Valley Art welcomes artists

Gallery open Mon.–Sat. 11 a.m.–5:30 p.m. and special occasions.

Gretha Lindwood, Jeff Harness, Lanai Kinsky and Jan Youngman

Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Four artists will grace Valley Art with their work during May and June. The four will hold a reception, and will demonstrate their artistry on Saturday, June 6, 2-4 p.m. “Crisp,” “refreshing”, and “vivid” are three words that come to mind in describing Gretha Lindwood’s plein air style. “These paintings are created en plein air—or, on location in the open air—where the sights, sounds, colors and smells

are most vivid.” Gretha’s history is of the Pacific Northwest, and she earned a professional diploma at the Burnely School of Professional Art in Seattle. In 2008, she won the “Best Use of Color” Award from the Paint-Out Group at the ArtReach Gallery in Portland. Since then she has won recognition at other galleries and festivals including a Juror’s Award at the Northwest International Open Exhibition in

Glorious Colors of Life... Tacoma, and “Best Pastel” and “People’s Choice” awards at the 19th Annual Carmel Art Festival in California. But, it is the Pacific Northwest to which she returns because, in her words, “I cherish oru unique landscapes honed by water and time and delight in capturing their beauty in the losh colors of pastels or oils the share with the viewer.” Her work is featured in a number of galleries across the Portland metropolitan area as well as on the Oregon coast. Lanai Kinsky is a native of the American Southwest, and is struck by the contrast of the environment in the Northwest. Having the opportunity to see the remarkable variety and vitality of the American landscape, Lanai gains immense satisfaction from painting the wonders she sees across the width and breadth of this country. Even what some might consider the mundane world of dusty tractor plumes is a subject for her pastel palette. Learning through Roberta St. Louis, Lanai continues to paint from

scenes all across America. This transplant from New Mexico has contributed greatly to the artist landscape in Washington and Oregon, and in addition to painting, she is a published bead artist, teaching off-loom bead weaving.

A creation in progress by Jeff Harness

Jeff Harness is also a migrant to the Northwest, having been born in Branson, Missouri and growing up in the area around Hannibal. Largely self-taught in the artistry of wood carving, Jeff does give credit to Jeff Phares, Marv Kaisersatt and Philip Faraut, from which he benefited in the their instruction. He also gives a tip of the hat to the characters created by Disney and Hanna-Barbera, when, as a younger Jeff Harness, he drew his own cartoon strips. As Jeff puts it, he is retired from the semiconductor world, and now has “moved from silicon chips to wood chips.” And he focuses on the three-dimensional art form of head busts and caricatures. The question asked, and answered, by Jan Youngman is, “Why do I paint?” And the answer is probably one shared by any artist in any medium, be it paint, photography, wood, or music. There is something magical about taking a blank canvas and creating something from nothing. That is the same challenge Ernest Hemingway says he faced everyday with the blank piece of paper in the typewriter, calling it “The White Bull”.

valleyart.org

Like Jeff and Lanai, Jan migrated to the Northwest. Her journey in art began in the Big Apple on Governors Island in the 1960’s. She took classes at the Seamen’s Institute on Wall Street, and, in 1970, when the family was transferred to Portland, she continued her exploration into painting and art with classes at Portland Community College, and memberships in the Oregon Society of Artists, Painters’ Showcase, and Lake Area Artists. And, there is one final part of the answer to the question: “Why do I paint?” For Jan, “It’s the process and great friends that keep me motivated to continue this wonderful journey for the rest of my life”. That might well be the raison d’etre for all our artists this month. A chance for continued self-expression, a venue for making friends, and a desire to experience the overarching beauty of this land around us.

The Reception for our artists will be from 2–4 p.m., Saturday, June 6 at Valley Art, 2022 Main St. in Forest Grove. Complimentary refreshments will be served, but with our artists’ work, nourishment of the soul will be paramount.

DIY Foam Paint

The school year is winding down and soon you’ll hear the familiar refrain, “But I’m bored!” Why not fire up young artsist with a fun art project? This recipe makes puffy foam paint for creative art projects.

Supplies you will need: 1 can shaving cream, 1 bottle white paper glue, food coloring, zip lock bags, paper plates Mix equal parts shaving cream and glue into a zip lock bag, add your desired food coloring and then, with the bag sealed, squish the bag together until all your ingredients are nicely mixed together. Cut a very small corner off the bottom of the bag so the paint can be squeezed out— they don’t even need brushes! Have your little artists create with these paints on paper plates or cardboard. When they are finished, set aside the art to solidify overnight.

How can you become a Valley Art Volunteer? Drop by the Valley Art Gallery or pick up the phone and call
