly hosted a roundtable discussion among architects, builders and designers about the challenges and opportunities ahead. Here we present the highlights of that discussion, which has been edited and condensed for space and clarity. PARTICIPANTS Edward deVicente, Principal Architect, AIA CPHC, at DMHA Architecture and Interior Design, Santa Barbara Laura Kay Dunbar, architect, general contractor, owner and CEO, The Akeena Group, Oxnard Jack Kiesel, landscape architect, Kiesel Design, Ventura Martha Picciotti, architect, Picciotti Design, Ventura In some ways, this is an opportunity to sort of reimagine Ventura a little bit — in terms of aesthetics, energy efficiency, smarter design. What changes would you like to see in architecture as we rebuild? LAURA DUNBAR: I think that one of the hidden gems in this whole tragedy is that we have a lot of hillside homes that were burned. And a lot of those homes were tract-type homes that were not site-specific. They did not take advantage of the site, they did not take advantage of the view, they were in some ways poorly designed. So this is an opportunity for people to build back better. What aesthetic changes do you picture? MARTHA PICCIOTTI: Open floor plans. You know, windows and doors today are so different from what they were before, so there’s so much more opportunity for more indoor/outdoor 10

— especially, I think, if we take into consideration sitting the buildings on the site differently. What about the landscaping? JACK KIESEL: There are tons of new opportunities here. I think a lot of those hillside landscapes are covered in ivy and ice plants, things of that nature, and I think this is an opportunity to bring in more native plant materials and obviously making the landscapes more fireresistant. Natives also are a great habitat for the small animals we have in the area and the water requirements are a lot less than a lot of stuff that you’re seeing out there. How will design strategy change? ED deVICENTE: What was there before was 1960s and 1970s architecture. Design philosophy really shifted in the 1950s, when the air conditioner came into being. We could plug this thing into our house and essentially turn our back on nature, and our buildings started to respond to less control or less response to indoor/outdoor. … As people have kind of explored the new architecture related to energy efficiency, we’ve actually gone back to the past of using passive design strategies. … The siting that Laura talked about, proper passive heating [and] cooling of homes. Ventura is a wonderful place to do that. PICCIOTTI: People live very differently from

how they lived before. … They had a formal living room and then they had a kitchen so each room was closed off, and I think we all know that we live very differently with open floor plans and more flexible places, some of which are just a place to put your laptop. So the Internet and computer have also changed how we live in our houses and interact with devices. … It’s also brought an opportunity for people to age in their homes — we have walk-in showers, we have wider hallways, just a lot of things that we didn’t have before. DUNBAR: And I’d like to add to that … if you do that from the beginning, it’s not that expensive. It’s retrofitting that’s more expensive. But … putting light switches at different heights, building wider hallways in the beginning — they don’t add a lot more cost, but they add value to the home and they add the ability to age there if you’d like. And the other thing that I think is huge is, when these houses were built, you weren’t allowed to have a separate living quarters. … Our zoning codes [were] so restrictive that we could not have our mother or our child come and live independently in our own home. … Now we are able to have accessible dwelling units (ADUs) in every single house. What design changes may take place to improve fire safety? DUNBAR: Many of those houses … used to

LAU

JACK KIESEL

have wood shingles. We now have the [better] fire code, and we also have much stricter soils and foundation requirements, which really is probably a game-changer for these people. deVICENTE: There are so many available materials … and very cost-effective to treat fireresistant details. The biggest part, though, is really landscaping — keeping combustible material away from your home. KIESEL: Where plants are situated is important, too. Typically you want your house to be 15 feet away from the [tree] canopy. … You have different fire zones, but 30 feet is kind of your defensible zone, and that’s where you want to have stuff around 12 inches high, roughly. … You want to irrigate semiregularly so the moisture of the plants when the fire does come acts as a buffer. Getting rid of any dead growth, that’s huge. It’s important to incorporate as many natives as possible. You don’t want to use eucalyptus trees or palm trees. Palm trees can be candles.

where we’ve turned an ADU garage into a living space. ... You can actually make it as private or as combined a space as you want and still give your family member their own private space. They can still be independent. I do think that will be a really big trend as our parents age and we age. deVICENTE: But everything we’re talking about ... all comes down to a shift of priority. We used to prioritize highly formal dining rooms and living rooms and all those things, and now the priority has gone to shared social spaces and openness. … It’s not about building back the size of the home you had before, it’s about building to our new lifestyles. … And having a home that responds to that. DUNBAR: If you have a good designer you can build a better space in less square footage. That’s the key element. … Sometimes a smaller space is a better space.

