Jennifer Ring

Graduate of Beauty Therapy Course I personally loved the time I spent in KCFE. It was the start of a fantastic career preparing me well for my future years working in both beauty salons and spas. It boosted my confidence tremendously because as a beauty student I got to work in the college beauty salon and offer services to real clients. It didn’t just teach me the skills and knowledge of practical beauty, it also prepared me for managing appointments, dealing with complaints, working as a team, working under pressure and dealing with the day to day running of a business. It enabled me to gain experience also as a makeup artist in a salon in Templeglantine and to work part time in Limerick City as a spa therapist.

Estee Lauder and Stilla. I love making people feel and look amazing. I decided to go on and do hairdressing specialising in upstyles so now I combine the two aspects of hair and beauty in my business. Afterwards, I progressed and completed a teacher training degree in Dublin and am now a fully qualified Makeup Artistry and Hair Design Tutor. I now provide day courses in Makeup Artistry, as well as managing two cosmetics counters and working as a free-lance makeup artist and hair stylist. I also engage with other makeup artists and students on my own public Instagram helping those who need advice and it honestly is an amazing platform to have. KCFE was the start of a very enjoyable career and I am delighted to recommend the college.

“I love making people feel and look amazing.”

After graduating I explored my creative streak in makeup artistry and worked in many cosmetic counters including Inglot, Benefit,

“I am constantly meeting young boys and girls when at home in Kerry with dreams to be designers just like me. Education is their gateway, and to have that gateway opened in Kerry would be a marvellous opportunity. Global fashion is a multi-billion euro industry and there are many roads to a fashion career. This is a prime time to take advantage of a growing industry, with e-commerce out-pacing brick and mortar retailers, creating the same variety of opportunities for an e-fashion retailer or designer in Dingle as one in Shanghai.” Don O’Neill is creative director of THEIA, an evening-wear company based in New York City. He is from Ballyheigue in County Kerry and has designed evening wear for celebrities worldwide.

Graduate of Secretarial Studies (Medical) Everyone has their own reasons for returning to education but mine was simply to better myself and gain a qualification that would put an end to me having to work unsociable hours. I had gone directly into UCC after my own Leaving Cert but had dropped out of that Honours Degree course as it just wasn’t the course for me. I went straight to work and while returning to college was always in the back of my mind as each year passed my confidence diminished and doubts crept in.

me up with invaluable skills which made me employable. I completed a very worthwhile work experience placement with the Health Services Executive (HSE). I graduated from the course with distinctions. Following an interview with Kerry University Hospital I secured a full time Clerical Officer position immediately after finishing the course. Little did I know within a year of making the decision to return to education at KCFE that I would be in the position I am today. My only regret is that I didn’t have the courage to study on this programme sooner. My quality of life has greatly improved as a result of my change of career. I am no longer working unsociable hours and have more time to dedicate to my family. It’s never too late to go back to education. You will find a very supportive environment at KCFE.

“I began to feel more optimistic and excited about my future.”

I eventually explored my options and secured a place on the QQI Level 5 Medical Secretarial Course in KCFE. Graduate of Criminology, UCC Following my Leaving Certificate, I really wasn’t sure which road to go down; so I enrolled on a Post Leaving Certificate Programme (PLC) at Kerry College of Further Education. As part of the programme, I studied a module on Criminology and having watched every episode of CSI Miami and CSI New York (to my mother’s disdain!), I found the subject fascinating. As a result of this experience, I applied to study on a Degree in Criminology in UCC. This was particularly exciting because, at that time, this was the first Undergraduate Criminology Programme in the history of the State in Ireland. Although I found studying for a level eight academic

degree quite challenging at times, the assignments and the subjects I studied as part of my Post Leaving Certificate Programme prepared me well for the challenging times ahead - especially in relation to referencing and academic writing. Furthermore, I made lifelong friends while doing the PLC, including a classmate who ended up being a housemate while we both attended UCC.

