Benners Hotel Tralee is proud to be associated with KCFE Tralee. We regularly welcome students from the college on work experience. It is always a pleasure to have them work with us and we are amazed at how much knowledge they have received during their studies at KCFE. They are professional and hard working and I firmly believe this is due to the training that they are receiving at the college. Along with their training and work experience sought by the college, the students are really prepared to join the workforce. Here in Benners we are also proud sponsors of the college men’s

football team. It is always great to support a local team and we love to see our logo emblazoned on the pitch. KCFE is a huge asset to the town and the benefits in the long term, particularly in the hospitality industry are huge. With tourism playing such a major part in the economy in Kerry, it is magnificent to literally have a training field within the community.

Consult the Student Resources section of the CAO website for the following: • QQI Entry Requirements Look-Up • Scoring System for QQI Awards • Quota of places reserved for QQI Level 5 applicants on Nursing courses Applicants applying to the CAO via a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 award should ensure that their qualification meets the minimum entry requirements of the higher education institution they intend applying to. Every assistance will be given to KCFE registered students as they make their application to CAO using the QQI award.

Therapist at Plush Beauty Salon When I left school I was seventeen and had completed my Leaving Certificate…but from early on I knew I wanted to do beauty as a career. Aside from private courses there are not many places offering beauty training in Kerry so when I heard the Kerry College of Further Education offered beauty therapy training I knew that would be the course for me. I applied and had my course secured before I even sat my leaving certificate

I really enjoyed the course, it was very well taught by my lecturers and I learned so much. It’s a course I would definitely recommend to anybody looking into beauty in the future. The hard work over the year has resulted in me successfully securing a start in my career working as a professional beauty therapist and makeup artist in Plush Beauty Salon in Tralee.

“I learned so much. It’s a course I would definitely recommend.”

Therapist at Innisfallen Health & Beauty Rooms, Great Southern Hotel. After doing my Leaving Certificate I attended KCFE for the two-year Advanced Beauty Therapy programme. This course provided me with an opportunity to get industry certification which enabled me to find interesting and rewarding employment after the course. The course gave me all the skills I needed to be confident in my work. The college facilities in the beauty department are really spectacular. My teachers were very supportive and encouraging throughout my time at college and I made great friends along the way. The course was not only strong on beauty skills, but also on the business side of the beauty industry

and both are necessary to ensure that I now can give the best experience to my clients. I am employed as a Therapist in the Innisfallen Health and Beauty Rooms Great Southern Hotel, Killarney. I am delighted to recommend this course and to encourage others to go to KCFE.

“I’m glad that I did the course in KCFE because the course was strong on both the beauty skills and the business side of the beauty industry.

Dental Receptionist Mac Domhnaill Dental Practice I graduated from Kerry College of Further Education with a QQI Level 5 in Secretarial Studies Medical/Legal. I went back to college with the aim of getting a qualification and the ability to gain full time employment. The course was fantastic and had all the modules you would need to succeed in the administration sector. The course gives you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a sector in which you would be interested in working.

I completed my work experience in the University Hospital Kerry and I was able to put all the skills I had gained into practice. This was a fantastic opportunity and I felt what I had learnt in the KCFE was extremely beneficial in the office. The course was challenging with assignments and other deadlines but it was all worth it. Since graduating in 2018 I have gained full time employment in a dental practice, Mac Domhnaill Dental Practice in Tralee as a dental receptionist.

“Since graduating in 2018 I have gained full time employment.”

Business Studies Graduate Like a lot of people I didn’t know what I wanted after the Leaving Cert. I was looking at my options and remembered when KCFE gave a talk at my school in Killarney. I decided to enrol on the Level 5 Business Studies course even though I hadn’t studied business for the leaving cert! This course really helped me to make a concrete decision and I decided what I wanted to do. I progressed to study the Bachelor of Commerce Degree in NUI Galway. I’m so glad I did the Level 5 beforehand as KCFE really allowed me to develop my business skills and I feel I have an extra advantage as the modules in KCFE prepared me for my future in

NUIG. The two week work placement prepared me well as it gave me a real insight in to what working in a business environment was like. From the very first day, everyone at KCFE was so supportive and the teachers were so helpful.

“KCFE really allowed me to develop my business skills and I feel I have an extra advantage.”

