The Mindful Momma

Birth As It Should Be: Empowerment Over Intervention

Another mother’s birth story one of violation, not empowerment. She consented to a cervical check, only to have her waters broken without permission. Fear tactics followed, pressuring her into Pitocin. She left with a broken tailbone, a deep tear, and emotional scars.

I wish this was an uncommon narrative, but unfortunately it is not. Mothers and families are having very similar experiences literally every single day.

This is why I do this work. The system treats birth as a medical procedure, not a sacred rite. It prioritizes convenience over consent, profit over wellness. But birth belongs to families, not institutions. Every mother deserves an intentional, empowered experience one that honors her body, her baby, and the profound transformation of birth. Birth is yours.

Advocacy is the best tool you can have in these moments, whether it be selfadvocacy, your partner or whoever is present to support you It is your right to give consent or decline interventions at your discretion.

Remind the hospital staff of your intention to exercise that right: “Please do not provide any interventions without my explicit consent.”

If you need help navigating to own your experience, resources exist to support you in reclaiming your birth experience. A doula or midwife can provide guidance and advocacy, ensuring your voice is heard and your choices are respected. For those seeking a more family centered experience, home birth or birth centers offer an alternative to the hospital system Your birth should be a reflection of your choices, not dictated by convenience or profit-driven policies

Support is available — your body, your baby, your birth, your way.

Top 5 Warning Signs of Child Abuse

It wasn’t the belt that scared her, but the hand that wielded it.

In honor of National Child Abuse Awareness Month, we asked for personal experiences to delve into this often taboo subject

Local college student Tiffany B escaped an abusive home at age 12 with the help of a keen-eyed librarian.

"I didn’t know it wasn’t normal to be hungry and left alone at public places for long stretches of time,” she said, tugging at her long bangs over a cup of hot coffee. “My silence, my bruises, my fear. It was all there, but it took someone paying attention to help me break free "

It was a slow process that initially put Tiffany on edge She took great pains to hide any signs that something wasn’t right.

The librarian “noticed I was always hungry, washed up in the bathroom and tried to make my clothes look different, even though they were the same from the day before,” said Tiffany, who currently lives on her own with the guidance and support of her foster family. “She was gentle. I knew she was watching me, but in a good way. Safe. I felt seen.”

After the librarian reported the suspected abuse, Tiffany was removed from her aunt’s home and placed in foster care. Resources, including therapy and a secure, loving home with people who became her family, set a path to healing and growth

“That small act of kindness saved my life," Tiffany said.

If you suspect abuse, report concerns to Child Protective Services or the police.

Here are five key signs of child abuse to look out for:

Unexplained Injuries

Bruises, burns, fractures, or cuts with unclear or inconsistent explanations, especially in various stages of healing.

Extreme Behavior Changes

Sudden aggression, withdrawal, anxiety, or fearfulness, especially around certain people or situations.

Poor Hygiene & Neglect

Dirty clothes, frequent hunger, untreated medical issues, or being left unsupervised for long periods.

Inappropriate Sexual Knowledge or Behavior

Awareness of sexual topics beyond their age, sudden fear of a specific person, or difficulty walking or sitting.

Frequent School Absences

Missing school regularly, arriving unprepared, or showing signs of exhaustion or distress when returning from home

KEVIN ROSS MMA Featuring advice for kids interested in MMA and Muay Thai

Kevin “The Soul Assassin” Ross is a world-renowned Muay Thai fighter and instructor from Las Vegas with 75 fights and 20 years of training and fighting under his belt

Some would choose to spend their late 20’s partying or relaxing Not Ross “A lot goes into it. I stayed ready all the time I was constantly getting ready for fights, having a fight and going into training. It’s a lifestyle. Training all day every day, staying health, in shape”

He always loved fighting, watching VHS tapes of Muay Thai fights from the 1990s, and looking up to Bruce Lee among others However, he wasn’t a violent or even outgoing person growing up, nor did he train to fight in his youth

“I wasn’t someone who you would think would fight I had a misconception that you had to be a certain way to be a fighter … and I didn’t start training until I was 23”

He started training under Muay Thai instructors from Thailand at one of the best gyms in Las Vegas For years, he contributed to developing the sport in America, trying his best to entertain spectators and bring his best to the match He entered the Muay Thai circuit when it wasn’t a very popular sport in this country, nor were American fighters taken seriously as a result

He is motivated by being the positive role model he never had growing up Though he has retired from fighting, he continues to teach and mentor others And, he’s well read! His favorite books are “Unbroken,” “The Rise of Superman,” and “Man’s Search for Meaning,” among others that he posts reviews of on his social media.