Breandán Whelan

Graduate of Special Needs Assisting Course

I came to KCFE to do the Special Needs Assisting course as a mature student having had experience of a variety of other careers prior to this decision. I always had an interest in education having come from a family where both my brother and sister are primary teachers. I previously held a Degree in Strength and Conditioning and had my own business but after several successful years at it I felt that the time had come for a change. The transition from work to education went pretty smoothly. I liked the structured classes and a few weeks into the course I had built up a

rapport with both teachers and fellow students. I found the course enjoyable with a good mix of practical and theory. I particularly enjoyed the psychology. I completed my work experience in the Autism Unit at Colaiste Ide agus Iosef in Abbeyfeale. It’s only when you start working that you realise what’s involved and whether you are cut out for it and that is a major strength of PLC courses as you get to dive into the work environment. I did an interview with Kerry ETB shortly after completing the course and secured permanent employment as a Special Needs Assistant. I am currently based in Killorglin Community College and am enjoying a challenging and rewarding career. Education is for everyone and you may have to try a few careers before you find what makes you happy but it is worth it. I am grateful for the opportunity to do the course at KCFE as without it I wouldn’t be an SNA today.

“I am enjoying a challenging and rewarding career.”

As a direct result of successfully completing the Level 5 Childcare course I am now employed with Cre8tive Corner Childcare Facility in Tralee. I have always known that I would pursue a career in this area as I have from a young age been drawn to children and fascinated by the way they learn and interact with others. I now work with children from the ages of six months to four years.

Graduate of Childcare Course

For me the year at KCFE really changed my life. Put simply it was everything I needed to get me ready for the workplace. The course was very interesting. I learned so much and my interest was captured from day one. The college supported me and even though I have been living in Ireland for many years now I did need a little extra support with my written English and the college staff were always helpful in that respect. Looking

back the year matured me a lot and I am a very different person now to when I left secondary school. So if you are looking at your options for future study you will find that KCFE has lots to offer. It is an amazing choice of college. My message to school leavers is to concentrate on your strengths and don’t dwell too much on the rest. If you focus on what you would like to do you will be able to make a successful career.

Graduate of Level 6 Advanced Disability Studies with Special Needs I came to KCFE as a mature student and initially started out on the Level 5 Childcare course. I worried about whether I would be able to juggle college work with the demands of parenthood but KCFE made the experience very manageable. Teachers were very approachable and understanding. I found a helpful and welcoming environment. I cannot express just how much I enjoyed my time there. From the different societies, groups and activities in the college I have made friends, achieved my goal and passion for working with children. Course wise the workshops from Childcare practitioners were delivered with passion, commitment and through this and the fantastic KCFE teachers, it made me realise the difference I could make in a child’s life and as a result I decided to

stay for a second year doing the Level 6 Advanced Disability Studies with Special Needs. I did my work experience with Campus Kids, Tralee and through this I secured full time employment as a Key Worker with Campus Kids. I had a great experience. They welcomed me on placement and again afterwards as an employee. My memories of KCFE are nothing but positive. Going forward my advice to you all is to consider KCFE on your journey towards the career of your choice. I am so grateful for opportunities the staff and management of KCFE have given me and cannot recommend this college enough.

Graduate of Childcare Course After completing my level 5 Childcare course I promptly secured employment in a Community Childcare facility in Kerry as a Pre-School/Montessori Teacher. Childcare is generally broken to wobblers, toddlers and progresses to preschool. It is now a legal requirement that a person working in the childcare sector must have a minimum of QQI level 5, clear Gardaí vetting and a valid first aid certificate – and undertaking the course in KCFE ensured I met all these requirements. I have now worked with children for the past 2 years and can tell you that I love my job and all the associated challenges that go along with it. Every day presents a different challenge and if anything I am more passionate about it now than I ever was.

