VVF Year in Review

Dear Friends,

We find ourselves in an extremely interesting position as we close the books on 2014 for the Vail Valley Foundation. While we find ourselves at the end of one journey, the reality of the situation is that we are charging full speed ahead into another, the biggest event this organization has ever undertaken…the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. The final countdown is now measured in weeks, rather than years. This is not to suggest, however, that all of our other events and programs have taken a backseat to the Championships this past year. We have been extremely fortunate to have enjoyed tremendous success in a number of key areas, ensuring that the Vail Valley remains a world-class locale for both residents and guests. As we enter the 2015 home stretch, the eyes of the entire world will literally be focused on Vail and Beaver Creek, although the results of the Championships will not be measured solely during the two-week window of time. They have already been felt over the past four years and our community will continue to reap these benefits long after the Closing Ceremony. In that regard, we enjoyed a great World Cup test event for the new Raptor ladies’ speed course in Beaver Creek during last Thanksgiving. In addition to having the good fortune to run the full-length course, we were also able to play host to Mikaela Shiffrin’s first Giant Slalom podium appearance. The following week featured the traditional Birds of Prey Men’s World Cup competitions, highlighted by the one-two American Giant Slalom result, courtesy of Ted Ligety and Bode Miller. Both the Raptor and Birds of Prey events provided invaluable opportunities to fine tune our operations for 2015. The past year also featured the completion of Phase II of the exciting enhancements at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, highlighted by the construction of the new “Lobby” entrance to the venue and the Ford Family Tribute sculpture. We are also pleased to report that all of the fundraising associated with the Amphitheater project has been completed, thanks to our six $1 million “Angels”. The newly-renovated Amphitheater played host to a recordsetting season of Vail International Dance Festival performances, once again featuring a stellar performance line up, along with a one-night ticket sales record and a 55 percent increase in our digital audience over 2013. Close to 21,000 dance fans experienced the magic of the Festival.

The Vilar Performing Arts Center also enjoyed a tremendous year, highlighted by a Winter Series that featured renowned performers such as Burt Bacharach, Randy Newman, Boz Scaggs and mezzo-soprano opera star Joyce DiDonato. The summer offerings were no less impressive, with Alison Krauss, Lyle Lovett, Trace Adkins and Huey Lewis among the artists that delighted our Vilar Center audiences. The past year also marked the transition to a new era for The Youth Foundation as former Avon Elementary School principal Melisa Rewold-Thuon took the education reins of the Vail Valley Foundation from longtime director Susie Davis. Along with the change in leadership, our third year of collaborative efforts saw continued growth in not only our ability to reach more students with expanded programming, but also in the number of schools that now contain Youth Foundation components. Through our partnership with the Eagle County School District, we are now able to provide over 3,800 local children with focused early childhood education, after school, summer and scholarship programs that support and inspire success at all levels. Throughout the years, the Vail Valley Foundation has continually focused on the horizon, constantly searching for the next great addition to the Vail Valley community. While the 2015 World Championships are obviously just around the corner, we have already spent considerable time discussing the post-World Championships future of both our organization and our valley. None of this would be possible without the continued support of YOU, our Vail Valley Foundation family, both within our community and those extended members that we are so fortunate to benefit from sharing some of your time, as well as your generosity. The past year was truly exceptional, not only for the Vail Valley Foundation, but for the entire Vail Valley, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to share the fruits of the next year with you and the world. Together, we do indeed Elevate the Vail Valley.

Raptor Women’s World Cup

November 29–December 1, 2013 When Austria’s Andrea Fischbacher kicked out of the start of the new Raptor Women’s Downhill racecourse on November 26, a new era of Vail Valley ski racing was ushered in as the World Cup ladies paid their first regularly scheduled visit to Beaver Creek for the world premiere of skiing’s newest jewel.

