The tragic loss of former 41-year-old West Coast Eagle premiership player Adam Selwood on the weekend, only three months after the death of his twin brother Troy, has certainly had a profound impact on everyone in the football community and beyond.
It is difficult to comprehend such events, and find the right words to write about this, but I know the hearts and prayers of our VAFA community are with the Selwood family at this most difficult time. Adam is the older brother of Scott Selwood who played in the VAFA with Ivanhoe in the Division 2 Premiership in 2022.
It was late 2022 when, as part of our due diligence in establishing a strategic plan for the VAFA, that we surveyed all Clubs on a variety of issues, including ranking the most challenging issues where support was needed. Not surprisingly, given the impact of COVID, the two standout responses were:
• Mental Health Support Programs
• Training Seminars for Volunteers
To answer that call, VAFA management partnered with Tackle Your Feelings to deliver a mental health program to our Clubs in 2023 focused on players and coaches. Initially 12 Clubs took up the free workshop service. In 2024, that expanded to 21 Clubs and over 900 participants. This season to date, we have delivered to a further 8 Clubs and have 17 more registered. Clearly the reputation of the success of the program is spreading and more and more Clubs are taking up the offer to support their players and coaches.
Along with SANFL, VAFA is the biggest Tackle Your Feelings customer and we have signed onto the program through to the end of 2026.
I encourage all our VAFA Clubs to take advantage of this free service and book in a session in order to support your players and coaches.
To compliment the Tackle Your Feelings club workshops, after 12 months of investigation, we engaged Converge International in May 2024, to make three free counselling services available to all VAFA players coaches. Titled ‘Player Assistance Program’ (PAP), we extended this service in 2025 to cover all registered VAFA umpires. Recommended by AFL and used by the AFL players, ours is the only community football league in Australia that offers this service. We will be promoting the PAP directly to all VAFA players in the coming weeks to ensure they are fully aware of this service.

approach for Clubs is to attract more volunteers to focus on smaller tasks, rather than replace the one or two people who used to do everything.
The VAFA Club Support hub (found on the VAFA website under ‘Club Admin’) offers a comprehensive suite of resources designed to empower club volunteers across all facets of their operations.
Resources Tab : This section provides clubs with vital tools for effective management, including links to the AFL Club Help website and the Australian Sports Commission’s Game Plan platform. These resources assist in areas such as recruitment, club management, policy development, and growth strategies, particularly focusing on women and girls in football.
volunteering remains one of the greatest challenges for all Clubs to address
Grants Tab : VAFA facilitates access to various funding opportunities through organizations like Sport and Recreation Victoria, AFL Victoria, and local councils. Clubs can find guidance on writing successful grant applications and are encouraged to utilize the Grant Support Request Form for assistance.
Welfare Tab : Resources and policies addressing key areas such as mental health, child safeguarding, and harm minimization related to gambling.
VAFA Club Share : This initiative showcases successful programs and community engagements from various clubs, including the Wings Program by Hawthorn AFC, Tackle Your Feelings Program by MHSOB, Sponsorship management from De La Salle etc. It serves as a platform for the VAFA to share best practices and share innovative ideas.
Helpful Websites Tab: A broader network of external organizations and resources is available, offering additional support in areas like volunteering, health promotion, child safety, and sports medicine.
I implore anyone who is in need of mental health support and doesn’t know where to turn, to please utilise these counselling services.
Coincidently, this week is National Volunteer Week and we wish to acknowledge and thank all the amazing people in our VAFA community who volunteer their time to ensure our Clubs and Association can continue to deliver the best community football environment on offer.
Since COVID, the number of volunteers servicing community sport across Australia have dropped off and volunteering remains one of the greatest challenges for all Clubs to address. The best practice

Top 5 kick clear after a soggy Saturday
A two-game divide has opened between the Top 5 and Bottom 5 in William Buck Premier Men’s after just the second wetweather Saturday of the season.
Old Brighton have established themselves as the team to beat, kicking two games clear on top after dismantling Old Xaverians at Toorak Park. The Tonners found another gear in the second term, booting the first 5 goals of the quarter to jump out to a 35-point lead before Xavs kicked a couple late to reduce their half-time deficit to 22 points.
