Despite modestwage growth,a recentreportby the National LowIncomeHousingCoalition(NLIHC)revealedthatnoAmericansta te, city,orcounty’sfairmarketrentisaffordableforaminimum wage worker.Theenormousshortageofaffordablerentalhousingnati onwide forces low-income renters into extremely unstable situations. Mostlowincomehouseholdsspendfarmorethanthecommonly advised30% oftheirincomeonrentalone.Suchsevererentburden leaveslowincomerenterswithinsufficientfinancialresourcesforother necessities,such as transportation,food,healthcare,childcare, retirementsavings,andeducation.Thus,thedecreasingavailabi lityand affordabilityofrentalhousingineverymajorcityisdiminishingthe potentialforlow-incomehouseholdstobreakthecycleofpoverty.