Graduate of Special Needs Assisting Course I found going back to education after many years challenging and was dreading what the year would bring for a mature student. However, through the support and help of my teacher, my experience was completely enjoyable. Getting feedback on my assignments helped me immensely as I knew then I was on the right track. Any issues or problems I encountered on the course the teacher didn’t hesitate in finding a way to resolve the problem. I felt I could speak to the teacher about any

problems raised in the class and I always received help. I have gained confidence in myself and managed to secure work as a Special Needs Assistant in Moyderwell

Graduate of Furniture Making and Restoration As a mature student I made the decision to return to education to explore an interest in carpentry. I had a fantastic year at Kerry College of Further Education and this was all down to the positivity that echoes around the college corridors.

some great friends in KCFE, the majority of whom I am still very good friends with. KCFE has a personal interest in all its students that I found remarkable. The lecturers on my course were diligent, passionate, practical and enthusiastic about their subjects and extremely generous with their time. My experience in KCFE has given me the courage and motivation to pursue my goals not only in education but in life also. I highly recommend the furniture making course in KCFE for anyone interested in a career in the Furniture or the Carpentry industry. I am thrilled to have secured a place in University Limerick to study on the Level 8 Bachelor of Technology (Education) in Materials & Architectural Technology.

The teachers on the Furniture Making and Restoration Level 6 course are second to none and do everything in their power to facilitate, encourage and further your learning. I am currently completing a Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering having successfully secured all distinctions on the Level 5 Engineering course at KCFE. I always had an interest in this career area. I did a very good leaving cert and decided that I would test out the waters with a PLC to see if I was really suited to it. I was only 16 doing my leaving cert so I am glad I chose to do it before third level. I went from an all-girls school into a predominantly male engineering course and that took a bit of getting used to but everyone was so nice and respectful to me. It was a great course giving everyone a broad base for lots of different kinds of

engineering so by the end of the year I knew the area I would like to concentrate on. I did a great work experience placement with an engineering company, Eamonn Costello Ltd. On that placement I was exposed to CAD, was on site helping engineers and generally getting a feel for this type of work. Overall I was delighted with the course and the college. I was sad leaving it behind because I had so many friends made and it was so homely. PLCs are great and I would recommend them to anyone.

Chris Kelliher

Music Student at KCFE I am delighted to be a member of the first Music Performance class at Kerry College of Further Education. While the course is new to the college it is very well run and for me the experience has been a very pleasant one. Growing up I always had an interest in music. I was lead guitarist in a band as a teenager and later in life when I lived in New York I was lucky enough to write and perform original material as part of a duo. No matter where I went music was with me and part of me. When I saw the music course advertised locally it just felt right. Like any mature student a little part of me wondered whether I would fit back into the classroom but there was no need to worry. I got on just fine and there were lots of mature students at KCFE. My experience on the course has been amazing. Everyone on the course shares a common interest and we connect through music. When I expressed an interest in music therapy as a possible

future career the course co-ordinator was on the case and helped secure my work experience placement with Ruti Lachs in Cork. The work involves using music as a tool of expression and to help individuals improve their emotional, physical and mental health. I will be working in different environments from schools to care facilities etc. It will be an enlightening experience no doubt. The course coordinator has been very helpful and supportive throughout the year. During the year I have been surrounded by enthusiastic individuals which has made my time at KCFE most enjoyable. I have always known I wanted to put all my energy into music and the college has given me a great opportunity to do just that. I am now considering pursuing further studies in music.

“I have always known I wanted to put all my energy into music.”

GRADUATE SUCCESS STORY

Graduate of Multimedia with Graphic Design

Pursing the Multimedia with Graphic Design course at KCFE was a natural step for me after the Leaving Cert. I had during my teenage years enjoyed creating my own graphics. During secondary school I used Solid Works in DCG class and found it incredibly interesting. I guess the interest in multimedia had been there for a while. The course at KCFE was very hands on and fostered creativity. It was fun. Perhaps the most interesting of all aspects for me was the digital photography element of the course. I completed my work experience with Listowel based Brendan Landy Photographer. My knowledge of Photoshop from the multimedia course stood to me during this placement. It also provided an insight into other industry software.

If you require any assistance telephone 066 7121741 or email info@kerryfe.ie

People choose courses for many reasons hoping to find one that holds their interest and enabling them to forge successful careers. As a direct result of doing the Multimedia course at KCFE I am currently a free-lance photographer. I also secured my place on the Level 8 Degree in Interactive Digital Media at LIT. I think I would be like a fish out of water in third level if I hadn’t completed the multimedia course beforehand. I am really happy and I love what I am doing.