But after the visitors kicked the first two goals of the third quarter, the result was never really in doubt – Old Brighton powering away with 5 goals to 1 in the last term to post an imposing 61-point win that gives them a two-game advantage on top of the ladder.
Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “It felt like both teams had built up to this game with some great form in the previous weeks. “We know how dangerous Xavs can be with their ability to punish teams with quick and clean ball movement. Fortunately, we adapted well and were able to simplify the game to some extent and gain/hold territory. Pressure and defence created opportunity, which we capitalised on this week.
Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “Disappointing day in the end. We were certainly prepared and determined to bring our best, but never really got in the game to show it. “Credit to OB who were cleaner, more efficient and played the conditions better than we did. We had a couple go down early in the game, which didn’t help us late, but certainly no excuses on our end, beaten by a better team on the day and the form side in the competition.”
St Kevin’s and Collegians played out another nailbiter at Harry Trott, with SKOB ultimately finding a way to get over the line for a 7-point win. The Lions’ 13-point half-time lead was the largest margin of the match, before St Kevin’s kicked the only 2 goals of the third term to lead by 2 points at the last change, extending that to 8 points, courtesy of a Will Pfeiffer goal at the 12-minute mark.
Scott Beilby made it a 1-point game at the 18-minute mark and a tense 10 minutes ensued before best afield Angus Hanrahan sealed the deal for SKOB, who hung on for a hard-fought win that defended their Top 4 position while relegating Collegians 2 games off the pace.
Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “Both teams gave great effort over the full 120 minutes of the game, which makes the win even more important. “The thing that pleased us the most is that we had a very clear plan at half time, and then handed it over to our players to go execute. I thought our leaders set a great platform,
and the remainder of the players followed. “I thought we handled the minutes incredibly well in that second half and was thrilled for our players to get that result in such a close game.”
Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “Our first half was strong, as we were able to win the territory battle and get the reward on the scoreboard. “We had a disappointing third quarter where we didn’t execute the basics well enough. St Kevin’s played smart footy late in the game, protecting their lead, and ultimately deserved the result.”
The other thriller of the round was at Camberwell as University Blacks hung on after Old Scotch made a monumental final quarter charge. The Blacks dominated the opening term, booting 6 goals to 1, then edged out to a 43-point half-time lead. The reigning premiers narrowed the gap to 38 at the last change, before the game completely flipped.
Old Scotch took control, ramming on 6 goals to 1 to close within a goal at the 27-minute mark. When Angus Jones threw his boot at a loose ball bobbling across the goalsquare, it appeared that scores were about to be tied up. But Jones’ soccer kick clipped the goalpost, with the final siren sounding 20 seconds later to hand the Blacks a critical 5-point win in the race to avoid the Bottom 2.
Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “We were able to get off to a very good start in the first half and had opportunities to widen the gap early in the third, which we weren’t able to do. “Scotch came back strongly in the fourth quarter and nearly went past us. We need to put four quarters together to reach our full potential as a team.”
Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “It was a tale of two halves again for us. Uni Blacks controlled the territory in the first half and were able to capitalise on their opportunities. “We were really pleased with the response after half-time, where we arrested the momentum in the third before playing our game with far more efficiency in the final quarter. Our tackle numbers and pressure acts increased significantly, and we created far more scoring opportunities.”
It took four quarters for Old Haileybury to get the better of University Blues at Melbourne Uni Oval. The Blues led at the first three changes but couldn’t quite shake the Bloods, who remained within striking distance after just one was goal kicked in the third term.
The final quarter belonged to the Bloods as they kicked 5 unanswered goals to come from behind for a 21-point win – their third in a row. Andreas Stefanakis continues to be a game-breaker with another 4 goals for the Bloods, giving him 17 for the season. Josh Gasparini’s run of excellent form also
continued, with 34 disposals (22 contested, 5 tackles, 8 clearances, 6 Inside 50s and 7 Rebound 50s).
James Stewart booted 3 for the Blues, while Darcy Chirgwin continues to lead the competition’s disposal count with another 31 to go with his 11 clearances and 9 tackles.
