Our January Show is

Most of you who have lived here awhile or are familiar with Steamboat Springs’ long-time locals, know that John Whittum passed away last month on December 7, 2019, eleven days after his 88th birthday. News of John’s death came as a surprise to me and to a lot of other local residents who knew him. We are truly saddened to lose such a great man here in Routt County.

Almost a 60 year local, John truly knew the history of the area and beyond. I was fortunate to hear many of his stories right here in the Valley Voice office. Some stories, I will never be able to repeat. Some stories I wish I would have written down or recorded. Either way, we had wonderful conversations that I will cherish as long as I’m around.

John submitted many articles, stories and poems to the Valley Voice over the years. His first submission to the VV was in August 2012, titled “Marjorie’s Pond.” With many articles submitted and printed in between, John’s last submission was in October 2019, titled “Hogan: 1947-1977.”

He was always a welcomed contributor and visitor at the Valley Voice. Scheduled or not, I would always know it was John coming up the stairs to the office because he was a big teddy bear of man. I will never know for sure if he was taller than me because we were always sitting down with our heads in the monitor. After catching his breath, wearing his signature wool snap cap, we would visit for hours even before we started his current article review. Like me, I think he was a secret eye-roller.

John knew how to accept, or not, the surge of growth we all grapple with today. In this issue, I have reprinted one of John’s articles about the history of local growth, good or bad depending on what side of the fence you’re on. It is titled Tale of a Town: Part II: Commercialization (Page 20).

John was always involved in the look of his articles and had input/art direction for all my illustrations. He always wanted double page spreads without any ads next to it. In this issue, I can oblige. I picked this particular article from the archives, because his analogy of growth then still rings true today. John was extremely smart, insightful, kind and had a great sense of humor with a local spice we all enjoy.

I will miss him, his voice, and his company.

Next-Level Functionality

The last time I visited John was when he came into the office late last October to see the layout of the Hogan article.

John stated he wasn’t feeling that well lately and was worried he wouldn’t make it to his 88th birthday. That really hurt to hear. I said to him that if he needed anything, and I meant anything, I would be happy to help him with whatever he needed. We all know John’s strong independence throughout his whole life. He truly reminded me of my own father, except my dad was a professional curmudgeon eye-roller extraordinaire.

I considered John a very good friend and close to my heart with his talent and insight. I think we really enjoyed the laughter and each other’s company. I will miss you John. You are truly one of the “Greats.”

And with all the Valley Voice contributors in mind, I want to thank you all. Stampeding Toward Steamboat Springs!

For those that come to the Yampa Valley, the journey can take a little bit more effort than some of the other mountain communities. I often think back to the Crawfords and early settlers making the trip by horse and wagon amongst the many hardships encountered along the way.

But whether you visit for a brief time or live here for a lifetime, we all have found it’s worth the extra energy to be off the main highway for a magnitude of reasons.

Last month, Snowstang started making the journey quite a bit easier for people to travel between Denver and Steamboat Springs. That first bus was a welcome sight to many; however, it took a little while to get the horse out of the corral and lot of organizations working together to make the new service a reality.

After years of discussion and tenacity by city councilors, including Heather Sloop, the city’s transportation representative, the community was approached with the concept. The City of Steamboat Springs and Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. partnered with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to financially support the new option.

The city and the resort will split 60 percent of the total cost, roughly $15,750 each, with the remaining 40 percent of the program funded by CDOT. In addition, local companies stepped up to provide vital resources such as luggage service from Cowboy Carriers and overnight parking inside the heated Steamboat Springs Transit bus barn.

With 40 days of scheduled service as well as additional trips over the Martin Luther King, Jr. and President’s Day holidays, Snowstang brings an affordable means of traveling between the two cities roughly 160 miles apart.

With a snow storm raging across much of Colorado and feet of snow piling up along its inaugural route, Snowstang departed the Mile High City before dawn Saturday morning on December 14 and headed up I-70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel, across the valley floor around Kremmling and then over Rabbit Ears into the heart of the mountain village and the Gondola Transit Center (GTC). At the GTC, hungry powder skiers were dropped off and then the final leg down Mt. Werner into downtown to the Stockbridge Transit Center. The return Sunday afternoon trip sees a similar travel plan but just in reverse.

Many may believe the service is primarily for visitors, which has seen reservations from many folks outside of the state. However, bookings are already being made for one-way trips by Steamboat Springs residents.

From its Union Station location, Snowstang is adjacent the light rail that provides convenient connections to Denver International Airport and surrounding areas.

The pilot program during the winter could lead to more opportunities in the future for Steamboat travelers. CDOT is also examining incorporating Steamboat Springs into its Bustang Outrider program, which would link the Yampa Valley to CDOT’s year-round regional bus route in either Summit County or Grand Junction.

The Climate Action Plan

By John Spezia The Climate Action Plan for the City and County governments has just started up, with a very good presentation by the climate action consultant on November 19th at the City Council and County Commissioner's meetings. The projections revealed that the transportation footprint will continue to grow while the building footprints will stay the same – still a major problem.

The attempt to lower GHG emissions in these two areas will be challenging, as they are an intricate part of our economy, impacting every business, individual and company, big and small. History reveals that we typically put off difficult decisions and pay for the consequences later.

The common economic approach for businesses and individuals is to avoid expenses that impact their bottom line (it's called externalizing costs) and let the future pay for the externalized cost (it's called discounting the future). That is what our present society is doing to the next generations of young children with the emissions of GHG we now produce.

So how do we restructure our community and economy to make a major change? Recycling, composting and banning plastic bags are admirable goals but their GHG footprint impacts pale in comparison to buildings and transportation.

Who are the decision makers? Are the elected officials, business leaders, developers, tourism promoters, contractors, realtors, restaurant industry, service industry and community members going to rise above their immediate self-interests, their economic ties and the status quo?

We have waited so long that it is not a question of when we act but rather how fast and how much we are going to do to catch up. We know about all the solutions that have been sitting on the shelf for many decades. We know changing minds is going to be the most difficult task ahead of us.

