Message from the On behalf of the Vancouver Pride Society’s Board of Directors, welcome to the 36th Pride celebration in Vancouver. As we come together to celebrate Pride this season, we’re excited to celebrate the accomplishments made around the world that have furthered human rights for our community. It’s also an important time to reflect upon and celebrate our history. Forty-five years ago, on May 14, 1969, Canada decriminalized homosexual acts between consenting adults with the passage of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1968-69. It received royal assent on June 27. The U.S. has made tremendous progress in the past year for marriage equality. Nineteen states have struck down the ban on same-sex marriage. In Canada, six provinces will celebrate ten years of equality and BC will celebrate eleven years on July 3. Locally, we are proud of the achievements of the Vancouver Parks

8

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Board, who unanimously passed the recommendations from the Trans* and Gender Variant working group on April 28, 2014. These recommendations help increase accessibility and safety for trans and gender variant individuals and their families in recreation facilities. We are also proud that the Vancouver School Board passed the updated Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policy. This policy is crucial for making our schools safer for students who are trans or gender variant. Sadly, there have been many setbacks for the LGBTQ+ community in the past year. On February 24, Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni signed into law the Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2014, previously called the “Kill the Gays” Bill in western mainstream media because it originally proposed a death penalty. In 77 countries, there are anti-gay laws. In five countries and parts of two others, homosexuality is still punishable with the death penalty, and 70 countries imprison citizens because of their sexual orientation.

In Canada, we are hopeful that this year, Bill C-279 will be adopted so that gender identity is covered in the list of grounds protected from discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act. As we are writing, the bill is going through its second reading at the Senate. If this bill passes, it will be a landmark victory in our community for trans and gender variant folks across the country. As we celebrate this year’s Pride in Vancouver, we want to acknowledge and thank our elders and the pioneers within the LGBTQ+ movement— without them, we would not have made it as far as we have now. We hope you enjoy this season’s events. They’re possible because of the support of our partners, supporters, friends, entertainers, suppliers, our talented operations team and dedicated volunteers. Have a happy and safe PRIDE!

Message from the “I am gay, and my family is hunting me. So are the local village police. I don’t know what to do anymore, and my school expelled me as soon as they found out what I am. Please, if anyone is listening to me out there, help me. I have no one to turn to. My partner was arrested and faces life imprisonment. My teacher, who is liberal about what I am, recommended VANCOUVER PRIDE.” This is the first of many emails I received from a 22-year-old Ugandan man. Something many don’t recognize is that Vancouver Pride is a beacon of hope for people, not just in Vancouver, but all over the world. Pride is a snapshot of Vancouver’s LGBTQ+ Community and of the organizations that support our community. It is also a celebration of who we are together.

GENERAL MANAGER Every year people come out to Pride for the first time and find community. We are proud to partner with many community organizations to produce events for our whole community. We strive to create a safe and welcoming space where everyone can celebrate as their authentic selves. I want to share a story with you about someone who stayed true to his authentic self despite the cost. His name is George, and he voluntarily admitted to having sex with men in a place where coming out would destroy his life as he knew it. He was sentenced to “preventative detention” as an “incurable homosexual”—life in prison—to be served at a maximum security prison.

No. This was Canada. Forty-one years ago. George Klippert was the last Canadian to be convicted for homosexuality. When you are out celebrating this year, take a moment to consider that seismic shift in Canada. Take stock of the amazing organizations and community leaders that have led the charge for equality, and consider supporting your community by either donating what you can or volunteering when you can. Ray Lam, General Manager

Message from

Mayor Gregor Robertson On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I would like to wish everyone a happy, fun and fabulous 2014 Vancouver Pride. Our city is so tremendously enriched by the economic, cultural, and social contributions of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and two-spirited residents. The Pride Parade and Festival are a remarkable celebration of these contributions, and of hard-fought progress in the community’s work to secure equal rights and acceptance. 2014 has shown us that the need for Vancouver’s leadership continues, both here and throughout the world. Vancouver’s Host City Pride Mission in Sochi made a tremendous