“I love the new Raptor course. It’s a very challenging and technical course but I had so much pleasure skiing on that snow! Athletics the full new course for Downhill and Super-G, while utilizing the bottom of the Men’s Birds of Prey course for Giant Slalom. The inaugural Raptor weekend of racing was dominated by Switzerland’s Lara Gut, who captured both Downhill and Super-G competitions. Eagle-Vail’s Mikaela Shiffrin also served notice that she would be a force to be reckoned with in Giant Slalom, posting her first career World Cup podium appearance in that discipline with a runner-up showing to Sweden’s Jessica Lindell-Vikarby by just nine-hundredths of a second.

Birds of Prey Men’s World Cup

December 6–8, 2013 While the 2013 Birds of Prey marked the 15th time that the World Cup men have paid an early-season visit to Beaver Creek, it was the first time that they have competed on a different course, running a hybrid configuration of the top half of the new Raptor Women’s speed course and the bottom half of Birds of Prey. The switch was a result of the additional Women’s test event the previous week and the ability to prepare only one full-length Downhill course prior to Thanksgiving week. The change did not seem to bother perennial favorite Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway, who recorded his fourth career win on Birds of Prey, while Switzerland’s Patrick Kueng claimed top honors in Super-G. Sunday’s Giant Slalom signaled both a continuation

American Ski C lassic

March 19–23 On and off the race course, the 2014 Korbel American Ski Classic was an exciting and entertaining display of the talent and camaraderie that has served as the cornerstone of this event for the past 32 years. A new qualifying format for the Conway Cup Community Race got things started on the right foot, while former U.S. Ski Team and X-Games star Casey Puckett and Swedish World Cup slalom ace Ylva Nowen battled through deep and skilled fields to record victories in the Legends of Skiing Giant Slalom. Germany’s Michaela Gerg, the Super-G bronze medalist from Vail and Beaver Creek’s 1989 World Championships, guided her Vail Cascade Resort & Spa Ford Cup team to the gold medal, while Team North America captured the Battle of the Legends Relay title. With the racing concluded, the 2014 Korbel American Ski Classic came to an extremely fitting conclusion Saturday evening with the induction of Austrian superstar Annemare Moser-Proell into the International Ski Racing Hall of Fame at the Legends of Skiing Banquet. As a result of the 2015 World Championships, there will not be a traditional Korbel American Ski Classic this coming March, although elements of the event will be incorporated into the Championships.

GoPro Mountain Games

June 5–8 The 2014 GoPro Mountain Games marked the 13th

annual celebration of adventure sports, lifestyle and music, with this year’s event representing the sixth year that the Vail Valley Foundation has served as the event’s organizer. Vail Village was once again energized and crowded over the four days of the GoPro Games, while an adjusted national television package featured two unique shows on NBC Sports Network and multiple re-airings on Universal Sports and Outside Television. The 2014 GoPro Mountain Games also featured the return of the IFSC Bouldering World Cup competition to its traditional Mountain Plaza venue, resulting in record crowds for the finals, while the Mountains of Music free concert series was expanded. During the course of the event, over 2,500 pro and amateur athletes took to the various starting lines, while over 53,000 spectators took in the action, all resulting in an estimated $4.5 million economic impact for the Town of Vail. The enhanced television coverage of the event generated and estimated 550,000 viewers. Among the athletes in attendance were U.S. Ski Team stars Lindsey Vonn, who tested her fly fishing skills; Steven Nyman,

who competed in the Stand-Up Paddle Down River Sprint and Mountain Biking; and Sochi Olympic freestyle halfpipe gold medalist David Wise, who experimented with the slack line. Total social media impressions totaled over 58 million, while over 200 media were accredited, including representatives of Outside Magazine, Men’s Fitness Magazine, Cosmopolitan Magazine and Elevation Outdoors.

and a much anticipated return for the U.S. Ski Team as Ted Ligety battled snowy conditions and flat light to post his fourth consecutive Giant Slalom win in Beaver Creek, while teammate Bode Miller regained his old form to record a second place result. Five of the six Raptor and Birds of Prey races were televised live on NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network, resulting in domestic viewership of over 5.7 million, while the international television audience for both weekends of competition resulted in over 350 million viewers. Over 22,000 spectators enjoyed the racing action on-site over the course of the two weeks, while the two events provided 2015 World Championships organizers with invaluable opportunities to test systems and procedures that will be used during the Championships.