Daniel Ward (Old Haileybury): “A satisfying win in tough conditions. We gave up some easy goals in the first half, and the Blues took advantage. “We dominated territory in the third quarter but couldn’t put the score on the board as much as we would have liked. “Nine points down at the last change, we had to be up for the fight, and pleasingly, we were. Brave win and very happy to keep Blues goalless in the second half.”
Matt Smith (Uni Blues): “Ultimately, one of the most disappointing losses for the year. “It was a really promising first half, which we were able to control the majority of, and at times felt like we should’ve been further in front than we were on the scoreboard. “To come out and perform how we did is really difficult to accept. “To Haileybury’s credit, they were able to suck the life out of the game in the third quarter and force a genuine scrap in which they were able to capitalise off the back of.”
The final game of Round 6 was at Waverley Oval as St Bernard’s led at every change against De La Salle. The Snowdogs booted the first five majors before the hosts finally goaled midway through the second term. Hopes of a De La fightback grew after they kicked 3 goals to 1 in the third term to close within 17 points at the last change, and when Ryan O’Meara goaled in the opening minute of the final term, an upset suddenly seemed possible.
However, St Bernard’s settled, and Matthew Watson ultimately put the game to bed with a goal entering time-on, as the Snowdogs improved their away record to 4-0 with a 32-point victory that keeps them on Top 4 pace and a couple of games clear of the chasing pack.
Steve Alessio (St Bernard’s): “We were prepared for a De La Salle team that was hungry for their first win. We had to withstand a physical opening in the first quarter. We managed to hold out and then add some early scoreboard pressure ourselves. “Ultimately, we were able to manage the wet conditions a little better on the day with some solid pressure and contested work.”
Nick Hyland (De La Salle): “A similar story again this week. Had patches where we were well and top in the game but didn’t get any reward on the scoreboard and couldn’t put the opposition under any scoreboard pressure. “Sloppy skill errors and some lapses in concentration proved really costly. However, I was proud of how we hung in the contest and closed the margin to 11 points, before being overrun late in the game.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S
The Fields flex their muscle against St Kevin’s in top of the table clash
Round 6 of William Buck Premier Women’s did not disappoint with a wet and windy weekend providing some good old fashioned hardnosed amateurs footy. The weekend of Premier Women’s action was headlined by a matchup between the two undefeated sides in the competition, Caulfield Grammarians and St Kevin’s.
Caulfield Grammarians have been ultra-impressive to start season 2025, backing up a preliminary final appearance in 2024. On Saturday the Fields travelled to TH King Oval to face a similarly undefeated St Kevin’s side who are looking to go one better after their grand final defeat in 2024.
Both sides came into the game in red-hot form with five wins a piece without a loss. The Fields were stronger within the contest throughout the second half and pulled away to win 5.4 (34) to 2.1 (13).
Caulfield coach Danielle Distefano was full of praise for her side’s pressure and adaption to the elements. “I was really pleased with our pressure and our ability to change our tempo and adjust to the conditions.”
In addition, Distefano emphasised the performances of some of her key cogs in the middle of the ground. “Our midfielders fought hard all day led by Ellie Cleland on the inside and Rosie Finster on the outside.”
Old Geelong looked to continue their bright start to the season when they hosted Beaumaris at Como Park. The OG’s put together a strong four-quarter performance and were able to outclass the Sharks 4.8 (32) to 3.4 (22).
The OG’s young stars led from the front with huge efforts from Abby Latimer and Mietta Passon. Further to that, the OG’s blooded four new players, two below the age of 20, in a showcase of the depth of talent Old Geelong have coming through their program.
Old Geelong’s coach Jack Crameri was pleased with the result and is preparing his side for the tough challenge that awaits them next week, St Kevin’s. “Massive challenge this week coming with St Kevin’s. They’ve been a dominant figure in the competition for many years and we can’t wait to see how we shape up.”
Beaumaris coach Sam Calogero was similarly pleased with his side’s efforts despite the result and believes this is all a part of the process of jumping up in grade. “We will take some great learnings, and this is all a part of coming up and starting to believe in ourselves. We will keep working tirelessly to work on our game.”