Are house layouts different now? What trends do you see emerging?

KIESEL: Roof gardens. We are working on a little project right now utilizing that roof, planning it as outdoor space. If you go smaller in your square footage but still have a roof, you can recapture that [outdoor area] — especially in these hillside homes. They have incredible view potentials and then sometimes the slopes are so extreme that it’s kind of cost-prohibitive to do a lot of landscape terracing. … The waterproofing is a little more intensive obviously and … the engineering is a little bit more robust, but I think if you’re building from scratch I don’t know if it’s that much more. DUNBAR: It’s a newer sort of thought process, outdoor spaces. … Now what we’re looking at is creating different spaces — some shaded, some open, some enclosed by garden, some really creative spaces outside — and it adds to your square footage. … Especially when you do not

DUNBAR: We’ll see a huge transition period as the millennials start buying homes — because they’re not into so many things. They don’t watch big TV — they watch TV on their little laptops. I really think they are the buyers of the tiny homes. I think that’s an interesting point — there are notions of how much space we need and what we want that to look like. PICCIOTTI: It’s sort of multigenerational, too, because sometimes the other people cannot afford to dwell on their own, so they are living at home longer or coming home after traveling or whatever, and there’s these older people staying with you, too. So I think flexibility is probably the key word. DUNBAR: I’ve designed a multitude of places

What about trends in landscaping?

have the biggest house, you can, you know, create different outdoor rooms. What about financial issues? How can you rebuild within your budget? deVICENTE: It really starts with design and understanding that it’s different for each family. … That’s why we suggest folks work with design professionals, because whatever strategy is best for them, you can help them maximize every dollar, getting the most out of what they have. What are some challenges architects, designers and homeowners will face as rebuilding begins? DUNBAR: I never realized how much I gathered from going to my clients’ house, the information I got just from when I walk in. Oh, they’re clean, they have grandchildren, they have lots of family pictures, they use a microwave, they have a messy kitchen, they have a really cluttered bathroom. … The information gathered in that walk-through is unbelievable, but I never knew I had it until I wasn’t able to walk through. PICCIOTTI: I kinda like the challenge of being forced to build smaller and more thoughtfully in a different way. … Really thinking about using [homeowners’] money really smart to get what [they] want. So it’s kind of fun being challenged. deVICENTE: We [also need to think about the] family and their situation for the next 10, 20, 50 years…how long they want to be in the home. So that intentionality, I think, is the most critical. And the good news is that I would say all of these good design practices we’ve been talking about, they’re pretty mainstream now. People just need to know where to find them. For tips and resources, view this article online at www.ventanamonthly.com. v APRIL 2018

NESTING

BLOOMING BY THE SEA GRAND ENTRANCE: The glamorous great room provides ample room for entertaining, while the stylish metal-and-glass staircase leads to more private (but equally elegant) quarters.

A harborside retreat in Oxnard marries garden serenity with seaside splendor. BY KAREN LINDELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN

I

n an Oxnard garden retreat bursting with colorful blooms, a blackand-white image pops out. On the wall of Adrienne Stone’s greenhouse is a giant vintage photo of her grandfather, Ezra Cohen, taken at his flower stand in downtown Los Angeles during the 1920s. “He raised nine children on that flower stand,” Stone said proudly. Cohen, an immigrant from Aleppo, Syria, passed on his green thumb (and work ethic) to Stone’s father, who also owned a flower shop in L.A., Windsor Florist, for 40 years. Stone remembers tagging along with her dad to ride in a cart at downtown L.A.’s flower mart, and selling cut blooms on street corners. She didn’t go into the blooms biz herself, but continues to surround herself with plants and flowers out of sheer love for anything that grows. In 2003, Stone and her husband, Artie, at the time living in Encino, bought a second house in Oxnard’s Channel Islands Harbor. They eventually decided to purchase a home in the same neighborhood, and the narrow vacant lot next door, which they devoted to a 4,000-square-foot garden and greenhouse, all with a prime perch along the harbor’s main channel. The house and garden flow freely into each other, both physically and

psychically — a green growing oasis created in tandem with a blue seaside oasis. If the garden is the earth element of the Stones’ home, the main house is water. The 6,000-square-foot, custom-built contemporary home boasts premium waterside views, with ceiling-high windows and decks on both floors overlooking Oxnard’s scenic waterway. Much of the artwork and décor throughout the home was commissioned or designed with water in mind, from glass panels with etchings reminiscent of waves, to a curving glass staircase and photographs of the Ventura Pier and Santa Barbara Harbor. Throughout, Stone fills the home with flower arrangements created from blooms in her garden as well as cut ones she purchases. “I can’t be without flowers around me,” she said. Stone and her husband, who married just out of high school and began their careers running hair salons, launched the Total Woman Gym + Spa chain in the 1960s, responding to female clients who expressed interest in a fitness center with day spa amenities. They sold the business about 10 years ago. The couple were drawn to Ventura County when a family member who had purchased a house on the beach in Oxnard suggested that the Stones check out the area. }}