Office Manager. Absolute Safety Matters Ltd. In 2010 I had an option to return to college. I secured a place but I had a lot of insecurities about returning to college – Would I be able to juggle parenthood/a part time job and college work? At this same time, I was offered a job. I left my insecurities get in the way and I took the job. I often wondered what if? Would my life be different? I was tired of working unsociable hours. I often felt I was missing out.

with the Level 6 Office Management Course. Both my years were very enjoyable in KCFE; I made a new set of friends. The skills and experience I gained throughout the two years were very beneficial to me and allowed me to become employable. Taking part in my work placement during my Office Management I was offered a part time position and I decided to take it. My part time job has now turned in to a full-time position as Office Manager within the same company Absolute Safety Matters Ltd. I am so happy I returned to college, my only regret was not doing it sooner.

“I am so happy I returned to college, my only regret was not doing it sooner.”

In 2016 fate intervened. I saw the KCFE advertisements in the newspaper and I decided to apply. I was offered the Level 5 Office Administration course. The support that was offered from the class co-ordinator and teachers made the year very achievable. When the option came to do a second year in Office Management; I put a lot of thought into it. I knew the chances were high if I didn’t go directly into the course I wouldn’t return to college. I went ahead

After my Leaving Cert I didn’t feel too confident about going straight into third level education. I didn’t feel ready for strenuous academic work and I needed to learn how to manage time for assignment work. So, when I heard there was a PLC in Tralee in Law, an area I had always considered going into, I took the chance. It was only a year, if it didn’t work out it wasn’t that bad. Looking back now, it was easily the most beneficial academic year I have had so far. In addition to what I learned in the classroom, the work experience I did with Foley’s and Associates, Tralee, gave me the opportunity to put the academic knowledge into practical use. I am currently doing Journalism and New Media in the University of Limerick, where I am taking Law as an elective subject and where Media

Law in particular is incredibly important. I consider the skills I learned in Tralee invaluable, both academically and in my extracurricular activities. Going from knowing nothing about law and glazing over when it was brought up in conversation to understanding the law and the legal process to a healthy degree is something I know I wouldn’t have been able to do without the help and support offered by the KCFE staff. Thinking back to where I was after Leaving Cert to getting an A1 in my first semester Law module in UL there is an astounding difference. I wouldn’t have managed that without the year spent in KCFE.

GRADUATE SUCCESS STORY

Tara Ahern

Childcare Graduate After completing my Leaving Certificate I wasn’t sure if I was ready to commit to four years of studying a Level 8 course so I applied for the Childcare PLC at Kerry College of Further Education. Doing this PLC was the best decision I could have made as it made me feel confident that I would be able to complete a Level 8 Early Childhood Care and Education course in the future. The PLC combined theory and practical work. I got to attend workshops such as a Play Therapy workshop. We were given the opportunity to go on work placement to put theory into practice. It was those two experiences in particular that helped me realise that I really did want to be an Early Years Educator. As a result of that, I applied for the Early Childhood Care and Education course in Mary Immaculate College using the QQI points system. Thanks

A P P LY O N L I N E K E R R Y F E . I E

to the help from my teachers at KCFE and a lot of time in front of my laptop, I achieved the grades I needed and received confirmation that I had secured a place on that course. I am only in my first semester and what I learned from the PLC is already helping me through my assignments. I would highly recommend doing a PLC at KCFE to anyone who, like me, is unsure of their career or college choices as it provides you with the perfect foundation to help you feel confident and prepared to move on to a Level 8 course. Without KCFE I would not have been able to reach my goal of studying at Mary I.

Pre-Teaching and Education Studies Student Teaching is a career that I have had a natural inclination towards because it’s a profession that allows you to really make a positive difference in a person’s life. When I heard that KCFE had introduced a Pre-teaching and Education Studies Level 5 programme I decided to enrol so that I could appreciate exactly what the job entailed and to enable me to make an informed decision about whether to invest many years into teacher training. The course itself has been interesting providing me with knowledge on fundamental education concepts. I have been able to focus on education, training and development aswell as learning about interpersonal and group behaviour. I have participated in peer teaching and micro-teaching and have been given constructive feedback on my performance. There have been interesting trips as well such as a trip to the

Forest School in Limerick which helps to broaden the mind regarding education in general. It’s definitely a great course and I would recommend it to anyone considering teaching. The course has links to a variety of Arts Degrees throughout Ireland as well as several other third level courses. For me one of the highlights of the year has been my election as the PRO to the student council. It has presented me with opportunities to enhance my communication skills, make new friends and enhance my CV. My time at the college in Tralee has been rewarding and enjoyable. In particular, it is noticeable that the Principal and teachers are all so welcoming, considerate towards students and great role models for anyone thinking about teaching as a career in the future. The atmosphere in the college is so upbeat, there is a great community spirit and a lot of support for anyone who wants to avail of it.