Old Scotch faced a tough test this week after a strong round 5 performance against West Brunswick. The Cardinals ventured to W.T Peterson Oval to face Fitzroy and the 2024 Premiers were able to combat a slow first term to overpower the Roys 6.7 (43) to 2.0 (12).
Mia Cowan and Eloise Defina put in scintillating performances with two goals apiece to lead the Cardinals to a gritty away win. Cardinals coach Dean Anderson was pleased with his sides performance especially when dealing with the harsh conditions on the day. “We had an excellent clearance game and were able to keep the ball in our half of the ground. We handled the wet conditions very well when at times it was pouring rain.”
With a mouth-watering clash scheduled for next week against the Fields, Anderson referenced the high player participation his side has seen and their focus on the ladder leaders next Saturday.
“We have played a relatively high amount of players through the seniors so far this year. We will be trying to settle the team down over the next month. We are really looking forward to playing an undefeated Caulfield next week.”
Cooper Watkins
The Roys were never able to gain ascendancy within the conditions and were well beaten on the inside and spread from the contest. Chloe Haritopoulos was a standout performer for the home side and continues to build into the season nicely.
In the final game of Round 6, West Brunswick 10.7 (67) defeated Williamstown CYMS 1.1 (7) in the Magpies second win of season 2025.
Coach Ryan Wardel was extremely positive about his sides efforts and believes there’s more room for growth. “Moving forward, we’ll continue developing our current strengths in contest and ball movement. It was pleasing to get some reward on the scoreboard this week, it’s a result the group needed.”
Sissi Scott-Hickie and Claudia Piggott were two of the Magpies best in an emphatic win at home. Their efforts will be rewarded with a short break before taking on Old Geelong in two weeks’ time.
CY’s coach Xavier Smith was firm in his disappointment of the result and his praise for the Magpies. However, Smith focused on the youth of his side and the need to keep turning up each week and developing as a unit. “We were completely outplayed by a more experienced and well-structured team. We’re continuing to build on our connection as a team, with such a young core group, that will take time to develop against Premier quality opposition.”
Round 7 reads as an exciting weekend of Premier Women’s football with Old Scotch facing undefeated Caulfield Grammarians, St Kevin’s taking on Old Geelong, Kew battling it out with Williamstown and the headliner between Beaumaris and Fitzroy in which both clubs will be playing in the ‘Shining Bright for Holly and Bianca’ game.

Reward for effort for OMs, Hoers back on top
A third of the way into the 2025 Premier B season, and the thin margins between the sides is the story so far, with the Caulfield Grammarians, Old Melburnians and OGs each jagging important wins across the first truly wintery Saturday of the season.
Paul Satterley’s Fields started the year shakily, 1-3 after a month of play with comprehensive defeats at the hands of Old Carey and Old Ivanhoe to respond from.
‘Satts’ and his side have since evened the ledger, following Round Five’s thrilling win over Old Melburnians with a professional performance at home against Williamstown CYMS, staving off a final term comeback to win by 19 points, 11.16 (82) to 9.9 (63).
“I could not be happier just with how our players (went) about their business,” said Satterley on Sunday evening. Ultimately it was the middle quarters that separated the two sides, with eight Fields goals to four from the CYs setting up a 39-point game at the final turn.
Expecting the CYs to charge - Con Terzoglou’s men have lost just the one final quarter this year - Satterley’s side was able to turn the game into a dogfight late and hold onto the win, despite conceding 3.3 (21) whilst scoring just the one point in the last. In just his 13th senior VAFA game, Jack Atkinson enjoyed a breakout performance, snagging four goals from nine kicks.
For the second week in three, CYs coach Con Terzoglou was forced to attempt a comeback from more than 50 point in arrears, lapses across the first three quarters proving costly. “We’re well aware that there’s a problem, and we’re in the process of trying to work out how to fix it. You don’t want to have to rely on a late start, because eventually you’ll be too far away.”