The crux here is how are we going change the status quo that is embedded in everybody's economic DNA? In the past, Americans usually wait until they are between a rock and hard place and then act with such conviction and determination that the problem gets solved. Even if you don't notice the rock and the hard place in the Yampa Valley, it is here. If you live on the East or West Coast, or the Texas coast with cities flooding and hurricanes hitting, you notice it. Many of these areas are the source of the visitors who bring resources to our community's economy each year.

We are connected directly with the climate crisis in those places even if we don't notice it yet. It can happen here too. Just remember the winter in the early 1970s when we had no snow, or the runs last year that were frozen rock and ice. Steamboat Springs is the lowest elevation ski area in Colorado and more sensitive to temperatures than any other ski area. In the future, that wonderful dry light snow will be Cascade Cement or rain.

cal silver bullet to allow us to continue with business as usual. Electric vehicles alone will not solve the problem of transportation. We have to address the interaction between the location of affordable housing and jobs crisis by locating these together and creating an efficient and economic transportation system. We need a carbon footprint reduction process by the way of Climate Community Redevelopment Codes that apply to all the existing older homes, industrial buildings, commercial buildings and other structures. They make up to 99% of the carbon footprint of buildings in our area.

Our nation has made sacrifices at other times of crisis.

During our fight to survive as a nation in the 1940s, we grew victory gardens, purchased war bonds and recycled metals for our war effort. As parents we sacrifice a great deal to allow our children to succeed in this world. And if we want our children to succeed, we need to step up to the peril that they face with the climate crisis. We know that these sacrifices must be equitable and proportionally relative to each person's economic level.

The questions is: Will we demand an all out war against climate change by our elected officials and by ourselves to protect our community and our Earth? Will we change our lives now for a future that most of us will never live to see?

What is Steamboat Springs’ passenger vehicle carbon footprint?

The answer to this question is simply an understanding of chemistry and the application of 6th grade math skills. First step is to gather some facts.

What we know: According to the Colorado Department of Transportation the Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) at 7th and Lincoln is 27,000 vehicles.

According to the American Highway Institute (AHI) the average passenger vehicle is driven 13,500 miles per year or about 40 miles per day. According to AHI the average age of a vehicle currently on the road today is 12 years old.

The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards for passenger vehicle in 2007 (2019-12yrs = 2007) was 22.2 miles per gallon.

A gallon of gasoline weighs 6.3 pounds. When gasoline is burned it combines with oxygen in the air to from 20 pounds of Carbon Dioxide (CO2).

Most of the weight of the CO2 doesn't come from the gasoline itself, but the oxygen in the air.

There are 2,205 pounds per metric ton.

The Math: 27,000 x 40 miles per day = 1,080,000 aggregate miles driven per day. At 22.2 miles per gallon about 97,300 gallons are burned daily. At 20 pounds per gallon about 1,946,000 pounds of carbon are created or about 882 metric tons of CO2 per day. Over the course of the year Steamboat’s carbon footprint from vehicles is about 322,000 metric tons.

Your Money - Your Life

How Your Car Might Runover Your Retirement Dreams

I was out of town recently and had the opportunity to watch broadcast TV complete with advertising. I was surprised by the number of car ads. I can best depict these ads as a bombardment during the local news hour. I counted no less than 12 car ads in a 30-minute segment of the local news.

I now understand why I have been seeing so many vehicles around town with temporary license plate tags.

Without question this is a sign that consumer confidence is high. This is good news; however, the not so good news is that most American households are financing the purchase of these vehicles. Vehicle loan payments often make saving for emergencies, let alone saving for retirement, almost impossible for most families.

According to data from Experian below are the averages for the first quarter of 2019: • 85.4% of all new vehicle purchases were financed for a term of 69 months, with a loan amount of $32,187 at 6.16% interest rate for a monthly payment of $554.

• 55.5% of all used vehicles were financed for 66 months, with a loan amount of $20,137 at 10.1% interest rate for a monthly payment of $391.

The average length of ownership of a new vehicle was 79.3 months at the end of 2018, while the average length of ownership of a used vehicle was 66 months, according to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

If you do what the majority of American do and take out a 69-month car loan for a new car that you keep for 79 months, you'd never even go a full year without a car loan (you'd only get an 10-month break before buying a new car). If you bought your first car at age 25 and worked until age 65, you'd be making vehicle loan payments for all but six years of your entire 40-year working life.

Used-car owners who take out a 66-month loan for a car they keep for 66 months will never get a break from a car loan payment. This means the average American is almost constantly making vehicle loan payments during their working life. But what if you could instead divert some of this cash into savings?

Instead of buying that $30,000+ new car or $20,000+ used car, what if you instead bought a reliable used car that had a reputation for longevity such as a Honda Accord? According to Kelly Blue Book, the average price of a 2009 Honda Accord with less than 125,000 miles in Good to Very Good Condition when purchased from a Private Party was between $4,528 - $5,923. This vehicle was found to be one of the longest-lasting cars available; thousands of them are on the road with well over 200,000 miles. Most drivers put close to 13,500 miles per year on their cars, so if the car was just under 10 years old when you bought it and you drove it until it reached 200,000 miles, you'd have almost six years before you needed to replace this vehicle.

For the same $554 monthly payment you were paying for a new car, you could have a $5,226 loan for a mid-priced Honda Accord paid off in two years, assuming a 13.5% interest rate with a payment of about $250 per month.

After the loan is paid you wouldn't need another new car for around 3-1/2 years, so during this time you could save $275 per month that would go toward repairs and the purchase of your next car. From the beginning you could direct the other $275 that would have been going to your new car payment toward retirement savings. By the time the 3-1/2 years has passed and it's about time for a new vehicle, you'll have plenty of cash for another reliable used car. Pay cash for that vehicle, keep setting aside $275 for repairs and your next vehicle, and keep paying your $275 per month into retirement savings.

How much could you save? The average annualized total return for the S&P 500 Stock Index over the past 90 years is 9.8 percent. Albert Einstein is said to have called "the power of compound interest the most powerful force in the universe." Assuming you started this prudent financial practice at age 35 of saving $275 per month until age 65 you would have over $600,000. Start this same prudent financial practice at age 30 and have $1 million in savings. Or, you could continue to buy new cars and be flat broke at age 65. One needs to ask themselves if that new car smell is really worth it?

