Message
from the
DEAN
As a new dean entering a well established dental school with a history of educational excellence, my thoughts turn to the future. Modern-day challenges include access to care, evolving technology, and sustainability of the excellent education we’ve been providing for 129 years.
Maintaining our continuity of excellence includes improving our infrastructure, ensuring an inclusive environment, and recruiting students, faculty and staff who reflect our diverse audiences.
Just as critical is expanding access to our services in rural and urban areas. All in a financially responsible manner. These challenges are opportunities to guide us as we approach the future with optimism, strength, and confidence.
Dental education is evolving. A clear example is its increasing cost. Effectively addressing this burden requires consideration of all aspects of the school. We have a remarkable clinical enterprise. We are financially responsible. But, we must also consider – and be thankful for – the power of philanthropy.
The power of student scholarships cannot be understated. This power becomes even more significant as the growing number of dental schools compete for a static number of applicants. This is especially true when recruiting talented applicants from underrepresented communities who must be part of our student and patient experience.
Rising student debt is a harsh reality. While we are committed to assuring and envisioning new efficiencies, the need for scholarships has never been more important or impactful. To sustain our educational excellence requires recruitment and retention of outstanding, diverse, and committed students. Your generous gifts are critical to these efforts.
In this issue of Dentistry magazine, you’ll learn how alumni and friends like you graciously came forward to help reduce student debt through scholarships. Featured are 12 examples of sustainable philanthropy and messages of gratitude. On the school's Reflections website (dentistry.vcu.edu/alumni), you can read about more scholarships, professorships, and special endowments. All created to express thanks, give a tribute, or pay it forward. No matter the reason, all of these gifts help students for years to come.
Alumni have the power to influence the future of dental education, the dental profession, and oral health care in our communities. Thank you for your ongoing support. Your engagement is essential to meeting our promise of educational excellence.

Message from the EDITOR Message from the EDITOR
Students really enjoy meeting the person behind the gift. I know I did when I was a student!
My first scholarship (and I was very much a need-based student) was called the "Ben L. Jirou Scholarship for Scientific Research." Mr. Jirou was a member of the International Boundary and Water Commission, and was an early proponent of clean waterways. His wife established the scholarship in his College of Science (I hold biology and chemistry degrees from my undergrad institution) upon his death, and it went to a first year need-based student. ME! I was the first.
Though I never pursued my science degree (life and kids interrupted that) I like to think she would be happy and proud to know that I have worked for the last 16 years raising funds for a college of medicine and a school of dentistry. Tangential, I know, but I've done what I could to promote science in my own way.
It's been DECADES since I got the award and met Mrs. Jirou. She literally made my life, as I know it today, possible. I am so grateful to her.
I want you to know that dental students for generations will feel the same way about you.
In this issue, we share some of the stories of people like you who built our existing scholarship endowments through their generosity. Thank you.

The Virginia Dental Association has witnessed the exponential growth of dental student indebtedness and its effects on the state of current dentistry. In 2014, following years of support for dental student scholarships and with a desire to decrease student debt, VDA leadership created an endowed scholarship at the VCU School of Dentistry.
Virginia Dental Association Scholars have expressed interest in practicing in Virginia and in organized dentistry.

Tell us a little bit about yourself: I wasborn in Iran and immigrated to the U.S. to pursue higher education. I studied engineering and worked as a faculty member before starting dental school. I am married to my supportive husband. Our hobbies are baking and shopping. I also enjoy spending time with my friends.
Why are you passionate about dentistry? Comparing dentistry to my background, engineering, expresses my passion. Dentistry is a lifetime commitment to provide care that improves mental and physical aspects of people’s lives. I look forward to using my art and science background in maintaining dental health in underserved populations.
I have always enjoyed learning and pursuing higher education. I hope to continue on this path and help my patients in the future. Thank you so much for your generous donation as it is amazing to be recognized for my hard work and passion for dentistry!

D.D.S. CLASS OF 1983 "WINNEBAGO"SCHOLARSHIP
The memory of rolling a “Winnebago” from the Lyons Building to VCU Dental Building 1 is hard to forget. Today it would be laughable, but for the Class of 1983 it
was necessary. They thought there was no more iconic image of their class and named their scholarship for it.
“We carried everything in our Winnebagos,” said Ellen Byrne (B.S. ’77, D.D.S. ’83, Ph.D. ‘91). “We purchased our own instruments and operatory chair. It’s hilarious to think about.” Today’s students aren’t rolling Winnebagos around the school, but they do have other issues to contend with, including student loans and a curriculum that rarely allows time for multiple jobs to help make ends meet. The Winnebago scholarship helps reduce student debt load.