Nathan Brown’s luckless run to begin 2025 looks to be at an end, the Old Melburnians drawing a line beneath a three-game losing skid with a crucial win over an inform Old Camberwell
Coming into the contest, the 1-4 Redlegs had won 13 of their 20 quarters, the equal-most in the competition. With three of its losses coming by under a kick, Brown’s side knew it was close enough to compete with an Old Camberwell side coming into the Elsternwick Park clash atop the ladder.
And thankfully for those of the OMs persuasion on Saturday afternoon, once Adam Richardson put his side 21 points clear in the third the margin would not close to beneath 20 points. The eventual 13.12 (90) to 9.7 (61) result knocked the Wellers loose from the top, and saw the Old Melburnians remain in touch with the chasing pack.
Old Camberwell coach Neil Connell said his side was lucky to not be six goals down at quarter time after allowing the Redlegs easy shots at goal through unforced errors.
“They have a mature group of players who have previously played Premier footy for a few years. They were cleaner around the contest, and made us pay from turnovers,” Connell said. Key Weller Jimmy Allen was handy in his 150th game for the club, with 23 disposals and a goal.
In captain Will Horsfall’s 100th game for the club, Old Geelong exacted some revenge over Old Trinity after last year’s semi-final loss, holding the Ts to four goals after quarter time and completing a stirring comeback win.
The OGs have matched last year’s 4-2 start and are yet to lose a game at Como Park this year - but needed a quartertime rev-up from coach Nick Dixon after a goalless opening to the match. From the first minute of the second term, the response was evident to Dixon. The OGs cut a 26-point margin down to five points by half time and hit the front inside the first three minutes of the third.
A tight and tense final quarter would play out in fading light at Como Park. It took until the 17-minute mark for the first goal of the term, the Ts’ Jack Hindson prodding one through from the line, before Hugh Beasley at the 25-minute mark snapped through his fourth goal to put Old Trinity ahead.
In late moments that will live on forever at Como Park, Connor Dixon took a contested mark and cleaved the centremost uprights from a set shot at the 29-minute mark to put the OGs back in front, before the Ts’ Tom Ferrier just missed a rushed shot at goal at the other end a few minutes later.
The game had ticked well past 34 minutes when Mickey Nicholls hauled down a grab inside 50, to the delight of the blue-and-white at Como Park. He converted from directly in front, was duly mobbed by his teammates, the siren sounding before the ball returned to the middle to signal a 9.11 (65) to 8.9 (57) win.
“We have great respect for Old Geelong, you can see clearly they are going to be right in the mix for this year’s premiership in B grade as they have genuine depth and quality,” said Ts coach Donald McDonald. “After quarter time they adapted so much better to the conditions and won a game that was a very tough encounter. To our boys’ credit, we really persisted and were not that far away.”
With the Wellers losing at Elsternwick Park and the Ts falling to the OGs, Old Ivanhoe had the chance to snatch back top spot on the ladder, which the club held through Rounds Three and Four.
The Hoers made the best of the wet conditions at Chelsworth Park, increasing their lead at every break against Fitzroy to run out comfortable 49-point winners, 14.13 (97) to 7.6 (48). It was an Old Ivanhoe side looking to return to its strengths after falling away “not only last week, but over the last couple of weeks,” according to coach Gieschen.
Welcoming back Toby McLean from injury and busy forwardmidfielder Rohan McKenzie was integral to Gieschen’s success against a Fitzroy team that has improved its form, after starting 2025 with four losses.
107 disposals won between McLean (37), Patrick Naish (36 and two goals) and Billy Murphy (34 and three goals) stood out on the Premier Data statsheet, while McKenzie, returning from some time at the Northern Bullants, was supreme in the wet with 27 disposals and three goals. “I thought we came to play and had some really good periods, we just weren’t good enough for long enough,” said Fitzroy coach Travis Ronaldson.
Old Carey continued its seamless adaptation to Premier B football in the final game of the weekend, breaking away from the Hampton Rovers after quarter time and winning by 71 points at home.
The Panthers led by a point at the first break after both teams kicked three first quarter goals, but booted 11 goals to one after that, particularly dominant in a 56-2 second half to run out 14.17 (101) to 4.6 (30) winners.
