ODE TO SPRING

S

pring has sprung in Ventura County — and what a season it has been! Heading north on the freeway, the hillsides are bright green and yellow with flowering mustard. Southbound, the Dudleya (a native succulent) is blooming on the cliffs of the Conejo Grade. Head for the hills and you’ll be rewarded with a rainbow of hues: purple lupine, bright orange California poppies, yellow goldfields and any number of vibrant blooms I can’t name — but sure enjoy seeing on a weekend hike. We have a good, wet winter to thank for this. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Oxnard has had over 21 inches of rain since October (the start of the “water year”) while Ojai got over 26 inches. The rest of the state got plenty of rain, too, resulting in what’s referred to as a “super bloom” in the California deserts. Locally, we seem to be having one of our own. So we couldn’t resist going wild for wildflowers this month. I think you’ll enjoy the beautiful pictures — almost all taken within the last few weeks — of local trails blooming with life and color. This is the Spring Home and Garden issue, of course, so there’s more inside than just hiking trails and blossoms. We have some beautiful homes and interesting people in the spotlight as well.

APRIL 2017

We feature the colorful Ojai abode of Gay and Katie Hendricks, where the couple’s philosophy of “Conscious Loving” includes not just each other, but Mother Earth as well. Their commitment to ecological sustainability is carried throughout their home and garden, where every year the carbon footprint gets smaller. Darrick and Lana Rasmussen — woodworker and woodblock-print artist, respectively — bring a minimalist, naturally beautiful aesthetic to the handcrafted furniture and art they produce for their company, Killscrow. Working together, this husband and wife duo are attempting to say something new in art and design. Keith Repult wanted a fresh start, and decided that downsizing to a Pierpont beach house was the perfect way to do it. In his new home, every room is designed to capitalize on the ocean views, and invite friends and family to share the moment. Hopefully there will be many opportunities throughout the season for all of us to share the moments with loved ones — or, if you prefer, be in the moment in delicious solitude. It’s going to be a glorious spring no matter how you choose to enjoy it. The time is ripe to stop and smell the flowers. – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

OPEN INTAKE RECEPTION FOUR FRIENDS GALLERY, THOUSAND OAKS

The Four Friends Gallery held its opening reception for the Open Intake photography series on Saturday, March 11. The exhibit featured more than 35 local professional artists, and the opening also served as the premiere event for the gallery’s new role as a center for the arts. In addition to the fine art exhibited on its walls, the gallery hosts live music concerts through Brogden Bay Presents and workshops and classes offered by Gold Coast Theatre Conservatory. Also on tap at Four Friends in the coming months: Salon Series lectures, live theater from Gold Coast Plays, photography workshops and more. “This gallery is a dream and it’s coming true!” said Larry Janss, the gallery’s founder. “Indeed, our artistic community has responded enthusiastically.” For more information and upcoming events, visit www.fourfriendsgallery.com. 1. W

hen Keith Repult and his family decided to leave their 4,000-square-foot house and downsize to a 2,600-square-foot bungalow on Pierpont Beach, they had a vision: to create something organic within the community and embrace simplicity. “In our last home, we built it to impress people. In this home, we wanted to be able to embrace people,” explains Repult, whose former house is a half-mile from the newly built one. “We felt something that blended with the beauty of the beach community would be more accessible and more welcoming.” Repult has been a part of the Pierpont community since 2007. As a successful businessman (he is the owner of Surf ’N’ Yogurt) and craftsman, Repult began his career in carpentry building shelves. Years later he became the co-founder of Native Oak in Ventura, a cabinet making business that opened in April 2016.

WIDE OPEN: Large windows all around provide expansive ocean views from every angle. One set of glass panes in the kitchen fold back completely so that, when fully open, a kitchen counter doubles as a bar for plein air dining.

