Step into Spring

Browary Warszawskie welcomes Spring with a vibrant staircase transformation

As the warmth of spring permeates Warsaw, the iconic stairs of Browary Warszawskie undergo a captivating transformation.

Renowned artist Ania Rudak has lent her creative touch, turning the 17-meter-high staircase into a unique canvas. Rudak's intricate designs, known for their fusion of feminine, floral, and animal motifs, beautifully capture the essence of Browary Warszawskie's vibrant life.

5questions for ANNA RUDAK

Many Varsovians might recognize your work on the new stairs at Browary Warszawie. Have you been in the public eye before?

Yes. I have created many visual projects for about ten years as a freelancer now. From time to time, my projects appear in the urban space of Warsaw - murals (e.g. for Converse, Perspektywy Women in Tech), window display projects for the Galilu store.

Can you explain a little about your inspirations?

My main inspiration for creating illustrations is everyday life. I like to look for associations and build atmosphere through the selection of colors and textures. Nature, the female silhouette, and the decorative aspect of design and fashion are probably my favorite themes that I intertwine with each other.

Can you tell us about your process of creating?

In each of my works, there is an element of hand-drawn illustration, and I create textures myself. Even though my illustration is ultimately digital, it consists of many analog elements - ink, paint, pencils. I hope that in the age of AI, our human art will still have an audience, and our imagination and the style and experience built up over the years will always stand the test with class.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I come from Gdańsk, where I completed my studies at the Graphics Department, and I also live here. For several years, I worked in the graphic design profession, and thanks to that, I understood that I must become a freelancer. Since then, I have

been slowly searching for my path, taking on commissions from various industries. The diversity of work that comes to me allows me to develop my skills and encourages me to continually find myself in the creative process - this is the greatest joy for me, to truly combine passion and work and additionally be appreciated for it.

Do you find Warsaw as a city inspiring visually, if so, can you explain a little?

I often visit Warsaw, and I highly value the energy of a big city that has a lot to offer - visually, artistically, and culinarily! :) Warsaw can inspire with its boldness when it comes to creative initiatives, which in the face of such a large city must truly know how to attract the audience. Life by the sea flows with a significantly different, calmer rhythm.

Onwards and Upwards!

In February, Warsaw Chopin Airport celebrated remarkable achievements, hosting over 1.4 million passengers, marking its best February ever. This figure represents an impressive 12% increase compared to February 2020. Additionally, the airport clinched the top spot in the global punctuality ranking, with a staggering 95.9% on-time departure rate. Łukasz Chaberski, acting President of Polish Airports, attributed this success to efficient management amidst growing demand. Despite a 14% decrease in flight operations compared to 2020, passenger numbers have risen by 7%. Notably, cargo tonnage also surged by 2%. The airport's most popular destinations include London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dubai, and Frankfurt.

Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

Flowers for Edelman

In April, Warsaw's landscape transforms as daffodils, symbolizing resilience and remembrance, bloom amidst the poignant echoes of the city's history buried beneath

In the heart of Warsaw, on the 19th of April each year, thousands of paper daffodils bloom on the streets. These delicate flowers, adorning the lapels and bags of passers-by, hold a profound significance deeply rooted in history. To understand the background of this beautiful initiative, we delve into the poignant narrative of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the legacy of Marek Edelman.

In 1943, amidst the darkness of Nazi occupation, the Warsaw Ghetto became the stage for an

extraordinary act of resistance. Facing imminent deportation to death camps, a small group of insurgents, led by courageous figures like Marek Edelman, rose up in defiance. Armed with little but their resolve for dignity, they fought valiantly for nearly a month, defying the odds in the face of overwhelming Nazi forces. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising stands as a testament to human resilience, marking the first urban rebellion in Nazi-occupied Europe.

Fast forward to modern times, the memory of

this uprising is kept alive through the annual Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Campaign. Spearheaded by the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, this initiative aims to spread awareness and commemorate the heroes of the past. The symbolic paper daffodil, designed by the talented Helena Czernek, plays a central role in this endeavor.

Inspired by Marek Edelman's tradition of laying yellow flowers during commemorative ceremonies, the daffodil emerged as a fitting symbol of remembrance. Its vibrant yellow petals symbolize hope and resilience, embodying the spirit of those who fought bravely in the face of oppression. Each year, these paper daffodils serve as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

But the significance of these flowers extends beyond mere symbolism. Through a comprehensive socio-educational campaign, the initiative aims to engage the community and foster a deeper understanding of history. Volunteers take to the streets, distributing daffodils and educational materials, sparking conversations and fostering connections across generations.

The impact of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Campaign is palpable, with each passing year bringing greater awareness and participation. As the city streets fill with people adorned with paper daffodils, almost resembling the inhabitants of the Ghetto wearing a star of David, a profound sense of solidarity and remembrance permeates the atmosphere. It's a moving sight, reminiscent of the resilience and unity that defined the spirit of the uprising.

Checklist for visiting the Warsaw Ghetto

From the more notable to the lesser known, here is a top five list for visiting the Warsaw Ghetto this month

THE MONUMENT TO THE HEROES OF THE GHETTO UPRISING

Unveiled on April 19th, 1948, the fifth anniversary of the insurgency, this flagship landmark was erected in close proximity to where the first shots of the rising were fired. Eleven meters tall, the monument was designed by Nathan Rappaport and famously constructed using Swedish labradorite that had originally been earmarked by the architect Albert Speer to form a Nazi victory arch. A relief depicts a defiant Mordechai Anielewicz standing amid men, women and children caught up in the fighting. Today it is the center point of all ceremonies connected to the battle, not to mention numerous other Jewish related events and holidays.

warsawinsider.pl 11

Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

THE FIRST MONUMENT TO THE GHETTO UPRISING

The original Uprising memorial made its debut on April 16th, 1946. It’s inscription reads: “To those who fell in the unprecedented and heroic struggle for dignity and freedom for the Jewish people, for a free Poland and for the liberation of mankind.” The circular memorial (close to the corner of Polin) symbolizes a manhole coger and incorporates red sandstone, a material purposefully chosen to symbolize the blood that was spilled.

UMSCHLAGPLATZ MEMORIAL

Built to mimic the form of one of the cattle wagons used to take Jews to their deaths, the memorial at Umschlagplatz marks the assembly point for Jews prior to their deportation to Treblinka. Initially plans were raised to inscribe the names of all those known to have been transported to the death camp on the monument, though with that thought to be in excess of 300,000 people the idea was deemed too unrealistic. Instead, the decision was reached to etch approximately 400 Jewish first names onto the granite walls.

MIŁA 18

Mordechai Anielewicz, the commander of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, conducted operations from a bunker on Miła 18. All that remains now is a grassy mound and memorial stone lying halfway up ul. Dubois. It’s said that over 100 Jewish fighters lie buried underneath, including Anielewicz who committed suicide on May 8th as the Nazi piped poisonous gas into the bunker. “What’s most important,” wrote Anielewicz in his final letter, “is that the dream of my life has become a reality. I have lived to see Jewish defence in the Ghetto in all its greatest splendor.”

THE KNIEFALL PLAQUE

On December 7th, 1970, the German Chancellor Willy Brandt visited the Monument to the Ghetto where he spontaneously sank to his knees. Images of this moment flashed across the world and his impromptu act is remembered as sowing the seeds for German-Jewish reconciliation. A tablet in the North Western corner of the Ghetto park has been added and the area rechristened Skwer Willego Brandta.

A Powerful Reminder

The final resting place of more than 200,000 people, this cemetery stands as one of the most expansive in Europe.

