Cake & Catwalk Age is just a number!

It’s all about the dungarees this summer. Thank you darling Meryl who made it ok for women of a certain age to pull the whole boohoo, little bit country and slightly sexy look off. To be fair I had them in last year and did give them a go but chickened out. Perhaps they were the wrong shape or colour but this year we have extended our range and styles and hurrah I have found a grey pair, (no change there for me) with a nice white T. I have managed to pull it off. Again with caution ladies! If you are extra long in the body it’s tough to find a pair that don’t cut you up the middle and if you are bigger busted they do look more Dolly than Meryl. With this not so great weather we have not been able to slip into those cool linen dresses without a vest so the linen trousers or dungarees have been a good alternative. I have got several options in the shop this season, so pop in and have a try. LYNN TURNER

Each Diamond in the 1888 collection is handpicked and carefully selected by the fifth generation of our family business. This ensures the best quality for the best possible price. Each selected diamond is then independently certificated. Using the finest precious metals our skilled craftsmen in Central Birmingham then make the ring by hand and set the stunning diamond to create the perfect ring. The finished ring is then meticulously inspected once more as only the most brilliant diamond in the most perfect setting will feature in the 1888 collection.

A traditional, family run jeweller that’s looking ahead to the future

OU may have noticed that a new jeweller, T.H. Baker opened in Ipswich’s Tavern Street in October last year. But the company is not so new – it was founded in 1888 and has been family run, and remains so to this day, and is now into the fifth generation. The company’s rich heritage has provided a solid foundation on which to build today’s T.H. Baker, which retains the same traditional values but continually looks to expand in new and exciting ways. T.H. Baker operates twenty stores located throughout the Midlands and southern England. Each store has its own assembled team of helpful staff ready to aid customers with extensive product knowledge. The site at 42 Tavern Street has been a jewellers since just before the second world war, providing the town with quality jewellery and watches, and now enters a new and exciting phase in its history under the Baker family. Lee and the team are long serving members of the store bringing a wealth of experience and providing a warm friendly environment to help you find that perfect gift for every occasion.

“By being tenants in common, we have more flexibility over the decisions that matter to us”

Tax tips on owning a second home together MY PROBLEM: Sadly, my Mum died nine months ago, leaving me her house in her Will. My wife Val and I liked the idea of renting out Mum’s property to build up a nest egg for our grandchildren. We read online that there are tax benefits to owning a second property as tenants in common, and wanted to understand the ramifications. In addition, we decided that we wanted our son, Daniel, to inherit the house directly when we pass away. With Mum’s death fresh in my mind, it made me realise how much there was to consider – we needed expert advice. JEFF, SUFFOLK

30

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

When Mum died, I asked my close friends if they knew of any solicitors who could manage her probate. Peter Gooch, Probate and Trust Manager for Barker Gotelee, came highly recommended and I wasn’t disappointed. Despite Mum’s rather complex, and frankly messy financial affairs, Peter dealt with everything brilliantly.

As part of the process, Mum’s house was transferred to me. Val and I have lived in our family home for years, and have no plans to move. Inheriting Mum’s property provided us with the opportunity for increasing our income through renting it out and we had read online that there could be tax benefits if I changed my sole ownership of the house to mine and Val’s joint names – as something Vanilla July/August 2019

REAL LIVES

called tenants in common. It sounded tempting, but I wanted to be sure of the facts. I needed some advice, so naturally I gave Barker Gotelee a call. This time I made an appointment with Lindsey Sharples from the Private Client team, who specialises in cases involving Wills, trusts and tax planning. When I met Lindsey, I immediately felt at ease. She reviewed our Wills and explained that now was an ideal time to review how Val and I owned our respective properties.

W

HEN WE bought our family house years ago, we did so as joint tenants. Lindsey explained that this means that when one partner dies, ownership automatically passes to the other partner – in this case, Val – regardless of what the Will says. Val and I continue to be happy with this arrangement, and Lindsey ensured this fitted with what our Wills said. Lindsey explained that the other way to hold a property is called tenants in common. Unlike a joint tenancy, owning a property as tenants in common means our respective shares would pass under the terms of our Wills. Then we got onto the topic of the second house. Lindsey explained that if we owned the property as tenants in common, we would have the added benefit of being able to adjust the level of income we each received from the property. We therefore decided to own our second property in unequal shares (80:20 in Val’s favour)

because Val, as a basic rate taxpayer, will pay far less to the taxman. As a result, we will get the maximum rental value on our second property and both enjoy the benefits while we’re both still here. Having it all explained, we were only too happy to go for it. Given that Lindsey had explained that the shares of the second property would pass under the terms of our Wills if we held that property as tenants in common, we then turned back to discussing our Wills. Val and I agree that we wish Mum’s house to automatically pass to Daniel upon our deaths, and Lindsey updated our Wills to ensure this will take effect. Lindsey handled all of this very professionally and

kept us updated throughout, which was very reassuring.