Tell us a little bit about yourself: I am a Chesterfield, Virginia, native, married to my super supportive husband, and we have three daughters and four “fur kids.” I enjoy anything involving music - singing, dancing, theatre. In my spare time, you can usually find me baking for my business (Sweet Bites RVA) or spending time with family and friends.
Why are you passionate about dentistry? Because of the versatility it offers. Dentistry is not only the perfect blend of science, artistry, and public service, but it also offers the possibilities of practice ownership, teaching, research, outreach, and a career filled with countless learning opportunities.
I am so honored to be a two-time recipient of the Class of 1983 "Winnebago" Scholarship. These funds contribute towards my education by lessening the financial burden, and with three children, I really appreciate it. Thank you DDS Class of 1983!

DELTA DENTAL OF VIRGINIA FOUNDATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
The Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation was founded to help improve the oral health and, subsequently, the overall health of the people of the commonwealth. Support focuses on initiatives that improve oral health through
improved access to oral care, oral health education or oral health research.
Established in 2013, Delta Dental scholarships are awarded to dental students who hope to practice in chronically underserved areas of Virginia.

I am a single woman who loves art, being outside, and gardening. I grew up on a farm and I love horseback riding and animals of any kind. I have two cats right now and go home often to visit my parents and the farm in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Why are you passionate about dentistry?
I have been passionate about dentistry since I started shadowing in the Charlottesville free clinic. I think that there is nothing more rewarding than helping someone get out of pain or feel more comfortable in dentistry. I worked under really kind dentists there.
Being rewarded for pursuing my dream is a gift I am so grateful for. This scholarship reminds me of how much I love my state and cannot wait to work here. I feel so lucky to work in dentistry and help people out every day and this scholarship helps so much!

Tell us a little bit about yourself: I'm an accomplished pianist and violinist, and have played in several orchestras and other musical organizations. I enjoy photography, running, and watching documentaries. I am the second-youngest of seven children, and enjoy spending time with my parents, siblings, and eleven nieces and nephews.
Why are you passionate about dentistry? My passion comes from my mother, who stressed the importance of oral care to my family because of her parents and aunt who suffered complications from undiagnosed oral disease. I love dentistry because it allows me to prevent disease, make a difference, and put a smile on the faces in my community.
"Receiving this scholarship lets me know there are people who want to support students. Scholarships like this reduce the burden of debt as we pursue one of the most expensive professional degrees. Even though most dentists will have the financial capacity to pay off their debt, the cost of dental education is very discouraging and limits the quality of life for students with loans. This scholarship inspires me to give back when I am financially able to contribute to the success of the next generation."

Why are you passionate about dentistry? My passion derives from the lack of proper dental hygiene in underprivileged communities. Many rural areas or low-income populations lack the accessibility and knowledge of preventative dental care. I want to reach out to these communities with my own education and knowledge to make a difference.
I am sincerely honored to receive the United Concordia Dental Scholarship as a second degree student pursuing a career in dental hygiene. Since I am a second degree student, I am limited to the amount of financial aid I can receive throughout the year. This scholarship has immensely reduced the financial burden of completing my degree in dental hygiene. FRANK DAVID LOW, D.D.S. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
When he entered dental school at MCV, Frank David Low was on his way to fulfilling his father’s wish that he’d become a dentist. Not content without a challenge, he spent the summer between his junior and senior years in Nicaragua under the auspices of Amigos de las Americas. Setting up a tent office, he would spend the day almost exclusively pulling teeth to do what he could to take away the pain of his patients. That experience moved him deeply, and, after graduation and an internship at the VA hospital in Los Angeles, Frank had hoped to serve the underprivileged, relieving their agony and teaching effective dental hygiene.
An exceptional man who deeply loved his family and infant daughter, Frank David Low died young. The memorial fund established in his name assists future generations.

Dr. Thang Pham and his wife Dr. Nu Dang left war-torn Vietnam in 1979 by crossing into Cambodia and then into Thailand. It was a journey made on foot, through forests and across battlefields, through a foreign land fraught with danger. There was no easy
escape from Vietnam and many who tried did not make it. Including Pham’s younger sister, Phạm thị Minh-Tuyền. She was 22 years old.
It was in Cambodia that Pham and Dang befriended Dr. Kyle Coble, who was a volunteer dentist with the American Refugee Committee working in refugee camps near the border of Thailand. Pham and Dang created this scholarship in 2017 in honor of Dr. Coble, whose friendship helped them reach freedom, and in memory of Phạm thị Minh-Tuyền, whose sacrifice reminds them of its cost.
Pham and Dang were the first of 10 family members to graduate from VCU (most from the School of Dentistry).