Repult met his partner in crime, Jay McCoy, through church. Also a successful cabinet maker, McCoy is the president of W.L. Rubottom Company, and he has played a role in the new home’s interior design. “We both had different ideas to bring to the table when building the house,” says McCoy. “I was an expert in cabinet making and Keith is a forward thinker with a ‘get it done’ attitude. This whole project was an opportunity to make friends.” Repult purchased the land (as he jokes, the sand) and began construction in March 2016, taking a year to complete. The outside of the bungalow has a Hawaiian look, as an homage to its beachy environs. But the inside has, according to Repult, more of a farmhouse feel. It sports two and a half levels, four and a half bathrooms, three bedrooms, a kitchen, and indoor and outdoor living areas. The outdoor area has two glass garage doors that open up to the cool ocean air. Repult says he got the idea from the restaurant Social Tap in Ventura. Repult’s wife, Samantha, was also an influence during the design process. After a stay at the Four Seasons Resort on the Big Island, some of the elements that impressed her found their way into the new home. Those details include the ipe wood decking on the outdoor areas, a palm tree motif on the guest bathroom’s wallpaper, a dining room chandelier made of Capiz shells and the master bedroom’s chandelier, which is made out of wooden beads. “My wife has an eye for detail; she sees things I never saw,” says Repult. The lower level has been transformed into a guesthouselike space with a kitchenette, washer and dryer and direct access to the beach. What’s more adorable is the dog tunnel that leads from underneath the staircase to the outside — a special arrangement for his two Maltese pups. “I needed something for them; they matter too,” says Repult. Other furniture or pieces came from Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn. The house is updated with state-of-the-art technology, including remote control or cell phone access to open or shut the blinds or turn on the music that echoes throughout the house, LED lighting, tankless hot water heater and solar panels on the roof. Even the master bathroom has gaslight windows to shut on or off when getting in or out of the bathtub and shower. Repult credits McCoy with influencing him to have the house be more tech-savvy. “Jay has taught me many technical things and new ways of operating in this tech world,” he says. “There were so many aspects as we went along.” Indoors and out, Repult’s home is filled with numerous things to envy: his own private walk-in closet (“After 20 years I finally have my own. I’m ecstatic,” he jokes), the large, wellplanned kitchen, views with surfers in the foreground and the Anacapa Islands in the background. Those views, by the way, can be seen from all angles of the house. But what Repult likes best about his new home is what it represents for him and his family. “This house has a lot of meaning with layers of new beginnings,” says Repult. “I have a grandson coming in June. I have a book about new beginnings coming out this summer and I’m a recovery pastor at Mission Church. We’re going to have a lot of fun days ahead. This is a dream.” v

HAND IN HAND A woodworker and an artist handcraft works of quiet beauty for Killscrow. BY AMELIA FLEETWOOD PORTRAIT BY MARIANA SCHULZE

HOME TEAM: Darrick and Lana Rasmussen share a love for simple, natural, “quiet” design, an aesthetic evinced by the clean lines of their home and décor, which includes Lana’s artwork on the walls and Darrick’s chairs, tables and cabinets (such as a piece specifically designed for vinyl record storage) throughout.

APRIL 2017

Killscrow is an Ojai-based design company, started in 2013, and the name pays homage to Lana’s Native American ancestry: Her mother is full-blooded Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole. Lana didn’t grow up in a “traditional” way, and much of her work stems from her curiosity about her ancestry. Darrick is a furniture maker. Lana is a blockprint fine artist who works with paper and textiles. Although they work in different mediums, the couple rely on their similar aesthetics and mutual support and influence to keep their brand cohesive. Their work can be described as pared-down, highly edited and brought back to the most simplistic forms. There are no frills or extra elements; focus is on the essential. The result is classic and timeless furniture and strikingly powerful artwork. “Darrick uses the word ‘quiet’ a lot when describing what it is when a piece of ours feels successful,” Lana shares. “As the more practical of the two of us, I think the idea of over-designing is my worst fear. We may dance around something a little more decorative at first, but we always come back to keeping it simple.” “The way that I was taught,” shares Darrick, who studied at the College of the Redwoods in Northern California, enrolled in an accelerated learning program for woodworking, “was to let the wood tell you what it needs.” Since college, that eat/sleep/drink woodworking work ethic has enabled Darrick to quickly master his craft. He’s been building furniture for the last five years, and Killscrow offers his pared-down tables, chairs, beds, custom pieces and large shelving units. Darrick explains his aesthetic: “I like my home to be a nice, quiet environment, a space that feels peaceful. Because there is so much going on when you leave the house (and both Lana and I design with that in mind), our designs are simple with no extra flourishes, leaving exactly what you need with nothing added. “For me it is so much about using a ‘quiet’ wood and not a statement piece. I want the wood and the design to coexists harmoniously instead of the design taking center stage or the wood standing