W

ITH OUR property ownership finalised, Lindsey explained that we could make further tax savings in the future, both of capital gains tax (should we sell the house) and inheritance tax (if we decided to give some of it to Daniel during our lifetimes). It’s something we may well consider in the future and we’ll certainly come back to Barker Gotelee for some further tax planning advice. Peter, Lindsey and the team were absolutely brilliant. As a result, I feel very confident that we have made the best decisions for the future. ■

House and garden often look their best during the summer months so a good time to prepare for your sale

with property expert HANNAH COOPE R

S

UMMER is without doubt my favourite time of year. With longer days and (hopefully!) warmer weather, there is much to enjoy outside. This time of year brings about many different sporting events – Wimbledon being a firm favourite in my household – as well as, this year, the Cricket World Cup. Both of which again seem to encourage us outside to have a go ourselves with varying degrees of success! It is generally a period for getting out of the house and topping up that Vitamin D level. The summer months provide the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. It is after all the season of barbecues and al-fresco family gatherings to make the most of the finer weather and longer evenings. We appear from the

32

cocoon of winter and spring, and the cosy warmth of inside and our homes suddenly expand with an extra outdoor ‘room’, a luxury the typical British weather doesn’t afford all year round. Spending prolonged time outside can often be the catalyst needed for making a decision about that move you’ve been considering; perhaps you need a bigger garden or the one you have has become too much work?

J

ULY and August are notoriously quieter months in the property market, as many are away on that longedfor break, busy keeping children entertained or generally just enjoying the summer months and their own gardens instead. With that being said, it is important to remember that if opting for a launch later in the year now is a good time to instruct an agent and prepare for your sale, whilst the house and gardens are looking their best.

In addition, agents are then able to discuss your property with prospective buyers to test the waters ahead of a full launch in the autumn. There are still many buyers out there looking to commit to a purchase, often ahead of the new school year in September, and with limited properties currently available on the open market, it might be worth considering marketing your home earlier than planned to secure a buyer ahead of the winter months, even if quietly to begin with. Please contact me if you have any questions about preparing for a potential move and I would be more than happy to help. ■ Hannah Cooper Senior Associate Director Strutt & Parker, The Stables, Wherstead Park, Wherstead, Ipswich IP9 2BJ. 01473 220444

MONEY MAN

T

ime is a slippery concept and famously relative. Looking back on a long life and considering how best to distribute your worldly goods is a very different viewpoint from someone starting their first job or about to get married. The truth is some financial decisions can span our entire lives and yet who can really know where they will be decades from now. We must make decisions about where we are broadly heading, and more specifically about what action we can take now and then be patient and focused. Taking the long view is a grown-up approach to risk management and investing, but this does not mean you do not

actively review your position. How and what we are looking to achieve financially is best broken down into goals, and regularly reviewed but time will always be a crucial factor. Investments will rise and fall, the greater the risk taken the more highs and lows will be experienced. This is the nature of investing and cannot be shied away from. You need to be willing to invest time in your chosen investment, not just money. If you save a little each month it won’t make you wealthy overnight, but your wealth will grow with time and patience. Make the decisions today which will help you meet your plans for tomorrow. Think about the true time frame of some of your decisions and ask yourself

whether what you are planning is for months, years or possibly decades in the future. ■ The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. Realise your property’s full potential with A1 Property Developments WHO ARE WE?

We are a collection of real estate industry professionals with creative ideas on how to maximise your potential in your home and land around you. HOW DOES IT WORK?

If you live in a flat or terrace house, then it is likely that we can be of no use. What we are looking for is those more rural houses set in large gardens or with adjoining fields. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE WORK WITH US?