10

impact to ensure respect for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion at future Olympic and Paralympic Games, and raised international awareness of the need to end homophobia in sport once and for all. We can also be very proud of groundbreaking new policy frameworks advanced this year by the Vancouver Park Board and School Board that will make Vancouver schools and recreation centres safer and more inclusive for LGBTQ+ students and residents of all backgrounds. These actions build upon the City’s designation of special civic status for the Vancouver Pride Parade, in recognition of its unique place in defining the character of this city. Vancouver’s Pride celebrations are now among the very largest in the

world, with over 650,000 attendees each year turning out to show their support and to join in the festivities. Vancouver recognizes that diversity, equality, acceptance and Pride make us so much stronger as a city. As Mayor, I am fully committed to continuing our work together to end homophobia and transphobia in all of their forms. I would once again like to thank the Vancouver Pride Society, its sponsors and the volunteers for fostering such a world-class celebration of culture, freedom and community spirit in Vancouver. On behalf of the City of Vancouver, Vancouver Park Board, Vancouver Public Library, Vancouver Police Department, Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, and our LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee, Happy Pride!

About QMUNITY The QMUNITY PRIDE Legacy Fund is a joint venture between QMUNITY and the Vancouver Pride Society, supporting QMUNITY’s core services and providing micro-grants to local groups doing excellent work in the queer community. Projects are selected by committee annually. The fund has supported: research for Get That Freak: Homophobia and Transphobia in High Schools; safe spaces in the form of a queer seniors blogging project; rural youth drop-ins; community celebrations; and services for LGBTQ+ individuals who are experiencing employment or housing challenges. Some of the many organizations to benefit from the QMUNITY PRIDE Legacy Fund include the 411 Seniors Centre Society, Trans Alliance Society, Lighthouse of Hope and Egale Canada.

Honda Celebration of Light

At QMUNITY, everything we do is guided by a simple belief: that every human being deserves to feel a sense of belonging, to be who they are, and to live a life free of hatred and violence. For 35 years, this belief has inspired QMUNITY’s dedication to serving BC’s queer community. Whether we’re offering a teenager in crisis a safe place to come out, or advocating for seniors who fear going back into the closet, QMUNITY continues to be there. It’s true that we’ve come a long way. In Canada today, we enjoy some of the most progressive human rights in the world. Yet members of our community continue to experience bullying the classroom, discrimination in care homes, and struggle to accept themselves in a world where it is still illegal to be gay in 76 countries. At QMUNITY, we imagine a world where all queer people are included and free from discrimination. Because when someone feels safe, accepted and a sense of belonging, we know they can achieve their greatest potential. At QMUNITY, we deliver our work in creative and practical ways to make our dollars go as far as possible.

V U O C VAN ? PRIDE Vancouver Pride is about being inclusive. Our events are both family and youth friendly, and take place in everyday public spaces. In order to be greener, the Vancouver Pride Society has come together with the City of Vancouver’s Green Event Team to make waste and disposal more eco-friendly. For the past 36 years, Vancouver Pride has maintained a clean safety record, free of police incidents and disturbances. Thank you for your support in continuing this fabulous tradition! Vancouver Pride events are accessible and inclusive of every ethnicity and demographic,

regardless of mobility. Most events are free or by donation. Pride visitors are welcomed by hotels and restaurants as peaceful, generous customers. The VPS raises thousands of dollars annually for community organizations and charities, through direct fundraising events and partnerships. Fundraising also helps other local non-profits sustain their services for those who require assistance, and events of this caliber provide a generous economic boost to our amazing city! The VPS is a great place to volunteer, and a fantastic way to get to know the city.

By Jill Taylor Volunteering with Pride offers an opportunity to work with an organization and community that is gaining recognition and growing stronger. As a volunteer I met and shared stories with so many amazing individuals, from many different backgrounds. Volunteers have a lot of opportunities to enrich and challenge themselves—helping keep our events “green,” working with businesses and community groups at our festivals, leading small (or large!) groups of other volunteers—and that’s just the tip of the Pride iceberg! Think about it, the Vancouver Pride Parade is the biggest public

event in Vancouver. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? My wife and I volunteered two years ago, after meeting the VPS staff and being inspired. Since then, we’ve continued to sign up to make each Pride event a fabulous celebration of the LGBTQ+ Community! As a part of the LGBTQ+ Community, I feel it is imperative that I do my part to keep the spirit of our flag positive and alive. Whether helping out at one event or all of them, come share in the spirit of Vancouver Pride!

