Today,theChainedesRôtisseursYoungSommelier CompetitionistheonlycompetitioninCanada designedspecificallytotestanddevelopyoung Sommeliersandwineprofessionals.Thegoalofthe competitionistoencourageandpromotethe developmentofyoungwineprofessionals.


Candidatesforthisyear’scompetitionhadtobeover 21yearsoldandbornafterSeptember10,1997.The 2025competitionhadtwostages.Thewrittentheory examtookplaceonFebruary22,2025,heldeitherin personinCalgaryorundertheoversightofaproctor inthecandidate’scity.

There’sanunderlyingthemethatclearlydefinesthe careerofToni-MarieIon-Brown,CCM,general managerofCalgaryPetroleumClub(CPC).Sure, Ion-Brownisoneofonlyahandfuloflong-time Canadianclubmanagerswhosecareershave unfoldedatasingleclub.Butthere’ssomuchmore tohersuccessstorythanalengthyevolutionofskills. Eversincethemuch-admiredCPCgeneralmanager joinedtheCalgaryclubasaservermaking$5an hourin1990,Ion-Brownhasworkedtirelesslyto unselfishlyinvestinthelivesofothers–CPCstaff, clubmembersandthecommunityasawhole.
That’sabigreasonwhyshewasselectedasthis year’sClubManagementAssociationofCanada (CMAC)’sClubManageroftheYear.
LongbeforeIon-Brownbecamegeneralmanagerin August2017,shelivedbyCPC’sfivecorevalues: Excellence;Service;It’sPersonal;Respect;and Care.Infact,shegoesbeyondthecallofdutyto makethingspersonalwhileattendingstaffweddings andgraduations,theirchildren’sconcerts,members’ birthdaycelebrationsandfunerals.
“Wehave115staffmembersserving2,900members intotal,includingmorethan1,100fullmembers.Itis averybusyclub,with125eventseachweek–that’s aphenomenalamount.Andweallenjoyworking withinagreatenvironment.Ilovemyco-workers.It’s nothardtogotoworkeachday,”shesaid.Likewise, thepersonablegeneralmanagerembracesCPC’s membership.“It’salwaysaboutpeople,”saidIonBrown.“Ourmembersarethemostincredible people.It’saprivilegeworkingforthem.Someare OrderofCanadarecipients,othershavetheirnames onhospitalsandschools,andonbuildings–they’ve builtthisprovince.I’mveryfortunatetoknowthemon apersonallevel.”
WhenconsideringIon-BrownforClubManagerofthe Yearhonours,theCMACAwardsCommittee recognizedthatIon-Brownhasnavigatedherclub throughseveraleconomicdownturns,theCOVID-19 pandemicand,mostrecently,constructionofthenew GreenLinelight-railinfrontofCPC,whichhas obstructedaccesstotheloadingdock,walkwayand frontentrance.Yetdespitethesechallenges,shehas ledtheclubinearninganadditional$1.4millionin revenueoverthepreviousyear.Exceedingoriginal targets,CPC’sFundraisingCommitteehasraised $2.5million,thanksinparttoIon-Brown’sleadership, whichhasalsobeenvisiblethroughhersupportof

CMACdesignations.Shepersonallyadvocatedto CPC’sFinanceCommitteeandboardofgovernors foraneducationbudgettoallowstafftopursue educationwithCMACandtoattendconferences.As alife-longlearnerandpromoterofeducation,IonBrowncontinuestoentrustCMACwiththeeducation ofherseniormanagementteam.
In2023,Ion-Brownintroducedtheclub’sProfessional Women’sSubcommitteeanddevelopedinitiativesto increasefemalemembership.Thisefforthasalready resultedinanincreaseof10percentmorefemale membersoverrecentyears.
Ion-Brown’sleadershipandvisionextendsbeyond herownclub.Since2020,shehasco-chaired CMAC’sDiversityandInclusionCommittee.Infact, Ion-Browntakesdiversityandinclusiontoheart.She hasbeenanadvocateforCalgary’sIndigenous communityand,foradecade,hasprovidedmeeting spaceforeducationandtrainingofIndigenous leaders.ShealsositsonCPC’sIndigenous Subcommittee.Andshewasinstrumentalin welcomingtheCalgaryBlackChamberstoCPC, wheretheynowholdtheirmonthlymeetings. Furthermore,Ion-Brownparticipatesontheexecutive committeeofChaînedesRôtisseurs,thelongeststandingdiningguildintheworld.