We offer a free assessment of whether your property or land might be suitable for building a house or bungalow on. We obtain all surveys, planning permissions, architectural plans at our cost and provide you with a taxfree lump sum of money, far in excess of what the land would be worth if it remained a garden or field. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Many elderly clients struggle to maintain large gardens and grounds and have found they no longer need the space that they did when their families were young. Our July/August 2019 Vanilla

services allow them to downsize and put tax-free money into the bank and stay in their own home. We think it’s a much better option than Equity Release, which can sometimes mean that your family loses their inheritance. HOW DO I GET A FREE APPRAISAL?

Just call. A simple ten minute chat on the telephone and we can quickly appraise if you meet the criteria. If you do, we’ll come and measure up and ask you about 20 simple questions. You won’t pay us a penny ever and there is no pressure selling. You get the chance to evaluate our ideas and we always ask (and insist) that you get independent professional advice and that you talk with your family and anyone that might inherit your estate at a later date. It really is easy and simple and the results could make a big difference to your lifestyle and take away some of the worries like paying for elderly care or mobility requirements. For more information call us free on 0800 1075291

Do you need extra cash in your retirement?

“Let us obtain planning permission on your large garden or field. All the risks and costs are paid for by us and you could easily benefit with anything up to a six figure tax-free, lump sum, which could be used in retirement to settle an interest only mortgage, assist with elderly care fees or pay for that worldwide cruise that you always wanted. And, you get to stay in your home!” Find out how to liberate cash from your property with an informal, no obligation chat.

As the space is so large, I saw the chance to create a beautiful environment where local creatives could show and sell their products. PASCALE Pascale Smets My background was originally in fashion but I segued into interiors about 15 years ago writing and styling a column for LivingEtc. as well as doing interiors styling and vintage furniture buying for The Conran Shop and Heal’s amongst others. At Pascale all the things I love best have come together under one roof; a mix of the handmade and artisanal, with the well designed functional and mass produced, plus a bit of beautiful vintage in the mix. I have collaborated with woodturners, ceramicists, knitters and basket weavers to bring utterly unique pieces to Pascale. My products have come from all over the world France, Morocco, Turkey, South Africa, Sweden, Portugal and of course the UK. It’s called Pascale partly because it's a bit continental (like me – I’m Belgian) but mostly because it’s personal. I wouldn’t dream of selling anything I wouldn’t want or use myself be it a leather apron, a Tamegroute bowl, or Marseillaise soap. HELLEY NOTT is a fine art photographer with a growing reputation for her striking still lifes She is absorbed in the world of slow photography. Each of her photographs is painstakingly composed using the traditions of the classical masters, but with a modern touch. She manipulates window light to tease out the beauty and texture of her subject – be it an elegant rose or a common cabbage. In each photograph she uses 21st Century techniques, but with painstaking care and skill. “Nature is so beautiful and I do what I can to reveal that without the use of artificial light, just as the masters would have done.” Shelley says “And like

those masters, I will often include subtle messages within the photograph which may not be obvious at first glance.” Although digitally photographed, Shelley uses her computer to perform only those tasks she would have done when in the traditional darkroom. There is no digital manipulation, the photographs are as seen through the lens. You can find Shelley’s Flower Pieces on display at Darsham Nurseries between 28 August and 6 October while her Still Lifes with food at their heart will be in the Quay Gallery from 26 September until 2 October.

A TRADITIONAL SUMMER theatre season which has been running in two Suffolk seaside towns for over 60 years has been saved from closure by an awardwinning local producer and is being relaunched for 2019. Matthew Townshend has taken over production of what was ‘Suffolk Summer Theatre’ which will now be called ‘Theatre on the Coast’. It will present four shows, each playing for a fortnight, opening on Wednesday, July 10, at Southwold Arts Centre and running until August 31. Matthew said: “We are thrilled to be taking on the heritage of Suffolk Summer Theatre and continuing the legacies of all who have contributed to this staple of the East Anglian arts scene for the last few years. Our aim is to bring a fresh new look to the repertoire, whilst making sure that we honour the great tradition of entertainment on the coast. I’m very excited to rebuild the sense of ownership held by local people of their own Theatre.” For more about the shows visit www.mtproductions.co.uk

TOP TIPS to reduce

PLASTIC USE

Local retailer, Donalds Volvo, gives top tips for people wishing to reduce their singleuse plastic waste, after helping to clean up a local beach...