Christine Allen Journalism Graduate

My journalism course from KCFE placed me on a solid footing as I embarked on my media career. It was vital for me to have a clear understanding of legal and ethical requirements, as well as practical know-how for the media industry. From radio production to print, the skills I learned at KCFE gave me a foundation to build upon. I’ve had 14 years of success in media and have worked at both Kerry’s Eye (where I trained as a press photographer) and The Kerryman, as well as a three-year stint in the Cork Independent, a bold city paper and an agent of change in an evolving modern media landscape. I was also a regular contributor to radio news programming. I even had the courage to co-present a live current affairs programme on the community radio station Cork FM.

After moving to New Zealand in 2012, I spent almost five years working at leading media group NZME, where I worked as deputy editor and business editor of the Northern Advocate. At that daily newspaper I led a large team to win multiple awards, including Canon Newspaper of the Year. I now run my own media relations consultancy and coaching company - Solas Media Solutions - helping business owners and leaders to bag heaps of positive media exposure. To make it in media, you’ll need heaps of resilience, unquenchable ambition, the ability to form and maintain a valuable contact base and most of all, a solid foundation of skills and tools from a great course!

“The skills I learned at KCFE gave me a foundation to build upon.”

Graduate of Art, Craft & Design I am a contemporary stained glass artist and public art creator, creating original artworks in my own design. I work full time on public and private commissions; plus private work for exhibitions. I have a very successful career in creative arts and my work has been featured on both regional and national media including radio, print and television. I am lucky enough to have my work in public and private collections all over the world. I always knew I wanted to go to Art College and I was very focused on doing the best portfolio I could to get there…This led me on to undertake a level 5 Post Leaving Certificate Course in Kerry College of Further Education enabling me to build a very solid foundation for an art career.

Graduate of Art, Craft and Design Course If I had realised the potential of doing a PLC it would have taken so much pressure off me during my Leaving Cert year. I am now doing a Level 8 Art and Design Degree in Limerick School of Art and Design having spent a year in KCFE building up my art portfolio as well as exploring Photoshop, Illustrator and Photography. I had a great time in the college. It was so different to the leaving cert because I was immersed in what I enjoy doing. I had all day every day to concentrate on art and creativity. There was a freedom like I had never felt before. I played in goals for the college soccer team. The whole experience that year was so positive. I did my placement with John Hurley Art Gallery in Tralee. The year flew by too fast. The teachers I had at KCFE were inspirational and that has made a very real difference in my life.

“I had all day every day to concentrate on art and creativity.”

Applied Social Studies with Psychology Graduate When I think about my experience on the Applied Social Studies with Psychology course at Kerry College of Further Education it genuinely only brings back great memories. From my one-year involvement there I took so much including the friendships and strong relationships with lectures and staff, the knowledge that I continue to use in University that I am very grateful for and last but not least the opportunity it gave to me and all my class mates to get to where we are today. PLC is the way to go; you make new friends and get used to college life and it matures you in a special way. Furthermore, it allows you to gain a deeper knowledge of the line of work you are interested in. To this day I still look back at my PLC notes! The staff at KCFE are always there for you even when you have long gone and that is something that I will always appreciate. I learned a lot about myself during that year. It allowed me to really think and decide what

it is I wanted to start studying in University. Of course, it also is a gateway into whatever course or college you are interested in and in my opinion coming out with a foundation in the subject you are interested in along with a Level 5 qualification is a lot more useful than repeating your leaving cert and not being guaranteed your course. To conclude it was one of the greatest years I have had in education and I’ll always be very grateful for the continuing support from everyone involved in KCFE. In my opinion without a shadow of a doubt, a PLC is the best stepping stone to success. I am very honoured to be a graduate of the college and to be happy having progressed to UCC where I am studying a Degree in Sociology and Psychology.

“It was one of the greatest years I have had in education.”