U S A Pro C hallenge

August 23 Despite intermittent rain and wind, an estimated

30,000 cycling fans crowded into Vail Village and lined the Time Trial course to watch the best road cyclists in the world do battle with the iconic 10-mile uphill Race of Truth and the competitors did not disappoint. Tejay van Garderen of BMC Racing Team emerged victorious, finishing in 24:26, not only winning the stage, but shattering his previous course record of 25:02, set in 2013, by 41 seconds. In addition, van Garderen extended his overall lead to 1 minute, 32 seconds heading into the final day of racing. The BMC racer outdistanced runner-up Tom Danielson of Team Garmin-Sharp (25:19), while Romania’s Serghei Tvetcov of Team Jelly Belly finished third. “Winning (the Vail time trial) both times is just awesome,” offered van Garderen. “I love racing in Colorado. To have competition like Tommy D., Serghei and Rafał Majka just goes to show that this race is one of the highest-class races in the world. To win it for the second time is no easy feat and I’m really honored.” Sochi freestyle Olympian and Vail native Heidi Kloser was on hand to help present the awards.

2015 F I S Alpine World Ski C hampionships

The countdown to the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships is now measured in weeks, rather than years, and the final touches are now being put on all aspects of the event. While the coming month will be filled with activity, we are confident that the years of planning and preparation have paid off and that the world will once again experience a truly memorable World Championships. Having wrapped up the Final Inspection in September, we are literally and figuratively in the final mile of our journey, which included the final dress rehearsal with the 2014 Audi Birds of Prey Ski World Cup and of course, February 2, 2015, when we will have the distinct pleasure of welcoming the world back to Vail and Beaver Creek. The past year has featured numerous accomplishments, including the debut of the new Raptor Women’s speed course in Beaver Creek and successful World Cup test events for Women and Men. We have also completed the first phase of construction on the Red Tail Stadium complex, identified the domestic television schedule and secured 100 percent of our volunteer needs. As you read this recap, we will have approximately 30 days before the world comes calling. We hope you will find a way to join in the celebration of the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. The time for dreaming these Championships has come to a close. Now, it is time to Live and Share 2015 with each other and with the world.

Vilar Performing Arts Center

Beaver Creek’s Vilar Performing Arts Center celebrated its 16th anniversary in 2014 and has solidified its position as the premiere year-round performing arts venue in the region, as well as one of the top resort theatres in the nation. The 2013-14 performance calendar was once again graced by a diverse lineup of entertainment options that included concerts, national touring Broadway musicals, classical music, dance, family programs, a full-scale opera production, comedy and an array of community events.

“This hall…the sound…it’s like candy for me playing here.” C hris Thile Winter highlights included international opera sensation Joyce DiDonato, the comedy of Jim Gaffigan, the Haifa Symphony Orchestra of Israel, the Broadway production of “Mamma Mia!”, music legend Boz Scaggs, and Grammy® Awardwinning singer John Legend. Summer’s sold-out season included Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas, Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, country music superstar Trace Adkins, comedian Brian Regan, music icon Huey Lewis and blues star Joe Bonamassa. In addition, the fall Underground Sound Series continued the tradition of presenting up-and-coming artists to a series focused primarily on the locals of the Vail Valley. The 2013 Underground Sound roster of artists featured artists such as David Wilcox and Von Grey. The Vilar Center continued its role of serving as an invaluable community asset, nurturing and hosting a variety of youth performances through the Community Performance Fund and the STARS (Support the Arts Reaching Students) series. Over the course of the past year, the Vilar Performing Arts Center featured over 90 performances, with an estimated audience base of close to 44,000 people.

Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater

Phase II of the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater remodel was officially unveiled on June 17 when the Vail Valley Foundation opened the gates for the kickoff performance of the annual Hot Summer Nights free concert series following a winter’s worth of work on the venue’s main entry. Designed to provide a new entrance experience and additional shelter from inclement weather, the new structure, dubbed “The Lobby”, serves as a social gathering point prior to entering the Amphitheater. Ticket and bag checking is facilitated at this point in order to allow for smooth entry to the venue. The Lobby is covered by a specially-designed tensile membrane canopy structure. By nature of its orientation, dramatic shape and soaring forms, the canopy serves as a visual icon that not only identifies the Amphitheater entrance, but one that is visible from areas within the park as well. Unique amenities contained within the structure include a mini-stage that can accommodate pre-show performances, a new concession station and restrooms that will serve Ford Park on a daily basis during the summer season. The Lobby also houses the Ford Family Tribute, a series of symbolic sculptures and interpretive elements intended as a new landmark in the Town of Vail to celebrate the legacy and influence of President and Mrs. Ford and their family. The Ford Amphitheater component of the overall Ford Park project was partially funded by a $2.1 million portion of the former Town of Vail Conference Center Funds, the distribution of which Vail voters overwhelming approved in a special election in November of 2011. The Vail Valley Foundation raised the remainder of the $10 million needed to complete the project.

Bud Light Hot Summer Nights

The Bud Light Hot Summer Nights free concert series is firmly established as the social event of the summer, turning the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater into a weekly gathering spot for both locals and guests alike.

World rockers Rusted Root entertain one of the largest crowds in the history of the Bud Light Hot Summer Nights free concert series for the official reopening of the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in June.

This past summer’s highlights included the official coming out party for the recently renovated venue, featuring world rockers Rusted Root and one of the largest crowds in the 18-year history of the facility. Other series highlights included performances by the Black Crowes’ Rich Robinson and Lukas Nelson and the promise of the Real band, as well as the annual dance collaboration with the Vail International Dance Festival, the 8150 Dance Challenge officially kicking off the 2014 Festival. All told, approximately 31,325 locals and guests experienced the Ford Amphitheater via the nine-show Bud Light Hot Summer Nights series. Moe’s Original ShowDown Town

Since its inception, Moe’s Original BBQ ShowDown Town, presented by the Town of Eagle, in Eagle Town Park has quickly developed into the official “down valley” weekly summer gathering spot for the residents of Eagle and Gypsum, attracting in the neighborhood of 1,200 guests per show. The first show of the season had one of the largest crowds ever with almost 2,000 guests attending. The number of performances was increased from 6 to 7 for 2014, taking the series well into August. This increased number of shows was viewed favorably by the Town of Eagle, which had requested additional shows.

Vail International Dance Festival

The Vail International Dance Festival continued to build on its reputation as one of the leading festivals in the world, showcasing 11 stellar performances, featuring world caliber artists and pairings, firmly establishing Vail as the “Dance Destination”. Over 21,000 dance fans had the unique opportunity to experience a format of performances that brings full companies to Vail, as well as smaller ensembles and soloists. In addition, the Festival matched some of the world’s best dancers as guest stars with dance companies they have never worked with, adding value to already important performances.

The prime example of this is came on Opening Night, when the Pennsylvania Ballet performed for the first time at the Festival, with guest artists Tiler Peck and Herman Cornejo headlining the production of Balanchine’s Rubies. Both made newsworthy debuts in these iconic leading roles, noted by the New York Times in their announcement of the 2014 season.

“The setting of the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater here is spectacular. Audiences can see the evergreens and ski slopes that cover the Rocky Mountains. And on Friday night, while taking our seats beforehand, we could watch star dancers practicing their steps on the uncurtained open-air stage.” Alastair Macaulay, New York Times Peck, Cornejo and Robert Fairchild also performed as guests with the Martha Graham Dance Company, while other highlights included street dance emanating from Detroit, Chicago and Memphis, to classical Indian dance, to the best of ballet from New York and London, to the best of dance on television. The Festival also featured the Vail premiere of a collection of ballets created for celebrated ballerina Wendy Whelan, along with world premieres commissioned by the Festival, including new works by acclaimed choreographers Brian Brooks, Lil Buck, Fang-Yi Sheu, Shantala Shivalingappa and Matthew Neenan. In addition to the performances, the 2014 Festival also showcased seven Master Classes, five Dancing in the Streets events, one Flash Mob and 90 local children participating in the Celebrate the Beat program. The Festival enjoyed record ticket sales, registering a 25 percent increase since 2012, resulting in a $3.4 million economic impact for the Town of Vail.