“There is a great community spirit and a lot of support.”

Being a single mother to two children I felt that I needed to build a future for both my children and myself. Like anything in life I had second thoughts about even taking up the course, I was worried about how I would juggle college life and being a parent. I was worried about the fact that I was a mature student, how would I fit in with the younger generation and how would I cope with the pressures of assignments and meeting deadlines. Once I walked in the door of KCFE I felt at ease, at first it was daunting not knowing what lay ahead but once we got into our class and met our teachers we were on

the road to success. It wasn’t long before I took up the role of Class Rep and was also Communication Officer on the Students Union. No matter what issue I had or the class had, I felt that the teachers went above and beyond their call of duty to help us in every way they could. I did my work experience in Moyderwell Primary school and the Afterschool also in Moyderwell. I absolutely loved my time and realised how different and special each child is, and how they can blossom into amazing adults in the future. I felt from completing my work experience and finishing the course, that I could make a difference in a child’s life.

If you require any assistance telephone 066 7121741 or email info@kerryfe.ie

Fortunately I am currently working with the most amazing children in the Afterschool in Moyderwell alongside with Helen Brick. These children inspire me every day to get out of bed in the morning and keep going in this crazy world. If you are reading this and thinking about taking the plunge and go back into education, I cannot recommend KCFE enough, they will be with you every step of the way and you will help achieve your dreams. Yes, it will be stressful and they will be plenty of challenges along the way, but it is worth it when you stand on stage on graduation day and receive your award.

DEPARTMENT OF CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING GRADUATE SUCCESS STORY

Elaina Norris Engineering Graduate

I began studying a PLC course in KCFE in September 2017. I studied the Engineering Technology Level 5 course which gave me valuable insights into the various areas of engineering that I could study when I progressed to college. During my year

because I was young and immature, unsure of what I would like to study. In that year I made up my mind about what course I would like to study and it also gave me time to mature. I also had the time to look more into the third level colleges and courses and what they had to offer. For example, I researched the Level 8 Biomedical Engineering Degree in Cork Institute of Technology which is what I am doing now. There was a DuPey Synthes Johnson and Johnson sponsored Biomedical Engineering scholarship available at CIT for incoming students. I applied for the scholarship, was shortlisted, interviewed and was delighted to be awarded it. I’m looking forward to an exciting career in biomedical engineering.

I was young and immature, unsure of what I would like to study.

in KCFE I studied a variety of engineering-related subjects such as maths, mechanics, and workshop theory. I also completed workshop practices and completed work experience with mechanics. I also completed a Communications class which prepared me for college and work-related tasks, such as presentations, group work, and interviews. I originally opted to go to Kerry College of Further Education for the year rather than to continue directly to college from school

My name is Danielle Considine. I am currently working in Con Brouder Fitted Kitchens in Glin, Co. Limerick. I secured this job as a direct result of doing the two week work experience part of the QQI Furniture Making course. As a mature student I made a decision to return to education. I had thought about doing a course which involved working with my hands. This is when I made the decision to enrol on the Furniture Making and Design course in KCFE. They have outstanding facilities in KCFE for anyone with any kind of disability. I have Asperger’s Syndrome which affects me in many different ways. I felt really

comfortable going to college here, the staff for learning support are amazing. The teachers on the Furniture Making course are second to none and will do everything in their power to help and encourage you to succeed. As I had never done woodwork before even in school, I thought I might struggle but that was not the case. In fact, I excelled in this field with the help and knowledge of my practical lecturer. I found employment which I am enjoying in the area I am qualified in.