It’s now three wins from four games for Luke Giles’ teamthat loss coming by just the one point at Daley Oval in Round Five - with a two-week road trip ahead with games against Williamstown CYMS and Fitzroy.
Bede Waters (32 disposals), Jack Alexander (26 disposals and two goals) and Lachy Godden (17 disposals and four goals) stood out for the Panthers, while former Kangaroo Will Walker kicked three goals in his second game of the year for Hampton.
The Rovers host the OMs this Saturday while the Panthers travel to the Fearon Reserve to take on Williamstown CYMS. Fitzroy hosts Old Trinity, Caulfield Grammarians host Old Camberwell, while all eyes will be drawn to Old Geelong and Old Ivanhoe at Como Park in a game that may shape the balance of power in the top four.

Stalemate steals the show as Xavs and Tigers go toe-to-toe
Round 6 of Premier B Women’s had something for everyone, with the competition bearing witness to the first draw of the season, a top of the table clash, and another nail-biting match decided by less than a goal.
In a gripping contest at Toorak Park, Old Xaverians and St Bedes/Mentone Tigers could not be separated, finishing on 7.4 (46) apiece.
With their vice-captain, Amy Benifer, going down before the first bounce, Old Xavs could have been forgiven for starting the game with a few qualms. However, the opposite proved to be true, as Xavs piled on four goals in a dominant first term to lead by 12 at the first break.
The Tigers, led by captain Maddi Wilson, refused to bow out, clawing their way back into the contest to trail by just one point at three-quarter time.
The final term was a tense arm-wrestle, with both sides trading goals and neither able to break the deadlock. Larissa Lewis slotted a major at the 12-minute mark to earn the Tigers the lead for the first time that day, before a behind to Amelie Menegola in the final minutes brought the two sides level, with neither side able to find a further score to steal the victory.
2024 Anytime Fitness Rising Star nominee, Anabelle Gangi, was instrumental for Old Xavs, finishing the day with two majors, while Olivia Steinfort starred for SBMT, registering her first goal since 2022.
Tigers Coach Meg Fisher noted her side’s need to start games better, while praising the team’s ability to find another gear as the game went on.
“Energy and talk on the field was good. After a couple of tough games, it was great to have repeat forward entries, and better ball movement down the ground,” said Fisher.
The Tigers will face another test next week when they host Westbourne at Mentone Reserve, while Old Xaverians will get a chance to rest with the bye.
Old Brighton have cemented their place atop the ladder by continuing their undefeated streak with a gritty win over Port Melbourne Chargers at JL Murphy Reserve, prevailing 6.6 (42) to 4.1 (25) in a match that lived up to its billing as a topof-the-table showdown.
In slippery conditions, both sides were locked at 1.1 (7) apiece after a tense first quarter. However, Old Brighton’s midfield dominance broke the game open in the second, with a flurry of goals in the second and third terms earning the Tonners a commanding 33-point lead at the final change.
Showing tenacity and a never-say-die attitude, the Chargers battled to get the game back on their terms during the final term, booting three goals in a late surge to bring the margin back to 17 points at the final siren.
Chargers coach Harriet Cooper commended the resilience shown by her side, “Even when the scoreboard wasn’t in our favour and the wet conditions made things tough, the players dug deep and fought hard. This shows a lot about their character and commitment.”
When asked if he could identify where the game was won, Old Brighton coach Andrew Grant said, “Both teams were evenly matched but we ended up able to win some important stoppages and contested ball which enabled us to get our running game going.”
“Another very even performance from the team but once again Bridgette Hagan was strong and fearless and the Tait sisters, Indi and Jas, were important.”
From the Chargers’ line-up, it was Maia Sublet who received the coach’s votes, for displaying great work ethic as she battled tirelessly in the ruck all day.
Over at Andrew Park Pavilion, Westbourne Grammarians edged out Old Melburnians, holding on in the final term to cinch a 6.3 (39) to 5.4 (34) victory in a match defined by momentum swings.