In Warsaw's Okopowa Street Jewish cemetery, a poignant monument commemorates a vast World War II mass burial site: two pits containing the remains of an estimated 92,000 Jews killed in the Warsaw Ghetto. Unveiled on Holocaust Memorial Day 2022, the new memorial is a somber tribute to the lives lost during this tragic era. Designed by architects Karol Dzik, Maciej Szpalerski, and Krzysztof Matuszewski, the complex replaces an earlier memorial from the 1980s. It features broken stones representing the victims, spread across the exact area of the burial pits. The memorial is enclosed by low steel walls, creating a space that evokes the horrific events of the past.

The Jewish Cemetery on Okopowa 49/51, established in 1806, remains a poignant testament to Warsaw's Jewish heritage. Despite the city's changing landscape, this cemetery stands as a profound remnant of history. Notable figures like Ludwik Zamenhof, the visionary behind Esperanto, and Marek Edelman, a pivotal leader in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, find their eternal rest here. Recent efforts, including a 'glass brick wall' commemorating Ghetto documentation and a government-funded mass grave memorial, underscore the significance of this sacred ground. Yet, its true splendor transcends tangible monuments, encapsulating the enduring spirit of a community persevering through tumultuous times.

EYE IN THE SKY

The Insider chats with the eye in the sky photographer Cezary Warś

16 Warsaw Insider | April 2024

Warsaw Insider: 1. You have a great eye for composition. What speaks to me about your photos are the directly overhead shots of the city. They are very graphic and sensitive to key spots of the city. Can you tell me more about this process and how you go about finding the places that look so engaging?

Cezary Warś: The process of creating drone photos begins with the fascination with the structure of the city, which is revealed during the flight. When choosing a location, I am often guided by intuition, but also by experience. I also use satellite photos and oblique aerial photos, which allow me to discover unusual shapes that are invisible from the ground. I must also admit that many of my photos were taken quite accidentally, during exploratory flights, and it is those photos taken in the least expected place and moment that I remember the most.

warsawinsider.pl 17

What have you learned about Warsaw since you started photographing it?

By photographing Warsaw, I learned to appreciate its dynamic character and diversity of architecture. Each district has its own history and unique atmosphere, which makes the city never boring. Warsaw is changing so dynamically that a photo taken today in the same place in a few months will have a completely different character.

How much planning goes into your photos?

Before I go out into the city with the drone, I check the weather conditions, lighting and plan my route to maximize the time spent shooting. Legal as-

pects play a very important role in planning drone photos. Before the flight, I must also carefully check whether the object I want to photograph is not in a prohibited zone where you cannot fly a drone. There are also places that require consent from the managers of a given zone, so you must remember to meet the deadlines for submitting the appropriate documents.

Are there special places in the city you love to photograph?

I try to look for new places all the time, but my favorites are definitely the area around Rondo Daszyńskiego, which has changed beyond recognition in a few years. This is where most of the sky-

scrapers are located, which create the character of this place. I also like to explore lesser-known places that may surprise you with their uniqueness.

What are some things you have learned about making a good photograph and yourself as a photographer?

I learned patience and that sometimes you have to wait for the perfect light or conditions to capture a unique shot. I realize that technology and equipment are important tools, but it is the photographer who decides what will be captured in the photo. Each photo I take is a lesson that allows me to develop my artistic vision and technical precision.

I also love the closeness you capture to the things far away from the person looking up from the street. What makes you select the things you zoom in on?

I try to choose objects that can surprise the recipient. Something that seems well known can be shown in a completely surprising way from a drone's perspective. A good example is the Column of Sigismund III Vasa on Castle Square in Warsaw, which we all see from below. By photographing the sculpture from a drone, I managed to bring out details that surprised my viewers (e.g. the beautiful decoration of the royal cloak, but also the details of the hands).

A SMALL SLICE OF HEAVEN

Breakfast all day, cakes and perfect cocktails, Milk Bar, is the place to feel happy...

warsawinsider.pl 21

If you've been to Elektrownia Powiśle lately and noticed the massive line outside, you might have wondered why people are waiting so patiently to get into a Milk Bar. But, it's not your typical milk bar experience. Once you've finally made it inside and you notice the phrase written on the floor, almost like a finish line, "ŚWIĘTO KIEDY CHCESZ!" (holiday when you want it), you'll understand the excitement. There's hardly a livelier scene on a Saturday afternoon in Warsaw's culinary landscape.

WHAT'S TO EAT

Food-wise, while it's not groundbreaking to find breakfast items available all day, the offerings here are exceptionally enticing. A dish like Hash brown with Pastrami speaks for itself, but when your eyes wander across the menu to BBQ chicken waffles, and then to the intriguing option of porridge with shrimps, you'll find yourself saying, "Why not? Today feels like a holiday." On the sweeter side, staples like French toast, bread pudding, and blueberry pierogi are available. However, since the restaurant is Ukrainian-owned, starting with Syrniki—a fluffy pancake resembling marshmallows—topped with Tres Leches is a great choice. It's so sweet and delicious that it might make you feel like it's your birthday, which incidentally, would be the perfect occasion to celebrate here because the cakes are as delectable as they look. Don't miss out on trying the Kyiv cake and Victoria's Secret to satisfy your cravings for all things pink and made of red velvet.

COCKTAILS

As for cocktails, having breakfast and cocktails together might seem a bit strange at first, but it's an experience worth having. We sampled a few to mark a special occasion, but the standout favorites were the Lasting Bliss – a concoction of bourbon, brandy, cherry liqueur, and chocolate bitters, which feels like candy for adults, especially with its chocolate spoon garnish topped with a maraschino cherry. The other standout cocktail, Clover Club, is made with gin, Martini Fiero, raspberry puree, lemon juice, and egg white, which when paired with the red velvet cake looks like a scene straight from the Barbie movie.

INTERIORS

Upon entering Milk Bar, there's a lot to take in. From the enticing display of cakes to the bar serving up top-notch cocktails, to a side room where bakers are hard at work, and a VIP room for celebrating special occasions in privacy—the ambiance is sophisticated yet inviting. The design touches, courtesy of the multi-award-winning architectural and design studio YODEZEEN, add to the ambiance. A particularly nice touch is the use of olive trees, which, when combined with the distressed-looking map of Ukraine on the wall, seem to symbolize hope for peace.

INSIDER TAKEAWAY

In conclusion, we wholeheartedly recommend Milk Bar for a gathering with friends. The staff are exceptionally friendly, and their interactions resemble that of a loving family. Just remember, they don't take reservations, so aim to arrive before the weekend crowds to secure your spot.

BABCIA'S FEAST

A warm embrace of Polish tradition with modern flair

Walking into Oma is like stepping into babcia's house for a holiday. The atmosphere is usually filled with people who feel like relatives, all gathered to partake in the celebration of good food. The space is cozy, reminiscent of a warm spring day, with wafts of enticing smells emanating from a bustling kitchen. Having visited a few times, I'm always greeted with a smile—a rarity in restaurants in Warsaw these days—and almost always asked if I have a reservation, given the place's popularity as a go-to destination for comforting, home-cooked meals.

VIBE

Nestled on a small, tree-lined street that feels like a hidden gem amidst Powiśle's trendy scene, Oma is the perfect embodiment of a quaint and charming restaurant. Inside, tasteful vintage Polish design elements adorn the tables and chairs, complemented by fresh flowers and modern branding on the servers' shirts, featuring caricatures of Oma, the chef's real grandmother. This thoughtful blend of modern aesthetics and vintage charm is also reflected in the food.