out.” Because of this, Darrick tends to pick wood that has straight grain and a simple look. He avoids the flashier exotic woods not only because of their showiness, but also because of their questionable origins and sustainability. He sticks with species that grow in North America, counting among his favored woods walnut, ash, white oak and, on occasion, cherry. Darrick also brings leather and sometimes even brass into his designs. To start a project, Darrick draws the design on the computer and then commences design talks with the client. “I am comfortable with most aspects of the design, but there are always those times when I need to build a mock-up to see how it will work,” he says. “I use cheap wood to create a rough draft of the project before I commit to using the real wood. A mock-up is a great tool to help me see what the completed project will look like.” Darrick relies on hybrid woodworking, using a combination of machines and power tools for the things they do best, like the rough work (to save time), while keeping the more detailed work for his hand tools, employing traditional methods. Using each other as a sounding board, Lana and Darrick play off each other’s opinion as their work develops. These days Lana is working on a series of small drawings that pay homage to Ojai’s citrus fruits. “I think of myself as a craftsperson rather than an artist,” Lana says. She carves the blocks she uses for printing by hand and is very focused on the tactile feel of the paper she uses. “I really like working on new things because I love learning,” Darrick smiles. “There are days I feel like a furniture maker and other days I just feel like a woodworker.” When their retail space opens in Ojai in April, it will be the first time that Lana and Darrick’s work will be displayed together. In partnership, this talented couple are creating innovative and exciting work, breaking new ground in design, function and beauty. v

PROFILE

“Killscrow is a tribe-related word. Darrick and I loved the name and felt connected to it,” says Lana Fee Rasmussen, explaining the title of the company she runs with her husband, Darrick.

THE ART OF LIVING

Creativity and sustainability come together in the eclectic, eco-conscious home of Gay and Katie Hendricks. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTORAPHY BY MICHAEL MOORE

I

arrived a bit early at the welcoming Ojai home of Gay and Katie Hendricks and couldn’t help but plop onto the wooden swing hanging from a tree in the spacious, magical front garden. After all, the birds were singing and they seemed to be tweeting, “Welcome! Breathe! It’s almost spring!” The garden (like the couple’s home, I soon discovered) was filled with a colorful array of objects collected on travels, as well as from local sources: amethyst geodes, benches tiled with pink lotus designs and, sparkling amidst succulents, a cactus sculpture and a bright blue orb. I rang the bell of the white and green farm-style house and Katie invited me inside the abode, which also doubles as a home office and writing studio. Colorful paintings, art (by Roy James, Poteet Victory, John Lennon and Marc Chagall) and one-of-a-kind furniture and light fixtures, many from Primavera in Ojai, decorate their home. Close to 40 books that the Hendrickses have written (including Gay’s Tenzing Norbu mysteries) have been translated into a multitude of languages, and these line the shelves in Gay’s writing room. Cats Alli and Greta have their own amazing climbing wall in the exercise room. Gay and Katie are all about “Conscious Loving” and they live what they preach, in more ways than one. That’s the title of the couple’s New York Times best-selling book, which was also featured on Oprah’s book club. That’s also how The Hendricks Institute and its Foundation for Conscious Living markets seminars and training workshops. This concept is displayed in the Hendrickses’ Ojai home, where they spread their love not only to the humans and animals in their midst, but to Mother Earth as well. It comes as no surprise that they are walking the walk with their ecological commitment. Katie, seated on her lavender chaise, chatted about all sorts of matters: human, spiritual and domestic. She told me they removed the original front lawn and converted the front garden into a “bee, butterfly and hummingbird pollinator” where }} hawks regularly visit to bathe in the fountain.

IN LIVING COLOR: The Hendrickses’ living room is filled with eclectic art and artifacts collected on the couple’s many travels, as well as customdesigned furniture and lighting. Together they create warm and inviting but also interesting and vibrant spaces that are as beautiful to look at as live in.