WATER AND EARTH: The greenhouse’s blooming botanicals speak of the soil, but the harborside location is echoed in the seaweed-inspired chairs, shell-like fountains, fishshaped pots and a table held up by a mermaid.

APRIL 2018

In 2003 they purchased a house in the harbor, then several years later bought the home on the current lot, planning to rent it out. Instead, they decided to tear down the house and build a new one to live in themselves. Artie Stone died three years ago of cancer. Adrienne Stone lives in Encino for the first part of the week, then spends most Thursdays through Sundays at the Oxnard property with her daughter, Angela. “Because the lot was so long, the house that was originally there was like a bowling alley,” Stone said. “It was all chopped up into little rooms, and even had a brick fireplace blocking the harbor, which was silly.” When the Stones tore down the small one-story house and rebuilt a two-story one in its place, they solved the bowling-alley effect by turning the first floor into one giant room with a bar, kitchen and dining room. Upstairs are bedrooms and a media room. The home’s overall decorative motif is water-ocean-sea, but Stone said she also found inspiration via a less natural muse: classic films. “I got a lot of ideas from watching TCM (Turner Classic Movies),” she said. “I wanted a 1930s art deco, glamorous look. On the set of a lot of those films, ceilings were tall; doors were big and upholstered; and the furniture was grand.” Upstairs lighting includes floor-to-ceiling sconces, and many of the doors in the house are upholstered, as well as the front of the downstairs bar. Artwork includes a chandelier made out of long tubes of glass on cables, and the curved glass-and-stainless-steel staircase. To create the staircase, Stone said, the builders first had to install it using wood, then took it to a workshop to build it out of steel and reinstalled it. For windows that face neighbors, Stone said, she wanted to let the light in, but also desired privacy — without drapes. So the windows were designed out of frosted glass etched with Asian-inspired images of vines, flowers and bridges. Outside those windows are the living, breathing plants and flowers that Stone and a crew of gardeners care for so lovingly. The garden includes a cornucopia of fruit trees: lemon, orange, tangerine, pomegranate and apple. Stand-alone rectangular planters are anchored by boxwood hedges and filled with flowers that change seasonally for spring and fall. Current blooms include candytuft, lobelia, ranunculus, primroses, hydrangeas, orchids, gardenias, kangaroo paws and roses. In late April, Stone said, she’ll likely plant gerbera daisies, stock and snapdragons. The light, airy greenhouse, which Stone designed, is filled with succulents and orchids she uses to create flower arrangements. She doesn’t like throwing away potential creative material. “When my gardeners cut back roses and leave them lying around in the trash or on the ground, I make an arrangement,” Stone said. “I can’t throw away any of it. Even if it’s a teeny thing with one flower in it, it’s not dead yet. It’s a living, breathing thing.” Obtaining a permit from the city to build the 400-square-foot greenhouse, she said, was a challenge — the process took a year.

“They thought we were building a guesthouse, which meant we would have needed a bathroom and other things,” she said. “We then called it a ‘solarium.’ Eventually someone from the city who was interested in plants came here and I explained what we were doing. Finally, he got it.” Nonliving decorative aspects of Stone’s garden include numerous colorful pots, a glass table in the greenhouse held up by a mermaid sculpture, a wind-chime chandelier made out of iridescent square shells, chairs that resemble seaweed and two benches shaped like butterflies. Stone’s favorite work of art in her home integrates the interior with the exterior. Inside the front door is an art piece featuring butterflies — real butterflies that once lived at a sanctuary in Santa Barbara — of red, blue, orange and yellow hung on lighted strings. They are placed in a lighted mirror that creates an infinity effect. “I fell in love with the butterflies,” Stone said. “Anybody who walks in, when I turn the light on, just stares at them.” The butterflies also remind her of someone who is no longer in the home, or the garden, but still very much a part of both. “Whenever I see a butterfly, wherever I am, I believe it’s my husband coming to pay me a visit,” she said. v

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a view to the channel even from the upstairs master bedroom, which boasts its own sitting area. A stone walkway winds through a lush garden, leading to a spacious solarium for dining, entertaining or merely basking in organic serenity. Adrienne Stone, a florist’s daughter and granddaughter, always surrounds herself with fresh blooms and fruit from her personal paradise.