E

ARLIER this Summer, Donalds Volvo, at Futura Park, invited local families to join the team for Earth Hour to learn about the effects of plastics in the local environment and oceans, and visit a local beach for a clean-up. In a convoy of Volvo cars, the party of 35 environmental enthusiasts, young and old, drove to Bridge Wood Beach at Orwell Country Park to conduct their very own beach clean. Over a 100-metre stretch of beach, the team managed to collect nine bin bags full of litter totalling 19kg, including plastic bags, crisp packets and cigarette butts. The event aimed to not only help conserve local wildlife and marine animals, but also help to educate the next

40

generation to love and respect their environment. The Donalds team also gave presentations on environmental conservation and guests made pledges to reduce their own wastage. Benjamin Grant, group marketing manager at Donalds Volvo, shares his top tips for reducing single-use plastic at home.

Top tips for reducing single-use plastic waste ➊ CARRY A REUSABLE CUP AND BOTTLE

While disposable coffee cups look like they are made of cardboard, the plastic coating means cups are not recyclable, and most end up in a landfill.

Most reusable coffee cups are under £10, and a small investment can go a long way to helping reduce your singleuse plastic waste. With many coffee shops offering discounts to customers using a reusable coffee cup, the initial investment can be made back in no time. Carrying a reusable water bottle instead of purchasing bottled water is another easy way to reduce the amount of single-use plastic you produce. The Refill App shows you a map of stations that would be more than happy to refill your water bottle for free while you’re on the go.

➋ DECLINE PLASTIC STRAWS Small but deadly, documentaries such as Blue Planet have shown the harm that plastic straws can inflict on sea life. Saying no

Vanilla July/August 2019

Bridge Wood Beach Clean The team at Donalds were really pleased with the number of people from the local community who attended their beach clean, and the amount of litter they retrieved from the beaches. Benjamin Grant said: “It just goes to show how important the welfare of our local environment and wildlife is to both the local community and Volvo, and it’s especially brilliant to see just how many young people are enthusiastic about saving the environment. “Sustainability is absolutely key to everything we do at Volvo. From making 25% of plastics in cars recyclable by 2025, to pledging to put one million electrified vehicles on the road in the next five years, we are very much a brand for people who care about people and the world in which we live.” Donalds Volvo registered the event to East Suffolk Council’s ‘Love East Suffolk’ litter-picking scheme, resulting in the council donating to the team’s chosen charity, St Elizabeth’s Hospice.

to plastic straws in restaurants and bars not only reduces the amount of plastic in the ocean, but may also encourage the establishment to consider alternatives, such as paper or metal straws. At Volvo, we have pledged to remove all single-use plastics such as food containers, cutlery, plates and cups from our facilities around the world by the end of 2019.

➌ SWAP CLING-FILM FOR BEESWAX WRAPS

Swap clingfilm and plastic sandwich bags for reusable beeswax wraps. Unlike clingfilm, foil and plastic sandwich bags, beeswax wraps are reusable and biodegradable. Sealed using just the warmth of your hands, they keep your lunch just as well protected as clingfilm and foil,

July/August 2019 Vanilla

with the added bonus that you can wash them clean and use them again!

➍ SHOP AT YOUR LOCAL FARMERS MARKET

Farmers markets are a great way to support the local economy, buy delicious, fresh produce and avoid plastic packaging. Ipswich Market is situated next to the Town Hall, and runs every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Just don’t forget your reusable shopping bag!

➎ GET YOUR MILK DELIVERED Although the early morning sound of the milkman is not as common as it used to be, you can still get milk delivered to your door in glass bottles – which are then collected, cleaned and reused. Milk

& More is a local grocery delivery service championing sustainable suppliers who use environmentally-conscious packaging processes.

➏ GET CLUED UP ABOUT RECYCLING

Recycling is a fantastic way to ensure waste avoids the landfill and is transformed into a new product, but the list of materials that can be recycled often varies depending on where you live. Check your local council’s website, where you can download PDFs explaining what can, and can’t, be recycled in your local area. For more info about Donalds Volvo and Volvo’s sustainability pledges, please email marketing@donalds-group.co.uk or call 01473 252484.