Every year, the couple aims to take on a project to lessen their ecological footprint. “Our body intelligence work informs our lifestyle,” noted Katie. “One can’t be aware of their body if not conscious of the bigger body. We want to be consistent with our principles.” Currently, they’re in the process of making changes in the back garden with a state-ofthe-art pool system, a lovely Balinese pavilion sanctuary and a brightly painted swing from Rajasthan in India. Previous endeavors have yielded a gray-water system (sourced from the master bathroom of the 2,500-square-foot house ) that waters a side yard, an on-demand hot water system that takes one minute to heat and energy-efficient appliances that keep bills and usage down. But some of their most ambitious efforts have involved solar energy. The house employs solar panels, which the Hendrickses say supply 60 percent of the residence’s energy. They have also installed a backup system using clean, nontoxic batteries that are designed and manufactured in Ojai by a company called SimpliPhi Power. In fact, the couple was an angel investor in the technology in the company’s early days. The need for backup power became paramount when a humongous 350-year-old oak tree lost two “branches the size of trees” that fell on a transformer and left them without power for a few days. Katie and Gay wanted a backup power source for their solar panels. The solution turned out to be SimpliPhi. The company got its start, in a way, in 2001, when a man named Stuart Lennox, who worked as a production designer for film and TV, invented an off-grid energy storage system for remote applications (such as film sets). Catherine Von Burg, SimpliPhi’s president and CEO, teamed up with Lennox in 2010 to leverage his proprietary Libertypak platform technology for use in a wide range of business and consumer products. I asked Von Burg, also an Ojai resident, to explain how the reliable, clean-home energy source works. As we all know, power is intermittent. Additionally, there are peak usage hours, when we pay more to use our dryers or other electrical appliances. Let’s say you lose power and can’t operate your computer, refrigerator or lights. A backup power source would be handy

indeed — and preferably not a noisy, polluting diesel gas generator that requires maintenance. SimpliPhi batteries can be installed in a home or business to power up when a power grid outage occurs. These batteries offer the smallest energy footprint and least amount of weight. They can be placed under counters or in a garage, and they don’t require any ventilation or cooling apparatus. SimpliPhi works with contractors, architects and electricians to design a system that suits each customer’s requirements. Although the company has created backup power sources locally for the Hendrickses, as well as at Taft Botanical Gardens and The Ojai Foundation, much of SimpliPhi’s work is global, spanning from Europe to South America to New Zealand, and includes projects ranging from a 10,000-square-foot home in New York to a brewing company in Maui. According to Von Burg, these batteries, when used with generators, can reduce fuel consumption by 50 to 90 percent. Additionally, unlike cobalt oxide batteries, there is no risk of “thermal runaway,” toxic fires or temperature regulation. SimpliPhi prides itself on employing the most environmentally friendly lithium ion chemistry in its products. “Batteries stand to optimize any power generation source,” Von Burg said, “whether it’s solar, wind, generators or your own electrical power grid. The nontoxic batteries have a 10-year warranty, but will last for 15 years or more.” The batteries create a cushion for power outages, as well as during peak charge times. For businesses, a system can pay for itself within a year. SimpliPhi works with a local recycler when disposal is (finally) necessary. But back to the home front, where the Hendrickses now possess peace of mind in the event of a power outage. “We love Ojai,” Katie concluded, “It’s really about supporting the life we have here and being as responsible as we can. We’ve made a big commitment to living in integrity.” v For more information on the Hendricks Institute, visit www.hendricks.com or foundationforconsciousliving.com. FLOWER POWER: A brilliant patch of California golden poppies brightens a hillside in Arroyo Verde Park, Ventura.

Ventura County in

BLOOM

A rainy winter means a spectacular year for wildflowers throughout Ventura County.

I

t finally happened: Our dry county actually got some rain this year. Great news for parched water tables, of course. And even better for local wildflower populations. Wildflower enthusiasts know that when it’s good here, it’s great. “California is a biodiversity hotspot,” says biologist David Brown, a volunteer with the California Native Plant Society and naturalist for the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District. “We have more endemic species and varieties of plants than anywhere on the continent. And Ventura County is special within California because there are so many different environments: coastal, semi-desert, grassland, forest. We have thousands of unique species.” Many of which will put on a colorful show for hikers this spring and summer. Ventana Monthly spoke with wildflower enthusiasts across the county to find some of the best places to take in the local “super bloom.”