Education Like many other communities in this country, our leaders are seeing the critical need to carefully examine our public education system and to implement much needed change and reform in order to ensure that our children have the best educational opportunities available to them. Our school system is under tremendous budgetary pressure and unable to meet all of the needs of each child. The publicprivate partnership we have created is critically important in addressing the needs of the whole child. These needs include early childhood development, after school academic and enrichment programs, summer academic and recreational programs, teenage mentorship and leadership development, and college and vocational scholarship opportunities.

Early C hildhood

Through meaningful collaboration and dialogue with community stakeholders and solid relationships with parents, VVF’s Youth Foundation’s Early Childhood Education has been instrumental in leading the movement toward a more cohesive and supported Early Childhood community that will best support families with young children. With a goal of preparing children from birth to 5 years old

and their parents to be kindergarten ready, we strive to ensure a complete cradle to college pipeline by maintaining relationships and assessing student needs through high school and beyond Great Start

The Great Start Program is a six-week summer kindergarten bridge program that is operated in partnership with Eagle County Schools. The program targets children that have not had a formal preschool experience or have been identified by their Head Start, Colorado Preschool Program or preschool instructors as not yet exhibiting the skills necessary to be successful in kindergarten. Children attend class four hours per day, four days per week, with the program curriculum focusing on social-emotional, language, literacy and mathematics growth. The program utilizes the Creative Curriculum for lesson planning and Teaching Strategies GOLD for evaluating student growth.

Magic Bus

The Magic Bus program is a mobile preschool classroom that travels to low income neighborhoods to provide a quality early childhood learning experience for children ages 3-5 who do not have the opportunity to attend a traditional preschool. A two-hour class is conducted with the children twice weekly to give them the skills and experiences they need to be ready for kindergarten. The curriculum includes language development, early literacy and math, science and social studies, music, art and social emotional development. Four home visits occur with each family annually to discuss children’s progress and coach parents on how to best help their children at home with developmental goals.

Success at Six exists to provide financial assistance for kindergarten tuition so that all children in Eagle County are able to attend fullday public kindergarten regardless of family income level. Scholarships are awarded based on documented financial need and extenuating circumstances. Scholarship costs are shared between the Vail Valley Foundation and Eagle County Schools. Some additional scholarships are also provided for charter school students and the cost is split with the school.

K-12

Extended learning time provides an opportunity to help students reach grade level proficiency across all socioeconomic and cultural landscapes. Our K-12 programs improve children’s academic results and engagement in school through individualized learning opportunities with an emphasis on achievement. We focus on the “whole child” through enrichment experiences that include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), nutrition, character development, athletics, dance, music and arts. Sowing Seeds improves student’s knowledge of life science and healthy eating through learning the origin of food in outdoor gardens and specially designed science curriculum. The maintenance of outdoor gardens, which involves young and old alike, creates opportunities for students to develop positive new role models and mentors. First Notes

Sowing Seeds

First Notes, a project of VVF’s The Youth Foundation, is a music education program inspired by Venezuela’s network of youth orchestras known as El Sistema. The program utilizes orchestra instruments to teach the basics of classical music. Students and their families are exposed to music education through instruction, practice, performance and community events. Each student receives an instrument and is required to care for their instrument and practice at home. First Notes meets several days a week as part of The Youth Foundation’s PwrHrs after-school programming and provides a safe and nurturing environment to build self-esteem and positive behavior by using music as a vehicle for social change.

Sowing Seeds provides students and their families with a meaningful and hands-on approach to learn about healthy eating and cooking, paving the way for the entire community to create better eating habits and make healthier choices. The program accomplishes this by implementing and maintaining school gardens in collaboration with a specially aligned school science curriculum.