Music Performance Graduate I’m a 19 year old student studying Music and Arts at UCC. Back in 2017 I didn’t think I would be studying here in UCC at all. I went down in my leaving cert points and I honestly thought my life was over! I had two options to choose from, whether to repeat sixth year or study at Kerry College of Further Education and do a PLC in Music Performance, something I am very passionate about. Thankfully I choose to study in KCFE and it was the best decision I could have made. I made friends for life and the classes were so helpful. They taught me skills I hadn’t learned in school. It gave me a head start in my UCC course this year. After learning how to write essays properly and how to create presentations you could say I was a step ahead! The staff were so kind and helpful. There was always a buzz around the college with concerts and fundraisers but also workshops to guide you towards

success. My course was amazing, I got to perform during lunch time and even in venues outside of the college. I studied music theory and performing but also other skills such as event management and teamwork skills. I was also lucky to do work experience. Kerry College offers a wide range of courses to help you succeed and gives you the opportunity to go on and apply for courses in 3rd level colleges. Without achieving a Level 5 in Music I would not be in UCC now studying the course of my dreams. I hope Kerry College of Further Education helps you find your path and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

“I hope KCFE helps you find your path and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!”

Multimedia Graduate Kerry College of Further Education didn’t only help me to figure out what I want to do in college but also prepared me for it. Going to college straight after the Leaving Cert can be very hard for some, it definitely was for me as I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study. I always had a great interest in art and I knew that I wanted to study something that is creative and expressive. I am currently studying Creative Digital Media in CIT and I couldn’t be more happy with my decision. I would highly recommend Kerry College of Further Education to anyone who is feeling a little lost or doesn’t know what they want to do in college or further in life with their career. If you are creative and have an interest in media I would advise you picking the Multimedia with Graphic Design course in KCFE as it gives you a good insight in to media and design and you learn a lot of skills.

Art, Craft and Design Graduate I am happy that I did both the Level 5 and Level 6 Art, Craft and Design courses at KCFE. Afterwards I was delighted when the opportunity arose to apply for second year of the Illustration Degree course in the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. I learnt many different techniques during my years in Tralee and was exposed to new materials and methods, in which the teachers were well experienced. The course consisted of a wide range of modules. I particularly enjoyed the Exhibition Techniques module as it gave me an insight into how art works in the real world. We also had the opportunity to plan and host our own exhibition as part of an assignment together with another course group; an opportunity in which many students took to sell their own work.

Through the undertaking of assignments and encouragement from the teachers, I learnt what field of art I was most suited to. Since starting college I was able to take the education route with illustration, a joint course that will qualify me as a secondary school art teacher. KCFE was extremely supportive of me during my studies and I cannot recommend the course highly enough. Spending the two year in KCFE has not only given me many new skills artistically, but helped me grow in confidence, both of which I am bringing with me to the next stage of my education.

“I particularly enjoyed the Exhibition Techniques module as it gave me an insight into how art works in the real world.

Animator. Graduate of KCFE. A graduate from the Limerick School or Art and Design where I studied for a BA in Animation and Motion Design. I am currently working at the largest Animation studio in Europe ‘Boulder Media’ in Dublin as a Compositing and SFX (Special Effects) Artist. I wasn’t a huge fan of school, however, I still studied hard and managed to achieve a very good leaving certificate. When I left school in 2013, animation was not even considered a realistic career with good job prospects – it was practically unheard of at the time. I completed the Post Leaving Cert course in Art, Craft and Design in KCFE with the intention of becoming an artist of

some kind – either a painter or a sculptor. However, as luck would have it, there was a new Animation course starting in Limerick and I was offered a place on that course and the rest is history… Taking some time after school to do the PLC helped me enormously, allowing me time to create a plan of action that was right for me personally. Speaking as a recent graduate, this is possibly the best time ever to study Animation. Not only is Animation a really exciting industry to work in, it is a very wise career investment. The entertainment industry in Ireland is growing at such an alarming rate the Animation, Film and Gaming studios are starving for new talented animators

“This is possibly the best time ever to study Animation.”