When Kevin was 33 years old, he fought Tetsuya Yamato in Las Vegas It was one of his most memorable fights, which took place in the heat of the summer on Fremont Street

You can check out his fights on YouTube under Kevin “The Soul Assassin” Ross. His nickname was given to him after a fight by a local spectator Ross has traveled all over the world to pursue his dreams of Muay Thai fighting

“My two favorite places to fight Mexico and Thailand Because fighting is such a big part of their culture, they really appreciate the fighter, regardless if its someone they like or not and, like baseball or football in America, you can talk to anyone pretty much about it”

To kids who may be interested in MMA or Muay Thai:

“I think a big thing to remember is that fighting, just like life, is a journey, not a destination

“You must put everything you have into it every day, keep moving forward. … You’re going to have wins, losses, good days, bad days. Keep moving forward and use those difficult times to get better, to get stronger.

“I wasn’t someone who you would think would fight. … I had a misconception that you had to be a certain way to be a fighter”

A Homeschool Co-Op Focused on Inclusivity and Community

When the search for a diverse and inclusive homeschool co-op led to dead ends, one mother took matters into her own hands In August 2022, Colorful Geniuses Homeschool Co-Operative held its first meeting at a local library, offering a unique approach to homeschooling.

"I wanted a co-op that provided a variety of extracurricular classes for my children, but I couldn't find the right fit," the founder explains "After talking with other moms, I decided to take the leap and start one myself"

The name, Colorful Geniuses, emerged from a brainstorming session with friends. “I made a list of options, and this one was the popular vote,” she shares The name reflects the group’s mission embracing diversity, creativity, and community

Unlike traditional homeschool co-ops that focus on core subjects, Colorful Geniuses is dedicated solely to extracurricular activities “We prioritize inclusivity, welcoming families from diverse ethnic, religious, and educational backgrounds. We also provide a safe space for children on the autism spectrum,” the founder explains

New homeschool families receive essential support through regular meetings, field trips, and community events “It’s about more than just education; we focus on building friendships and creating lasting memories,” she says

The co-op offers a rotating selection of classes, including Black and African History, Origami, STEM, Yoga, Financial Literacy, and Life Skills “Parents play a vital role in shaping our curriculum. We send surveys for parents to suggest or teach classes, ensuring our sessions reflect the group’s interests,” the founder adds

Challenges, such as securing a meeting space and setting fees, were early hurdles “Finding a free weekly space was difficult, but Centennial Hills Library has been incredibly supportive,” she says Balancing affordability with sustainability was another concern, but she believes they’ve found a “sweet spot.”

Looking ahead, the vision remains clear: “We want to continue providing an engaging, community-driven experience while maintaining our commitment to quality over quantity”

It Takes a Village

Build It with BaseCampEd!

BaseCampEd is a new app designed to help parents build the community they need whether they homeschool, are considering homeschooling, or want to connect through extracurricular activities

Founder Morgan Bergstrom created BaseCampEd after experiencing firsthand how difficult it can be to find support. “Our boys are wild, energetic, and curious,” she says. “When we moved far from family, we knew we had to build our own community. But we saw how isolating that can feel for many families. That’s why we created BaseCampEd to make it easier for parents to find their people ”

BaseCampEd allows parents to form groups based on shared interests, location, and needs. Teachers and coaches can also create profiles and list their credentials, helping families find educators who align with their children's interests.

Beyond connection, organization is key. The app features a calendar tool for scheduling events and managing activities “Parents juggle so much,” says Bergstrom “Our goal is to simplify that process, so families can focus on what really matters ” Users can create public groups for nationwide networking or private groups for local co-ops and meetups.

Safety is a top priority. BaseCampEd does not track locations but uses zip codes for general connections. Children’s names, photos, and birthdays are not shared, and messaging is only available between approved connections “We are committed to creating a safe and welcoming space,” Bergstrom emphasizes

With its mission to empower families, BaseCampEd is ready to help parents build strong, supportive communities. “It takes a village,” Bergstrom says. “Let’s build it together!”

Co-founded in 2013 by Kim MacQuarrie and Ciara Byrne, Green Our Planet now operates in 1,200 schools across 43 states, inspiring the next generation of scientists, entrepreneurs, and environmentalists

“We just wanted to help teachers build gardens,” says CEO Ciara Byrne “It was a side project until we realized how much impact we were having. Teachers kept saying, ‘We need this.’ So we turned it into a nonprofit.”