MENU

The menu features a daily selection that typically starts with a staple of Polish cuisine: soup. This is followed by a choice of two mains (danie), available as a set or individually. On my latest visit, I indulged in two of my favorite traditional Polish dishes—staples at any

milk bar and beloved specialties of any babcia: schabowy and zupa pomidorowa. The twist on these classics intrigued me; the schabowy was adorned with a heaping pile of grated Parmesan, while the zupa pomidorowa boasted a generous amount of garlic. After tasting these modified versions, I found it hard to imagine going back to my own babcia's preparations. Additionally, the menu offers an array of enticing desserts. One standout is the knedelki—a round dumpling made of cottage cheese, apples, and orange peel—served

with pear stewed in spicy syrup and crunchy breadcrumbs. Each bite is a delight, almost too good to share. While alcoholic beverages are not available, be sure to try their Kompot—a popular Polish drink—crafted in a way that's sure to win you over.

TAKEAWAY

Did I mention you should make a reservation? Well, you should. Attempting to walk in for a spot at babcia's table might leave you heartbroken, longing for nothing but the comfort of your own babcia's kitchen.

When you consider these regions, it is important to remember to focus on the southern part of the country because the vegetation period is the longest there. The warmest region of them all is the general southern part of the country, with its rolling hills and almost microclimate, but it is also important to remember the western and northwestern parts of the country like Lubuskie and Zachodniopomorskie, with the iconic producer Turnau now being the biggest producer with 34 hectares, having a huge area of production. Actually, now the 2nd new upcoming producer, Dwór Charbielin, within 27 hectares.

Why are the better tasting wines from Poland mostly white?

Well, it has to do mostly with the fact that red wines need to come from a more mature vine, and the ones here in Poland are not there yet. We are looking for a sort of perfect gateway for the red wine to improve. We have beautiful wines from the Pinot Noir or Zweigelt grapes, which is a popular variety in Central Europe, but we are seeing stylish Polish Rondo and Regent grapes which almost have a veggie earthy taste that is very familiar among all the sommeliers in Poland when we do blind taste testing. Often we know this varietal because we can taste something of fermented beetroot. It is kind of a thing that is okay, but we always look for something a little bit more advanced in their style, which is the point of reference for the quality. Personally, I see big potential in Cabernet Cortis grape.

Tell us about making a tasting menu with a Michelin star chef?

The idea of Andrea is to smash your palate with an explosion of flavor. Rich and complex experience. So every wine has to have an amplified position. For example, for our borscht soup with caviar and duck broth, it is a challenge to match the main ingredient and the beetroot which is generally not a friend to sommeliers because it is sweet and veggie. Something light red wine, but remember the duck stock with a sort fatness which needs a higher level of alcohol, as well as silky tannins to match. Something not too oaky because it will kill the structure of the dish. And especially Andrea, he brings a lot to our conversation when we discuss pairing wines with his dishes. He is expressive and the wines need to be iconic as well by the label or

the backstory or unusual fragrances.

You were a judge at Wino.pl in Poznan, can you tell us more about it?

The city of Poznan is known for its international fairs and the organizers saw the popularity of Polish wine, so they created the opportunity to invite together a large class of sommeliers, sellers, bloggers from all around Poland to see the different points of view come together to paint a picture of Polish wine culture. It is a really fascinating event where we are tasting different subgroups, red wines, sweet wines, rose wine, and white made from hybrids. Tasting is blind with black foil so that there are no biases.

Is there a best in show?

We judge the wines based on the Robert Parker rating system which gives wines a score between 50 and 100 points. The higher the score, the better the wine. Wines with ratings between 80 and 100 points are considered to be good quality wines worth trying, although, for questions of prestige, wineries tend to only publicize ratings of 90 points and over. One thing to consider is that the ratings change because the vintages change in quality and winemakers are experimenting, but often times for the better.

Who would you keep an eye out for?

If you look in the Lubelskie, you will see Kamil Barczentewicz, a young producer from the new wave, with a precise character and good expression. Two guys: Guillaume Dubois, Jean Thierry Smolis who came from France who are producing the best sparkling wine in Poland.

How do you account for trends?

There are producers making individual series or lines of production like orange wine, petit naturals which are still working and producing carbon dioxide inside and with nice labels. These are perfect for the upcoming consumer or even the business person who wants something more edgy and different.

Would you say there is a wine revolution like there was a craft beer revolution?

People going to wine bars or shops buy wine based on a recommendation and the seller needs to be knowledgeable as well as making a profit and with wine bars in big cities like Warsaw, until the knowledge of the beginning stages of wine is evolved and more informed then it will take some time before it becomes a big thing.

ALE SCANDAL!

Recently opened Madonna causes quite the ongoing controversay...

Amidst the controversy surrounding the opening of a new Italian restaurant named Madonna in Warsaw's plac Konstytucji, echoes of dissent and disapproval reverberate through the streets. Inside Madonna, paintings adorn the walls featuring unconventional depictions of religious figures—Virgin Mary bearing the likeness of Rihanna, and Jesus portrayed as Keanu Reeves or Leonardo DiCaprio. A neon-lit vestibule proudly boasts the quote, "Heaven is on the 1st floor - Madonna," adding a provocative twist to the ambiance. Rosaries drape over alcohol bottles, and a confessional doubles as a photo op—a daring design choice that ignites passions and divides opinions.

The restaurant's opening draws both admirers and detractors, with some lauding its audacious concept while others decry it as offensive and sacrilegious. Protest prayers and petitions calling for a boycott emerge in response, underscoring the deeply ingrained sensitivities surrounding religious symbolism in public spaces.

The saying that any press is good press has helped get Madonna in the public eye. We plan to revisit soon to just see how heavenly their pizza, pasta and cocktails really are.

YOURSELF

An old friend from Hala Gwardii has opened up on Emilii Plater

If you remember being mesmerized at Hala Gwardii by the smells of the espresso machine in action, with its steam hissing, and the anticipation of that perfect shot being pulled when you were food shopping on an early weekend morning—then to feeling like something truly epic was lost when it closed last year—you'll be happy to know that the Espresso Bar has set up a new brick and mortar location on the rapidly developing city center street, Emili Platter.

windows, illuminating the space and highlighting the natural materials that abound—like smooth, blond wood accents and terracotta bricks around the bar. Every detail is meticulously considered, from the minimalist pendant lighting fixtures suspended overhead to the repurposed hairstyling equipment from the previous owner's beauty salon that was there for over 30 years. Check out what hangs suspended in the bathroom!

COFFEE

Serving up Warsaw's own champion roasters Coffeelab and Trigger Roastery, the owners bring their inspiration of drinking dark and rich black coffee from their time in Norway, as well as the high-end brand Tim Wendelboe. A staple choice is a double espresso, but we suggest an aeropress or tonic espresso to get your caffeine fix checked off for the day.

FOOD

Selectively sourced desserts by Domobake and Muus in Warsaw's hip district of Powiśle are perfect sweet accompaniments to the savory blends of coffee on offer.

INSIDER TAKEAWAY

Be sure to try their Norwegian brunost toast prepared fresh for you with toasted chałka and caramelized cheese curls on top. While you can perch outside on their window ledges, their outside garden is scheduled to open in April. It is sure to be the top spot to sit and people-watch on the city's soon-to-be most popular streets.

COMMUNITY HUBS & FOOD HALLS

For a catch-all solution offering a variety of food, drinks and social experiences under one address, check out the following Warsaw legends…

F&B

CENTRUM PRASKIE KONESER

Pl. Konesera, koneser.eu

Warsaw’s largest food hall (23 food points and five bars!) has been intelligently designed so as to retain intimacy while never ceasing to remind visitors as to its diverse range of choices – the so-called ‘Asian district’ scores particularly highly. In standalone terms, top marks go to the elegant Piano Bar, the eclectic Uwaga craft beer haven, the swanky MOXO bar-club crossover, the Tex Mex of Blue Cactus and the newly-launched Middle Eastern emporium that is Amar Beirut. Finally, check into the Bio Bazar, a farmers’ market with a reputation that extends nationwide.