W

E ALL LIKE to think of summer beauty as lowmaintenance; dishevelled beachy hair, sun-kissed, radiant skin and nothing more than SPF and a few coats of mascara. Wrong. As much as we love this season it is the time of year when you have to put in the prep work, and we’re talking de-fuzzing, tanning, polishing, scrubbing, the list goes on (men don’t know how lucky they are). Put in the time and you’ll thank yourself for it later, when the dreaded bikini moment isn’t quite so dreaded. Silky-soft smooth skin and perfectlypolished fingers and toes really are your summer must-haves. While you could barricade yourself in your bathroom and spend a day doing DIY pampering, we strongly suggest

you hand your body over to the experts who will do the job for you. Plus, you’ll not only look good but feel good after a spot of ‘me’ time. Luckily for you there are loads of spas and salons offering ‘summer prep’ packages which are not to be missed, where you can enjoy multiple treatments at a saving.

Shocking skincare ingredients revealed in Periodic Table

E

ver wondered what goes into those beauty potions? A study by fashion retailer Missy Empire has revealed the weirdest ingredients used in beauty products, giving 38 of the most common ingredients a score based on how weird they are. Surprisingly, skincare heroes Retinol and Hyaluronic acids failed to appear on the list, instead CBD Oil, Snail Slime, Bird Poo and Bee Venom were topped the list of the weirdest ingredients in everyday lotions and potions. Missy Empire trawled through 38 of the most common beauty ingredients to reveal the 12 weirdest ingredients, scoring them out of 100.

HOW WEIRD?

The study uncovered skincare to have the highest amount of ‘weird’ ingredients followed by make-up and personal care products. Interestingly, 80% of the weirdest ingredients are found in moisturisers and facial care products. In a beauty world obsessed with achieving thicker hair and stronger nails, Calcium was the most instagrammed ingredient, followed closely by nature’s Botox, Apitoxin which is derived from bee-stings. n

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED

...by Sue Adams and the team at Image

WHY ARE MY LASHES SO SPARSE? I HAVE NEVER HAD EYELASH EXTENSIONS Sparse lashes can be caused by many factorsincluding your genes. Some mascaras can be damaging, especially waterproof types, so it’s worth investing in a mineral-based mascara. If you subconsciously pick at your lashes or mascara, or if you rub aggressively when removing eye make-up, this can be detrimental to the condition. Also age is a key factor, as from around 40, our hair starts getting finer. We recommend a treatment/primer to go on before your mascara with powerful ingredients such as peptides, biotin, vitamin B5 and vitamin E. Applied directly everyday it will maks a massive difference to the condition and definitely make them less sparse. Top tip: Buy a growth serum they really do work! I GET REALLY CONFUSED WITH WHAT ORDER I SHOULD APPLY MY PRODUCTS Once you get yourself into a routine it becomes a lot easier! Cleansing the skin comes first which removes any impurities, makeup etc. Next is the toner which closes the pores. You would then use your serum as they have very small particles, which diffuse into deeper layers of

48

the skin! Next would be your moisturiser. You should always use your SPF after your moisturiser as this is your skin’s ‘barrier’ from harmful rays and is so important! If you were then continuing to apply makeup, it would be primer first, then your foundation or BB cream to finish... WHAT IS A LASH LIFT? I AM WORRIED IT WILL RUIN MY NATURAL LASHES Lash lifting enhance natural lashes instead of adding to them! It is a form of natural ‘perming’. The lashes are lifted up, the solution is applied, as well as a tint. This then gives a natural look of longer, darker, curly lashes that can last from 4-8 weeks! The products used are safe to use and conditioner is applied afterward so your lashes are soft and hydrated! I CANNOT GET RID OF MY DRY LIPS... Dry lips can be a challenging concern for many! We would definitely recommend a good lip balm or butter with hydrating ingredients such as vitamins a or e, shea butter, coconut oil. You can also make a really simple hydrating lip scrub at home which would also help to moisten the lips! Simply mix 1 teaspoon of honey with 2 teaspoons of sugar, that's it! Put a little on your lips and rub together. You may also be making your dry lips worse without realising! Licking or biting your lips only makes them more dry and sore, also products such as petroleum jelly are only barriers for the lips, so this doesn’t actually hydrate them which is a very common mistake to make! n