Operated locally at individual schools, PwrHrs uses local teachers and facilities combined with a powerful 6:1 student/teacher ratio that accelerates growth for students. PwrHrs provides extended learning and enrichment opportunities such as nutrition,

character building, athletics, dance, music and art to students three to four days per week. The additional time spent on academics and participating in safe after-school enrichment activities improves academic scores and promotes social, emotional and physical well-being. PwrHrs Summer

PwrHrs Summer programs exist to improve students’ academic performance and engagement in school through extending learning opportunities, with an emphasis on closing the achievement gap and reducing the effect of the “Summer Slide”. The program serves students that indicate a likelihood of dropping out of school, such as low academic performance, behavioral issues and high truancy. PwrHrs Summer focuses on academic and enrichment activities for four weeks during the summer. Academic portions of the program focus heavily on literacy and math, with hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programing. Through academic extended learning opportunities, especially in reading, math and science, in addition to enrichment activities, Summer PwrHrs assists kids in maintaining and advancing in their academic performance in a safe, productive and motivational environment. KidSTRONG

KidSTRONG provides engaging activities that not only increase physical activity and nutritional knowledge, but inspire self-

confidence and promote overall wellbeing. Operated during the PwrHrs extended learning program, each KidSTRONG class has a specific lesson plan that provides kids with the foundation to build healthy habits and self-confidence through a curriculum based game or introduction to a new sport and healthy snack. As a result of the KidSTRONG program, it is estimated that students receive an extra 57 hours of physical activity over the school year while also developing a knowledge surrounding fitness, nutrition and overall wellness. Girl PowHER

Girl PowHER is an empowerment program for young women, aimed at fostering positive development & family/ school engagement through sports, STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Math) enrichment, mentorship and self-awareness. The program can benefit any girl, but targets those with less than proficient test scores, poor grades, high absenteeism, generational drop-out experiences within the family, low levels of parent involvement, and identified social/emotional issues. At each school location, the group meets once a week to participate in an activity designed to push their personal boundaries, provide positive mentors and instill group support. Girls are additionally required to attend an academic tutoring session each week in middle school as a component of program participation. Community involvement activities in the form of volunteer opportunities and networking are additional required components.

Celebrate the Beat

The league is gender specific and non-competitive until the final week, which includes a tournament. There are three sessions; spring, fall and winter (indoor league). This program is the only opportunity for middle school students to play soccer at the school level.

Celebrate the Beat is designed to teach inspirational music and dance classes that help children discover their potential by motivating them to believe in themselves, value artistic expression, and develop a personal standard of excellence. We endeavor to use dance as the medium to teach children valuable life lessons: that energy, discipline, hard work, commitment, and joyful concentration can lead to success. Founded as an associate program of the National Dance Institute, CTB was created by Jacques dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Amboise in the belief that the arts have a unique power to engage children and motivate them toward excellence. By teaching high-energy, joyful, physically and mentally demanding classes, the program helps instill confidence, pride, work ethic, and a mentality of never giving up. For many children CTB is a life-changing event; for all, it is an amazing experience they will never forget.

COPA Edwards is an eight-week summer soccer tournament for more than 600 youth (50 percent female and 50 percent male) ages 3 through 18. The program consists of more than 50 teams with 50 volunteer coaches. Families and neighbors work together to positively impact youth through the game of soccer, with the intention of increasing physical activity and building community. This celebration of soccer, teamwork, and family places an emphasis on experiential learning, rather than winning or losing.

Anti-Bullying

STARS â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Support The Arts Reaching Students

Anti-bullying is committed to instill confidence and increase awareness of bullying. The program also works to provide students with tools to prevent bullying with a focus on prevention, intervention, and empowerment. Anti-Bullying utilizes jui jitsu to teach non-violent evasion. This disciplined art form teaches students self-discipline, control and confidence to avoid confrontational situations.

The Vilar Performing Arts Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s STARS series of performances is offered to promote artistic, educational and cultural enrichment to local students, with in-school workshops and daytime shows at the theatre. Each year, the Vilar Center provides transportation and tickets to more than 5,000 Eagle and Lake County students to expose them to the thrill of live performing arts.