OVERVIEW

ELEKTROWNIA POWIŚLE

ul. Dobra 42, elektrowniapowisle.com

OVERVIEW

Reopened in 2018 as a mixed-use project containing cultural sites, F&B outlets, A Class offices and loft-style apartments, no other investment has had a bigger impact on Praga’s overdue regeneration than Koneser. Culturally, it’s also done much thanks to the Polish Vodka Museum, the Museum of Fantastic Art and temporary exhibitions such as Banksy in 2021. For most though, the F&B lineup is the strongest attraction of all and this includes upmarket Indian from Bombaj Malasa, the casual eatery Spółdzielnia and the real feather in the cap, the Koneser Grill – a meat-centric venue of high sophistication.

JOIN THE CLUB

Debuting in February, frequent visitors can now register to join the Norblin Factory Club, an app that will give members access to exclusive offers, promotions and discounts. Free to download, it’s been designed with guests, tenants and suppliers in mind.

Initially completed in 1904 to serve as Warsaw’s primary source of electricity, Elektrownia’s blended approach includes an exclusive top floor beauty hall filled with cutting edge beauty solutions and a retail offer than tends to shirk the mainstream to instead slant in on contemporary Polish design, upscale vintage, niche brands and established local talent. The food and drink has also been a major plus, with most attention going to a food hall that appears in an energetic sea of neon.

WARS SAWA JUNIOR

Marszałkowska 104/122, warssawajunior.pl

OVERVIEW

Standing all but in the shadow of the Palace of Culture, WARS SAWA JUNIOR cuts a familiar sight to all. Conveniently connected by tram, bus, metro and even bicycle and scooter, today it presents the slick and shining face of modern Warsaw. But then, WARS SAWA JUNIOR has always been at the forefront of Warsaw retail. Opened as one of the first shopping centres in Poland, to this day it enjoys unflagging popularity thanks to the largest adidas store in the country as well as the only Uniqlo. Other brands and stores present include Mango, Rituals, Zara, TK Maxx and H&M.

BROWARY WARSZAWSKIE

Grzybowska 58, browarywarszawskie.com.pl

OVERVIEW

Utilising elements of a historic brewery and setting them against an upmarket backdrop of freshly mapped streets and immaculate new build that feels contextually suited to the district, Features include a premium food hall, Robert Lewandowski’s Nine’s sports bar, the ever-popular Balkan eatery Munja, and Baila – a stunning live entertainment emporium. But our favourite enclave of all? The flagship brewpub known as Browar Warszawski.

HALA KOSZYKI

ul. Koszykowa 63, koszyki.com

OVERVIEW

Koszykowa 63, koszyki.comConsidered the grande dame of food halls, the brick and wrought iron interiors of this spot look beautiful with the F&B offer split between standalone restaurants such as the fancy Warszawski Sen to vendors like the fist-bumping, burrito boys at Gringo. For craft beer and grilled sausages then Kiełba w Gębie don’t put a foot wrong, whilst the openall-hours ĆMA is a legend in its own lifetime.

FABRYKA NORBLINA Żelazna 51/53

OVERVIEW

Opened on the site of a former metal factory, the scale of Norblin takes a while to sink in. A beautiful combination of new and old, it’s a photogenic example of everything that makes modern Warsaw so captivating. Representing 200-years of history, the two hectare site is riddled with over 50 leftovers from the Industrial Revolution and these are set against attractions such as the luxury Kinogram cinema (champagne vending machines!), the immersive Art Box Experience, the only Apple Museum in the country (as in the tech brand, not the fruit), a factory museum and the Smart Kids Planet – a 1,600 sq/m project with nine zones that aim to promote logical thinking, healthy eating, motor functions, perception and creative thinking.

WINE & DINE

Kontakt

Sandomierska 13

Weaknesses do not exist in Kontakt, and if they do, they have yet to be formally identified by any who visit. Looking glorious in its deep shades of blue, its look is complemented by a 400-strong wine list slanted towards natural, bio-dynamic and organic wines. The five-star experience is aided by wonderful food.

LOCAL WINES

Brać

INSIDER FAVORITE

BRAĆ polskie wina

Zgoda 3

A unique ambiance welcomes at Brać, stocking exclusively Polish wines, pioneering for Warsaw. Perfect for meetups or bringing friends, the night buzzes at their doorstep. Enjoyed: 2022 vintage orange wine from Saint Vincent Vineyard, blending Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, and Muscat grapes.

Zgoda 3 & Sierakowskiego 4A

Resistant as traditionalists may be to the very notion of Polish wine, Brać have made it their mission to showcase its unknown quality. Presenting on-edge sips from niche domestic producers (including collabs with the Funky Fluid craft brewery!), all this is done in a stylish space that feels good to be in. From 2023, this was our favourite wine-related find!

NATURAL WINE

Rascal

Moliera 6

Formerly a canteen for ballet dancers, this address now holds the largest bar in Europe specialising in natural wines – you weren’t expecting that! Entered past a lavish drape, this cool space has a suitably adventurous choice of rebel wines.

BEER GEEKS

Jabeerwocky

Nowogrodzka 12

Good old Jabbers will never let you down. A Warsaw institution, the adventurous choice of beers gives nods to international pioneers, domestic talents as well as

their own house beers. Prewar floors and the welcome smell of spillage give it a great atmosphere that becomes a boisterous babble of international voices the later it gets. For something quieter, take your pint next door to their sister bar, Jabeerwocky Junior.

THE HEART OF POLSKI CRAFT

Kufle i Kapsle

Nowogrodzka 25

Respectful of the building’s pre-war heritage, the brick interiors are thick with noise, clamour and the reassuring smells of last year’s party. On colder nights, make your way to the back to discover an intimate space sprinkled with vintage armchairs and wonky old lamps set at a natural tilt. The beers are among the most radical in Warsaw.

CUTTING EDGE CRAFT

Hopito Chmielna

Chmielna 24

Opened last year as the younger sister of Hopito’s Żurawia venture, this branch feels a little more mature in its target audience, though every bit as fun in its beer selection - radicalized drinkers will love Hopito’s own crazy brews.

OLD TOWN PINTS

Same Krafty & Same Krafty Vis-à-vis

Nowomiejska 10

Jammed between the Barbican gateway and the Rynek, Same Krafty’s pair of Old Town drinkeries face opposite each other to offer their own mini-pub crawl. Appearing as raucous and rugged tavern-like bars, the experimental craft beers are a league ahead of the mainstream fizz peddled by

the other nearby bars.

FRIDAY HIT

Grace Drink Bar

Krucza 16/22

Named in honour of Grace Jones, the choice of hero says much about a place that devotes itself to celebrating the glam excess of 80s New York. Rooms include one that’s all bordello style colours and velvety finishes, and another that’s high on plush purple, glass and mirrors. Fuelling the party, are classic cocktails, kamikaze shots and kitschy yesteryear hits.

CREATIVE COCKTAILS

Ave Pegaz

Piłsudskiego 9

Inside a lively interior that doesn’t take itself too seriously (check the ‘ceiling garden’), swivel about to gawk at a mighty collection of corkscrews and drinking implements. In this alchemist’s workshop find yourself enjoying some of the most creative cocktails in Warsaw.

COCKTAIL PORN VHS

Poznańska 7

The shoebox sized VHS pays tribute to the 80s and 90s and is a model for good times –boasting a flamingo and pictures of Mr T., the toilet says it all. The drinks are among the wackiest in Warsaw, and they’re as fun to drink as they are to photograph.

