Tattoo as a Constantly Evolving Art El Tatuaje como Arte en Constante Evolución

IN 2003, amid a society that still did not understand or accept tattoos as art, Javier “Chapa” Ramos decided to open his own tattoo studio: Chapa Tattoo. With great determination he began a successful career in the world of this body art expression here in Puerto Vallarta.

During his years in the business, Ramos has seen the improvement that tattoos have experienced in the region. “The variety of styles and designs has grown considerably. Now, people are more actively looking for a tattoo artist who will meet their personal tastes and preferences.”

This prominent tattoo artist from Puerto Vallarta is especially drawn to the realism, shadows, and the use of color in his designs. “Although there is work that I do in some other styles, anything realistic with shading and use of color is what I love the most.”

EN EL AÑO 2003, en medio de una sociedad que aún no comprendía ni aceptaba el tatuaje como arte, Javier “Chapa” Ramos decidió abrir su propio estudio de tatuajes: Chapa Tattoo. Con mucha determinación inició una exitosa trayectoria en el mundo de esta expresión corporal aquí en Puerto Vallarta.

Durante sus años en el negocio, Ramos ha sido testigo de la mejora que la escena del tatuaje ha experimentado en la región: “La variedad de estilos y diseños ha crecido considerablemente. Ahora, la gente busca de manera más activa un tatuador que se ajuste a sus gustos y preferencias”.

Este destacado artista tatuador de Puerto Vallarta se siente especialmente atraído por el realismo, las sombras y el uso de color en sus diseños: “Aunque hay trabajos que realizo en algunos otros estilos, todo lo que sea realismo sombreado a color es lo que más me gusta hacer”.

Evolution in Tattooing Methods

“Back in the early 2000s, tattoos were done on the parts of the body that clothing would normally cover. This phenomenon occurred with the intent to meet the appearance standards that restaurants and hotels had back then, especially in the positions that had direct contact with customers. Now it is different and not as surprising when young people tattoo their faces first before other parts of their body. This shows their desire to keep their expression highly visible.”

Finally, regarding the training of new tattoo artists, “Chapa” is not considered a school, but acknowledges that it has left its mark on the community. “Many artists have passed through my studio and have developed their own style and technique. Undoubtedly, the quality of their work contributes to the strengthening of the local scene.”

Evolución en la Manera de Tatuarse

“Por allá de principios del 2000, el tatuaje se hacía en las partes internas del cuerpo y/o donde la ropa lo pudiera cubrir de manera normal. Este fenómeno se daba por la intención de cumplir con los estándares de apariencia que restaurantes y hoteles tenían en aquel entonces, sobre todo en las posiciones que tenían contacto directo con los clientes. Ahora es distinto y los jóvenes se tatúan primero el rostro antes que otras partes de su cuerpo. Esto demuestra el deseo que tienen de mantener su expresión muy visible”.

Finalmente, con respecto a la formación de nuevos tatuadores, “Chapa” no se considera una escuela en sí mismo, pero reconoce que ha dejado su huella en la comunidad: “Muchos artistas han pasado por mi estudio y han desarrollado su propio estilo y técnica. Indudablemente, la calidad de sus trabajos contribuye a fortalecer la escena local”.

“I have witnessed a huge evolution in this art through the years. Initially, people got tattoos out of rebellion. Later, people began to choose tattoos for a more personal reason, wanting to express meaning on their skin. Now, if people see something and they like it, they don’t hesitate to go to a studio and get the tattoo they want.”

“He sido testigo de una gran evolución en este arte. Inicialmente, las personas se los realizaban por rebeldía. Después, se los hacían por un significado personal y trataban de expresarlo de esa manera. Ahora, si ven algo y les gusta, no dudan en ir a un estudio y tatuárselo”.