CAMARILLO Camarillo Grove Park 805.482.1996, www.pvrpd.org This park at the base of the Conejo Grade boasts a nature center, 2 miles of recently opened trails (more will open in June) and a series of interpretive gardens — making it a prime spot for fun in the sun with fabulous flowers, too. Giant coreopsis, with its big, yellow, sunflower-like blossoms are particularly impressive here, but you’ll also find Indian paintbrush, orange bush monkey flowers, California fuschia and a variety of cacti and succulents. “I can’t say enough about how beautiful it is out here right now,” says Amy Stewart, recreation services manager for the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District. Carol Haverty, a garden guide, is also excited about the resurgent plants that might appear in areas affected by the Camarillo Springs Fire. “There’s stuff coming up that we }}

haven’t seen for 10 or 20 years,” she says. “It’s the kind of thing that gives you hope. How powerful nature is, how it extends itself.” OJAI Ojai Valley Land Conservancy Preserves 805.649.6852, ovlc.org Every spring, the open spaces preserved by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy come alive with the bright orange of California poppies, pretty purple blue dicks and lupine, scarlet buglers and sunny yellow buttercups and goldfields. But this year has been particularly prolific. “This is the first time we have seen blooms like this on the Valley View Preserve since we acquired it and built the new trails in 2013,” says Tania Parker, OVLC’s director of advancement. Meadows have been particularly rich as well. “Because of the restoration work we have done on the Ojai Meadows Preserve, wildflowers are abundant every year.” Species include tidy-tips, baby blue eyes, owl’s clover and Clarkia. Keep an eye out for red maids and fiddleneck flowers later in the season. Parker also recommends the Ventura River Preserve: “Fields of owl’s clover in April and May, and a huge variety of flowers as you hike through the different ecosystems of Rice and Wills Canyons.” SIMI VALLEY Chumash and Mount McCoy Trails 805.584.4400, rsrpd.org Better-known for its dramatic sandstone rock formations, the Chumash Trail in springtime becomes a paradise for fans of the mariposa lily, with white Catalina and butterfly, pink Plummer’s and yellow varieties all presenting. “Over a month and a half, you’ll be entertained by all four lilies,” notes Michael Kuhn, executive chair of the Rancho Simi Trail Blazers, a volunteer organization that develops and maintains hiking trails in the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District. In May and June, look for the particularly impressive yellow and red Humboldt lilies. Kuhn also likes the Mount McCoy Trail, which gives a lot of bang for its buck: Over its 1.3-mile length, sharp eyes should be able to spot blue skullcaps, field mustard, chocolate lilies, coast goldfields and, if you’re particularly lucky, the white flowering fritillary. “The best area is up on top of the hill, in the Mount McCoy highlands,” Kuhn adds.

THOUSAND OAKS Conejo Canyons Trail System 805.381.2741, conejo-openspace.org Part of the Conejo Open Space Conservancy, the Conejo Canyons promise miles of wildflower viewing. “Blue dicks are everywhere on the Western Plateau,” says Nick Ferrari, a ranger with the conservancy. “But you’re going to see quite a few other flowers, too.” Goldfield, morning glories, poppies, wishbone, owl’s clover, lupine, shooting stars and peonies all emerge throughout the trail system. “Elliott Peak is where we’ve seen the most wildflowers,” Ferrari notes, but cautions that hikers should watch out for ticks. VENTURA Arroyo Verde Park and the Ventura Botanical Gardens 805.652.4550, cityofventura.net/parks 805.232.3113, venturabotanicalgardens.com There’s no need to leave the city limits to find beautiful blossoms in Ventura. On the trails surrounding Arroyo Verde Park, at the intersection of Foothill and Day Roads, you’ll see something new at every turn: corridors of yellow flowering mustard, hillsides covered in blue phacelia, clusters of bright purple lupine or creamy-white morning glories, even a patch of California poppies so dense and bright you can see it across the park. At the picturesque Ventura Botanical Gardens just behind City Hall downtown, a winding path leads through Chilean, South African and California native gardens with a variety of cacti, succulents and native plants in every color. Keep an eye out for the California bluebell, or Phacelia campanularia, with its breathtaking, deep-blue petals. AN EVER-CHANGING COMMUNITY Wildflowers don’t bloom all at once, or last all season, but there should be plenty of florescence from April through June. “The good thing about living in Ventura County is that it goes from sea level to 7,000 feet,” says Lanny Kaufer, who runs regular herb walks and nature hikes (www.HerbWalks. com) throughout Southern California. “Plant communities at higher elevation will bloom later in the season than those lower down.” Kuhn agrees, adding, “Things can change radically from one week to the next. That’s one of the great joys of hiking.” v
