MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD Kay Magnetti

The one constant in life is change. As you may have noticed, there are lots of changes happening in Valparaiso. For some, change elicits feelings of uncertainty and trepidation. Often, however, after the change has taken place, we sometimes see things through a whole new lens! Among the most notable changes around the Parks Department was the retirement of John Seibert, our fearless leader, park advocate and true citizen of Valparaiso! Under John’s leadership, our Parks, along with city leadership, have been recognized numerous times for both quality and innovation. John built his career on relationships, caring and communication. Luckily for Valparaiso, John has passed the torch to the warm, talented, and intelligent Kevin Nuppnau. It is without question that Kevin will lead us into a future of continued progress and success. Kevin is a Valparaiso native and a graduate not only of VHS in 2006, but also of Valparaiso University in 2011. He received his master’s degree in Sports Administration from Northwestern University in 2014 and worked in Chicago Jon Costas, Mayor for several sports marketing firms and for Northwestern University as the Business Bill Oeding, City Administrator Operations Director. Ultimately, Kevin returned home approximately five years ago Holly Taylor, Clerk Treasurer and has been part of the Parks Department ever since! We look forward to Kevin's Kevin Nuppnau, Parks Director leadership in 2024!

CITY LEADERSHIP

CITY COUNCIL Barbara Domer Diana Reed Ellen Kapitan Emilie Hunt Jack Pupillo Peter Anderson Robert Cotton

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Kay Magnetti Don Clark Kevin Cornett Mark Hardwick Martin Sonnenberg Tim Warner

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the Parks Department’s ability to adapt and evolve in the face of change. Valpo for All Generations, unveiled in the Fall of 2022, is the comprehensive plan to update and enhance our parks. Flounder & Friends Skatepark is the first initiative completed. Like many of our city’s projects, the skatepark came to fruition because of countless volunteers and donors, both private and public. The fundraising committee has exceeded $1,000,000 in private funds! Our skatepark is on track to be one of the best in the nation! Interested in volunteering or donating? Get on board! Last year, the city purchased a 248-acre parcel of land for the Sports and Recreation Campus, pegged at $30 million. The bids came back considerably higher and the project has been put on pause. Again, the Valparaiso Parks Department has planned a pivot. The focus will turn to improvements in our Legacy Parks, the heart of town. Stay tuned!

Change is good and there are always good things happening at the parks department! Looking to be part of the action? Contact any of us at the Valpo Parks Department.

SKATEPARK

Valpo Parks and Valpo Parks Foundation celebrated the grand opening of Flounder & Friends Skatepark on November 9, 2023. This newest park is 15,000 square feet and features a bowl in the shape of a fish, a musical manual pad, mini-ramp, a 6' high vert wall and other exciting street features.

skate hours Flounder & Friends Skatepark is open year round, weather permitting. The lights on the park enable parkgoers to enjoy the park for longer hours in the fall and winter months. December 1 - February 29 Dawn - 8 pm

March 1 - November 30 Dawn - 10 pm

history In 1997, Dug Ketterman led the planning of the first Flounder Skatepark, dedicated to his friend Ray “Flounder” Wampler. After 24 years, the City of Valparaiso sought Ketterman's expertise to rebuild. Through his business, DugOut Design Studio, they created the Flounder & Friends Skatepark, a tribute blending the original's spirit with a design inclusive of all skill levels. The skatepark not only honors Wampler's legacy but also provides a safe haven for skateboarders to thrive and progress.

one-of-a-kind elements FLOUNDER BOWL The Flounder Bowl serves as the origin or “heart" of the skatepark. The coping line shape of the bowl is inspired by the original green Flounder skatepark icon. The bowl features several varying radius pockets with steel coping, as well as, two tail fin extensions at the tail end of the bowl. These pockets are great for getting extra speed in and out of the bowl and are also perfect for slasher grinds on the hand-formed pool coping edges.

MUSICAL MANUAL PAD In honor of Ray “Flounder” Wampler, this manual pad plays the song ‘Bro Hymn’ by Pennywise, the song that was played at Ray’s funeral. In order to ‘unlock’ the the song, you need to land a manual (or roll on your front/back wheels only) across the whole pad. The saw-cuts in the concrete will be spaced to match the beat and essence of ‘Bro Hymn’.

MINI RAMP The standard mini ramp is a great place to learn all of your basic transition grinds and airs. This mini has a total of 44ft of flat coping split into two heights, 4ft and 5ft deep allowing you to progress your skills quickly. The mini ramp is bowled on both ends, providing 45 degree and 90 degree corners in the deep end and two hips with a hump bump which opens up to a flowy shallow end pocket.

Pictured: Dug Ketterman, designer of Flounder & Friends Skatepark and son Oliver Ketterman, testing out the Flounder & Friends Skatepark for the first time