Carers (Health Care Assistant) Course Graduate

My decision to do the QQI Level 5 Carers course at KCFE worked out better than I could ever imagine. I always knew I wanted to be in a caring profession and this course assisted in developing in me the key skills essential for such a career. The course was delivered by teachers who were also qualified and experienced nurses. I gained my work experience in Ashborough Lodge Nursing Home in Miltown. After qualifying in Tralee I went on to complete the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course in Cork. I joined the Ambulance Service with the HSE Tralee and I am employed currently as an EMT. This role involves me doing non-emergency transfers of patients. My education and training has not stopped

there though. I have completed a Level 7 Degree in Occupational Health and Safety. I am currently almost finished the Diploma in Pre-Hospital Emergency Care through UCD. This will qualify me as a paramedic which is a step senior with more responsibility than my current role in the Ambulance Service. The time I spent in KCFE was hugely beneficial to me. It opened up doors to employment. I would not be where I am today without taking that first step in the doors of KCFE and so I would recommend the experience to both school leavers and adult learners.

Graduate of Level 5 Nursing Studies After completing my Leaving Cert in Abbeyfeale I applied for the PLC course in Pre-Nursing Studies at KCFE where I started to explore the world of nursing as a career. It was a wise decision as by the end of the year I was confident that Nursing would suit me and that I had what it would take to see me through a Degree. I found my time in Tralee hugely beneficial. The modules I completed gave an insight into what nursing would be like. It contained both theory and practical and I developed skills such as first aid, manual handling and basic nursing skills. The teachers were determined for students to succeed and provided great support and assistance along the way. During the year I completed several assignments which is great preparation for college as assignment work is a huge part of third level education. My work experience was completed in Kilcara Nursing Home, Duagh.

During my time in KCFE I re-applied to CAO this time using the QQI Level 5 points system. I achieved distinction grades and was lucky enough to secure a place on the BSc Degree in General Nursing in Dublin City University. I am currently in my third year of study. If you are considering nursing know that it will bring with it a lot of responsibility. The training is intense so you need to be sure before you start that it’s right for you. By doing the PLC you will get that chance before you sign up for a four year degree. A nursing career is one that allows you to make a real difference in people’s lives, it will be enjoyable, challenging, fascinating and rewarding. I am delighted to be able to highly recommend KCFE to school leavers and those considering returning to education as adults.

“A nursing career is one that allows you to make a real difference in people’s lives.”

Vanessa Williams

Veterinary Assisting Graduate My name is Vanessa Williams and I am currently in my first year Veterinary Nursing Honours Degree at UCD. This would not have been possible if I had not completed a QQI Level 5 Veterinary Assisting course at KCFE. As a mature student I was very apprehensive about returning back to education but it is by far the best decision I have ever made. The course at KCFE not only enabled me to get my foot in the door to a very sought after University, but it also gave me a strong foundation of knowledge in what is expected of you in the veterinary profession, this being mainly down to actually being taught by a veterinary surgeon in three of the modules which is extremely rare and so beneficial. I felt very lucky.

Since starting at UCD I also feel that I am at a level playing field, if not ahead of the game due to the knowledge I have gained and it has prepared me for so many aspects of University life in regards to confidence, time management and trying to deliver a high level of quality work that is expected of you. The experience, the support and guidance from all the staff at KCFE has been invaluable. If you have a passion for animals and are thinking of applying for this course I urge you not to hesitate, you will not regret that decision. Whether you want to be a veterinary assistant or use it as a stepping stone for something else in the animal industry, or even if you’re picking a completely different course, you will have an amazing, rewarding experience at KCFE.

“It has prepared me for so many aspects of University life.”

Aisling Van Der Velde Veterinary Assisting Graduate

I applied to the KCFE as a mature student with a view to changing my career. I took up the Veterinary Assisting Level 5 course and that was the key to fulfilling my goal. This was the perfect course for me as I have always had a love of animals and biological science. For me going back to education was a challenge having been out in the workforce for quite a number of years. There were lots of assignments to do and I devoted time to study outside of class time often staying on in the evenings to avail of the college resources. I found the most valuable aspect of the course to be the work experience programme. It allowed me the chance to really get to know the sector and gave me a realistic idea of all that was involved in working as a veterinary assistant. I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to complete my work experience at Cú

Cullian Veterinary Hospital in Tralee. Not only was I able to apply my new found skills to the work experience I was also gaining invaluable knowledge while there. I was fortunate enough to be offered employment as Veterinary Assistant/ Receptionist at the animal hospital. I really feel the skills I gained at KCFE and the support I got from my lecturers helped give me the confidence to gain this employment. All in all my experience at the college was very rewarding and I am grateful for the experience.