Their student-run farmer’s market selling produce and crafts based o plans they’ve created Added toge markets would come to be a total o students from 100 schools, with o at the Spring Giant Student Farme Downtown Summerlin, over 30 sch Student Farmers Markets in Down and over 20 schools at the Northe Student Farmers Market in Carson not just growing food we’re grow CEOs,” Byrne said

With 300,000 food-insecure people in Clark County, the nonprofit is also on a mission to teach locals to grow their own food They recently acquired a long-abandoned dental office at 1433 Las Vegas Blvd to become a hydroponics hub but they need community support “We’re fundraising for renovations and could really use in-kind donations furniture, vacuums, time from electricians and plumbers. Every little bit helps,” says Byrne.

Looking ahead, Green Our Planet sees urban hydroponics as the future of food “It’s like solar 15 years ago It saves water, uses less space, and grows food fast We’re using our expertise to help communities fall in love with the planet and that’s something to be proud of.”

VIVA LAS GREEN VEGAS

Sustainability Takes the Stage!

Think Las Vegas is all glitz, glamour, and glittering neon? You're not wrong but this desert city is also rolling the dice on green, proving that even in a land of showgirls and slot machines, sustainability is more than just a buzzword.

RAISING MILLIONAIRES

April is financial awareness month. Local real estate pro Dave Reichert talks to area high school kids about how to get started early building wealth. He shares his tips so you can join the coveted “Two-Comma Club,” also known as the Millionaire’s Club!

The example that I'm going to use is a summer job that you have for three months that pays you $1,000 a month and take-home pay This is where it gets interesting: If you can, train yourself to live off of just $300 a month and then invest the $700 that remains into an individual retirement account If you are 18 or older, you can have your own individual retirement account However, if you are under the age of 18, you can have your parent open what is called a custodial individual retirement account (IRA) I'm going to ask you to do this for six years

Remember, only three months out of the year for six years putting $700 a month away. And then, depending on how old you are when you stop (for example, age 22 or 23), you do not have to put another single dollar in the account. You also must have the discipline to leave that money alone! If you do this and the account averages 8% interest over that timeframe, when you are 65 years old and don't feel like you want to work anymore, you will have $1,073,662 00 in that account Welcome to the Two-Comma Club!

What makes this so simple is also what makes it difficult.

It's based on you embracing a concept called delayed gratification So, instead of buying that video-game mod, you'll just have to play with the base model knowing that when you are older, you are going to be set! For a great example of what delayed gratification looks like, check out this video on YouTube where kids are tested with waiting to eat a marshmallow in order to get rewarded Be the two-marshmallow kid!

FEAR AND FINANCES

WHYMOREKIDSARECHOOSING RIDESHARESOVERDRIVING

When Fontina Rogers turned 16, she dreamed of the car in the driveway with a big bow. Her son, who turns 16 this summer, is dreaming about an Uber gift card.

“He has no intentions of driving,” Rogers, a mom of two teens under 16, said “Neither of my kids are super excited to drive Get their driver’s license, yes But get behind the wheel, big no”

Many teenagers have shifted away from the once-coveted milestone of getting a driver’s license and owning a car Instead, they increasingly rely on ride-share services like Uber and Lyft for transportation This shift is driven by convenience, cost-effectiveness, and a reduced sense of urgency to drive

When Rideshare Might Be Cheaper:

You drive infrequently (less than 30–40 miles/week)

“I think I spoiled them,” said Carla Abroyo, mom of 17-year-old Sophia and 20-year-old Kiley “I drove them everywhere, so they never had that yearning to get somewhere on their own”

“Wedon’thavecarpayments,insurance,gas,and maintenance,”Abroyosaid

You don’t need to commute daily

You live in a city with high parking/insurance costs

You don't want to deal with maintenance or vehicle depreciation costs

When Owning a Car Makes More Sense:

You commute daily or long distances

You frequently run errands or drive kids/family around

You live in a suburban or rural area with limited rideshare availability

You need flexible transportation at any hour

THE EGG-CITING LIFE OF RAISING CHICKENS

Many are talking about it, only a few actually do it. Raising chickens in Las Vegas has been a hot topic since the price of eggs topped $6 a dozen or more. But is it a good idea?

I turned to local egg-fluencer

Jeanalin Rehm, the brains behind Crazy Farm Girl Era and a local Realtor, to give us the dirt on all things chicken.