Katrina Love on the power of making choices

More than beautiful

S

O HERE WE are again... Summertime. Once we have stopped cheering that the sun has come out, the next thought is that there will be a wardrobe change needed... hooray! Out come the shorts, light summer dresses and the BEACH WEAR... Suddenly there is a chill back in the air... Are you ‘beach body’/ summer ready? The memory of THAT and similar adverts send a shiver down the spine of many of us... the use of shame and humiliation used to make us buy products is now normalised and familiar. This form of marketing is based on a very deep belief that we all have, at sometime throughout our life felt that we are NOT ENOUGH, and the advertisers helpfully provide us with an immaculate

comparison in case we were in any doubt of this. We are taught to feel good about our bodies based on their appearance rather than how it feels and what it can do. The Body Image Movement founder, Tanya Brumfitt quotes “My body is not an ornament, it is a vehicle to my dreams”. I love this and think we need to bear this in mind whilst facing the negative barrage of body shaming fired at us through the media. Certain companies like Boots, are now moving away and challenging this kind of marketing with their fabulous new advert which depicts two friends at the airport, looking at a model in an advertisement that is ‘summer ready’, shaking their heads in disbelief as the song plays “ leave it out, nobody looks like that, it’s just a load of chat...” In case you are still left in any doubt, you DO NOT need to look a certain way or be anything other than your extraordinary self, to be ready for summer or any other amazing adventure that awaits you. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder we are told... but we are so much more than an aspired beauty. We are funny, intelligent, kind and totally individual. We are more than enough and so, so much more than just beautiful...

The new Boots summer ad champions body positivity

THE NIROSHINI RITUAL At Niroshini Cosmetic Acupuncture, Melissa Day provides the ultimate ‘non-surgical’ facelift – a completely natural alternative to Botox and cosmetic surgery.

I

T’S A TREATMENT that has been featured on TV’s Ten Years Younger and is much favoured as a natural beauty alternative by many preparing for red carpet events. It is a completely natural alternative to Botox and cosmetic surgery. The ‘Niroshini Cosmetic Acupuncture Ritual’ is safe, efficient and effective. Melissa also treats a range of health and skin requirements including sagging skin, fine lines, wrinkles, muscle tone, acne and other skin concerns and conditions. She believes that every client is unique so all her treatments are completely bespoke and tailor-made for the individual. The advantage of acupuncture is that it’s completely natural – there are no pills or potions, nothing is injected and there is no scarring or recovery time as it’s a very gentle process. It’s well known that these treatments are also restful and rejuvenating, so be prepared to float out of any treatment at Niroshini Cosmetic Acupuncture, feeling more than a little blissful.

beforehand to assess health requirements and desired results. The treatment is completely tailored to each individual.

THE BENEFITS

Melissa advises that it is vital that you drink plenty of fluids over the next 72 hours to support your system as the treatment has a detoxifying effect on the body. Hot water and lemon drinks first thing in the morning will be excellent for helping to support and cleanse the liver. Adding fresh ginger will be a bonus, assisting the reduction of inflammation and promoting healthier digestion. n

The Niroshini Ritual not only focuses on cosmetic concerns but also overall health and wellbeing. The Niroshini Method that Melissa has developed focuses on musculoskeletal issues as well as regulating the immune system and internal organ function. To ensure each session is bespoke, a detailed Niroshini Treatment Plan Development session is held

50

THE EXPERIENCE

Despite having needles put into my face this was surprisingly an incredibly relaxing and calming experience. Some areas of the face are slightly more tender than others, but I felt completely at ease with the idea of needles being put in, thanks to Melissa, and later I think I actually nodded off! Aesthetically, I was concerned about my sagging jaw line, and the plan development session exposed some concern on digestion and kidneys, so Melissa focused the treatment towards helping these areas. There was definite improvement to my jaw silhouette afterwards, and in general my skin had a youthful glow for a few days. To be able to keep hold of the effects, I will definitely be considering more sessions. AFTERCARE

SHOWER BENCHES

Walk in, take a seat and enjoy showering in comfort. More and more of us are asking for a seat in the shower. It makes life so much more convenient and ladies can use a shower bench to help with shaving those legs, cutting out the slippery balancing act! A bench is also added space for storage for soap and shampoo bottles and other miscellaneous shower items... not to mention the obvious benefit to anyone with an injury or mobility issues. Whatever the reason may be, a shower bench can enhance the look and functionality of a shower. l For more advice on walk-in showers and benches please visit the Ipswich Bathroom and Tile Centre.