Johann J. Most debarked in New York from the Wisconsin December 18, 1882. That afternoon at the Great Hall of Cooper Union, he addressed the Revolutionary Socialist Party. Most, thirty-six, was an internationally renowned martyr and leader. In his native Germany, he spent several years in prison for revolutionary acts, and he published the inflammatory Freitheit. A short man, standing just over five feet tall, he was revolutionary through and through. At Cooper's Union, he told his listeners the revolution would be written in "blood and iron." After speaking in New York, he went on tour. In his speeches and writing, he advocated the use of dynamite and instructed listeners on how to use it. His pamphlets, The God Pestilence, The Property Beast, and The Social Monster sold tens of thousands of copies throughout the United States and Europe. Most's silhouette with a mustache and fisherman's hat became the popular symbol of the evil communist or anarchist.

Nationally, the Haymarket Riot set in motion a period of "police terrorism" as it was later branded. The color red was forbidden in advertisements and red neck scarves were outlawed. A common method for anarchists to identify each other was to wear a red scarf - thus a red neck. Nationally, newspapers ran stories of gigantic revolutionary conspiracies by blood thirsty communists and anarchists. Chicago policeman Captain Schaak fed the papers with stories of discovery of conspiracies featuring Most and his followers invading the city to dynamite, rape, and slit the throats of every honest man.

One follower of Most was the non-practicing attorney Burnette G. Haskell who organized the International Workers Association with offices in San Francisco, Denver, and Chihuahua, Mexico. Haskell developed a plan to dynamite all the government buildings in San Francisco by using a series of tunnels. He never followed through. The followers of Haskell and Most were never a large number; however, they had many imitators. Colorado has a long history of using dynamite to kill and destroy during labor wars.

In 1880, the silver vein of the Little Pittsburgh Mine pinched out. Before the true nature of the mine became generally known, owners David Moffat and Jerome Chaffee wanted to unload their stock at an inflated price.

They hired Pinkerton detectives to cause a strike which turned violent. The governor dispatched the state militia to Leadville to quell the violence and break the strike. With the Guard's backing, the Citizens Committee carried out a reign of terror on anyone they considered a trouble maker.

Today Americans agonize over the sharp divide between liberals and conservatives - a recurring theme in our history. Social Darwinism with its emphasis of survival of the fittest conformed well into Victorian upper crust elitism.

The other side reflected the great democratic thoughts of the nineteenth century: leveling, promoting the common good, equal justice, and the good of the people.

The local editor, Joseph R. Buchanan, was labeled a trouble maker and forced to leave Leadville. If he wasn't already a trouble maker before he left Leadville, he soon became one. He moved to Denver and began publishing the Labor Enquirer. Buchanan became a socialist with a strong commitment for the underdog. He was a skilled organizer and helped several Knights of Labor affiliates. In the strikes in which he played a role, the workers usually won. In the years between 1880 and 1900, Colorado had 213 strikes.

As an astute politician he realized the importance of the labor vote, and he used his skill to good advantage - passing several laws favoring child labor reforms and legalizing labor unions and contract negotiations which business and government usually ignored. Buchanan favored the eight hour a day work law. He also guided the Union Labor Party into a marriage with the Farmers Alliance to launch the Populist Party in Colorado. In the 1892 general election, the Populists showed real power, and observers believed it would replace the Democratic Party in 1896.

In Chicago in 1886, the intense struggle for economic freedom took a vicious turn. A year earlier, the McCormick Reaper Works was forced to restore a 15 percent cut in pay. Angered, the owners planned to break the union.

Three hundred Pinkerton Detectives and 200 policemen were hired to crush any labor resistance. Then McCormick locked out all union men and brought in "scabs." For weeks police units sought union men or meetings and bullied or arrested them. On May 3, the forces clashed, and at least two men were killed with several more wounded.

The following day at Haymarket Square, a group of anarchists met to protest the police action. Even Mayor Harrison attended the orderly meeting. Police Inspector Bonfield, (no relation) placed spotters in the crowd with instructions to report immediately any inflammatory statements or actions. Despite the peaceful nature of the meeting, Bonfield and Captain Ward marched 170 officers to the site. Just as the meeting concluded, Bonfield and Ward ordered the men to disperse. Someone threw a bomb, and the police charged wildly shooting into the crowd and their own ranks. Seven policemen were killed and sixty wounded. The number of civilians killed or wounded

was never reported. A serious investigation to determine who threw the bomb never took place, although seven anarchists were sentenced to death - four executed and one committed suicide. Six years later, Governor John P. Altgeld called the trial a "malicious ferocity" and unconditionally pardoned the other two.

Colorado elected the Populist Davis Hanson Waite governor and a Populist controlled legislature. After a brief stop in Leadville in 1881, Waite moved to Aspen where he joined his son-in-law Clarke Wheeler, a leading machine Democrat in the state. The short-lived partnership included a newspaper and several profitable mine ventures.

Waite soon joined George Rhode in the reform newspaper Union Era - a successful venture because both men were dedicated reformers and champions of the underdog.

Waite supported working people by proposing strong child labor laws, guarantees that laborers receive hard cash for wages, and regular paydays for workers. Mines, especially coal mines, often paid only in company script good at the company store. Many businesses, sawmills, and farms simply did not pay their employees when pay day came.

Workers were met with a gun and had no legal recourse but to leave. Waite also wanted strong anti-Pinkerton legislation. Pinkerton agents often performed acts of violence that were blamed on unions during strikes. Waite strongly opposed the level of corruption within the state. Colorado was corrupt to the core although proper Victorian on the surface.

Policemen and sheriff officers extorted extra pay from businesses - especially saloons, brothels, and gambling halls. The notorious Soapy Smith operated freely because he was useful to Colorado's upper crust. When they wanted a gun or a muscle for a little job, Soapy provided the favor for a price. Police and sheriff officers took care of Soapy - a cozy arrangement.

Waite set out to clean up the government. The key to reform in Denver was the commissioners on the Fire and Police Board. Waite attempted to remove Jackson Orr and D. J. Martin from the Board. Instead of leaving, they called on the gentlemen of the Red Light District for help. Guns and men soon arrived to fortify city hall. Waite called out the militia and a large crowd gathered near the corner of 14th and Larimer to observe the City Hall War. The upper level of Colorado businessmen did not want Orr and Martin removed, nor did they want real reform. Their iron control of the state's economy and political machinery depended upon money extorted from the red light district. They commonly hired a gunman, put him in a police uniform and asked him to take care of a problem. David Moffat, William Evans, Walter Cheeseman, Charles Kountze, and William Byers met with Waite and forced him to back down. Evans was known as Colorado's Napoleon and ruled the Republican Party with an iron fist.