“Raising chickens is a mix of eggstraordinary joy and eggsasperating chaos,” said Rehm, a mom of two teenage boys who runs a mini farm in the middle of town. “On the bright side, you get free eggs (not really because they are expensive to raise), endless entertainment from their ridiculous antics, and a steady supply of high-quality fertilizer (whether you want it or not) ”

But then there's the downside.

“Roosters are tiny, feathered jerks, eggs end up in the weirdest places, predators constantly eye your flock like it's a fast-food drive-thru, and `chicken math’ ensures you always have more birds than you planned,” she said. “And the poop oh, the poop. My backyard is a neverending cleanup mission! But, despite the mess, noise, and occasional chicken drama, it’s all worth it.”

While the idea of homesteading had been on her vision board since 2018, she hadn’t taken any steps to make it a reality

“I have lupus, so I went down a rabbit hole on homesteading to help cure my inflammation,” she said. “My husband finally got me 4 chickens for our anniversary in 2022 because he forgot to buy me a gift. Best forgotten present ever!”

What It Really Costs to Keep Chickens

The lowdown on raising chickens by the #s from Jeanalin Rehm:

My initial setup was ... regrettable. I’m upgrading to a custom coop and run ($1,200).

Metal Storage Shed Coop – $550 (horrible for Vegas heat)

Run (Metal Frame & Hardware Cloth) –$500 (too short to stand in big mistake)

Feed per month – $252 08 for organic allflock feed and scratch, $50 for 10 pounds of mealworms which gives the ladies egg-stra protein and $20 for herbs to add to their feed like red pepper flakes, garlic, oregano, parsley and add apple cider vinegar to their water and table scraps.

Medications – $150/year for basics like Vet RX and sprays

Chicken Math is Real

Here’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned: If you get chickens, expect a cow and a pony to follow. I started with four hens, then fell in love with different breeds, egg colors, and fluffy poofyhaired Polish chickens Before I knew it, I was researching peacocks and turkeys I’m now zoned for 20 chickens including three roosters

Time Commitment

My family and I spend about 30 minutes to an hour daily feeding, watering, and poop duty. Once a week, we deep clean, which takes anywhere from two to four hours.

The Truth About Backyard Chickens

Does it save money? Nope! It’s an expensive, yet fulfilling hobby. Eggs at Trader Joe’s cost $4.99–$12.99 per dozen. I sell mine for $8/dozen, but getting fully licensed costs a small fortune.

The Weird Things Chickens Do

Chickens are basically feathered weirdos. They take daily dirt baths (to stay clean, ironically), form cliques like high schoolers, and yes, sometimes eat their own eggs. Chicken-abalism is a thing!

Final Advice for New Chicken Owners

If you don’t mind a backyard soap opera, surprise livestock additions, and never having a spotless yard again go for it! Chicken math is real, and your life will never be the same. But, trust me, it’s worth every peck, cluck, and surprise egg in your shoe!

ABCs of E-bikes

Eco-friendly and efficient, electric bikes, or e-bikes, have surged in popularity But, understanding proper usage and safety measures is crucial

"When you ride your e-bike on streets and roads, you're a vehicle in the eyes of the law,” said Officer Richard Brant of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

“But just like a bike, cars may not see you, so you need to be aware of your surroundings”

But, families find them fun, and there are benefits

“Some of the best points of owning an e-bike versus a car is essentially you don’t have the overhead of gas expenses, and you don’t have the overhead of insurance expenses,” Jesse Newman, local Pedego store manager, said

Riders are able to travel longer distances more efficiently with the assistance of the motor

“Helmetsafetyissomethingthatisalwaysamust,” Newmansaid,notingvisibilityisapriority “Wehaveallofthe functionalityforothervehiclesandotherriderstoseeyou”

All of their bikes come equipped with headlights and taillights and some with turn signals.

“Visibility is ... for safety, but you also want to respect other riders and other vehicles on the road and let them know what you’re doing,” Newman said “A lot of our bikes are integrated to feel like a normal bike with all of the benefits of an electric motor”

E-bikes have two settings: throttle and pedal assist Throttle assist works just like a normal throttle on a motorcycle, so you don’t have to pedal Pedal assist is has five different levels with a minimum and maximum output While you’re pedaling, the motor assists you

“It’s not taking full control of the motor, which is really nice, because that is what they are designed to do, is to be ridden like a bike,” Newman said “With any e-bike purchase, you want to have local support We want to make sure all of our riders are safely on the road, and they can stay riding for as long as possible”

Fostering a Bond Destined to Help & Heal

For many veterans returning from active duty, the challenges of reintegrating into civilian life can be daunting Some face mobility issues, while others grapple with the invisible wounds of war, such as anxiety, PTSD, and depression Silver State Service Dogs train pets to do much more than fetch. They meet the unique needs of vets and can help mitigate these challenges.