STYLE FILE BY DARRELL SMITH ARCHWAY CARPETS, WOODBRIDGE

Boldly go...

O

ver the last few years grey has become the new black when it comes to carpet colour. Not only is it stylish, it’s a safe choice for most people. But what about those people who wish to reflect their personality through their carpet? They may be more Little Red Corvette than Fade to Grey. These lovers of colour should fear not; carpet companies are producing bold and beautiful designs out there!

Carnaby Street by Brockway Carpets

Starting downstairs in the lounge is Brockway Carpets’ aptly named Carnaby Street. Just like the area of London it's named after it takes its inspiration – in its red, white and blue striped design – from the music and fashion of punk and the mod scene. Ideally, stripes work well in hallways and stairs, to lead the eye through the home. However, just like the music that inspires it, constraint and conservatism have no part to play so it can go where ever you want it to go. In the kitchen, life has thankfully moved on from the moribund to the marvellous with companies like Unnatural Flooring providing bursts of colour with their synthetic vinyl weave rugs. Think 80s day glow statements neatly bordered in a variety of edgings, plus, they are waterproof so can withstand anything a family or a party can throw at it. Moving upstairs, Crucial Trading is creating audacious designs with their Audrey collection. Their bold, crisp designs manage to be contemporary while embodying an art deco ethic reminiscent of the roaring 20s. In this setting, furniture tends to take a supporting role with minimalism, allowing the carpet to come through. So, there is a life beyond grey and magnolia, and it is as bold and as beautiful as you decide to make it.

HE SUN INN at Dedham glows with a happy history of impressing guests since the 1500s. This gorgeous old coaching inn, opposite the imposing St Mary’s church, in the picturesque village, is at the very heart of Constable Country. For centuries, weary travellers will have rested their bones and

enjoyed fine hospitality here, and today’s visitors find it just as welcoming and relaxing. The lovely dining rooms are open and oak-beamed, with beautiful deep blue walls, and velvety red banquettes for bigger groups, while there are plenty of intimate tables for two. From the start the smiling staff are attentive but unobtrusive, bringing to the table bottles of icy filtered water and a dish of freshly-baked rustic bread and rosemary focaccia, accompanied by a lush pool of green olive oil and an inky black olive tapenade for dipping. Choosing what comes next is the tricky part. There are Mersea oysters (and Champagne of

course), cured meats or olives as appetisers, and a long starter menu including courgette and lovage soup with crème fraiche, baby beetroot terrine with feta, walnuts and sherry vinegar. The salt cod brandade was light as a cloud, deep with flavours, accompanied by a tiny fried quail’s egg, chives and slowroasted tomatoes. The chicken livers were served with a fennel crisp bread, the saltiness of anchovy combining perfectly with piquant radish and fresh green broad beans. The pasta menu is just as impressive – rigatoni with Tuscan-style sausage, chard, ricotta and pinenuts, ‘troife all Geneovese’ – basil, pinenuts, fine Vanilla July/August 2019

Be Willy Wonka for the day! Calling all chocolate lovers for Pump Street Chocolate factory tours

P

ump Street Chocolate began when the bakery started to make chocolate for its delicious pastries back in 2012. The chocolate side of the business quickly grew and in 2017 the factory moved to Bentwaters Parks in Rendlesham. This is where the tours now take place. The tour begins with an explanation about the background of the business and the huge difference in quality between high street chocolate brands and bean-to-bar makers like Pump Street and the way they work with the very best single estates and cooperatives. The grower’s ferment and dry the beans at the origin in its natural environment, rather than using warehouses like the big corporations. Pump Street buy a year’s supply of beans from the growers and are able to tell exactly where each batch of finished chocolate has been grown. The number on the top of the packets relates directly to a farm and you can read about each of the growers on the website. The tour then takes you through the chocolate making process, starting in the room where the cocoa beans are checked for quality. You can see the beans being placed on large trays and July/August 2019 Vanilla

double roasted, and even try a cocoa bean after roasting. The shells are then taken off and the beans are broken down into nibs. They are then put into machines to grind down into a paste – this takes around 24 hours. At this point a small amount of cocoa butter is added to make the smooth, glossy finish. Poured out into blocks, the flavour is allowed to develop until its ready to be tempered. The chocolate will be melted down again and this is when other flavours will be added, including breads and pastries from the bakery. Pump Street is unique in creating bread flavoured bars – Sourdough and Sea Salt, Rye Crumb, Brown Bread, Panettone, Hot Cross Bun and Eccles. The chocolate is then moulded into bars. Once set they are packaged up and ready to head out to the shops. At this point in the tour you will be able to test the wide variety of flavours! Discover the diversity of flavours created from different countries and changes in the percentage of cocoa used. Yum! You can visit the Pump Street Chocolate factory on selected Fridays throughout the year. Tours run at 10am, 12pm and

