Versatile Like Orzo

Orzo, a pasta that resembles rice, cooks quickly and looks attractive on a plate. Its versatility is perhaps its biggest advantage – but do you have orzo in your kitchen?

WHERE DOES ORZO COME FROM?

In many countries this kind of rice is nothing new. Orzo has been present on Mediterranean menus a long time. Initially, it was used in soups or as an ingredient in cold salads, e.g. tabbouleh, as well as a rice substitute in traditional dishes like risotto or pilaf. Today, this kind of pasta is most often found in Arabic, Turkish, Greek or Italian dishes. Although the name orzo derives from Italian, it’s called differently in each country of origin.

Today, orzo is widely used in crunchy and nutritious salads and stews. It goes very well with roasted and grilled vegetables too. All the dishes you create with orzo are both healthy and nutritious. Therefore, it is a perfect breakfast ingredient, both as a milk soup with a bit of cinnamon and apple pieces, as well as fried eggs and bacon or tomato salsa.

A PLACE FOR ORZO LOVERS

Orzo, like many other traditional pastas, is made from durum wheat flour called semolina. Durum is a high-protein grain particularly rich in vitamins and contains a lot of fats and folic acid. Unfortunately, the cooking process may deprive it of these valuable properties. Nevertheless, the minerals contained in durum are more immune to the cooking process. When cooking durum pasta, the compounds of phosphorus, potassium, iron, copper, manganese and zinc are preserved. The delicate and slightly buttery orzo seasoned with a little olive oil and a pinch of sea salt is an ideal base for creating an unlimited number of more or less complex, healthy dishes.
