It is currently headed by Canadian Karyn Thurmeier and Rafael Pereo, who has almost 40 years of experience doing tattoos. “Although I do a bit of everything, what I like to do the most is realism. In fact, I recognize that here in the city, I have colleagues who are very good with this same style.”

Realism: Definition

“As its name indicates, this style reflects a real image, either using a photo for reference or using a direct image of something appearing in nature. These are demanding tattoos that require a lot of knowledge, experience, talent, and dedication to achieve that kind of quality and perfection. Characteristics of the composition of a realistic design include shading and lots of detail with no sharp lines.”

Vallarta abrió sus puertas en 2008. Actualmente es encabezado por la canadiense Karyn Thurmeier y Rafael Pereo, quien tiene una experiencia de casi 40 años realizando tatuajes: “Aunque yo hago un poco de todo, lo que más me gusta hacer es el realismo. De hecho, reconozco que aquí en el destino hay colegas que son muy buenos para trabajar con este mismo estilo”.

“Como su nombre lo indica, este estilo plasma una imagen real, ya sea sobre una foto de referencia o directamente sobre algo natural. Se trata de tatuajes exigentes que requieren de mucho conocimiento, experiencia, talento y dedicación para poderse lograr con calidad y perfección. Las características propias de la composición de un diseño realista incluyen sombreado y muchos detalles sin líneas definidas”.

For Pereo, inspiration is a fundamental part of his work, and his goal is to achieve visual harmony on the body. “This is like writing a song, where each element has its place to help highlight the overall composition of the work. I am inspired by animals and the essential elements of life—water, fire, earth, and air—to be able to make each of my tattoos. Art has no limits.”

With the passage of time and observing the potential of tattooing in Puerto Vallarta, the studio organized the 2015 Expo Tattoo event with the objective to celebrate and promote this type of art in the region. That first edition was held in the Salón Real del Oro in El Pitillal and, in addition to involving other local tattoo artists, all the proceeds, both in cash and food donations, went to those in need.

Para Pereo, la inspiración es una parte fundamental de su trabajo y su objetivo es lograr una armonía visual en el cuerpo: “Esto es como escribir una canción, donde cada elemento tiene su lugar para contribuir a resaltar la composición general de la obra. Yo me inspiro en los animales y los elementos esenciales de vida —agua, fuego, tierra y aire— para poder realizar cada uno de mis tatuajes. El arte no tiene límites”.

Con el paso del tiempo y observando el potencial del tatuaje en Puerto Vallarta, este estudio organizó el evento Expo Tattoo en 2015, cuyo objetivo era celebrar y promover este tipo de arte en la región. Aquella primera edición se llevó a cabo en el Salón Real del Oro en El Pitillal y, además de involucrar a los demás artistas tatuadores de la escena local, todo lo recaudado tanto en donaciones como en víveres fueron destinados a una casa hogar.