CMACnationalboardmemberChrisSerré,CCM, clubhousemanageratRosedaleGolfClubin Toronto,ischairoftheassociation’sAwards Committee,andrecognizedIon-Brown“reallyhada vision”inregardstoservingoneclubduringher illustriouscareer.“Itwouldbeeasytolookbackwards athercareer,buttheClubManageroftheYear Awardfocusesonthelast12to18months,andhow acandidatehas‘accomplishedandovercomea challengeaboveandbeyondtheirtypicalrole.’And whathasstoodoutaboutToni-Mariearethingslike managingthroughtheconstructiondisruptionand recentrevenuegrowth.Andweacknowledgedthat sherecentlyintroducedtheProfessionalWomen’s Subcommitteetoincreasefemalemembershipather club,”saidSerré.
Ion-Brown’srisethroughtheranksatCPCinvolveda strongworkethic,puttingpeoplefirstand,asSerré stated,vision.JusttwoyearsafterjoiningCPCin 1990,Ion-Brownbecametheclub’sfoodand beveragesupervisor.Shewasfoodandbeverage managerfrom1999to2015,assistantgeneral managerfrom2015to2017and,finally,general manager–afterbeatingout125applicantsforthe position.
FormerCMACpresidentRodThomas,whopassed awayin2019,wasCPCgeneralmanagerfor27 years.HewasoneofIon-Brown’searliestmentors and,assheexplains,oneofherstrongest supporters.“HesetthetoneforhowIfeelaboutour clubbysettingagreatexampleofhowageneral managershouldlead,soIwasfortunateto,very earlyon,haveagreatrolemodel,”saidIon-Brown. CPC(establishedin1948)recentlycelebratedits 75thanniversary–Ion-Brownhasbeenabigpartof thatstoryforalmosthalfoftheclub’sexistence.In herletterofsupportforthisyear’sClubManagerof theYear,CPCpastpresidentMonaJasinskiwrote thatIon-Brownisoneofthemostexceptionalleaders shehasworkedwithduringherown35-year

In2025,ourBailliage’sdiningthemeis“Aroundthe worldin6months”.Thisparticulardinnerhighlighted therichterroiroftheMaritimes.Wehadfourguests flyinfromWinnipegandtwoguestsjoinusfromNew Brunswick,makingourdinnerevenmorespecial. Dimlightingandvelvetymusicpairedwellwiththe sleekItalianfurnitureandsoftScandi-inspireddesign –theeyesareimmediatelydrawntowardstheceiling that’scurvedlikeaship'shullandguidesthegaze intotheharbourthroughthethreewallsofglassthat makeuptherestaurant.

CalgaryBailliJoeScorgiewelcomedustothe MalcolmHotelandwarmlythankedourhosts.He presentedMarkWilson,BailliProvincialHonoraireof thePrairieswithhis20-yearmembershippinand recognizedourguests.Wewerethentreatedtoan outstandingeightcourseextravaganzaaccompanied beautifullybycarefullyselectedwines.




Followingthedinner,itwastimeforthebrigadeto enterthediningroom.Astheyarrived,membersand theirguestsstood,givingthemaroundofapplause, Joemadesuretotoastthemfirstsothattheycould enjoytheirchampagne.InJoe’sclosingcomments hehighlightedthemilitarystyleservice,ofwhichonly abouthalfofthebrigadehaddonebefore,theywere exceptionallywelltrained.Everycoursewasa delight,wellpaired,andpreparedtoperfection.He madesuretomakeaspecialnoteaboutthetiming neededtomakethismanysouffléstoappearfrom thekitchenataboutthesametime.

Thesmallandcozydiningroomsetwassetwith attractive,individualplacesettingsonfourtablesfor four,alllookingverynormal,withnohintofwhatwas tocome.

Ourtraditionalglassof“Bubbles”wasenjoyedbefore wetookourassignedplaces.Theevening’shost, TravisTodd,wasanamazingraconteurand entertaineduswithafascinatingstory,tellingushow wewereabouttobethrilledbytheanticsoffourof theworld’ssmallestchefs,righthere,inthisvery room,inVictoria.And,thattheseamazingculinary specialistswerenotonlygoingtoshowushowthey preparedtheirassignedcourse,butwould,atthe sametime,beincompetitionwitheachotherforour votes,to“crown”whowasbestchef.
Thelightsloweredandthereateachplace,takingan introductorybowappearedathreeDVisualof SenoritaPequenaMariafromSpain,PiccoloLuciano fromItaly,ChisanoTakahirofromJapan,andthe original,“LePetitChef”fromFrance.Whilereputed tobe“friends”,thiswasn’tveryobviousaseachlittle chefinturn,whippedaroundthetableastheybuilta visualoftheirrespectivecourseandhilariously sabotagedtheeffortsofanother.AfterSenorita PequenaMariahadcompletedacrobatically producingthevisualofthefirstcourse,HostTravis
quicklyintroducedthearrivalofthedeliciousrealtimecourseofThinlySlicedProsciutto,Marinated HeirloomTomatoes,BasilCreamandCrispy CiabattaCroutons,theactualworkoftheMarriot’s ChefReneWidmer.ABlackHillsVoignierwasa pleasantaccompaniment.Eachsuccessivecourse thatemanatedfromourreal-timeChefWidmer’s kitchenwasatriumph,andanelegantrepresentation ofeachdiminutivechef’s3-DMasterpiece.

AlldinerswerekeentoseewhatanticsPiccoloand Takahirowouldgetuptoinordertounderminetheir chefcolleaguesandclaimthecovetedwinnertitle. PequenaMariawasparticularlynaughtyandthe othersdidtheirbesttodefeatLePetitChefwhowas alittleclumsyinthevisualofhismealpreparations. However,intheend,thevotewassplitbetweenthe four,soallweredeclared“winners”.
