It is critical for parents to talk with their children about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and drugs. By Amy Graham
By Christopher Davis
As a parent, you play a vital role in helping your child avoid risky behaviors. Amy Graham, project director of STOP-ACT, Rogers County and Chelsea, offers parents tips on how to talk to your child about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and drugs: Start early. Make sure your child knows right from the start that you think it’s important to stay safe and avoid drugs. Many kids start using tobacco by age 11 and are addicted by age 14. Between ages 9 and 13, children start to think that using alcohol is okay. At age 12 or 13, some kids are already abusing drugs like marijuana or prescription pain relievers. The 5th annual Pecan and Fun Fest will be held on Saturday, October 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, October 20 from noon to 5 p.m. What better way to celebrate fall than amongst the turning leaves and pecan trees just outside Claremore along Route 66? Set a reminder, mark your calendar and prepare for a fun weekend of entertainment, food, sweets and shopping. Back in 2006, Hazel Ward went along with her husband and some friends to attend an estate sale at the roadside property of The Nut House, which had run into some trouble over the years. After a somewhat fruitless afternoon, Hazel and her friend decided to leave their husbands to their own devices and do some shop-
ping in town. Much to Hazel’s surprise, she received a phone call from a friend congratulating her on becoming the new owner of The Nut House. Her husband and his friend had purchased the building without consulting her! Mrs. Ward laughs it off, noting her husband is known for antics that would ordinarily drive a spouse “nutty.” Hazel’s ability to laugh and can-do spirit found her in the position of taking a historical retail outlet and building it into what it is today. The Nut House sells a variety of pecans from all over the country, as well as from their backyard. Additionally, they sell a variety of gifts and snacks, and offer a deli, a dining hall and an overwhelming selection of sweets, ranging from (continued on page 28)
Bicyclists in northeastern Oklahoma, plan to enjoy a great ride on Saturday, October 5 during the Dickens of a Ride bicycle tour through the beautiful rolling hillsides surrounding Claremore. The ride is sponsored by Claremore Main Street, Inc. and supports their many programs and projects throughout the year. Proceeds from the ride help fund preservation efforts, economic development, and special projects including planters, trees, benches and public art. Dickens of a Ride attracts cyclists from Oklahoma and adjoining states. Ride options include distances of 30, 50, 62 and 100 miles. And for those who like to do their bicycling in a more relaxed manner, there is a Lazy Lake Loop, which is approximately seven miles. This is a good ride for beginning cyclists or for young families. All bike routes begin and end at Gazebo Park at Muskogee Avenue and Will Hazel Ward, owner of The Nut House, and her daughter, Leslie Ward.