MEN’S HEALTH Canada’s gay rights movement has achieved unprecedented successes. In three short decades, gay love was legalized, protected and now celebrated with marriage. A lesser-known story, although rooted in gay rights, is the gay men’s health movement. While gay men’s health had been discussed in the 1960s and 70s, it was the opening of AIDS Vancouver in 1983 that showed the world that Vancouver cared about all of its citizens, even the gay ones. Organizations like BC Persons with AIDS (now Positive Living), YouthCO and the Asian Society for the Intervention of AIDS (ASIA) were at the forefront, demanding and providing prevention and care for those most affected by HIV. As the epidemic continued to disproportionately impact gay men, new approaches were pioneered here. Existing community-based programs were adapted to target gay men, including the Man to Man program and Gayway. New organizations and programs were created by gay men, for gay men, like the Community Based Research Centre whose Sex Now Survey remains one of the most valuable sources of data on gay men in BC and now Canada.

30

WOMEN’S HEALTH By the mid-2000s, gay men’s health in Vancouver started to take a more integrated approach— looking at overlapping issues that contribute to a larger picture of health within the gay male community. This shift yielded the founding of Health Initiative for Men (HIM). HIM is the vision and labour of men who care about their community and want to strengthen their health and well-being. For HIM, there are four aspects of health—Physical, Mental, Sexual and Social. It is around these pillars that HIM has developed its services, offering opportunities such as exercise groups, yoga classes, HIV testing—both rapid and early—as well as peer support and counselling. Gay men in Vancouver have a lot to celebrate this Pride including access to healthcare, STI testing, and treatment—the way we want it. These services and programs did not come easy—we have generations of gay men and their allies to toast this Pride season!

It’s hard for women to speak freely with a healthcare professional; it’s even harder when you’re a queer woman trying to obtain correct health information without feeling the need to out yourself.

all of us Vancouver’s parks and community centres are our largest network of public spaces and provide essential opportunities to build individual and community health. Yet, gendered spaces and programs present barriers for trans*, transgender, gender variant, genderqueer, transsexual, two spirit and gender non-conforming community members. Starting in August 2013 the Trans* & Gender Variant Inclusion Working Group, composed of eight volunteers, have been working on extensive research, and community engagement that aims to identify the barriers to participation and potential solutions. Through polls, surveys, community meetings and focus groups the working group gathered insight on the diverse needs of our communities. This input informs a report detailing 77 recommendations as to how to make Vancouver Park Board spaces safer and more inclusive for trans* and gender variant individuals. The Report, Building a Path to Parks and Recreation For All, addresses five main pillars: public spaces and signage, programming, forms and literature, HR policy and training, and community partnerships. The report takes an intersectional look at the barriers that prevent people from accessing the spaces and looks to reduce financial barriers, and increase options for people with accessibility needs, multi-users and families. The work that is being done will not only help the trans and gender variant communities, it addresses the needs of a large variety of people who use the Park Board spaces, or would like to.

On April 28, the Vancouver Park Board unanimously passed all 77 recommendations, moving forward an ongoing collaboration with the community and staff as implementation begins this summer.

What changes will happen first? There are recommendations that are already underway, recommendations that will roll out this summer and fall, and recommendations that will take longer to implement. Equipping staff to support trans and gender variant folks: Already underway is staff training with more than 500 aquatics personnel. A further goal is to train registration staff by November. Inclusive signage: There will be pilots of new signage in one or two facilities that removes gender icons from single stall washrooms and shifts to function based symbols for women’s, men’s, and universal washrooms and change rooms. Trans and gender variant friendly programming: Watch for a trans* and friends drop-in swim to be piloted at Templeton Pool this September. Want to learn more or get involved in implementation? Visit vancouver.ca, follow us on Facebook, or email trans.gendervariant@gmail.com.

DIGNITY HOUSE Dignity House is a proposal to develop affordable housing for LGBTQ+ seniors and their allies in Vancouver. There are no dedicated affordable housing programs for LGBTQ+ seniors in the city. Of the subsidized housing that is available at-large, there are long wait lists. Private market housing is not an option for people with low income. Vancouver has high rental costs. LGBTQ+ seniors have unique needs. They have higher rates of depression, substance use, and suicide. They are at high risk of social isolation because they often do not have children or family to support them in their old age. Some LGBTQ+ seniors have lost much of their social support circle to the HIV/AIDS crisis. LGBTQ+ seniors are an invisible group. Many seniors are forced to go back in the closet for

34

fear of bias, discrimination, or rejection by their caregivers. It is our aim that LGBTQ+ seniors can end their life with dignity, respect, safety, and security. It would be a wonderful show of gratitude if we provide a dignified home for the generation who fought for our rights and opened the door for many of us to live with equality and humanity. The United Way of the Lower Mainland and the Vancity Community Foundation came on board to conduct a market research and feasibility study of the Dignity House project. Over 600 people completed the survey and an update will be provided to the community soon. To donate to Dignity House and/or get on our mailing list email dignityhouse@outlook.com.