Colorado's dominant business leaders wanted to defeat the Populist Party. "Graveyard Johnny" Voights offered the Republican Party a deal. Appoint him clerk to the lucrative district court and he would bring in the American Protective Association (APA). The APA was the forerunner to the KKK in Colorado which was anti-immigrant, anti-Irish, anti-Catholic, anti- labor, and anti-anything considered un-American. The Republican leadership agreed. With Graveyard Johnny's skill with "Repeat Voters" (for a fee, voters went to separate polling places and voted more than once), the APA won the election, but Graveyard Johnny was passed over for the district court. The office went to an APA faithful.

The Nature of Ice and Frost

Window frost forms when a smooth surface (glass pane, car hood, etc) has very cold air on the outside and warmer, more humid air on the inside. I have a single pane etched window in my mudroom that forms exquisite window frost. In essence, this is like having a snowflake forming in a two-dimensional plane (rather than the three dimensions snowflakes form in) right on your window. Imperfections in the glass surface influence the patterns. Stop and look at car windows on a cold morning and revel in the artistry of frost!

Unlike hoarfrost that usually forms overnight, advection frost, also called wind frost, can form day or night. It is associated with cloudy conditions, moderate to strong winds, no temperature inversion and low humidity. The temperature can remain freezing both day and night. A very cold wind blowing over tree branches, telephone poles, etc, leaves tiny spike-like crystals. The crystals can form along the edges of leaves and flowers, or one side of a pole as the wind deposits the crystals.

Black frost seems to be a misnomer, as it is not a true “frost” (in that crystals are formed). Also called “killing frost”, this is what happens when the humidity is too low for true frost to form, but plant tissues are damaged from freezing temperatures, turning the tissues black. Without a covering of insulating hoar-frost (and the release of latent heat that accompanies the freezing of water), plants are particularly susceptible to damage.

Years ago I was skiing on Rabbit Ears Pass after a cold, cloudless night. The snow was covered with these incredible frost crystals, some up to an inch tall like translucent butterfly wings. As I headed down a slope, the crystals moved along on top of the crusty layer and I heard the music of snow crystals: a tinkling, chiming, magical and enchanting sound that left me singing with joy.

Water can do amazing things, and to me water in its solid state, such as singing crystals, is the most fascinating. Ice is water in frozen, solid form. Below 32F water vapor develops into frost at ground level and snowflakes in clouds, and liquid water forms as a solid such as ice on lakes and rivers and hail (Encyclopedia Britannica). To understand how water is uniquely able to do this we need to look at the molecular makeup of water. Water molecules are made up of two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule aligned in a shallow “V” with the oxygen in the center.

From about 32F to 212F water is in liquid form. Slow the molecules down to about 32F and the hydrogen molecules lock together in a crystalline pattern. These crystals take up more space than molecules of liquid water, which is why ice is less dense than water and can float. The forming ice also creates a lot of pressure in a small space and can crack rock, pavement ,etc (oh, yeah, your water pipes in winter!) as it expands.

But I really want to focus on the ice that forms on the ground...frost! Just like snow crystals, frost crystals grow from water vapor in the air. “Frost is to dew as snowflakes are to raindrops. When water vapor condenses into liquid water, you get raindrops and dew. When water vapor condenses directly into ice, you get snowflakes and frost.” (snowcrystals.com from CalTech, great site!). While snow crystals form on dust particles high in the clouds, frost crystals form near the ground.

The most common types of frost are hoarfrost, also called radiation frost (from water deposition from air with low humidity), window frost (on smooth glassy surfaces), advection frost (from cold winds over cold surfaces), black frost (without visible ice at low temperatures and very low humidity) and rime frost (under supercooled wet conditions). To produce frost you need water vapor in the air over cold ground with a surface dew point at least as cold as 32F (weather.com).

When frost forms as minute crystals covering the ground we just call it frost. But as the crystals grow larger we call them hoarfrost (also called radiation frost). It tends to form on cold, clear nights and warmer days, with little wind, and typically an inversion is in place (whether large scale, as in over the whole valley, or small scale, as in a depression). All day the sun has been sublimating the snowpack (when water goes directly from a solid to a gas) and the water vapor has been moving up through, and often out of, the snowpack. The sun goes down and immediately the air cools, but the snowpack remains warm for some time, still sending water vapor to the surface, where it instantly freezes. Because of the molecular makeup of water these crystals “grow” into a variety of crystal types depending on the moisture in the air, temperature and length of time they form. Over several days, the “butterfly wing” surface hoarfrost can grow up to 2 inches or more long!. I call this surface hoarfrost, because hoarfrost forming on tree branches and plant stems undergoes a slightly different process. Think of this hoarfrost covering the branches as “frozen” dew. The more moisture in the air, the more intricate and larger the interlocking crystals of hoarfrost become. They, just as with surface hoarfrost, can continue to grow over days if the temperatures stay cold enough.

Granular forms of ice are called rime and are formed when supercooled water droplets in a freezing fog (explained in a moment...) freeze onto a surface colder than 32F forming combs, needles or feathery shapes. Low hanging clouds in winter often produce a freezing fog cooled to temperatures below 32F. The suspended water droplets have nothing to nucleate around so remain liquid water even as they cool below freezing, forming supercooled droplets (although at some point it is too cold and the water will freeze in the air forming fairy dust!). Water droplets remain in this suspended supercooled state until they bump into something where they freeze on contact. Add a little (or a lot of) wind and each successive droplet will be deposited on top of the other, forming combs, needles or feathers on one side of a branch, pole, etc. Rime is classified as hard or soft. Hard rime can be very dense and, without wind, will coat an object evenly all the way around (think of the ghost trees at the top of Storm Peak). With higher winds, hard rime forms on one side of trees and buildings in dense sugary looking comb-like formations.