“Service dogs change people’s lives in a number of ways and it’s personal for each vet,” said Dr. Diane Villa, founder, director and president of SSSD. “I have a vet with mobility and anxiety needs that help him pick up things, provides balance, and bracing where the dog can stand still so the veterans can stand up or sit down.”

The day-to-day tasks are vital, but it’s the nights that can be brutal for veterans.

“We have dogs trained to do nightmare interruptions,” she said. “They can sense them when they start, wake them up before they get really bad with licking or pawing ”

Building Connections and Community

One of the unique aspects of Silver State Service Dogs is its commitment to building a sense of community among its recipients. Veterans and civilians who receive service dogs often form lifelong bonds with other dog handlers, creating a network of support and shared experience. SSSD partners with local businesses, healthcare providers, and nonprofit groups to raise awareness and advocate for service dog accessibility

Service Dogs for Mental Health

The healing power of service dogs goes beyond physical tasks they play a significant role in improving mental health. For many veterans and civilians dealing with trauma or long-term health conditions, the companionship of a service dog can be life-changing Studies have shown that service dogs can reduce symptoms of PTSD, alleviate depression, and lower stress levels This emotional support helps individuals feel more grounded and better equipped to face daily challenges.

A Lifelong Partnership

What makes Silver State Service Dogs truly special is their dedication to training service animals and creating lifelong partnerships between the dogs and their handlers. Once paired, the organization provides ongoing training and support to ensure that the relationship continues to meet the evolving needs of the handler so that both the dog and the individual can adapt to changes over time, making the partnership as beneficial as possible for the long term.

How to Get Involved

Silver State Service Dogs relies on the support of volunteers and donations to continue their lifechanging work. Community members can get involved in various ways, whether by volunteering at the organization, fostering puppies, or donating to help cover the costs of training and pairing service dogs with those in need. Additionally, local businesses can partner with Silver State to provide further support, offering discounts and services to veterans and individuals with disabilities Want to change a life? Silver State Service Dogs work closely with veterans, matching them with dogs trained to perform tasks that directly assist with their physical or mental health needs.

The Art of Tea

Steeped in History and Culture, Tea Ceremonies are Trending

Tea in America is often seen as blends, boba, or a health trend, but at Tea and Whisk, the experience is deeper.

“It is meant to be savored, in its complexity and simplicity,” said founder Leo Ludiki, who has spent nearly two decades studying tea

For nearly a decade, Tea and Whisk has been more than just a tea shop it’s a place where people discover the depth, history, and beauty of tea

Ludiki didn’t start out to be a tea expert

“I thought I knew enough to open a tea shop, but I didn’t,” he admits.

Originally selling housewares, he placed a small selection of tea by the checkout But, as he learned more, he fell deeply in love with tea’s complexity and tradition By 2018, he had fully dedicated himself to sharing tea culture.

“Tea has been enjoyed in its pure form for thousands of years,” Leo explains More visitors now seek high-quality, loose-leaf tea, brewed the way it’s meant to be just hot water and leaves, no sugar, no milk.

For those intimidated by tea, Leo offers guidance: "Take a class, explore different teas, and trust the process." Tea is more than a drink — it’s a moment of peace, a connection to history, and an invitation to slow down and savor life.

Reasons to Ride the Rails

If life feels like it's been stuck on fast-forward, it might be time to hit pause and ride the rails. There’s something wonderfully old-school about trading in the hustle of highways and airports for the gentle clickety-clack of a train

1) You don’t need to steer, sprint, or stress just sit back, snack up, and soak in the scenery.

2) Kids love the excitement of being on a train watching the world pass by, exploring the train cars, and even enjoying themed rides.

3) Parents appreciate the ease: no traffic, no need to constantly repack or navigate, and plenty of time to truly unwind while making lasting memories.

4) Unlike road trips or air travel, train vacations offer room to roam. Families can sit together, play games, grab a snack in the café car, or simply look out the window at the changing landscape.

5) Many scenic train routes include commentary, wildlife spotting, and stops in historic towns turning the journey into an educational experience, too. A travel agent can help you find just the right train trip to fit your mini conductorsin-training’s needs or wildlife enthusiasts' bucket list. My Travel Scout has helped locals find incredible deals for memory-making vacations.
