The stories shared in this issue of Dentistry magazine represent nearly 100 scholarships created by generous alumni and friends like you. You recognized a loved one, celebrated a milestone, or memorialized a faculty member. The reasons may vary, but one thing is constant: your kindness

made a difference.

For today’s D.D.S. applicants, for example, the choice to attend the VCU School of Dentistry is tougher than yours was. Talented students attracted to the school’s many strengths often accept competitive offers when faced with mountains of debt and dated buildings.

Your generous gift can help change that.

“Now more than ever, we must be more competitive to attract students, including those here in Virginia,” says Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations Gloria Callihan, J.D. “Right in our own backyard, top students are choosing other dental schools with better financial aid packages and scholarships.”

Superstar supporters, superstar students

The VCU School of Dentistry now offers a scholarship for an incoming D.D.S. student. The Superstar Scholarship, established jointly by VCU DentalCare and Richard Abrahamian (D.D.S. ’68), was awarded for the first time this year. Hallie Craig, the inaugural recipient, benefits from four years of substantially reduced tuition. Provided she remains a “superstar” student.

“Our students leave dental school with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt,” says Dean Lyndon Cooper. “This new four-year financial award helps offset that obstacle. Make no mistake, everyone at the school is 100% committed to student scholarships. In fact, we feel so strongly about it, that VCU Dental Care recently invested an additional $500,000 bringing the total endowment to $1.5 million. And it all started with this creative funding partnership. This is the power of alumni philanthropy.”

Both Dean Cooper and Associate Dean Callihan invite you to join us to help reach the $4 million Superstar goal. To learn more, contact Gloria Callihan at (804) 828-8101 or gfcallihan@vcu.edu.