During the winter when you are looking at snowflakes, you might come across crystals with a puffy powdery coating.

These crystals have been “rimed� on their travels through supercooled water droplets in the clouds. If the riming continues to where they just look like a blob rather than a crystal, they are then called graupel. Soft rime is softer looking, more like feathers. The crystals form when water droplets in light freezing fog or mist freeze to a surface with light or no wind. Soft rime looks a lot like hoarfrost, but they are formed differently, so tend to create different types of crystals. Remember, hoar develops when water vapor freezes (going directly from the gaseous to solid state), while rime forms where supercooled liquid water droplets freeze on contact with cold surfaces (liquid to solid state).

I truly do. Because I have hope for you, for myself and the world in general. Of course, I don’t know the world as well as I know you or myself, but I have hope.

In the movie The Matrix, the character known as the Architect chides the hero Neo for making a decision “Hope. It is the quintessential human delusion, simultaneously the source of your greatest strength and your greatest weakness.� Spoken like a heartless passionless program.

As I write this, inspired at 5am, we are heading toward a special time of the year. It is of course the beginning of a New Year. It is also the beginning of a New Decade. Years ahead that are unwritten and full of potential. Yes, yes, we are “heading in a direction� and yet we can, like in our past and the past of others, change course and choose to do a thing differently. I offer this to you – make a change for the better.

If we keep marching down the same path day after day, we surely will end up at the same destination that is not only predictable but worn out as well.

Take a class. Go to that OTHER restaurant. Say hello to those people and do it with a curiosity about them. Get a pet. Ask someone out – knowing they most likely will say no. But do it because you need to take a chance that doesn’t break any laws, cause a traffic accident or harm a small child. Take a chance! Change your path for the better.

As I sit watching the sun poking at the horizon, I am hopeful. Potential is out there waiting for us to reach for it.

The skateboard does not do the tricks without us. Get on it and take a ride. See where you go and smile along the way.

We are not heartless passionless programs. We are fabulous beings of light, sound and matter. We are simultaneously a particle and a wave. And most importantly we are and can be full of hope.

In the coming hours, months and next decade – You will find in yourself a greater connection, peace and true happiness. From this simple perspective, all other choices and potentials flow.

You will find a great career path; one with purpose and province. You will find your place in the world. You will find a greater connection with another human being who thinks you fart rainbows, kiss with perfection and love with singular intent.

These things ‌. I believe. Happiness to you dear reader.

Speculation for the New Year

Brewery gets Bigger

I bumped into Hayden Mayor Tim Redmond the other day, and we talked about how the whole idea of reusing the existing stage, auditorium, gym and nearby rooms at the current high school seems to be up in the air.

The Yampa Valley Brewery’s plans for a bigger tap room and brewery are still moving ahead and involve moving one block from the current tap room/brewery, to 200 N. Walnut, just west of the historic Hayden Granary complex.

First of all, there’s the idea of the town buying the proposed reuse facility for $50,000. I realize that the school board has fiduciary responsibilities, but why $50,000?

Why not $5, since the town and school district have huge overlap in taxpayers and potential users of the reuse facility?

Second, the board says it has to finalize the sale by March, because that’s when demolition contracts for the old facility have to be let. Trouble is, that’s before the town would be able to hold a special election in April or May, to ask taxpayers to approve a 1 percent sales tax increase that would pay for needed repairs and upkeep of the proposed reuse facility, or community center.

And while a recent survey indicates wide public support for the community center, there’s no guarantee of passage.

Buying the property for $50,000 would put the town on the hook for fixing it and running it, before voters approved the funds to do so. That’s pretty high risk.

Mayor Tim also speculated that there could be a developer/investor waiting in the wings and waiting for the dust

to settle on this timing issue between the school board and the town council. That mystery developer might not want the controversy of the community debating private versus public control of the proposed community center. If the town backs off, the mystery developer could step in and buy the property, as part of his larger vision of what to do with the current middle/high school site. It might be a brilliant plan, but we don’t know because the school board ain’t talking, according to Redmond.

We don’t know if a white knight developer is just waiting to ride in and rescue the situation.

If there is no white knight out there, however, this whole deal could fall apart – demolition contracts would be let, and everything bulldozed out of existence.

That would be tragic and should not be allowed to happen.

I’m hoping that the school board, the town council and the state’s BEST officials can come together and work out the timing. If voters don’t approve the 1 percent sales tax, maybe that’s the best time for a white knight to show up and rescue the day.

If there is a white knight.

But maybe we, the town’s voters, are the real white knights. Let's get this right.

An updated logo has been developed, as well as a new website – all in keeping with an artist rendering of the new facility and a schematic, developed by Axial Arts.

The 200 N. Walnut building has been used by several businesses, including a town workshop. The existing main level will be remodeled for a larger taproom. The north side of the building will be bumped out for a brewery that can handle greater production levels. An apartment on the second level will remain.

“We are looking at the option to provide a food truck on the interior of the building during the winter that would then move outside during the balance of the year to support the Granary vision,” said Paul Brinkman, a Steamboat-based investor in both the brewery and Granary.

The new taproom will open in spring or early summer, said Brinkman, while the new brewery addition on the north side should be completed in the summer.

Of Cannonballs and Language

By Wolf Bennett Here is a famous puzzler.

First, a couple definitions: Unstoppable: this means that whatever it hits, it will go right on, blasting through anything. It will not bend, blow up, slow down, disintegrate or bounce. Absolutely nothing will happen to the cannonball – it will just keep going as if nothing was in front of it.

Immovable: this absolute means that nothing that hits it will change it in any way. It won’t bend, break, explode, chip, disintegrate or crack. Nothing will alter it in any way.

Everything bounces off. Once you learn the answer you will probably see that many of our grandest ideas to be rather flawed, if not outright wrong.

So, what happens when an unstoppable cannonball hits an immovable post?

Something has to give, right? So what exactly is wrong with the statement? I lived in Japan for some time and my biggest lesson was that I didn’t have the answers that I thought I had. I knew a great deal less than I had supposed and was sorely humbled. While my logic was reasonable and well trained (as most of us believe ours is), this question exposed another flaw. I had very big awakenings in store.