RETRO HIP

Paloma Inn

Poznańska 21

Inspired by The Jetsons, the moon landings and the atom, Paloma Inn is a groovy blast of lunar lines, pea green colour tones and furnishings and fittings that are retro-fu-

turistic. The experience is compounded by easy listening muzak, 70s menu faves like fondue and mega fun cocktails.

THE ATMOSPHERE

Beirut & Kraken

Poznańska 12

Somewhere, amid all the junk relating to the Lebanese conflict (sandbags, ammo boxes…), you’ll find the spirit of Poznańska contained within this long, skinny bar. As fashionable now as it was when it opened, finish the evening in their connecting venture, the Pirates of the Caribbean-style Kraken. Evenings dissolve into a wild, happy whirl of international voices.

INSIDER CLASSIC

Pardon To Tu

Al. Armii Ludowej 14

Despite the upgrade in surrounds, they’ve retained the leftfield spirit of their old haunt thanks to flexi hours, a commitment to obscure sounds, and a well-spaced interior that references their former venue through its decadent colour scheme and wall of favoured musicians. The air of friendly, unforced cool is unmatched!

FOR THE MUSIC

Młodsza Siostra

Dobra 14/16

Known for his ear for upcoming talent, the owner Michał isn’t averse to taking risks in order to broaden Warsaw’s musical palate. The scrappy backdrop of bike repair garages give a vibe redolent of the shadowy courtyards of Berlin and Budapest, whilst inside it’s all creaking floorboards, mismatched furnishings and a clientele sourced from the local Academy of Fine Arts.

The Buzz

REBEL SOUNDS

Chmury / Hydrozagadka

11 Listopada 22

Set in a fleapit courtyard, it’s hard to tell where one begins and the other ends, but both are spiritually cojoined by a devotion to eclectic live music. Tight and crowded, it’s a place where audience and band become one, feeding off each other to generate an electrifying atmosphere.

A BIT OF EVERYTHING

Foton

Wilcza 9A

You know it’s been an epic weekend when you wake up on Monday knowing that Foton was involved. Conversation with strangers is natural after a few of Foton’s cocktails, and these are enjoyed to a cool backdrop made up of fleet of tumbling plants perched on steel-framed irrigational contraptions.

CULT BAR

Gemba

Chmielna 21

Adopting a loose-fitting PRL style, interiors include wood-paneled walls decorated with pics of Pope JPII, sporting pennants and framed artworks from the heyday of the Polish School of Poster. Tricked out with retro wallpaper, the perches by the bar are the most sought, but spillover seating can also be found in a winter garden enclosed by green and scarlet drapes – very David Lynch. Drinks include a broad-minded selection of craft beers, house cocktails and shots.

PRE-CLUB DRINKS

Bar Pacyfik

Hoża 61

Based upon the kind of Tijuana dive bar you’d have

happened upon during the Miami Vice era, Pacyfik is all candy floss pink and shades of teal: a raw-looking den that looks purposefully imperfect. Keeping the hip international crowd on the wrong side of drunk are kick-ass cocktails!

LATE NIGHTER

Republica San Escobar

Poznańska 7

Lacking airs and graces, it’s a place where fun rules the roost. Tiny in size, find an interior filled with corrugated iron sheets, zappy neons, chunky woods and bike pedals on the footrests. The fun-loving spirits is irresistible, and the tight dimensions mean the party often spills onto the terrace outside.

ESSENTIAL CHECK-IN

Fabryka Norblina

Żelazna 51/53

Without fail, the big winner of 2023 was Norblin – hell, we even saw Kieran Culkin walking through over summer! In terms of nightlife, winners include the elite MOXO and the craft-minded Uwaga. Packed in the evening, the atmosphere is squared out perfectly by the live music that frequently escapes from the Piano Bar. The Insider fave though remains Piano Bar, a place with fancy cocktails, a 12-foot chandelier and a crowd that errs from late 20s upwards.

STUDENT CARNAGE

Nowy Świat ‘Pavilions’

Nowy Świat 26

For the highest condensation of bars in the capital head to ‘the pavilions’, a collection of ramshackle drinking cabins, shot bars and sheesha lairs inside a tight grid of shadowy back alleys. Adding to the

gentle sense of confusion comes the realisation that so many bars look the same – accessed through clattery, barred doors, visitors walk into murk and chaos.

LIVE SPORTS

Shamrock Sports Bar

Krucza 51

At long last, Warsaw has the sports bar it deserves. Zapping in football, rugby and suchlike from around the world (but mainly Britain), this Irish-run spot is an offshoot of the atmospheric Shamrock Irish Pub on Zgoda. Though a lot smarter than its sister, the raucous sense of fun has carried over – as has the quality Guinness.

ALT. ENTERTAINMENT Worek

Kości

Bagatela 10

There is nothing ordinary about Worek Kości and that’s underlined by its collection of 400 replica skulls. Known for its burlesque nights, this passionate celebration of the beautiful and bizarre also has a busy roster of lectures dedicated to criminal profiling, forensics and serial killers. Oh, and the cocktails are good.

THE PRAGA VIBE

W Oparach W Absurdu

Ząbkowska 6

Craft beers lurk within the fridge, but for the seminal Absurdu experience order a tray of vodka before bulldozing through the crowds that gather to listen to Balkan rock and Afro-Latin bands. Somewhere, hidden deep beneath the creaking antiques and moth-eaten Persian rugs, you might be lucky to find a wood-carved bar.

40 Warsaw Insider | April 2024

NORTHERN NIGHTS

Havana

Słowackiego 16/18

Set on the first floor of a PRL era tower, the super cool interior offers up a coherent display of retro posters, luscious plants and light wood trimmings that are respectful of this space’s former life as a 1960s cafe. Perched among hip freelancers and theatre types learning their lines, sip away on trendy bio wines, adventurous lemonades, craft swigs or specialty coffee sourced from local roasters.

CLUB OF THE YEAR

K-Bar Powiśle

Leona Kruczkowskiego

Providing an alternative to the usual Smolna / Luzztro / Jasna 1 scene, the location inside one of the pillars that prop up Poniatowskiego Bridge lends an ‘in the know’ frisson of adventure to your evening. Small, sweaty, raw and intimate, the industrial-style vibe is offset against oriental lanterns and the occasional Korean flag. Music-wise, and evenings promise everything from Italo-rave to techno trance.

UPMARKET CLUBBING

Sen

Wioślarska 6

Some would say that Sen enjoys its heyday in the summer when the rooftop terrace opens to afford views of the illuminated bridges that span the river. But even outside these months it’s long enjoyed a reputation as Warsaw’s premier super-lux club. High class cocktails and a stringent door policy have helped maintain their name as the principal destination for glam, catwalk excess.

SHOW TIME!

Chaton

Foksal 19

Chaton is where the celebs and top-earners gather to enjoy world class stage performers prance about whilst revelling in the bosom of refined luxury.

DESTINATION COFFEE

Café Pląs Puławska 113A (Królikarnia)

Set inside the Króliarnia palace, it’s laidback and artsy-cool, something aided by the strategically placed plants, chillout beats and rare-find art books placed reverentially on the shelves. Specialty coffee, bio wines, alternative soft drinks and craft beer make it a highly versatile place to finish in after a brisk autumn walk around the palace grounds.

THE MICHELIN STAR

Nuta

Pl. Trzech Krzyży 10/14

Andrea Camastra’s restaurant is a magical enclave in which time stands still. Mixing his famed scientific techniques with artisanal processes, his tasting menu is expressive in its aesthetics and flavour, as if it were an extension of his own firecracker character. Even the cheeseboard is a mind-bender – on our April visit, jaws hit the floor as this arrived in the liquified form of a pear consommé topped with warm gorgonzola foam. A bold, world-class adventure, no other restaurant offers such a ride – a second Michelin star seems guaranteed.