Both sides played high-quality football in the first half, with the Omlettes taking a slender one-goal lead into the main break, but it was Caitlyn Gashi who turned the tide in the third term, igniting a Westbourne surge with three goals in a four-goal blitz that left Old Melburnians scrambling to regain composure before the final change.
Spurred on by a passionate three-quarter time address from coach Nic Stephens, the Omlettes responded in the final term, kicking two goals to reduce the final deficit to just five points.
“I asked the girls at three quarter time to show me who we were as a team and whether we were the type of team that would go into our shell when things got tough, or whether we had the fortitude to dig deep and fight back,” said Stephens.
“We obviously didn’t end up with the result going in our favour, but I was still really proud that the girls gathered themselves back up and made it a much more competitive game.”
The result highlights the importance of staying engaged for four full quarters, which Stephens acknowledges as a key area of improvement for the Omlettes, along with their need to work on slowing opposition momentum when other teams get a roll on.
On the other hand, Westbourne coach Chris Grant was full of praise for his side’s four-quarter effort, in which every player was able to contribute and impact the game.
“We know we have to improve a lot to be able to match it with top teams such as Old Brighton and Port Melbourne Chargers, but the girls are continuing to work hard on all areas of their game to get there. There are positive signs we are on the right track at this early stage of the season.”
In terms of individual performances, Grant praised the work of Sam Moodie, who stepped up as ruck in her third game of the season, filling the shoes of captain Morganne Gaston.
For the Omlettes, debutant Rosie Rush played a selfless game, leading the way in 1-percenters, while first-year player Pia Jurcic provided a spark when her team needed it, playing her best game of the season.
The woes continued for MUWFC, who went down to Marcellin by 53 points. The Sheagles came out firing, scoring 4.3 (27) to 0 in the first term to set themselves up with a handy lead.
While play was more even through the remainder of the game than the scoreboard would suggest, the Mugars found themselves unable to convert their opportunities into scoreboard pressure.
Coach Michael Goldsmith of Melbourne Uni was pleased by the improvements his team showed, including much stronger one-on-one contests and stoppages, however, he acknowledged the work they still need to put in on forward craft and line connection.
Despite the loss, Melbourne University had many players perform well, with Jo Collins, Bridget Hudson and Zoe Kertesz all starring.
For Marcellin, Zoe Glascott led the forward line once again with three majors, while Billie Harvey and Lani Pane continued their hot streaks of form.
The Old Yarra Cobras sat out on the weekend with the Bye and will be recharged and rearing to go come Round 7 when they come up against the ladder-leaders in Old Brighton. Old Melburnians are set to host Marcellin at Elsternwick Park, whilst St Bedes/Mentone Tigers face off against Westbourne Grammarians. On Sunday at Melbourne University Oval, MUWFC will welcome the Port Melbourne Chargers for the first time, while Old Xaverians will have the week off with the Bye.

A maiden victory for Martyn’s Gryphons headlines a wet weekend in Prem C Men’s
A wet, wintry weekend in suburban football ensured forgettable fixtures aplenty in Premier C Men’s, but a first win for Guy Martyn’s Glen Eira/Old McKinnon side did its best to warm the cockles. A tough draw saw the Gryphons face Beaumaris, Parkdale Vultures, PEGS and St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers in a four-week stretch – teams whose current combined record in the division is 18-6 – before a trip to Marcellin this past weekend.
Once there, in keeping with the story of their season, Martyn’s charges had to do it the hard way. The Gryphons trailed by 22 points early in the second quarter, before two goals of their own, and some Marcellin miscues in front of the sticks, saw the margin reduced to an even three goals at the main break. 4.2 to 0.4 in the third quarter saw Glen Eira head into the final change ahead for the first time this season. They surrendered this lead ten minutes into a tense final stanza, but Sean Bass kicked his fifth goal seven minutes later to regain the advantage, and no further goals were to be scored.
The 9.5 (59) to 7.11 (53) victory sees the Gryphons climb out of last position on the ladder, in what has been a torrid reintroduction to division for the credentialed Martyn, who had this to say, post-match:
“I’ve been really impressed with the boys’ spirits, energy and commitment throughout the year, so it was pleasing for them to get a win as I don’t think sitting 0-6 would be fair.”