I learned that there is no such thing as a translation (though we are certainly taught and often believe that our phrasebooks and dictionaries are direct and accurate and that we are making sense). There is always an interpretation, some of which are pretty good concerning simple things, but most often severely flawed when we consider anything more than the simple names of things (ever have a travel experience where the local just looks at you with a blank stare?). Interpretations consequently affect and tweak every sentence and idea you will ever have.

Some interpretations are better than others, but they always affect translations in some nuanced way. For example: Ben and Jerry’s introduced a new ice cream flavor while I was in Japan called “Chunky Monkey.” The translators spoke both Japanese and English, so one would think it quite simple. Not so… the translation label printed was “Bits of Monkey Meat.” Needless to say, it was not a big seller. Yes, it sounds very funny to us, but be careful, for as you can see, you are probably heavily mistaken in how well you think you are being interpreted, even in your own language.

Every language and local dialect has flaws, interpretations and confusions that create issues with our lives. Our very speaking tones, accents, drawls and nuances drive our very positive view of ourselves and what we think we are communicating. Language is one of the basic keys to our identities and the tribes we choose to be a part of.

Choosing to communicate well takes great effort, challenge, heart, understanding and the ability to admit error.

These are uncommon traits in our general culture and yet absolutely critical to making our lives easier, richer, fun and safer.

There is a famous error that most people make referred to as “the anthropologist's mistake.” I did this when I first

moved to Japan. It happens when we choose to measure another culture by using our own culture as the “correct” measuring stick. We either soon discover that we are NOT the only correct ones with the one true language and the one correct interpretation of anything or we just get arrogant and judgmental, thus understanding little. The difficulties and misunderstanding are compounded by our beliefs, training and attitudes. Be aware that English actually has quite a few more interpretive errors as it’s such a melting pot of languages and cultures. Look at the USA today and you can see many ramifications of these concepts. So it behooves us to give a little slack and clean our own nests before we criticize or measure others.

Words matter. Logic matters. Philosophy matters. So does punctuation, understanding, awareness, humor, heart, speech patterns and interpretation. They all take work, which is very fun actually, but work nonetheless. Unless of course, you have no intention of being understood.

Sometimes quite obviously, sometimes subtly, language that we hope is functional is heavily confused and nowhere near the accurate tool that we think it is. Look at current politics, conspiracy theory or denial articles and you will see not only huge breaks in logic and argument flaws, but looking deeper you will see massive problems with interpretation. These are there for many reasons like fear, prejudice, self-righteousness, tribalism and anger but more deeply they are there because we have simply not understood that there is great weakness in our very tools of communication, the words themselves and how we choose to see them.

In German there is Gemutlichkeit. The dictionary translates as “good feelings” and “good cheer,” but this is not fully accurate nor is it how the word is actually used.

Gemutlich is used both when a group of friends are at a party and dancing and having a great, boisterous time.

Or used when a couple is having a close, quiet moment or perhaps during a wedding, christening, welcome of friends across your doorstep or a myriad of other experiences. So what does it really mean? Gemutlich cannot be translated and yet we make an effort to define a feeling that is quite nebulous and yet very powerful.

Feelings are like clouds and defy definition and shape.

Feelings should not be easy to define – they are necessarily messy things. Like a thunderstorm, you cannot see the internal stuff and all that composes such a cloud. The dynamic mystery is what gives feelings beauty and power.

Mental prowess and structured thought actually get in the way of a rich, deep feelings that fill our lives. Our culture encourages the structure of translation, “accurate”, absolute words, much to our loss and confusion.

I learned a few years back that when someone says, “I have a problem skiing moguls," that really means that there is a flaw in their skiing and the bumps simply prove it. Bump skiing is difficult primarily because every skill is being used quickly and simultaneously. If there is a flaw in any one aspect, then bumps will be a problem.

The way to fix that is go back to the basics, understand the issue through research and openness, train that aspect correctly and keep practicing it as habits don’t change readily. Practicing something incorrectly can yield its own set of issues, so be aware.

The answer to the original question as you probably know by now is actually quite simple - you cannot have two opposing absolutes in the same universe. Simply put – you have a problem with your language. The language itself is flawed. Also important to remember – it can’t be fixed. We all get to live our entire lives with tools that are not quite up to the job that we want them to be, or actually believe them to be.

Be very careful with absolutes of any type. Be aware that language is often flawed, dynamic and inaccurate. Practice awareness, laugh and feel deeply. Question generalizations, prejudices, biases, interpretations, charismatic claims, sanctimony, absolute positives, Hallmark cards, history and beliefs. So enjoy the dance of communication, for you are both in and out of balance at all times and you must trust your partner.

Whitesplaining, Mansplaining, and the Others

There are two ways to do the energy transfer; hands-on and hands-off. I prefer to use the hands-off method, which allows my hands to float about an inch or so away from the person’s body. I like to do it this way to respect my client’s personal space as one sometimes doesn’t always know a client’s history with touch. I also find that people feel more comfortable and are able to focus on the energy flow without the sensation of touch as a distraction.

As old as the healing modality of Reiki is, it’s still largely unknown and sometimes misunderstood by many. I’m here to share some information on this energy work technique that originated in 1920s Japan with Dr. Mikao Usui, whom it’s also named after.

Reiki is based on the concept that all living things contain an energetic life force, called Universal Life Energy. It’s the very energy that moves through our bodies at a cellular level, all the way through to the chakra energy centers (more on that later). Because of this, the practice of Reiki can help to heal at many levels; from easing chronic pain to bringing balance in the mental, emotional and spiritual states of being.

Here’s how it works: the Universal Life Energy flows through the practitioner (preferably by an attuned Reiki Master) as they lay hands in specific positions over the body, beginning at the head and ending at the feet. It’s best if the practitioner is attuned to at least the Second

She kept reciting nonsense phrases like “supercalifragileisticexpialadosis.” Whatever you do, never hire a nanny named Mary Poppins.”

-“I learned about a most remarkable American company during a Routt County Wheelman cycling society lecture at the Catamount estate last week,” said Col. Chester Edwin Fannybandit of Warburton-upon-Hayden. “This woman named Big Agnes has a company that takes lightweight, waterproof fabrics and turns them into affordable housing. They also make a quilted bag and inflatable mattress for when you lie back and think of England. It caused me to think this fabric would make the most ingenious of undergarments. Cool and comfortable, these sheer trousers and pantaloons would also offer complete chastity to the wearer.”