THE RAINBOW CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP A support group for LGBTQ caregivers and/or those caring for an LGBTQ person with dementia. It is very comforting to know you’re not alone and to hear other people’s experiences. It makes it so much easier to deal with your own situation. — Caregiver Support Group Member Caregiving can be all-consuming and caregiver self-care is often neglected. One of the ways the Alzheimer Society of B.C. helps caregivers care for themselves is through support groups. There are groups for spouses, adult children, Chinese-speaking caregivers and since January 2014, a Rainbow Caregiver Support Group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) caregivers and/or those caring for an LGBTQ+ individual with dementia.

Because LGBTQ people with dementia and their caregivers may face unique challenges, this free monthly group provides an opportunity for: • • • •

Dementia education and information Sharing common experiences, practical tips and strategies Emotional support Support that is specific to and appropriate for LGBTQ caregivers

For details, and to register for this Vancouverbased support group, please contact Kara Turner, Support & Education Coordinator, at 604-675-5153 or kturner@alzheimerbc.org. Information on Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia can also be found at: www.alzheimerbc.org.

Conni Smudge MC Station #1 (Robson & Denman) Hello my kittens! Happy Pride! This year, I am taking it back to the basics, back to all the colours of our rainbow. I love the diversity—we’ve 70each developed special meaning for every colour in the rainbow. Here are mine: Red for life brings to mind old clichés like live life to the fullest, you can’t take it with you. Orange for healing to remind us of moving on after painful experiences, physically, or mentally. Yellow

70

sunlight is all about energy. Wake up every morning and make a choice to emanate the sun’s positive glow. Green—Mother Nature—is at our doorstep. Blue(s) and Harmony. The polished chaos of artists grooving together. Violet and the spirit it invokes. Have you ever noticed that some of the first flowers to show their pretty heads at the very start of our frosty springs are violet purple. This reminds me of the spirit it takes to be ourselves, to break through the barriers that keep us from our true potential. Be well, be kind, be proud —“The Unstoppable” Conni Smudge

Caryl Dolinko MC Station #2 (Denman Place Mall) My name is Caryl Dolinko and I’ll be your Pride Parade MC in front of Denman Mall on Pride Day! I’ll be the one proudly wearing a rainbow shirt and I invite you to wear your Pride regalia too. I am a big fan of the Pride Parade and being able to host, and walk around, and talk to the crowds, and engage with people on floats is electric. I see my community come alive, light

up and shine on Pride day...I see us express, exude joy, sing, dance, clap and cheer, and we ask nobody for permission. We live bold, loud and free and that’s what I’m looking forward to seeing. Join me on Pride Day at the Parade on Denman at Nelson and share in the expression of diversity, freedom and love. Yours in Pride!—Caryl

Get ready! There are plenty of exciting events planned this year for Vancouver’s Pride Festival. And the only thing you’ll have to worry about is planning the days to make as many of them as you can, because the Vancouver Pride Society has already ensured that everyone can attend everything. Much of Vancouver’s park space is entirely open and accessible to everyone—regardless of ethnicity, demographic, or mobility—to enjoy this year’s festivities. Plus, with most events being free, or accessible by donation, it’s all that much easier to take part in the celebration while perpetuating good deeds at this year’s Pride! For further support, ASL interpreters will be on site at events to diminish language barriers experienced by those who wish to feel more a part of the many happenings around them. What’s more, spoken languages won’t be the only kinds clarified. The B.C. Rainbow Alliance for the Deaf will be in

74

attendance to bridge any disconnects experienced. It is important that all cultures are able to take part in this year’s celebration and feel like they’re a part of the festivities as well. For specifics about accessibility at each event, please consult the appropriate event pages.

ACCESSIBLE VIEWING ALONG THE PARADE ROUTE There are three main accessible viewing areas along this year’s parade route: one at the Robson Street Public Market, one at the West End Community Centre and an even larger one at Alexandra Park, next to the Boathouse. Accessibility Parking will be available at Alexandra Park. Please note, these accessibility areas are by reservation only. This way, we can ensure anyone who rightfully needs access is guaranteed a spot. To make a reservation, please call the Vancouver Pride Society’s office at 604-687-0955.