FORMAL & EXTRAORDINARY

Epoka

Nineteenth century cornices and baroque drapes lend an enveloping sense of luxury to this A-Class space. Epoka’s menu is based on Polish cookbooks from different epochs, with the dishes reconstructed in a way that’s innovative, unexpected and a roller coaster of thrills. La Liste officially rank it among the world’s Top 100 Restaurants.

EXQUISITE

Nolita

Winning our 2022 award last year for ‘Outstanding Achievement’, chef Jacek Grochowina’s enclave of class looks dashing with its monochrome colours and muted gunmetal shades, but it’s the food that has made it the place Warsaw heads to live the life of the 1%. Treasuring detail and finesse, Nolita demonstrates fine dining hasn’t died.

CASUAL SCENE

Bibenda

With no reservations accepted, Bibenda’s enduring popularity ensures that queues often build at the entrance – even at the height of the Polish winter. Augmenting the warm interiors

of raw red brick and dim yellow lighting, guests flock for a menu that celebrates the fields, forests and farmsteads of Poland. Though not strictly vegetarian, meat is a rare find with the focus now shifted on eclectic combinations of freshly plucked goodies –e.g. crispy mushrooms and scallions with fermented garlic chili honey and peanut chili crisps.

In October, that meant pumpkin with goat milk feta and ‘golden raisins’, and a star turn from a beef rib with pickled plums and a pair of steamed buns.

LOCAL BAKERY

Bułka z Chlebem

Walecznych 5

The subject of Warsaw’s best artisanal bakery is contentious, but Saska Kępa’s Bułka z Chlebem takes some beating with its cult miso breads, fluffy loaves of chmurka, pillowy challah and daily pastry specials. It’s an integral part of the community with fermented wheat and rye sourdough their specialty.

STAR SUSHI

Noriko

Mińska 45

With just eight seats and one sitting per day, reservations are mandatory. Priced PLN 750 per head, the cost mirrors what many are calling the most exceptional sushi experience the country has ever seen.

TIME FOR THAI

Ahaan

Unii Lubelskiej 1

Found in a historic tollbooth, Ahaan serve mostly authentic ‘street food’ from northern Thailand – that mean more herbs (ginger and lemongrass) and more earthy flavours than you may expect.

AFRICAN FEAST

Queen Sheba

Jana Pawła II 45A

This cramped, little nook presents itself in a cheerful manner, decorated as it is with chunky woods and Ethiopian flags, fabrics and assorted trinkets – it is the food though that is the principal standout, with occasionally hot and peppery meats served on teff-based injera bread (think of a giant pancake) and then scooped up by hand.

COLOMBIAN COOL

Macondo

Poznańska 16

Moving from Poniatowski Bridge in December, Macondo will be looking to transplant their cheerful, party vibe to Poznańska. Known for their Latin party tipples and bitey menu of crispy empanadas and plantain pancakes, we’ll be checking in on them in the coming weeks!

NEIGHBOURHOOD GREEK

Mr. Greek Souvlaki

Londyńska 16

Festooned with potted shrubs, the outdoor wooden deck is one of Saska’s finest outdoor check-ins. If that’s packed – and it often is – head inside where an atmosphere of gentle chaos reigns in the noisy open kitchen. Eschewing warmth and authenticity, the atmo-

sphere fits we;; with the meaty skewers.

RED HOT INDIAN

Guru

Widok 8

From the openers, the chili chicken fry stands out as a dish that’s all snap and crackle, while of the mains the tikka masala is exceptional in taste. And when you want to take the nuclear option, sign the disclaimer before being flattened by the phaal – it’s Poland’s hottest curry!

UPMARKET INDIAN

Bombaj Masala Wola

Krochmalna 61

Under a ribbed, wavy wooden ceiling, revel in a plush interior while enjoying posh ‘street food’ and or the off-the-menu vindaloo. Cocktails reflect the slick, dynamic interior and are also excellent.

MEXICAN MAGIC

Santa Catrina

Radna 14

Decorated in a jaunty Day of the Dead style, the tacos (and secret spicy salsas!) of Isabel Balderas are legendary. The number of expat Mexicans that eat here are the ultimate testament to her prowess.

VIETNAMESE TASTE

Viet Street Food Bistro

Królowej Aldony 5/2

What started as a mere food truck has evolved into a proper sit-down space. The huge bowls of pho are a wise order to make, though our standard in this busy neighbourhood eatery is the fried beef with pineapple and oyster sauce.

Smartly appointed in dark metallic colours, visit for an exhilarating menu that includes salmon jerky, tuna sausages, an elaborately reconstructed dorada tail and the best-selling chili con tuna. It’s an ecstasy of tastes.

ARGENTIAN GREATNESS

Baires

Wybrzeże Kościuszkowskie 43

Sharing a building with Tuna and near Elektrownia, it’s perfectly located in Sava Boutique Hotel. Leo Messi sets the tone with an informal vibe honoring Argentine greats. Enjoy Pisco Sours and empanadas before savoring rib-eye or Portena pizzas. Run by Lucas Arce, Baires is where passion meets taste.

They say legends never die, and so it’s proved with the return of this institution. Though contemporary in its styling, nods to the past are plentiful and include such elements as the original chairs. It vibes well but it eats even better –the tacos and burritos never disappoint.

SOUTH AMERICAN FLAIR

Ceviche Bar

Twarda 4

With Argentine chef Martin Gimenez Castro injecting his passion and personality into the venue, this is an address that punches through the greyness of everyday Warsaw. Ceviche is naturally the default order, and here it’s served in around five different forms. The happening, cosmopolitan ambience is reflected by sublime cocktails.

THE UNEXPECTED MOD

Oleandrów 8

Devised by Trisno Hamid, a Singaporean chef with a classic French background, glories include Angus beef rump steak served with tahini mashed potatoes and a big thump of chili and fig relish. Adding to the sense of being somewhere current, find an interior featuring a retro mirrored wall, upside down plants and busy tables filled with new media types.

ONE OF A KIND

Trójka Kielichów

Stalowa 38 / 2

Is it a café? A restaurant? Wine bar? Cocktail den? The truth is, it’s all of these yet none. A hybrid hangout at the front end of cool, under indigo tinted lights this scruffy yet theatrically hip room (it’s tiny!) serves killer breakfasts, fab cocktails, low intervention wines and beautiful bites such as Turkish pochette eggs. Radically creative, it’s akin to being invited

HARDCORE CARNIVORE

Mięsny

To some, it’s the best butcher for miles. To others, the greatest informal restaurant that Warsaw’s ever had. The truth is, Mięsny is actually both: where the latter is concerned, their steaks have no peer. For the budget-minded, the daily-changing lunch deal often hits perfect marks.

INSTA FAVE

Happa To Mame

Hoża 43/49

Don’t look for a sign, rather for the queue that wraps its way around the corner. Specialising in matcha teas, the menu also includes dango rice balls and daifuku mochi filled with seasonal delicacies. Split in two rooms, the one that gets the most attention touts illuminated mesh-wired installations that hang like clouds.

BURGERS

Burger.lab

Piękna 28/34

If you thought the burger ‘thing’ had jumped the shark ten years ago, then clearly you haven’t been to Burger.lab. The venue alone is invigorating with things taking a truly wacky turn downstairs – looking like it’s been ambushed by graffiti artists, head here to chow down on non-standard burgers such as the Glam – sprayed gold, it’s packed with unexpected additions like strawberry sauce.