Andrea O’Callaghan Dance Student

My name is Andrea O Callaghan and I’m a student at KCFE studying Dance and Performance Studies. I have been dancing since I was 8 and always knew I wanted formal training in dance. I have found the course extremely beneficial and it has enhanced my knowledge of dance. I have found my tutors very helpful, willing to listen and happy to share their vast experience. Because the group is small the students can avail of a more personal approach to learning. I think this course is a great foundation for someone like me who wants to further her career in dance. I’ve been exposed to different styles of dance including ballet, jazz, commercial and Acro dance. The course not only offers dance education but also encompasses theatre studies which allows the student to have a wider experience which will hopefully greatly enhance employment opportunities in the future. I feel like I’ve made friends for life.

Media Relations. Solas Media Solutions My journalism course from KCFE placed me on a solid footing as I embarked on my media career. It was vital for me to have a clear understanding of legal and ethical requirements, as well as practical know-how for the media industry. From radio production to print, the skills I learned at KCFE gave me a foundation to build upon. I’ve had 14 years of success in media and have worked at both Kerry’s Eye (where I trained as a press photographer) and The Kerryman, as well as a three-year stint in the Cork Independent, a bold city paper and an agent of change in an evolving modern media landscape. I was also a regular contributor to radio news programming. I even had the courage to co-present a live current affairs programme on the community radio station Cork FM.

After moving to New Zealand in 2012, I spent almost five years working at leading media group NZME, where I worked as deputy editor and business editor of the Northern Advocate. At that daily newspaper I led a large team to win multiple awards, including Canon Newspaper of the Year. I now run my own media relations consultancy and coaching company - Solas Media Solutions - helping business owners and leaders to bag heaps of positive media exposure. To make it in media, you’ll need heaps of resilience, unquenchable ambition, the ability to form and maintain a valuable contact base and most of all, a solid foundation of skills and tools from a great course!

Gary Hewitt

Carers Graduate

I arrived at KCFE at one of the lowest points in my life. I’d been working in the transport industry for almost all of my career and the recession had all but destroyed my career and my self-esteem. It became clear to me that I was going to have to retrain. Many years ago, I acted as a mentor for young adults with intellectual disabilities, it was a really fulfilling time for me and it was suggested that I might once again find happiness in a similar role. With lots of encouragement from family and friends I contacted KCFE and enrolled on the QQI Level 5 Carers course. The first few weeks were a little overwhelming but before long I began to have the time of my life. With plenty of encouragement from KCFE staff and fellow students my journey into further education soon turned into one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. I had the honour to be

one of just ten students chosen to represent the college on the Erasmus programme and was lucky enough to travel to Denmark to complete my work experience. When I thought things couldn’t get any better, I was invited to attend the KCFE 2018 award ceremony during which I was presented with the Academic Award for the Carers class and the Mature Student Award for 2018. In such a short space of time, my life has transformed completely. Immediately after graduating from KCFE, I was offered a position with Bluebird Care and now have a job that I enjoy immensely. Thanks to the encouragement of the staff at KCFE and Bluebird Care’s supportive nature, I am now enrolled with Institute of Technology Tralee, where I am currently a first-year student studying Mental Health Nursing.

“In such a short space of time, my life has transformed completely.”

I completed the Pre-Nursing course at KCFE. Before I started I had studied Law in UL and had decided it was not for me. I was at a crossroads as to what career path to take. I wanted to pursue a career in Nursing but was afraid of committing to a further four years in college. I wanted to make a more informed decision and that’s what brought me to KCFE. The modules were varied and incorporated all the fundamentals of nursing. Work experience allowed me the opportunity to practice some of the clinical skills learned in the classroom whilst under

supervision. Teachers offered guidance and some of them sacrificed their own personal time to help students succeed. To anyone considering any type of nursing as a career I would definitely recommend doing the pre-nursing first to see if it is for you. There are great links with so many nursing degrees both in Ireland and England. I made some wonderful friends on the course who are now my colleagues. I went on to complete the degree and I am now a Psychiatric Nurse, permanently employed with the HSE in Kerry University Hospital.

