Greetings from Michael McKenzie Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board

In the 2011 budget deliberations, Vaughan Public Libraries was awarded funds to construct a library as an addition to the North Thornhill Community Centre.

The Request for Proposal (RFP) was released November 2011 inviting bids from architect contractor teams to design and build this library. Bids from ten proponents were evaluated and three were identified and prequalified to advance to stage two of the competition.

All three submitted proposals that far exceeded the approved budget and in July 2012, stage two of the RFP competition was cancelled. The scope of the project was then modified and the three prequalified bidders were invited to submit revised proposals to a new RFP. Only two of the three prequalified bidders submitted proposals.

Unfortunately, neither were compliant, and the bidding process was cancelled.

What this all means is that the building of a library in the North Thornhill Community Centre has been delayed from the original estimates we provided.

On behalf of the VPL Board I would like to apologize to the residents of Vaughan for the delay. The Board remains committed to building a library in the North Thornhill Community Centre and ensuring we are responsible in the spending of the resources we have been entrusted with. We will continue to work with the City to move the development of the North Thornhill Library forward and to provide the Citizens of Vaughan with many more welcoming destinations that educate, excite and empower our community.

LANGUAGE LINE SERVICES VPL now provides Language Line Services, an over-the-phone language interpretation system that offers verbal translation in over 175 languages.

Available in-person and over-the-phone at all seven libraries, this service uses English-speaking operators who will interpret your message and tell library staff your needs so that we can help you. We’re happy to say we can now communicate with you in the language that you prefer...your own!

Make the Most of Your Membership Get a Library Card. It’s free!

With a library card you have free access to books, movies, magazines, music, databases, programs, events, resources and more at all seven branches of Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) and online at www.vaughanpl.info!

Visitors You don’t have to have a library card to consult library staff or use the print collections on site. If you wish to use the library’s electronic resources, just show staff your identification at the Service Desk.

Don’t have a library card? If you live, work, go to school full-time or own property in the City of Vaughan, you can get a free library card. Join VPL in person or online—just show identification that has your address, registration or proof of employment in Vaughan on it.

Library Services - in person, online or on the phone All branches have materials for reference and loan. The most comprehensive reference collections are held at Bathurst Clark Resource Library and Pierre Berton Resource Library.

Children can get their own library cards.

If they are 13 years old or under, they just need their parent or guardian to sign for their library card.

Teen Awards 2012 VPL’s Teen Awards celebration, sponsored by PowerStream Inc., on October 24, 2012 at the City Playhouse Theatre honoured the top reader from the Teen Summer Reading Challenge (TSRC), the winners of the Early Harvest Competition and over 500 of the teens that volunteered at VPL during the year. Lisa Chang read a total of 109,615 pages as part of the TSRC and contributed to Vaughan teens surpassing the goal of reading one million pages last summer.

The Early Harvest Competition winners were selected based on their talent in sketching, photography, writing and video categories by judges Jennifer Harrison, Deborah Kerbel, Kean Soo, Mirella Tersigni, David West and Elana Wolff. Musical performances by Alyssa McDonald and Maria & Michael Rossi rounded out the evening.

During the celebration teens were presented with certificates and prizes. Afterwards guests had the opportunity to mix and mingle while viewing the work of Early Harvest Competition finalists, which you can check out in the 2012 Early Harvest magazine available in your library and online. In March, watch for news on the 2013 Early Harvest Competition on VPL’s official social media pages. Entry forms will be available at www.vaughanpl.info.