THEATRE

5-28 SEPTEMBER

New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich highlights 24 - 27 JULY

The Lady In The Van Presented by Gallery Players

First a book, a play and then a film, The Lady in the Van tells the true story of Alan Bennett's strained friendship with Miss Mary Shepherd, an eccentric homeless woman whom Bennett befriended in 1974 before allowing her ‘temporarily’ to park her Bedford van in the driveway of his Camden home. For Alan Bennett charity truly began at home but little did he know that she would remain there for fifteen years. The story is funny, poignant and life affirming. This is an amateur production presented as part of the New Wolsey’s annual Open Season. 7.30pm Matinee 3pm (Sunday 12pm & 4pm) £10-£27 July/August 2019 Vanilla

One Man, Two Guvnors Set in the colourful underworld of Brighton in the swinging sixties. Richard Bean’s farce mixes all the elements of classic comedy into a fizzing cocktail of fun. Mistaken identity, cross-dressing, physical knockabout, slapstick, mad gags and outrageous puns are shaken and stirred as Francis Henshall, cast out of his skiffle band, finds the best route to satisfy his considerable appetites for food, sex and money, to become One Man serving Two Guvnors. This joyous updating of Goldoni’s classic Italian comedy, The Servant of Two Masters, has quickly established itself as one of the great British comedies of the 21st Century. 7.45pm, Matinee 2.30pm £10-£28 For more information or to book go to wolseytheatre.co.uk or call 01473 295900

Peter Gwizdala Managing Director, Arlingtons

My East Coast Life who avoided being put on the census in April 1911 as part of the campaign to get women the vote. I enjoy telling customers of Arlingtons’ history and that it was popular with American servicemen during the war. Many customers tell us their parents used to dance here when it was a ballroom from the 1950’s to 1990’s.

Peter Gwizdala is the Managing Director of Arlingtons, a multifaceted café/dining/ venue in Museum Street, Ipswich. Situated in a Grade II-listed building, it was formerly Ipswich’s museum and has links to Queen Elizabeth I and the Suffragettes. Peter lives in Woodbridge with wife, Alina.

How long have you lived in Suffolk? We’ve lived here for more than ten years but visited on many occasions prior to that. What first attracted you to the area? Big skies, beautiful countryside, clean air and superb pubs. I used to come walking here with a former colleague – some would call it a pub crawl! Tell us what inspired you to go into the restaurant business. I was interested in food and drink from an early age. When I joined the army, one of my additional responsibilities was catering for 800 soldiers. Being in a Scottish regiment, you knew when you hadn’t got the food right, but I had a great team, so it didn’t happen often. That’s what we’ve been building at Arlingtons. The kitchen and front of house

staff are passionate and aim to give the best service and food which is freshly made and locally sourced. We pride ourselves on providing a menu which is 50% vegetarian, 25% vegan and almost 50% gluten free. Arlingtons is a unique venue – how did you come about acquiring it? We were looking for a restaurant and when it came on the market jumped at the chance of owning such a beautiful, historic building, where we dined when we first moved to Suffolk. We’re proud of the role that Arlingtons has played in the town's history and that of the country. From Thomas Seckford in Elizabethan times, to its connection with Charles Darwin and the Suffragettes

What are your other favourite local haunts? Our go-to place is Aqua Eight for delicious Asian fusion food. I know I’m biased, but I eat daily at Arlingtons as the food is always fresh, and with a wide selection of dishes, I never get bored. The menu changes every four to six weeks to ensure we have the freshest seasonal ingredients from the market. If you had £5 left in the whole world, how would you spend it? I would give it away because, as my Father used to say, there’s always someone worse off than you. n Arlingtons, 13 Museum Street, Ipswich, IP1 1HE T: 01473 230293 www.arlingtons-ipswich.co.uk