COPA Youth Soccer

Youth Foundation Dollars for Scholars Academic Soccer

This program is a school year academic-based middle school program that goes hand-in-hand with after-school tutoring. Students are held to high eligibility standards and must successfully complete the academic tutoring in order to participate in the athletic component.

The mission of Youth Foundation Dollars for Scholars is to create a personal, streamlined and connected program to manage donors and students in the scholarship process and to provide support with the goal of 100 percent college graduation rate. Our single scholarship application matches students to various local and national scholarships, while 17 community

organizations are currently selecting their scholarship recipients through our program, with more to come. The Youth Foundation partners with Scholarship America® to create a comprehensive, community-based online scholarship application process. This process not only provides financial assistance through the awarding of scholarships, but also builds a community of engaged donors and supports students during their college experience, while also helping students transition into the workforce following graduation. We are the first Dollars for Scholars® affiliate in Colorado.

Vail Global Energy Forum

The 2014 edition of the Vail Global Energy Forum once again featured some of the industry’s prominent global leaders in a discussion on how to best provide the energy necessary to support a productive global economy in an increasingly green, secure and affordable manner. Conducted March 1-2, this year’s accomplished speakers included George Shultz, Former Secretary of State; John Hickenlooper, Governor of Colorado; Jim Brown, President, Halliburton; Arun Majumdar, Vice President of Energy, Google, and more. Featured topics included: Natural Gas as a Future Fuel Strategy for the Transportation Sector for the Global Economy, Natural Gas Exportation, US Energy Independence, Hydraulic Fracturing and Horizontal Drilling, Progress on Sustainable Energy and Cost Competitiveness. A new component to the event was the addition of an Energy

Village Expo. The Energy Village proved to be a fun, familyfriendly expo area, with interactive booths and demonstrations about new energy technologies and initiatives.

The Vail Global Energy Forum is organized by Dr. Franklin Orr and Dr. James Sweeney of Stanford University, along with Jay Precourt and Carl Colby, in collaboration with The Vail Valley Foundation.

Vilar Center Community Performance Fund

Each year, this fund underwrites the technical, production, labor and theatre usage cost for approximately 10 local dance, music and theatrical performances. The fund provides local artists the opportunity to experience the excitement of performing on an incredible stage with professional production qualities and support. Each year, the fund supports Vail Valley community arts groups with in-kind contributions exceeding $60,000.

Vilar Center Community Use Fund The Vilar Performing Arts Center opens its doors to other Eagle County nonprofits each year by hosting fundraising events, lectures and performances at a reduced cost to organizers. Approximately 25 local groups take advantage of the Fund annually.

Arts In Healing

Created in 2009, the Vilar Performing Arts Center joined forces with the Vail Valley Medical Center to launch Arts in Healing, a program that brings various performing artists from the Vilar Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lineup into the Medical Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health care settings. The program provides performances and interactive arts events to individuals who, due to illness, age, disability and challenging socio-economic and geographic circumstances, have little or no access to the arts.

The Vilar Center provides local music, dance and drama students tickets to select performances at no charge, giving them the rare opportunity to experience renowned artists and fueling their dreams of one day performing on stage.

Vail Valley Athlete Commission

In conjunction with Vail Resorts and the Town of Vail, the Vail Valley Foundation annually awards financial support to deserving individual athletes competing in an international arena to assist with training and travel expenses. In 2014, the Commission awarded funds to 12 local athletes, enabling them to compete around the globe. Athlete Commission grants are awarded twice a year, once for summer athletes and a second cycle for winter athletes. Athletes receiving funding in 2014 included freestyle skier Heidi Kloser, freeskier Taylor Seaton, alpine racer Erika Ghent, U.S. Disabled Team skier Ralph Green and Nordic skier Sylvan Ellefson.

Annual Grants

Since its inception in 1981, the Vail Valley Foundation has contributed more than $14.6 million to other local nonprofit organizations and projects that reflect the Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission statement of enhancing the spirit of the Vail Valley. In 2014, the VVF awarded $674,908 to local nonprofits, enabling them to continue serving the community at large.