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS AND NUTRITION GRADUATE SUCCESS STORY

Michael Dillon

Sport and Recreation Graduate As a leaving cert student I did not foresee myself owning my own business. It was the PLC in Sport and Recreation at KCFE that got me off to a good start career wise. I enjoyed the experience immensely and it was there I realised that once you are prepared to work hard even though you may not be the most academic you have every chance of success. The value of doing the PLC really showed through when I progressed to third level. It had set me up well for the first year of college and it had given me the foundations of assignment writing, referencing and study skills. I really wanted to succeed and I availed of every support that was given to me in KCFE. After graduating from KCFE I progressed to third level and completed an honours Degree in Health and Leisure. I now own my own business, Kinetic Health and Fitness based in Monavalley, Tralee. I found my passion at KCFE and followed it through. KCFE played a key part in setting a solid foundation for the career that I have today.

Kieran O’Donoghue

Student of Coaching and Sports Development

95

I’m Kieran O’Donoghue from Cordal. I did the Coaching and Sports Development course in KCFE in 2017/18. This included many different modules such as Gaelic Football Coaching, Video Analysis, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Nutrition, Sports Anatomy and Exercise and Fitness. It was a very varied and interesting course and it was very enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed the Gaelic football coaching with Jack O’Connor and learned a lot from him. We had a Gaelic football team in the college which competed in the Higher Education League and Championship. That was very enjoyable also and we had a very good team. Overall I feel the course has improved my confidence and has given me renewed interest in pursuing a career in sports coaching in the future.

Thank you to Benner’s Hotel Tralee for jersey sponsorship.

D E PA RT M E N T O F TO U R I S M A N D H O S P I TA L I T Y GRADUATE SUCCESS STORY

Emma O’Connor

Professional Cookery Graduate I graduated from the Professional Cookery course at KCFE and am now in Cork Institute of Technology studying the B.Bus Degree in Culinary Arts. At KCFE I enjoyed a very practical course. I cooked in the Bord Fáilte approved industrial catering kitchen so from day one I experienced what life in the hospitality industry is like. We worked closely with the Hotel and Catering students and thereby left the course as team players having an aerial view of what it takes not only to be a good cook but also the key attributes necessary to work successfully with others. I also completed work experience in French Bakery Petit Delice in Killarney.

I would advise everyone to consider going to this college. You will meet new friends with common interests and you will be inspired by the dedicated teachers who want you to do well. I’m glad I chose PLC. It’s what you choose to do after the leaving cert that counts. My mom also did a PLC in KCFE and she is now an SNA in Moyderwell Primary School. She was an inspiration to me and that’s just one of the reasons I went to KCFE.

“From day one I experienced what life in the hospitality industry is like.”

STUDENT STORY

Simon Kerrisk

Tourism with Business Student I am a Tourism with Business Studies Student at KCFE and enjoying the experience. The college itself has a large number of students. It is vibrant with lots of opportunities to get involved such as clubs, societies and college teams.

A year in PLC is of immense value to anyone. I had previously left a third level degree and in hindsight if I had gone and done a PLC first I would be in a much better position now. A PLC can help you get used of college life and bridges the gap between secondary school and third level. I have found myself in a very

friendly environment at KCFE with teachers being particularly good to me and very understanding and helpful with assignments. There is a positive atmosphere in the college and you know you are in safe hands if you ask for help. I like the email system of corresponding with students. With regard to the course itself I know it is a good foundation for employment. Tourism is especially important here in Kerry and there are plenty of opportunities and variety when it comes to choosing your work experience. There is also an opportunity for some students to do their work experience abroad through the Erasmus scheme. I am happy to recommend the college to anyone as it will benefit you in many ways both personally and in your future career.