The institution of afternoon tea in England has been practiced for centuries and is experiencing a revival with the popularity of such programs as Public Television’s Downton Abbey, or Masterpiece Theater’s Poldark and the like. Regal and civilized, afternoon tea offers participants the opportunity to share one’s thoughts and observations with the group on topics as limitless as the sky.

-“Ran into this fellow named Kidd while strolling on the avenue and he was wearing the most extraordinary hat,” said Grottospendthrift. “It had a wide brim and colorful plumage on the crown. He called it a cowboy hat. A local haberdasher sold me a similar model for $6.98. They wouldn’t take my quid and bob so I had to trade it at the local currency exchange. Tremendous inconvenience.”

So what if a group of English Victorian era aristocratic ladies and gentlemen traveled through time, relocated to Steamboat and held their high tea in our current environment? Their adjustment to our local lifestyle could at times be frustrating and excerpts from the conversation might go something like this;

-“You simply can’t find good Welsh rarebits and figgy pudding at any eatery in this town. And even though they have a weekly rodeo circus in the summer, I have exhausted my search in trying to find a buggy whip,” said Fannybandit.

-“Do you like the tea? I think it’s most refreshing and liberates one’s taste buds,” said Sir Theophilus Shepston of Sexton-on-Toponas. “I detect notes of East Kent Golding peppermint and star anise on the nose. The pekoe’s citrus is downplayed, yet there is slight evidence of hibiscus flower. I purchased the tea at a place called a dispensary. May I have another scone? I’m suddenly extremely hungry.”

-“Speaking of scones, I need to find another cook,” said Lady Batmountain of Derwent-on-Dream Island. “Their scones the other day were dreadful. We spent several hours picking service berries in the field and the end result was a biscuit so hard I saw the coachman using the

Tale of a Town Part II: Commercialization

Sustained by a triad of cattle ranching, coal mining, and tourism, the town, though not always prosperous, had escaped severe cycles that plagued less diversified economies. It could also boast a county seat, a link on a major transcontinental highway between two major cities, a long history of skiing events, and a spectacular mountain setting unmatched by other municipalities.

Perhaps because of these advantages in the early postwar years, the city fathers, unlike the leaders of most fast-growing towns, made the decision NOT to tax real property. These officials apparently believed that sufficient revenue for city expenses could be provided by sales tax receipts. Most of which, they apparently speculated, would be paid by rich tourists in summer and winter, and by equally wealthy hunters in the fall.

On the heels of the nation’s 1960s cultural revolution, the town’s population surged at a staggering rate. Prices for land jumped so quickly that old-time ranchers, who had labored through hardscrabble conditions, were relieved that they could make a sizable profit. But their eagerness to sell out was welcomed by an avid fervor to buy in. Already prosperous property owners and a new wave of speculators were quick to sense enormous profits to be made.

Main Street merchants became excited that students at the summer camp, the private school, and the college were beginning to spend large sums of money. An association of businessmen was formed to promote closer ties with teachers, but the business interests did nothing to address the educators’ concerns and, consequently, the same same “Business-Education Week” quickly disintegrated.. The teachers resented being patronized by opportunistic merchants, who had yet to embrace the real value of improved education.

For the next few decades the town’s major voices – those who spoke from its banks and businesses, its major industries, its newspapers, and its government – insisted on promoting the town as truly unique. They advertised a small town of near perfection. “It’s why we live here” became the mantra of agents thriving on, and salivating over, the prospect of selling more property. Despite the burgeoning evidence of noisy street and sidewalk congestion during the major tourist seasons, their marketing persisted.

Originally surrounded by bucolic meadows, the town soon metastasized into a resort city enveloped by suburban sprawls. Some investors, who built or bought profitable rental units, forced less fortunate citizens to occupy cheaper houses often some distance away from the old town’s center. Affluent residents sometimes became part-time, returning to their homes only during the off-seasons. Average size homes that used to dominate older residential neighborhoods were slowly modified by additions to enlarge living space and thus secure higher rents, or were entirely replaced by new squat and stolid structures that reduced the open spaces once occupied by yards and gardens.

The city then made a second decision to side-step what other resorts were implementing: a real estate transfer tax. Arguing that a tax on the sale of property would inhibit growth, the town relinquished the possibility of collecting sizable income on real estate transactions.

While members of the town’s “underclass” sometimes shopped at other communities to avoid paying the local high sales taxes, they were not indifferent to the absence of any kind of tax on the huge sums expended by buyers of real property. Unfortunately for all – except the real estate industry - a state-wide clamor of anti-tax populism produced several constitutional amendments prohibiting or discouraging any moves to restore what opportunities the city had let slip by.

In the end, the city was compelled to confess its needs had become “insatiable.” Providing minimal living conditions for the working class, remodeling and upgrading current recreational facilities to compete with other resort centers, and establishing elaborate new diversions to attract ever more tourists, the town continued to subsidize the resort industry in a vicious circle that brought in more people to generate more tax. The direction of city government had been captured by the commercial interests.

In the meantime the four-year private college founded by the two ladies’ successors had fallen heavily in debt.

Attempting its rescue, its trustees, then sold the remaining assets to an out-of-state university which maintained a dozen international educational institutions. In their hasty desire to be rid of this defaulting institution, those same trustees belatedly realized the buyer was a real estate scam.

The college library, much of it donated by local residents, was the first item to be sold off.

A few years later, and in an entirely different spirit, a group of more progressive and far-sighted businessmen promoted the concept of a six-county, publicly supported college, to which voters would pay a property tax in return for reduced tuition and other benefits. Opinions were divided of course, but the majority of the town’s voters, the country residents, and those of five adjoining counties, chose to tax themselves and thereby reinstitute a facility of higher learning. It was a remarkable event considering the town’s historic opposition to taxing itself, yet perfectly consistent with the citizens’ century-long quest for better education. And, it was a move that foreshadowed other contentious battles between the real estate and resort industries’ obsession over profits and the citizens’ desire for a more balanced approach to community life.

Chronic Inflammation

By Kari Pollert There has been a lot of talk in recent years about chronic inflammation and it’s connection to degenerative diseases.