A VEGAN THRILLER

Dziki Królik

Rzeczypospolitej 2A

The four-table intimacy of this timber-encased room charms

immediately, and is accented by a neon pink flamingo, fragranced candles, and a discreet pile of books such as Emily Hanson’s Modern Rustic. Head chef Magdalena Kurowicka’s involves Warsaw’s best tacos and more fine-handed concoctions that are veganized with love – for example, soy meat bourguignon.

CITY CENTRE VEGAN

Peaches Gastro Girls

Mokotowska 58

There’s jillions of vegan competitors sharing the same postcode, but no-one pulls it off like Peaches. Touting a cool, scuffed courtyard and radical orange interiors, the Portobello tacos are a Mexican love letter while the wontons deserve their own gold medal.

VEGAN BRUNCH

Lychees

Bielańska 1

From the creators of Peaches comes this brill brunch spot. Design-wise, the pair’s taste for cool is unmissable and surmised by a wall of glazed ceramic tiles from Holland’s GBD.studio. The experimental dishes include a great congee served with cashew butter glazed in muscovado, salsa macha, salty angel wings, roasted shallot, and a topping of roasted soybean sprinkles.

VEGAN NOODLES

Vegan Ramen Shop

Finlandzka 12 / Jana Pawła II 52/54 / Kazimierzowska 43

We’ve heard some describe Vegan Ramen Shop as serving “the best noodles in the world!” They’re definitely memorable, and the spicy miso ramen will for sure convert those suspicious of this claim. Enjoy them in a trio of casual eateries each touting their own urban style.

TWO FROM ZACHETA

Krzysztof Klimek's realist paintings and Henryk Lula's exquisite ceramics captivate and inspire

EXHIBITIONS

Krzysztof Klimek. Now I prefer views on display until May 26

"Everything at a distance turns into poetry: distant mountains, distant people, distant events; all become Romantic." With these words, the German poet Novalis anticipated the appeal of one of the richest motifs in visual arts: the open window. From the distant vistas admired by the likes of Matisse, Bonnard, and Caillebotte to the introspective musings of Caspar David Friedrich, artists have long drawn inspiration from the scenes framed by their windows.

Krzysztof Klimek's exhibition "Now I Prefer the Views" at Zachęta showcases this motif in a striking and compelling way. With nearly 60 works on display, the collection offers a narrative of Klimek's evolution through realism that began in 2004. From abstract compositions to vividly realistic depictions of everyday views, often through his own window or what seems like a window of a parked car, they are compositionally reminiscent of photographs taken with a long focal length, causing the images to be flattened and scrutinized compositionally.

A few of the paintings have a more conceptual motif, like a series which depicts the passing of time in constructing a building outside the window of the artist's friend. Another is a triptych panoramic, which takes on an entirely different meaning when you look at the title card and realize it is a view from Christ the King Statue,

Świebodzin. This reminds me of the joke about the best view of the Palace of Culture and Science: the view looking out.

The exhibition also presents Krzysztof Klimek's photographs created in the 1980s and 1990s, chronologically preceding the

period of painterly realism. It is these that are truly a wonderful surprise, as they are charming, beautiful, and candid views of Poland at a time when not many street photographers captured it. I hope to see an exhibition of more of photos in the future.

Henryk Lula

Ceramics. The Art Of Matter on display until May 19

"The creative process of ceramics differs from that of painting or sculpture," notes Henryk Lula, emphasizing the role of imagination in shaping its outcome. The other exhibition at Zachęta showcases a wide array of works by Henryk Lula, an artist, teacher, and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Featuring over 100 objects, it offers the most comprehensive presentation to date of Lula's achievements. Active from the 1950s to the present, Lula's creations revolve around ceramics, emphasizing the theme of matter, which aligns with his theoretical reflections on art's role. The exhibition delves into the evolution of modern ceramic tradition in Poland, transcending the boundaries of applied art or design since the 1960s.

Lula's handmade objects, ranging from shells to bottles, platters, and jugs, reflect his mastery of physics, thermal, and chemical processes. These diverse forms, whether flat, round, concave, or convex, serve as the foundation for his exploration of color and texture through glazing and firing techniques. Original glazes, meticulously crafted to complement each form, unite to form cohesive ceramic artworks. Through sets of harmonious or contrasting forms, the exhibition highlights the complexities and nuances of ceramic shaping, governed by workshop expertise and artistic finesse.

Make sure to visit the annex

to the main exhibit space to learn about Lula's remarkable contribution to the reconstruction of a pivotal piece of European cultural heritage: the Great Furnace from the Artus Court in Gdańsk. His meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication are just as awe-inspiring as his exquisite glazes.

INTERVIEW

IT TAKES TWO TO MAKE SHOW GO RIGHT!

The Insider had the privilege of meeting with the dynamic duo responsible for designing some of Warsaw’s most exciting museum exhibitions.

Anna and Kaja of Onto Studio share a remarkable story of how they became partners. Initially, they were strangers before fate brought them together

at the Copernicus Centre workshop for design ideas, where they were selected from a pool of applicants. Their collaboration began with a project utilizing the camera obscure technique on photosensitive t-shirts, aimed

at vacationers. Although the project garnered praise from the Copernicus Centre, plans for its development were shelved. However, the workshop yielded a more significant outcome –their enduring friendship. Their shared passion for design led them to create an interactive freestanding wall at the Bauhaus in Germany, influenced by Oskar Schlemmer's stellar costume designs. Upon returning to Warsaw, they joined forces to craft notable exhibitions at POLIN, the Royal Castle, and the National Museum, marking the inception of their collaborative journey.

Insider: How do you approach the original design for an exhibition?

Our approach to the design process is highly fluid. For instance, our recent project at The Royal Castle in Warsaw, featuring Jerzy Nowosielski's work, drew inspiration from his church interiors. We integrated elements reflecting his emphasis on symmetry and reverence for icons into our design. Furthermore, we were influenced by the color schemes he employed, establishing visual connections between objects across different rooms. A highlight of this exhibition is the "Ciało" (body) room, where we employed organic forms and vegan leather on the walls, evoking the sensation of touching skin.

How do you ensure inclusivity for visitors of varying ages and abilities?

Inclusivity is a paramount consideration in our design philosophy. With the Jerzy Nowosielski exhibit, accessibility and engagement for all visitors,

52 Warsaw Insider | April 2024

including children and those with disabilities, were central. We aim to foster a sense of fun and curiosity in younger visitors, encouraging them to view museums as enjoyable spaces. For older children, we facilitate easier connections with art, such as offering tactile reliefs of renowned paintings, promoting awareness of disabilities among visitors.

How do you balance form versus function?

Functionality is always our primary concern when designing exhibitions. We ensure that each visitor's engagement is sustained throughout the entire exhibit. Currently, we're working on a large-scale installation chronicling Polish history, a challenging endeavor given its dense subject matter. To make it more accessible and engaging, we plan to include visual aids, such as diagrams and timelines, elucidating complex narratives.

How do you stay abreast of trends in exhibitions worldwide?

While we do attend exhibitions globally, our focus lies more on materials, manufacturing techniques, and aesthetic principles, as well as exemplary accessibility practices. We trust our own vision and expertise when designing, drawing inspiration from various sources to create innovative and inclusive experiences.

Did you encounter any hardships starting off?

Anna and Kaja: Our early experiences, particularly with our first exhibition at the National Museum in Warsaw, were challenging. Initially, our concept faced criticism from the museum's former director, prompting us to reevaluate and refine our approach. However, with perseverance and collaboration, we overcame these obstacles, realizing that successful exhibitions require cohesive narratives and meticulous planning.