COVER STORY

HIGH-FLYING DESIGN Radical reuse and extreme recycling soar at the Wing House in the Santa Monica Mountains. BY MARK STORER | PHOTOS COURTESY OF STUDIO EA

T

he Boeing 747 in all its variants is one of the most recognizable aircraft flying today. The iconic slow-sloping humpbacked jet was the mainstay of transcontinental travel throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and that familiar shape remains a high point of design and engineering. In passenger service, however, it has nearly come to the end of its time, as most airlines are retiring the aged jumbo jet in favor of newer, more modern aircraft. Near California City in the Mojave Desert, at what is affectionately known as the “airliner graveyard, one can see dozens of 747s being carved up for parts }} and metal by avionics and aviation enthusiasts.

INTO THE WILD BLUE YONDER: Extending out past the exterior wall and over the patio, the expansive wing of a 747 seems to soar over the house and toward the sky. An engine cowling has been cleverly converted into a fire pit. Its twin (not shown) is a water feature on the other side.

Indeed, it’s where architect David Hertz came across an old Boeing 747-200 built in 1970 — reportedly the 28th one built — and originally owned by Trans World Airlines. Retired by TWA in 1992, it was later purchased by former charter airline Tower Air (which ceased operations in 2000) for scrap. When Hertz acquired it, he envisioned repurposing it not for spare parts or metal fabrication, but for a unique residence that he was tasked to build above the coast in the Santa Monica Mountains in Ventura County. It wasn’t just trickery or whimsy that led Hertz to the aircraft, either, but a careful partnership with Francie Rehwald, a retired automobile dealership owner who sought out a suitable place to build a unique home for years. Rehwald settled on 55 acres above the Pacific Ocean with sweeping views of Anacapa, Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara Islands to the southwest and of the Oxnard plain to the north. The pair had in common the desire to reuse materials in what amounts to a kind of extreme recycling, allowing what is old to become new again and creating useful and aesthetically provocative habitats. “This land up here was first sort of developed and used by Tony Duquette,” said Hertz. “He was a Hollywood set designer and artist and he was sort of known for radical reuse and repurposing of materials.” Hertz, whose office is in Venice, became a student of Duquette’s work and now owns 42 acres adjacent to Rehwald’s that include a compound known as Xanabu, built by Duquette some 60 years ago. “I became interested in working with those kinds of materials,” Hertz said. “A part of it is how do you not use primary materials to create buildings and instead find what’s already there to build.” Since then, Hertz has made a unique career as an architect choosing to reuse, repurpose and recycle materials of various kinds to create buildings and homes all over Southern California. Hertz’s own family history has long roots in the Santa Monica Mountains and along the border of Ventura and Los Angeles Counties. His father and uncle built Paramount Ranch and he has always had an affinity for the landscape here. He knew Rehwald’s property well. Rehwald hired Hertz after an exhaustive search and interviews with many architects. In the end, their visions for the home she wanted to build were similar. “I stood on that property and couldn’t imagine a building with a wall and a window,” Hertz said. “The idea was to create a floating roof that didn’t have any walls and had floor-to-ceiling glass.” But where Hertz’s original design was what Rehwald refers to as “more masculine,” with straight lines and defined angles, she wanted a more feminine aesthetic. “I started thinking about feminine form, applying that here, and I happened to be traveling when I looked out at the airplane and really saw how curved and how light and sort of diaphanous it was.” Duquette’s spirit lives on the property with a number of pagodalike structures and other statuary, some from films he worked on, which he built from recycled materials gathered from Naval Base Ventura County surplus. They dot the approach to the Wing House, which isn’t visible until you come up next to it. The story of how the house was built was covered in local and even international media. The aircraft measured over 230 feet long, 195 feet wide and 63 feet tall. The airplane was precisely carved into pieces and hauled by truck to Camarillo Airport. When it was time to deliver the wings to the property, they were carried via sky crane helicopter over the Santa Monica Mountains and gently laid down as a team of contractors expertly began to put the two wings and the tail wings together. “It was luck, good fortune that brought me here,” said Rehwald. “I love being up here. It’s the peace and tranquility of these hills.” Hertz echoed her sentiments. “It’s magical up here with the views }}

CURVES AHEAD: The wings, in cross section, are surprisingly curvaceous, lending the house a softer, more feminine aspect that makes an elegant contrast to the hard-edged industrial materials — metal, glass, concrete — used in its design.

