ANTHONY Head Coach

CA P OTO S TO A four-time Blues team captain and two-time all-Canadian, Anthony Capotosto joined the Blues men’s soccer program as head coach in 2007 after two years as an assistant to Carmine Isacco. Capotosto was an assistant coach to the 1998 men’s soccer Blues and after graduation also served on the Blues women’s soccer staff in 2003. He rejoined the men’s staff in 2005, and has helped guide the team to berths in five of the past seven CIS championship tournaments. An OUA all-star defender in all five of his seasons with the Blues (1997, 1999-2002), Capotosto was named a first team all-Canadian in 2000 and 2001. He also claimed OUA East MVP honours in 2000 and 2001, and in his final playing season captained the Blues to the 2002 OUA title. Capotosto holds a Canadian National ‘B’ coaching licence and United States Soccer Federation National ‘C’ and ‘Y’ licences. In the spring of 2008, Anthony travelled to England for a 10-day coaching apprenticeship with Ipswich Town Football Club of the English First Division. Following that, he served as an assistant coach with the Italia Shooters of the Canadian Soccer League for the duration of the summer.

Varsity Blues men’s soccer team captain Darragh McGee earned his second consecutive MVP nod as the OUA announced major award winners and all-stars on Friday, October 27. A native of Donegal, Ireland, McGee tallied six goals in leading the No. 8 Varsity Blues to a 10-2-2 regular season record in 2011. He led a defensive unit that allowed just nine goals against all year. McGee also earns his second OUA all-star recognition in as many years. Sophomore defender Nicolas Girard was named the OUA East community service award winner. The Toronto native is in his second year of a Master’s of teaching program and volunteers as a coach at several youth level clubs including the North Toronto Soccer Club and International Alliance Soccer Academy. The Blues also boast four other all-stars. 2010 OUA rookie of the year Ezequiel Lubocki, Blues leading scorer Mario Kovacevic and fifth-year defender Scott Nesbitt all earn first team honours, while veteran midfielder Dylan Bams picked up his third consecutive all-star nod on the second team this season.

The No. 8 Toronto Varsity Blues dropped a 3-1 decision to the McMaster Marauders in the OUA men’s soccer goldmedal match on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 6) at Carleton University. The two teams qualified for the 2011 CIS championship at the University of Victoria next week (Nov. 10-13) with their respective semi-final victories yesterday. This will be Toronto’s third consecutive and sixth national championship appearance in the past 10 years. Toronto and McMaster had met only once before in an OUA gold-medal match, when the Marauders defeated the Blues 1-0 in penalty kicks on Toronto turf in 2009. The Blues, who were defending champions coming into today’s game, also won their title with a 1-0 victory in penalty kicks over the York Lions in 2010. The Marauders controlled the play throughout the first half and opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a goal from second-year striker Paterson Farrell (Oakville, Ont.) off a corner kick. Blues midfielder Dylan Bams had a solid chance to even the score just before the half. The Fanny Bay, B.C., native caught Marauders goalkeeper Angelo Cavalluzzo (Hamilton, Ont.) out of the net but defender Robert Scholosser came sprinting in to clear the ball out of harms way. McMaster held a 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes of action.

SOCCER

The OUA defending champion Blues had trouble penetrating Marauders territory early in the second half until the 53rd minute when second-year midfielder Ezequiel Lubocki of Winnipeg sent a shot just over the cross bar from 20 yards out to keep Cavalluzzo on his toes. The Marauders extended their lead in the 59th minute as rookie midfielder Brandon Gutierrez of Brampton, Ont., jumped on a rebound off the back post to put McMaster up 2-0. Blues leading scorer Mario Kovacevic of Woodbridge, Ont., cut the lead to one in the 67th minute, sending a shot from 12 yards out into the bottom right corner of the net off a corner kick opportunity. Kovacevic almost evened the score in the 75th minute. After Geoffrey Borgmann was taken down, the Blues were awarded a free kick in front of the Marauders net. The second-year striker set the ball through traffic but Cavalluzzo dove to make the last-second stop and maintain the one-gaol lead. Toronto poured on the pressure in the final 10 minutes and despite a few corner kick opportunities, were not able to find the back again. Farrell would add his second of the game in extra time and the final whistle blew in a 3-1 favour of the Marauders.

The University of Toronto men’s soccer program continues to be one of the best in the nation and upholds a tradition of success and accomplishment that stretches back 130 years. Organized soccer was first introduced to the U of T campus in 1876, when the University of Toronto Football Club abandoned a traditional local set of football rules in favour of the thennovel “Association game.” The current team was established in 1879, making it one of the oldest in North America. The Blues dominated the Ontario-Quebec interuniversity league for much of the 20th century, capturing 43 league titles between 1904 and 1968, including 17 championships in the 1950s and 60s. This tradition of excellence continues to the present day. For the past two decades, the U of T men’s soccer team has been consistently ranked in the top 10 in the country and has reached the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships 12 times since 1986, bringing home the national title in 1988 and a silver medal in 2005. Varsity Blues soccer also regularly attracts some of the top high school student-athletes from Ontario and across the country. In 1989 the entire Varsity Blues squad represented Canada at the World University Championship and captured the silver medal. Since 1979, 43 Varsity Blues have been named CIS all-Canadians, including Mark Purdy, Peter Sarantopoulos, Joe Demiglio and Mike Bialy.

VARSITY BLUES – 1988 CIAU CHAMPIONS

In 1988, the Varsity Blues men’s soccer team claimed the nation’s top prize, a CIAU championship, for the first time in U of T history. The Blues wrapped up the regular season schedule with a near perfect 15-1-1 record, scoring 42 goals and allowing just 12. In the post-season, U of T opened their title run with a 1-0 penalty kick victory over Carleton before slipping past Queen’s 4-2 in the provincial semifinals and shutting out Western 2-0 to claim the OUAA crown. At the national championship, the Blues defeated number-one ranked Alberta (2-1) with goals from Pat Cubellis

18

and George Argyropoulos. And in the final, Cubellis notched the game’s only marker in a 1-0 victory over McGill. The team then capped off their storybook season at the World University Soccer Championship in Arizona, where they represented Canada and earned a silver medal. The success of this squad, which was led by 1988 OUAA coach of the year Jim Lefkos, can be attributed to their tremendous depth, determination and incredible team chemistry. Seven Varsity Blues were named OUAA all-stars, with Cubellis and Coz Zambazis also garnering all-Canadian honours.

The 1988-89 championship team included Terry Apostolou (Manager), George Argyropoulos, Chris Collie, David Collie, Pat Cubellis, John Diniz, Patrick Fancott, John Fitzgerald, Guido Geisler, Domenic Ientile, Alan Kennedy, Ben Kwak, Tom Lazarou, Rod MacGregor, (therapist) Dino Mastrogianis, William Murray, Robert Pacas, Bill Papaconstantinou, Nino Perrotta, Peter Sarantopoulos, Tony Tata, Tom Tsilfidis, Mark Varkul, Coz Zambazis and head coach Jim Lefkos.