What are the biggest challenges in creating an exhibition?

Apart from addressing accessibility needs within budgetary constraints, navigating bureaucratic procedures and adhering to strict timelines pose significant challenges. Securing approvals, finalizing contracts, and coordinating various elements demand careful attention and resource management. Despite these hurdles, our commitment to creating immersive and informative experiences remains unwavering.

An Enchanting Evening Night

Don't miss the timeless drama of Stanisław Wyspiański amidst the historical splendor of Warsaw's Royal Łazienki Park after dark.

The Royal Łazienki Museum in Warsaw cordially invites the public to an open-air theater rendition of Stanisław Wyspiański's "November Night" on April 13, 2024. Directed by Leszek Zdun, this immersive performance will unfold amidst the enchanting backdrop of the Royal Baths Park.

"November Night" is a testa-

ment to Wyspiański's brief yet impactful visit to the Royal Baths Park, where the artistic treasures evoking antiquity ignited his creative spark, resulting in this profoundly original work. Set predominantly within the park's lush grounds, the drama reflects upon the historical significance of the Officer Cadet School, a pivotal institution for the young military figures who instigated the 1830 independence uprising depicted by Wyspiański.

Marking the 115th anniversary of the writer's passing, "November Night" will come to life in the historic gardens, seamlessly blending with the autumnal ambiance. The organizers highlight the significance of the Łazienki gardens as the ideal backdrop for fully experiencing the richness of Wyspiański's masterpiece,

where the interplay between ancient and divine realms with the earthly landscape resonates most profoundly.

The staging concept revolves around faithfully recreating the scenes described by the author, allowing the audience to traverse the Royal Baths Park gardens and witness the drama unfold in sequence. The performance will be enhanced by captivating light and sound effects, further immersing spectators in the narrative's evocative atmosphere.

MUSEUMS

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN!

Warsaw’s rich history and cultural significance has left it with no shortage of museums to visit. Offering a well-rounded view of the city’s past and present, these are the seven you just shouldn’t miss…

FRYDERYK CHOPIN MUSEUM

The 18th century Ostrogski Palace is the perfect foil for the ultra-modern content of this multi-sensory space. The personal items are captivating (his death mask, gifts from his muse, etc.), but the big victory here is the museum’s ability to suck visitors right back into the times of Chopin through the use of interactive sights and sounds. ul. Okólnik 1, chopin. museum

MUSEUM OF LIFE UNDER COMMUNISM

A deeply personal insight into the former system by allowing visitors to view what Communism meant to the everyday person. Here, rifle and

rummage through a room mockedup to resemble a typical household apartment, watch propaganda films, peer inside a phone box, paw at vintage keep-fit gear or covet the ladies fashions of the time. Detailed in its captions, witty in its presentation and comprehensive in its content, it is a place where normal items such as aftershave bottles, postcards, clothing and crude household appliances are allowed to shine on a totem and tell their own story. A haven of trinkets and collectibles, its small size belies its utter magic. ul. Piękna 28/34, mzprl.pl

MUSEUM OF WARSAW

Reprised as a maze-like treasure filled trove glimmering with

curiosities, thousands of objects have been gathered here to detail the story of Warsaw in a non-linear style that can at times feel overwhelming. Peculiar souvenirs, scale models, old postcards and recovered works of art all combine with a mass of trivia to leave visitors boggled with knowledge. The vertiginous views of the Rynek below are worth the admission alone. Rynek Starego Miasta 28-42, muzeumwarszawy.pl

NATIONAL MUSEUM

Famed for its collection of Dutch and Flemish masters, it’s also the final word in Polish art, with all the greats represented – inc. Matejko, Witkiewicz and other such stars.

That’s reason enough for many, but for others the museum’s ace card was revealed at the end of 2017 with the opening of the Gallery of Polish Design. Offering a full 360 view of Polish 20th century applied arts, it’s an aesthetic joy featuring everything from iconic PRL era wall units and tulip chairs to kitschy toys and gizmos. Frankly, it’s a stunning museum that just keeps getting better – though delayed by covid, the start of the year saw the world class Gallery of Ancient Art added to the mix. Featuring 1,800 ancient relics, papyrus scrolls, Iranian golden masks and even an Egyptian mummy! Al. Jerozolimskie 3, mnw.art.pl

NEON MUSEUM

Playing a key role in the government’s attempts to fuse socialist ideology with consumerism, the campaign to ‘neon-ize’ Poland saw gloomy cities still bearing the scars of war boldly gleam once more under lights designed and produced by many of the leading

artisans of the time. Salvaged from the scrapheap (in many instances, literally), this museum was created by Ilona Karwinska and David Hill who inadvertently kickstarted a nationwide trend and reignited the country’s appetite for neon. Housing several dozen neons that once lit up Poland, these renovated signs make for Warsaw’s coolest attraction: Instagram them now! ul. Mińska 25 (Soho Factory), neonmuzeum.org

POLIN

Composed of eight galleries, this architectural marvel covers different stages of local Jewish history, from the middle ages to the present day. Highlights of this museum include a staggeringly beautiful replica of the ceiling of Gwoździec synagogue, and a ‘remake’ of a typical inter-war Jewish Warsaw street. That it was named the European Museum of the Year in 2016 such much for its ambitions to focus on more than the Holocaust alone. ul. Anielewicza 6, polin.pl

THE WARSAW RISING MUSEUM

If the throngs and sheer informational overload can often be daunting, it remains the most important museum in the capital, and quite arguably the country. Points of interest are rife and include a life-size replica of a B-24 Liberator plane as well as a claustrophobic ‘sewage tunnel’ through which visitors squeeze to get an idea of the kind of conditions combatants once faced. But it’s not the A-list sights that make the biggest impact, rather the smaller, highly personal curios: a pair of wedding bands forged from bullets; an Omega watch, it’s hands frozen at the same moment a bomb killed its owner; and a lucky cuddly mascot made from a German overcoat. Of course, the aftermath is also covered in heartrending detail and concludes with a 3D film that takes viewers swooping over the smoldering ruins of the capital. ul. Grzybowska 79, 1944.pl

STEFANIA WILCZYŃSKA:

Unsung Hero of Warsaw's Orphans

Janusz Korczak's closest collaborato who shaped the destiny of countless Jewish children in pre-war Warsaw, yet ended tragically amidst the horrors of the Holocaust.

Stefania Wilczyńska, born into affluence to Julian (Izaak) Wilczyński and Salomea née Walfisz, emerged from the shadows of history into the light of recognition. Educated in Warsaw and abroad, she embarked on a career dedicated to the welfare of Jewish children. In 1909, she commenced her journey at a shelter for Jewish children in Warsaw, mark-

ing the genesis of her lifelong commitment. It was there that she crossed paths with Janusz Korczak, igniting a partnership that would define her legacy.

Their collaboration flourished when they assumed leadership roles at the newly established Home for Jewish children on Krochmalna Street in 1912. For over three decades, their shared ethos and innovative pedagogical methods sculpted a nurturing environment. Wilczyńska's ingenuity introduced the duty system, a cornerstone of the Home's operation.

Wilczyńska's significance transcended mere administrative duties. Ida Merżan, a witness to her dedication, acknowledged Wilczyńska's indispensable role in sustaining the Orphan Home, enabling Korczak's prolific literary and pedagogical pursuits.

Despite her pivotal contributions, Wilczyńska's story intersected with tragedy. In August 1942, she, alongside the children and fellow educators, was forcibly transported to the Treblinka II death camp from the Umschlagplatz. A symbolic tribute adorns her parents' grave at the Jewish cemetery on Okopowa Street, commemorating her enduring legacy.