My incredibly selfless wife allows me to be a dedicated student and father and to pursue my hobbies: golf and cutting hair. I am someone who finds joy in challenges.
Why are you passionate about dentistry?
My passion began at nine years old. Fast moving baseballs and teeth aren’t a good combo. A dentist worked with people, pain, power tools, and artistic materials to fix my painful and broken smile. I wanted to do likewise. My passion is growing as I’m repeatedly reminded of dentistry’s importance and difficulty.
"I won't be the first or last to admit that dental school is busy, but it doesn't compare to the work that my wife puts in as a stay-at-home-mom. DAVID C. SARRETT, D.M.D., M.S., AND ELIZABETH G. SARRETT, M.ED. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Though
he doesn’t recall why, Dave Sarrett knew from childhood he wanted to be a dentist.
He and his wife Beth met in college at Villanova University. Dave was from south Florida and found his way to Villanova on a track and field scholarship as a pole vaulter. They were friends, only, but he did take Beth on several dates right before leaving college for dental school at the University of Florida. Dave stayed at Beth’s home on his way back to Florida and to her surprise, he proposed. She was 19 and he was 20.
They say it wasn’t the greatest example for their two children about deciding to get married, but it worked! Their daughter unexpectedly chose to follow Dave’s footsteps and is now a dentist; she contributes to the scholarship fund. Beth and their son chose other career fields, speech language pathology and law respectively. Through the years, Dave has helped Beth with many of her patients since speech does come through the mouth.
The Sarretts’ scholarship, targeted to students with an interest in academic dentistry or dental research, illustrates their commitment to supporting VCU dental students across the board. Dave’s extensive career as faculty member, department chair, associate vice president, and dean fostered the couple’s interest in giving back. Not only through this endowed scholarship but also through a professorship and research fund they’ve established.

SCHOLARSHIPS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
The stories shared in this issue of Dentistry magazine represent nearly 100 scholarships created by generous alumni and friends like you. You recognized a loved one, celebrated a milestone, or memorialized a faculty member. The reasons may vary, but one thing is constant: your kindness made a difference.
For today’s D.D.S. applicants, for example, the choice to attend the VCU School of Dentistry is tougher than yours was. Talented students attracted to the school’s many strengths often accept competitive offers when faced with mountains of debt and dated buildings. Your generous gift can help change that.
“Now more than ever, we must be more competitive to attract students, including those here in Virginia,” says Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations Gloria Callihan, J.D. “Right in our own backyard, top students are choosing other dental schools with better financial aid packages and scholarships.”
Superstar supporters, superstar students
The VCU School of Dentistry now offers a scholarship for an incoming D.D.S. student. The Superstar Scholarship, established jointly by VCU DentalCare and Richard Abrahamian (D.D.S. ’68), was awarded for the first time this year. Hallie Craig, the inaugural recipient, benefits from four years of substantially reduced tuition. Provided she remains a “superstar” student.
“Our students leave dental school with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt,” says Dean Lyndon Cooper. “This new four-year financial award helps offset that obstacle. Make no mistake, everyone at the school is 100% committed to student scholarships. In fact, we feel so strongly about it, that VCU Dental Care recently invested an additional $500,000 bringing the total endowment to $1.5 million. And it all started with this creative funding partnership. This is the power of alumni philanthropy.”
Both Dean Cooper and Associate Dean Callihan invite you to join us to help reach the $4 million Superstar goal. To learn more, contact Gloria Callihan at (804) 828-8101 or gfcallihan@vcu.edu.

GEORGE W. BURKE JR. GRADUATE STUDENT FUND FOR ORAL HEALTH RESEARCH
Dr. George W. Burke Jr. published much of the original research on calcium hydroxyapatite and pulpal microbiology. He was a man of science who had a profound appreciation for the arts. In addition to being a faculty member at MCV Hospital, where he taught anatomy and dental histology, he also held the appointment of Professor of Dentistry at the School of Dentistry where he consulted and lectured on numerous dental topics. He also served as the editor of the Virginia Dental Journal from 1970 until 1984. Burke’s students often described him as having a uniquely bright mind. His commitment to quality research and truth in publishing served as an edifying example for all those who knew him, especially younger faculty members. His editorials often were a reflection of the unusually broad scope of his interests and they consistently urged the reader to improve their minds, to be as insatiably curious as he was, and to extend activities beyond the limitations of dentistry.
In 2017, Dr. George Burke III and his wife, Lyons Hardy Burke created this fund as a way to honor George Burke Jr.’s passion for oral research and his devotion to inspire students. Burke III has fond boyhood memories of doing his homework in a small office in the VCU Dental Building 1 while his father worked upstairs in his lab. He credits being exposed to cadavers at an early age in MCV anatomy labs as having sparked his interest in medicine. Burke retired from practice as a pulmonary specialist in 2014. This fund will provide professional development funding for oral health research graduate students in the Philips Institute for Oral Health Research.