NIGHT FLIGHT: By day or night, the Wing House creates a dramatic outline against landscape and skyscape alike.

of ocean and the mountains. It’s one of the more unique places in the world.” Netflix thought so, too, and Rehwald’s home is featured in a show that appears on the streaming service called World’s Most Extraordinary Homes. The house is actually a pair of buildings and the surrounding yard or compound, including a pool and a number of simple gardens, with a water feature made from one of the four engine cowlings of the aircraft. The main house where Rehwald lives is a broad open-floor plan with simple concrete walls toward the back of the structure and a window for a wall on the front side. The kitchen, dining area, great room and sitting room all flow into one. The wing-asceiling is in full view and the wing’s lights serve as ambient lighting in the house now. The windows open at both the front and the back of the house, allowing for cool breezes. Rehwald used a part of the fuselage to separate an office from the kitchen. “It was the idea of recycling or reusing something that was really exciting to me,” said Rehwald. “When I got to see the airplane, that’s when I knew — standing underneath it. It was so beautiful.” Rehwald was very active in building her home and even worked on the wing itself, turning screws and polishing metal. She worked with a friend on the design of the landscape, and together they built simple gardens with an Asian theme to soften the sharper edges of the property, using local plants and flowers, all of which seem to point back to the views of the hillsides and the mountains. A winding staircase, originally designed to reuse the aircraft’s first-class stairwell, leads up to the large single bedroom. “The building code wouldn’t allow for that narrow stairwell,” said Rehwald, “so we had a metal fabricator design this one.” In the upstairs bedroom, roofed in by the tail fins of the air24

craft, the wall of windows continues. Outside, the landing lights of the wing serve as lights on the garden. “It took six years to build and I’ve lived here for seven,” said Rehwald, who took up occupancy in a trailer while the house was being built. Both the main house and the guest wing use hot water ambient heating — also called hydronic radiant heating — that runs under the concrete floor. The guest wing sits adjacent to the pool and Jacuzzi and has one bedroom on the north side of the house and a living room and large open shower area on the other. The two rooms are separated by a large covered patio that serves as a dining, living and entertainment area. Rather than enclose it with another window wall, Rehwald chose to keep it open, though covered by the wing-roof, as an informal guest area. Across from the main house, over the driveway, peering through trees and sinuous rills of a sloping hillside, several more pieces of the airplane’s fuselage stand. Rehwald plans to build an open-ended art studio out of the pieces. Standing at the guest house, facing the main residence, the view is of the wings, juxtaposed in altitude, one above the other, soaring against the wide expanse of mountain and sky. The Wing House’s shape, defined by the hills over which it stands, follows simplicity and form and is an homage to working with the landscape and, in this case, the skyscape. There’s nothing overtly overwhelming about seeing Rehwald’s home — and yet, it is breathtaking and graceful. Overwhelmed is the only response to seeing the Wing House in full flight. v David Hertz Architects Inc. FAIA S.E.A. Studio of Environmental Architecture 310.829.9932 davidhertzfaia.com

PROFILE

FIVE ACRES AND A DREAM Patina Farm is a labor of love for Brooke and Steve Giannetti. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW INGALLS

I

f Patina Farm and its lucky resident critters could talk, there’d be an awful lot to bark, bleat and squawk about. Fortunately, its mistress, Brooke Giannetti, is a pretty effusive interview subject. Plus, not many houses have an entire book devoted to their process, purpose and potential legacy; but this Ojai retreat does. Interior designer Brooke and her architect husband Steve make a formidable design team. The duo set out to, among other things, create a series of experiences in their Ojai home: “ . . . places for things to happen, emotions to be felt, memories to be made.” I doubt they planned for things to happen during their evacuation from the Thomas Fire, which entailed loading their quartet of super-friendly dogs, trio of pygmy goats and a flock of chickens into the rear of their station wagon — while three miniature donkeys were hustled into a neighbor’s SUV. Thankfully, despite the nearby rage and destruction, the couple’s labor of love still stands. The scorched hills directly in their line of sight attest to recent history. “We have a renewed appreciation for the sanctity of the place. An attitude of gratitude,” Brooke said. Life partners (over 30 years), work partners (together they run design firm Giannetti Home) and parents to three children, these arbiters of style have created stunning homes, far and wide. Designing for themselves and their family provided an exercise in freedom. As the architect noted, he is pretty close to his client, to say the least. }}

TOP: Steve and Brooke Giannetti in the Europeanstyle estate they brought to life in Ojai. ABOVE: Walking down an arched hallway past antique furniture and through a faded wooden door, one has the sense of stepping back into another time. APRIL 2018

AGE BEFORE BEAUTY: Patina Farm resides partly in the shade of a 250-year-old stately oak, standing guard majestically on the hillside.

