By: Dawn Starr Looking Elk

Frankie Robles

Horror Pop Illustrator and Tattoo Artist Dawn Starr met Frankie at Skin Factory Tattoo where they discussed how cannabis has affected his life and art... DS: At what age did you discover your aptitude for art? Frankie: At 3 years old, I began drawing dinosaurs and my favorite comic book character: Batman. Also, being dyslexic at a young age, I found I could draw at weird angles, upside down and backwards. Although I struggled in school, teachers would say that even though I didn't finish my work I was a talented artist, because I drew on everything all the time. DS: How would you describe your art style? Frankie: My art style is a mix of cartoon characters and horror-esque like things. I paint creatures with great expressions that tell a story without words.

DS: Why did you start using cannabis? Frankie: So at first it was kind of an intimate thing. It helped me relax and to create ideas on art and furthering concepts on certain characters. It would increase my openness to new styles. I was about 20 years old when I found out the medicinal effects of how it helped me mentally and physically. DS: What and how do you prefer to medicate? Frankie: I prefer to medicate with flower, and to vape it. I like Indica dominant strains, as I have anxiety, so it helps me mellow my mood more than a sativa. I like the 2 to 1 ratio stuff, where it's more CBD than THC for daytime use. DS: Besides tattooing and drawing, do you engage in other creative activities? Frankie: Yes, I like to engage in Shaolin Kung Fu, to help keep my body limber. I like cosplay culture; dressing up and going to cons, and having a good time. I also enjoy special effects makeup, doing makeup like the Joker, cuts and bruises, and monsters and stuff. DS: Where can our readers find you and your art? Frankie: You can find me at Skin Factory Tattoos on Sunset between Eastern and Pecos (Tuesday's through Saturday's), and also on Instagram @ Frankietattoos147.
