Hi, I’m Valentina Orjuela I am an industrial designer, with an emphasis on product development and design project management. I apply design thinking to find alternatives in complex ecosystems, and I am characterized by the ability to visualize and materialize solutions from an interdisciplinary perspective. I am intuitive, curious, thorough and flexible.

INVESTIGATION The population of Alto Guapaya, Meta, was dedicated to the planting of coca leaves, and thanks to the Peace Process has made the transition to licit crops. In this territory the population is conformed like this:

The income per cocoa bean is less than that of coca, and there are no regulations that guarantee fair trade

During the ideation the possibility of adding a heat source to the device was contemplated, however later it was decided to take advantage of the existence of wood stoves in the houses of Guapaya that are already common for the population, this to facilitate the use and manufacture of the toaster.

Some of the requirements are that the device must operate without electricity, have a capacity of 5 kg and prevent the cocoa bean from coming into contact with the hot surface. There should also be active air circulation and temperature monitoring.

Several tests were carried out with low complexity prototypes, which made it possible to identify faults in the usability of the device, in the functioning of the mechanisms, in the results of the roasting and in the correct functioning of the temperature indicator.

The main attributes that were added based on the checks and socialization with the community were the drum height grading, minimum and maximum fill indicators, and the rectangular tube structure replacing the bent rod.

FERMENTER

Were taken into account requirements such as that the movement of the grain between three stages should be facilitated, that the amount of air that comes into contact with the grain can be regulated at different times of the process, and facilitate filtration and subsequent collection of mucilage (acetic acid).

In addition, the material should not be porous or have chemical coatings.

PACKAGING

As one of the priorities was to facilitate the construction of the artifacts autonomously in the community, elements already existing in territory were included for the designs, as is the case of plastic canes and wood.

Economic activities: Mendicity, car washing and handicraft sales

THE “OKAMA” “Path through the neck” A central object in the material culture of the Emberá people. Along with other weavings, it is now the main source of income as a result of armed displacement.

CAUSES

APPROACH AND IDEATION

Having found the causes of the problem, it is possible to visualize the whole scenario and establish how and how much the designer can contribute.

With clarity on symbolic elements and a collective construction of the narratives it was possible to start thinking about design alternatives.

Each alternative must respond to the following requirements: - Act as an intercultural bridge that allows the recognition of the weaving.

- Generate a sufficient financial reward for a dignified life - Allow and encourage the autonomy of the Emberá community in Bogotá in the face of the support of the proposal in time, and in front of its own work and support

DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING

Among the ways of provoking a symbolic and emotional interaction with the weaved pieces, what stood out the most was the visual narrative and the sound immersion in the territory and the indigenous songs.

Conversations with Emberá weavers allowed a space of remembrance and socialization of the different interpretations of the symbols and stories that were transmitted to each one, which allowed to temporarily mitigate this fragmentation of the culture mentioned above, to give way to the collective development of the final proposal.

FINAL PRODUCT

The symbolic content of the Emberá fabrics can be thought of in the same way that its cosmogony is understood, it is a universe of spaces, characters and periods of time. Therefore, one of the biggest challenges, in addition to making it understandable, was to design a system in which all that complexity was ordered and synthesized into viable elements to produce and sell.

The end result comprises a system of tangible elements, which is the packaging, and not tangible, the sound experiences and the marketing medium.

IDEATION

The ballpoint pen is a product of the reuse of laminated paper, generally excluded from conventional recycling processes.

DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING During the design process, the stage that constituted the greatest effort was experimentation with the material and production procesess.

We did an exploration of mixtures and binders and their behaviors with the paper, in order to achieve the ideal mix combination that would work well in a mold or extruder, that was durable, and that in its final state transported an organic and representative brand aesthetic.

FINAL PRODUCT This pen is thought of as a discursive object, putting on the table the individual possibilities of responding to the climate emergency, opening the conversation about how solutions are in the small actions of many people at once.

One of the tools to achieve this goal is emotional design, taking into account the possibilities that have been explored by various theorists of the discipline in recent decades.

This is the most poisonous vertebrate in the world, 1 gram of poison can kill 15,000 humans. Its name is golden frog, or phyllobates terribilises, is a species endemic to Colombia and is in danger of extinction.

The waste of plastics in Colombia annually is 12 tons, of which only 26% is recycled.

More than half is intended for beverage packaging.

In Colombia, the supply of small-scale greenhouses (for selfconsumption) is almost non-existent.

Oportunity

A small-scale greenhouse, adapted to the needs of family farming, selfconsumption and recreation, of variable dimensions according to the layout of the land, and easy installation.

DEVELOPMENT

Prototyping of profiles for joining the panels

The PET 3 Liter bottles are cut transversely twice to separate the smooth section, and then longitudinally to obtain a 35 x 18 cm sheet. A full panel is made with nine of these pieces.

The remaining material of the bottle is melted and extruded to form the profiles that will allow the joining of this panels to the aluminum structure.

Each 9 m2 greenhouse requires approximately 720 bottles.

Its configuration to be assembled and dismantled helps to bring people with little knowledge to the cultivation of food. Modularity makes it versatile for the available terrain and space, easy to transport and autonomous installing.

How to combine the optimization of materials and processes and aesthetic experimentation?

Design optimization processes tend to fall into orthogonal solutions, either for economic or environmental sustainability purposes, sacrificing experimentation and aesthetic freedom. This process reflects the search for a fluid dialogue between the organic mid century design with the rational processes of material usage.

It was thought that the geometries allowed for bonding without adding additional elements, so that each fitting must work simultaneously in the cutting of the material and in the final assembly, to ensure zero waste.

The armchair can be manufactured with a single cutting process, and packed and transported in a volume of 81 x 122 x 3 cm. There are still details to resolve to completely eliminate waste. This is an ongoing project.
