WITH 28 YEARS of experience in Puerto Vallarta, Sixty Nine Tattoo Studio is headed by Elizabeth Masky since 2007, who is currently focused on piercings, but is one of the longest tattoo artists in the bay. Her style is geared towards the fine lines and delicacy of designs. Through the years, she has acquired knowledge about all aspects involved in tattooing and she has also studied asepsis, antisepsis, anatomy and first aid to offer a comprehensive process.

Following in her footsteps is her son, Bruno Orea, who is also a tattoo artist in the studio and is known for his style based on shadow realism with a talent to ensure the durability of the tattoo over the long term. In addition, he has mastered two additional styles: the traditional and the neotraditional, which fuse elements of realism and classic styling.

CON 28 AÑOS de trayectoria en Puerto Vallarta, Sixty Nine Tattoo Studio es encabezado desde 2007 por Elizabeth Masky, quien actualmente está enfocada en las perforaciones, pero es una de las artistas tatuadoras de más larga trayectoria en la bahía. Su estilo está orientado hacia las líneas finas y delicadeza de los diseños. A través de los años, ha adquirido conocimientos sobre todos los aspectos que se involucran en el tatuaje y también ha estudiado asepsia, antisepsia, anatomía y primeros auxilios para ofrecer un proceso integral.

Por otro lado, su hijo Bruno Orea, quien también es artista tatuador en este estudio, es conocido por su estilo basado en el realismo a sombras, pero con ciertas cuestiones creativas para garantizar la durabilidad del tatuaje a largo plazo. Además, domina dos estilos adicionales: el tradicional y el neotradicional, los cuales fusionan elementos de realismo y tradición.

Myth vs Reality

“In Mexico, where tattoo culture is more than 70 years old, there are still stereotypes entrenched in the society, such as the belief that tattoo artists are criminals or that the process is extremely painful and unprofessional. However, many professional tattoo artists are highly trained and committed to their trade.” —Bruno Orea.

The evolution of tattooing in our region is also clear for Masky, especially with the younger generations: “I have witnessed how young artists have made amazing progress in just a few short years. However, I have also noticed that the ease of access to equipment and the current popularity of the tattoo artists’ needs and expectations have changed. Although some can quickly master the trade, quality and research continue to be fundamental to provide a complete experience,” she concludes.

Mito vs Realidad

“En México, donde la cultura del tatuaje tiene más de 70 años, aún existen estereotipos arraigados, como la creencia de que los tatuadores son delincuentes o que el proceso es doloroso y poco profesional. Sin embargo, muchos profesionales de este arte están altamente capacitados y comprometidos con su oficio.” —Bruno Orea.

Por otro lado, la evolución del tatuaje en nuestro destino también es evidente para Masky, especialmente en las nuevas generaciones: “He sido testigo de cómo jóvenes artistas han logrado un progreso sorprendente en tan solo unos pocos años. Sin embargo, también he observado que la facilidad de acceso a equipos y la popularidad actual del tatuaje han cambiado las necesidades y expectativas de los artistas. Aunque algunos puedan dominar rápidamente el oficio, la calidad e investigación siguen siendo fundamentales para brindar una experiencia completa”, finaliza.