Life as an Advanced Paramedic My name is Shane Buckley. I’m an Advanced Paramedic with the National Ambulance Service. I joined the Service as an Emergency Medical Technician in 2001. Probably the most common phrase I hear when people hear what I do is “ohhh I couldn’t do your job, the things ye must see”. Thankfully the percentage of calls we attend that are traumatic in nature is small enough and the training kicks in and you follow your processes and Clinical Practice Guidelines…. Having said that we have to be prepared to deal with most things, medical, trauma, mental health emergencies, respiratory, cardiac, maternity, paediatric, geriatric etc. and these calls come 24/7 days nights weekends, anniversaries, birthdays, Christmas and in the most unusual of places, planes, trains, boats, buildings, roof spaces, alleyways, parks, mountains. I’ve been very fortunate to date in that I’ve been able to make a difference for some people when they’ve needed it. I’ve watched

life come into and depart this world, I’ve brought people back. I’ve given pain relief and splinted broken bones. Sometimes the most you can do is offer an ear or a shoulder and sometimes that’s the most important part of what you can do. Be human. There have been many advancements in the Ambulance Service in my time, both in technology and in educational standards and internationally recognised awards. Currently UCC & UL offer BSc Paramedical Sciences and UCD School of Medicine is the awarding body for all direct entrants Diploma in Emergency Medical Science and Graduate Diploma in Emergency Medical Science through the National Ambulance Training College. Like every other profession, job, career, you’ll have good days and bad days but every day you’ll be going out to help.

“I’ve watched life come into and depart this world, I’ve brought people back.”

What I wanted for myself out of my

PLC was to grow, get experience, get a qualification and move onto third level. No doubt I achieved each goal. From my experience in KCFE I became more confident of my potential. I got hands on experience and absolutely adored every moment of it. I came out with a Level 5 qualification which got me into third level education. Being offered a place in UCC and LIT was really an amazing

feeling. I chose the Level 8 Social Care at Limerick Institute of Technology as I knew it was the more suitable for me and my goals. Looking forward now I want to finish out my 4 years in LIT and be able to go down the root of getting my masters in Play Therapy. I wouldn’t have the opportunity to do all this if it wasn’t for my PLC.

Darren Reidy

Applied Science Student Luckily I have always had a great passion for science and knew I wanted to pursue this field as a career. I didn’t feel ready for college so I deferred my place and looked at PLC’s. Through the Applied Science course KCFE has given me so much insight into the science industry. The teachers at the college have worked in laboratories and also have science teaching backgrounds so I am learning loads. They give good advice and support and go beyond to help students who need it. The college has a new state of the art science lab. Currently I’m doing the work experience part of the course at Southern Scientific based in Farranfore. I know this laboratory experience will help me right through third level. This work has put me in a position that allows me to be more confident when going to college and I have now built up links

with employers. The course has also taught me about lab practices, working environments, how to properly reference in assignments, job interviews and much more. For anyone who is doubting themselves because they don’t have a science subject, don’t feel intimated at all, this course ensures that everyone is on the same level from the start to the end. You’ll start from the basic principles of biology/chemistry. This course has prepared me well for college. I feel more prepared for the future. I will be taking up my place on the Level 8 Degree in Drug and Medicinal Product Analysis at LIT in September.

“I feel more prepared for the future.”

Veterinary Assisting Graduate In 2017 I was unsure which direction to take with my career. I had a Degree in Science and also ten years experience teaching dance and fitness. I always loved animals and thought it would be a great area to work in. I decided to upskill and found the Veterinary Assistants course at Kerry College for Further Education which allowed me to do both. The teachers at the college were very friendly and extremely supportive. It was a great environment to learn and I became a class representative and got

involved with the Students Council. While on Erasmus in Denmark, I was working with Hella at the Holbaek Naturskole. I worked at the park with the animals but also travelled to schools where Hella taught science to kids. This was something I loved to see and felt it would be an amazing job to have. Since graduating from KCFE I have been working with Designer Minds teaching STEM to kids in after schools clubs and summer camps. It’s a dream job and I’m so happy I got this opportunity.

The Veterinary Assisting course is a solid stepping stone for future progression. The course is ideal for people who would like to learn more about the welfare of animals and how to care for them. Whether you want to own a business, progress to higher education, update your skills or change career, it’s a fantastic all rounder. I’m forever grateful to KCFE and the lecturers there. I’m glad I chose my local college as it has broadened my knowledge and allowed me to have great experience working hands on with animals. I’ve made some great friends and contacts through my work placement and more importantly, I’ve made many memories.

“It has allowed me to have great experience working hands on with animals.”