APRIL 2018

The moment I passed through the gate and entered Patina Farm’s gardens, I felt at peace in the calming environment. This is this couple’s great talent: creating beautiful, elegant yet comfortable safe havens that console. Certainly, the muted color palette — lots of natural linens, beiges and whites – inspired by nature helps. Wanting to create a connection to the outdoors, the interior doesn’t fight for attention as the eye moves to the landscape. The house is solid — limestone, thick plaster walls — but also airy, with many windows and doors opening to the gardens and beyond. Most rooms, from the great room to the master bedroom to the kitchen, take advantage of the views. Even the farmstyle sink has a vista of the gardens and mountains in the distance, as well as of the donkeys happily re-ensconced in the lower portion of the property. Steve is a classically trained architect with Italian roots who appreciates fine craftsmanship. His father was an ornamental plasterer who worked on many historic buildings in Washington, D.C., and beyond. Wanting interplay between “rustic and refined,” the couple mixed natural materials with modern simplicity: galvanized steel, chalky limestone, pale white oak, grayed vintage barn beams, faded antique wooden doors and moss-covered French terra cotta roof tiles. Smooth white plaster walls, no wall/floor moldings, steel doors and glass all add up to a perfectly balanced environment that is elegant without feeling stuffy. Brooke admits to being influenced by Belgian design — the couple traveled there and to Paris for elements and ideas, and found inspiration (along with many wonderful decorative items sourced at French flea markets) along the way. Steve sketched on their travels, while Brooke made use of Instagram. Of great importance when deciding on where to situate their home were two oak trees and sunlight. An H-shaped plan took root with two main courtyards. One takes advantage of the shade from a 250-year-old stately oak. “I purposefully designed this house to be very sculptural,” noted Steve, whose fine abstract seascapes line the walls of his office and the kitchen. “I designed it by feel rather than by the rules.” His intent was to connect modern with Old World style, which he has done harmoniously. There’s even a bell tower that houses a small library, accessed via a very steep and narrow stair. Old leather books wedged in willy-nilly add a touch of whimsy to the house. Other cool concepts include storage incorporated within the thick plaster walls, as well as carved shelves. Scaffolding planks become bookshelves; a metal industrial table was transformed into a vanity in one bathroom. The master bedroom is an oasis of calm, with a master bath that features a free-standing tub flanked by open showerheads abutting a glass wall overlooking an enclosed side garden. The dramatic walk-in closet is actually a room where clothing is hidden behind drapes, rather than sliding doors. A sweet guesthouse on the property welcomes visitors in the same style as the house, with views of a pond created by the Giannettis that is often visited by migrating ducks. Steve is currently designing a 40,000-square-foot home for a client in Tennessee. Other current and past projects for Giannetti Home span the globe from France to Texas and Connecticut to Calistoga — but most projects are in Los Angeles. The couple works at home, in side-by-side offices. They recently opened a Santa Barbara retail shop to showcase their custom furniture line. Brooke is currently working on the couple’s third book. The outdoor rooms they created should provide inspirational writing spots, as this tome will be about Patina Farm’s gardens and animals. And if those beloved animals could talk, I imagine they’d have a lot to say about recent “events” as well as praise for their good life on Patina Farm. “They give us more than we give them,” Brooke concluded, “Being with animals is being in the now. It’s very calming.” For more information, visit www.giannettihome.com. v }}

HOME ON THE GRANGE: The farm is very much an integral part of the house’s design, as evinced by a single-basin sink in the kitchen (top), as well as sheep, chickens and a large garden which yields lots of fresh, ripe produce.

Alexis has come to this secret place in the park to reflect upon her fate as accusations of sexual abuse surface against her. Performances take place Saturdays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m. Tickets: $17. Fisherman’s Wharf, Channel Islands Harbor, 2731 S. Victoria Ave., Oxnard.