Let’s differentiate between acute and chronic inflammation. Acute inflammation happens quickly when we have an injury like a burn, cut, tear, sprain, fracture, etc. Our body brings in the troops for healing, sealing, splinting, and repairing. Once the repair process is adequately underway, the acute inflammation gradually subsides and runs its course.

But what about chronic inflammation? What is the driver of it? And why can it sometimes remain for prolonged periods of time, even indefinitely? As with acute inflammation, chronic inflammation comes from damage to tissues, but this is from ongoing irritation creating defense physiology. Inflammation is your body’s way of tagging and clearing out dead or dying cells as well as harmful bacteria, pathogens, and irritants. To facilitate the clearing out process, your body may produce fluid, swelling, mucous, or even diarrhea in an attempt to push away damaging substances.

Our modern-day lives involve many more toxic factors than in the time that our grandparents lived. Some of these toxic influences include: 1) Sugar: Not only does sugar damage our tissues, but it does not provide any useful materials to aid in its own digestion and uptake. It is a net negative to the body. It also creates insulin resistance whereby our cells can only allow a certain amount of glucose to enter the cell, and it must leave the rest outside of the cell, even with the glucose-escort, insulin, knocking at its door. The cell must ignore the knocking because it is already full. The remaining sugar outside of the cell stays in the blood creating high blood sugar and tissue damage.

4) Antibiotics given to people: Contributes to gut inflammation by killing beneficial bacteria.

5) Trans-fats: (also called partially-hydrogenated or fully-hydrogenated fats and oils) These are synthetically processed fats used in refined foods to extend shelf-life in the grocery store. They are unusable by our bodies and are very difficult for the liver to break down.

6) Rancid fats: These are highly toxic to the body and are carcinogenic. The refining of fats and oils using chemicals and high heat causes them to breakdown structurally.

This is rancidity. Rancid fats and oils are smelly. So to mask this smell, the commercial food industry de-odorizes them so you don’t smell them anymore. Natural fats in foods remain intact for longer when they are used in a timely fashion and not overheated.

7) Over-hybridized foods: Hybridization is not inherently a damaging process and has been used by cultures around the world for centuries. But modern-day hybridization has taken place rapidly over the past few decades, at such a pace that the human body has not been able to adapt.

Wheat is a good example here, where the gluten protein has been changed so quickly that it has now become an inflammatory agent for many people.

8) Genetically-engineered foods (GMOs): These are foods that have been altered at the genetic level in a laboratory through gene-splicing to create a commercially desired outcome. The most well-known outcome is that GMO crops can withstand being sprayed with Roundup and they still survive. A couple other examples are: tomatoes that are grown in a square shape so they package and ship better, and apples that don’t turn brown after slicing.

2) Hormones given to meat animals: These are given for growth to fatten them up for a better price in the market.

Hormone residues stay in the meat that we eat.

9) Low-level pathogens: Many pathogens go undetected, yet cause damage to tissues. Molds, fungus, viruses, harmful bacteria, and parasites are examples. These are stealth pathogens and cause chronic infection.

3) Antibiotics given to meat animals: 70% of the antibiotics produced in the US are given to meat animals either by injection or in their food. These residues also stay in the meat that we eat.

At the front desk, the phone squawked for the second time. The clerk paused turning to the new girl, "This light is our internal network; a hotel guest." She picked up the receiver, "Hello, front desk?"

The new girl, who had been on the clock for barely an hour now, nodded, watching carefully. So far, she seemed attentive; she was asking the right questions and appeared to be getting a handle on the job. But it was way too early to tell if she was going to survive or not. The job wasn't overly complicated, but it often got hectic, very hectic.

Swimming through an ocean of needy customers with a smile required a whole lot more patience and grace than most people expected.

Finding the right person hadn't been easy, they'd been short handed for weeks now. One guy had stormed out after only half a day. Let's face it, dealing with the public isn't for everyone. The clerk was trying to be especially delicate with the training, so as not to scare this one off.

Of course, you couldn't learn to swim until you dove in...

The clerked tipped the receiver for the new girl to listen.

The woman on the line hesitated, like she was sidestepping some unpleasantness. "Yeah, hi... This is three-twentyfour... Um, there's, uh, something on the floor up here. We need someone to come pick it up."

The woman in 324 threw the door open then quickly retreated. The clerk bravely stepped into the room, the new girl peered over her shoulder. A middle-aged woman and her teenage daughter stood with their backs to the wall as if someone had dropped a live cobra in front of them.

"It's there," The woman pointed. "Just past the bed. It must've been under the bedspread, we didn't see it until I pulled the blankets back."

"Okay, what exactly are we talking about?" The clerk coaxed.

There was something small and round in the middle of the carpet. It was tan sort of color, barely noticeable. There was a shine to it like it might be wet--that was never a good sign. Latex gloves at the ready, the clerk moved closer, maintaining her professional facade. The new girl followed dutifully.

They could hear giggles in the background, "I-I kicked it out from under the bed, that's all the contact I care to have with the thing!"

They stood over the object, staring down at it. It was a small rubbery disk, rolled up around the edges, like a long ballon peeled down flat. Only it wasn't a ballon.

Inside her head, the clerk rolled her eyes, playing fifty questions with a grown-assed women seemed stupid waste of time. But on the outside she kept it professional, doing her best to set a good example. "Alright, we'll be right there."

"It's a condom!" The new girl blurted.

Perplexed, the new girl cocked her head. The clerk nodded: yeah, it's like that!

She hung up the phone and turned to the new girl, "Up for a walk?"

Leaving the front desk in the hands of the clerk's partner, they set out. The new girl looked baffled, "We just checked that lady in, right? She and her daughter. What could they've possibly found on their floor?"

"Who knows." The clerk shrugged, b-lining for the janitorial closet. "It could be anything. Whatever it is, I bet we'll need these." Grabbing a box of disposable latex gloves, she winked at the new girl.

The new girl trotted behind her as they headed to the elevator, "Should we call the maids?"

The woman stared at her with shock. "Uh, n-no. Thank you."

"Maybe." The clerk replied pushing the button. "But let's see what we're dealing with first."

The clerk smiled, impressive. This one might be ready to swim after all.