DEAF CULTURE 101 Deaf Culture refers to the values and communities revolving around signed languages and shared experiences of deafness. People who identify as culturally Deaf often do not see hearing loss as a pathology, but view it as a difference in human experience that acts as a gateway to a rich and vibrant culture. Like queer communities, Deaf communities often serve as second families and cultures—90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents. For this reason among others, Deaf and queer communities often run parallel to each other. A capitalized “Deaf” is used to identify as culturally Deaf, as opposed to just being deaf, which refers to the physical disability. However, the two aren’t mutually exclusive and many people identify as both Deaf and deaf.

Be aware that American Sign Language (ASL) is a full language with its own grammar and syntax. Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec all recognize ASL as an official minority language. Culturally Deaf people see themselves as a language minority rather than disability group. For this reason, the term “hearing-impaired” is offensive as the word “impaired” implies hearing as standard and anything different as hindered or damaged. Respect the rights of Deaf people to be proud and visible in public by not staring or interrupting if you see people signing with each other. Deaf people use a variety of communication strategies to communicate with hearing people, including gesture, writing down notes, and lip-reading. When interacting with a Deaf person, be patient and prepared to improvise!

How does it challenge your conception of disability to see it as a cultural minority? Interested in learning more about Deaf Culture? Have questions about accessibility? Come learn more from us at the signing spaces hosted by the BC Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf during Pride. The British Columbia Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf is an educational and social recreation organization for Deaf, deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, and DeafBlind People who are LGBTQ+, and their hearing allies. BCRAD hosts workshops, ASL classes and social events. BCRAD strives to have events in accessible and inclusive spaces. Beginner signers are also always welcome to join and practice their ASL. BCRAD is a nonprofit voluntary organization. If you wish to join as a member or make a contribution, please visit bcrad.com.

By Devon Taylor Pride Weekend is a time for fun, sun, and rainbows! However, on the day of the Parade and Sunset Beach Festival, it can get hot. When you’re making your way down to the West End to celebrate, make sure you bring a water bottle, good sunscreen, and a hat. You want to stay happy and healthy during Pride Weekend so do the old Slip, Slap, Slop! At the Pride Parade, make sure you get there early to stake out your spot! Bring a blanket or a chair to sit on so you can enjoy the parade in style. And if you want to have some fun, bring a water gun to cool of stifling parade participants!

After the Parade, make sure you stick around for the Sunset Beach Festival. You can visit our vendors or take a seat on the beach and enjoy the sunset. For any other health and safety concerns you may have on the day of the parade and festival, St. John’s Ambulance will be on hand to help. We look forward to seeing you at our events this summer! Happy Pride!

The Vancouver Pride Society and GAB Youth present a night of safe dancing and clean fun exclusively for youth under 25 years old. Age restriction enforced with valid photo ID. Entry by donation, with proceeds going to GAB Youth programs.

Last Door Recovery

GAB Youth

Last Door Recovery Society is a Vancouver-area Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centre and a non-profit organization that operates two core programs, the Last Door Adult Program and the Last Door Youth Program, as well as several adjunct rehab treatment programs for families and partners. The residential aspects of both programs are gender specific to males while the Family and Transitional living aspects are designed to facilitate both genders and all ages.

78

These are all hosted in world-class Vancouver Treatment Centers. Last Door places volunteers at the heart of its substance abuse programs. Its volunteers are mostly alumni of the rehab, substance abuse, and treatment programs and the thriving growth of the alumni base is an indicator of how well Last Door’s community model programs are working.

GAB Youth is for youth who are under the age of 26 and identify under the queer umbrella—lesbian, gay, bi, trans*, two-spirit, intersex, questioning, asexual, and allied youth! Our program is for everyone who wants to help create spaces safer from homophobia and transphobia. GAB Youth is turning nineteen this year and that is something to celebrate! This means almost two decades of youth programming like our annual Queer Prom, cabarets, and weekly Gab Youth drop-ins for youth between the ages of 14 and

25. GAB does training for anti-homophobia and anti-transphobia workshops for high school and elementary school students. This gives LGBTQ youth the opportunity to make a difference by sharing their stories and educating about bullying and oppression. Gab Youth empowers LGBTQ youth to be themselves, to learn the skills they need to not only survive, but thrive. Gab actively “makes it better” by providing safety and support for youth to feel included and celebrated in their communities. To learn more, please visit www.qmunity.ca.