I attended KCFE last year to give myself the best opportunity to consider different career paths. Leaving school I was unsure about what step to take next. It was, however, inevitable I would pursue a career with animals. The Veterinary Assisting course has a mix of practicals, field trips, work experience and theory. The modules cover many things; from how to care for an animal to how the animal performs, to communication and customer service skills. Since, completing Veterinary Assisting I have started an Agriculture Science course in Pallaskenry. I hope to

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS AND NUTRITION GRADUATE SUCCESS STORY

Kieran Donaghy

Gaelic footballer and basketball player I attended the CBS, Tralee for my secondary school education back in the day. I wasn’t very academic but I knew it was important to continue in education and I chose the PLC route. I chose KCFE as I could live at home and have no travel or accommodation costs. The Sport, Recreation and Exercise course was the obvious choice for me due to my huge interest in sport. The course gave me a great understanding of how the body works. I focused on aerobic endurance, muscular endurance and flexibility. It gave me an appreciation for stretching that has helped me throughout my sporting career. The facilities were wonderful and the teachers were great. Further Education is a great route for anyone and it has been a great stepping stone in my own career.

“The facilities were wonderful and the teachers were great.” GRADUATE SUCCESS STORY

Máire Twiss

Physiotherapy Assistant

103

My name is Máire Twiss and I completed the two year Sports Therapy course in KCFE, Tralee which has qualified me to work as a Physiotherapy Assistant. Being involved in sports from a young age and coming from a sporting family in Milltown, I was able to see the work of a physiotherapist during sporting events and knew it played an important role for an athlete’s fitness by preventing injury along with enhancing recovery. I wanted a practical hands-on course and the Sports Therapy course in KCFE ticked all the boxes for me. I have been happily employed as a Physiotherapy Assistant in a Physiotherapy Clinic in Tralee since completing my course. My job involves working with the Kerry Senior Ladies and also as a Masseuse with the All-Ireland winning Kerry Minor Boys. I find my job rewarding and enjoyable as I am helping patients get immediate relief from discomfort and pain.

“I find my job rewarding and enjoyable.”

Hotel and Catering Graduate I commenced the Level 5 Hotel and Catering course as a mature student. Having gone to the KCFE open day I got a good vibe from the place. I hadn’t been in a classroom for many years but I settled in after a while. The course was actually a lot more hands on that I thought which is exactly what you need for the hospitality sector. During the year the class got involved in events such as bake sales, Christmas catering events etc. and all these helped me feel like I was progressing nicely as the skills I developed on the course were being put into use. Work experience was great. The college invests time into getting students to where they want to go. They did everything to accommodate classmates who had issues or needed help. They were always out to make sure you achieved your best. I was delighted to get Student of the Year Award at the Academic Awards ceremony at the end of the year. Now I am studying for a BA Honours in Event Management. I would never have considered this without input and advice from my KCFE course co-ordinator.

“The skills I developed on the course were being put into use.”

Just Cooking. Firies, Co. Kerry. I started my career as a chef in 1986, studying at Harlow Technical College. Before opening my own cookery school I worked all over the world in some of the most prestigious hotels and restaurants, including the Ritz in London, The Merrion hotel in Dublin, as well as the QE2 cruise liner.

is different and where you get to learn from the best. With the current shortage of Chefs worldwide you will certainly never be without a job and the industry is changing for the better with regards to working hours and pay. I have certainly never had a day that I didn’t want to get up and go to work and do what I love.

“The opportunities open to chefs to work worldwide are endless.”

Graduate of Professional Cookery Carving out a career in professional cookery was a natural choice for me as I love spending time in the kitchen cooking up tasty food for family and friends. The Professional Cookery course is a great starting point because it assumes nothing and you start with the basics and work your way up. By the end of the year you are work ready. Culinary skills are the main focus. I completed the work experience with Croí Restaurant which was the start of something great for me. They are great employers. I was voted in to compete in the Best Young Chef in Ireland competition. Two judges arrived from YES Chef and they assessed me. I came top six in Ireland thanks to the skills I got from KCFE. I am now in IT Tralee studying Level 6

Culinary Skills and have my parttime job with Croí which wouldn’t be possible without the KCFE Level 5 qualification. Through KCFE I have met like-minded people, made solid friends and I am content in life. It has been a life changing experience for me.

“I came top six in Ireland thanks to the skills I got from KCFE.”