Attention now turns to a trip to Albert Park, where an undefeated AJAX side awaits.
In a game coach Lachlan Buszard repeatedly labelled ‘ugly’, the Jackas triumphed over Parkside, in Alphington. “We’re happy to bank the four points and move on,” Buszard said.
“It was scrappy, surge football, with lots of turnovers, but you expect that given it’s both teams’ first crack at wet weather footy this season,” he continued.
Inaccuracy was a feature of the contest, with the final score 7.13 (55) to 2.10 (22). Devils’ youngster Matt Holden drew Buszard’s praise; further reward for the strong season the flashy utility is building.
Jackas weapon and co-captain Kane Nissenbaum made his triumphant return and in fine fashion, earning his way into Buszard’s best, while Justin Vogel earned a nomination for the third straight week. Against Parkside, AJAX played
its 38th player for the season and have now blooded eight debutants. This testing of their depth makes the undefeated start Buszard is enjoying, all the more impressive.
For Parkside, it’s a third consecutive loss, after starting the season 2-1. Coach Rick Frost will spend the week searching for answers, ahead of another home game this weekend, against a St Bedes/Mentone Tigers outfit that is riding a four-game heater.
The most recent of these victories was a 9.12 (66) to 8.8 (56) win over PEGS. Given the close nature of the contest, Bombers coach Rob Kerr has been left ruing a burst that went against his side in the first half.
“The difference really boiled down to a 10-minute period in the second quarter where the Tigers mids were able to get on the outside and rush forward from stoppages. This run of 3 goals proved too much to pull back, although my boys managed to get it (the margin) back to two points, 23 minutes into the last,” he said.
Kerr praised backman Oscar Bales and onballer Blake Roach for their contributions to the losing effort, while highlighting a need to ‘get more value’ from forward entries as the season progresses.
After a disappointing performance against Parkdale Vultures in Round 3, the Beaumaris Sharks have gone on a rampage, winning their last three matches by an average margin of 11 goals, and only conceding 114 across those matches.
“We have a rich history of being competitive, and we didn’t deliver on that against Parkdale. Our last three weeks have been about rectifying that,” said coach Josh Bourke.
“When in good health, we know we have a talented list, but talent doesn’t mean much without effort or attitude,” Bourke added, alluding to the wealth of current and former VFL-listed players at his disposal.
This talent fired the Sharks to a 14.17 (101) to 6.4 (40) victory over Mazenod on Saturday. Frankston-listed midfielder/forward Riley Mihailovic scored two majors, while Riley Virtue and Jai Florent combined for three goals; a pleasing return for the rotational approach Bourke is taking to his midfield.
Opposite number Peter Banfield applauded his team’s endeavour, while pointing out where their growth will come from.
“We tried hard, had a crack, but Beaumaris were too skilled, too good on the outside. We need to continue to work hard on our skills and ball execution. (I was) really happy with Josh Boyle and Lachlan Murdock,” Banfield offered.
Sitting undefeated in second and closing the percentage gap on AJAX with every passing round, is Parkdale Vultures
Their 15.10 (100) to 4.5 (29) victory over Prahran was dubbed a ‘workman-like effort’ by coach Owen Lalor, who was well pleased by his side’s ability to restrict Prahran to just nine scoring shots. The Vultures’ league-best scoring prowess has been well-documented of late, and Lalor went out of his way to praise his side’s defence, post-game.
“We have beautiful, natural half-back flankers. (Cooper) Balic and (Nathan) Sullivan intercept and rebound well, they have an ability to see things differently, they instinctively change angles – they played with a real flair, especially considering the conditions,” he said.
“Our mids were terrific in the contest. We still won clearance without Ollie Green and Jack Sullivan, who would usually account for about 60 possessions between them.”
Lalor is excited by this week’s challenge, a trip to Mazenod, where his side has a 1-2 record in the last three seasons and praised Peter Banfield’s stoppage and clearance coaching as ‘excellent’.
Craige Milward named a shorter Prahran side than usual on the weekend, expecting more rain than would come, and, out of necessity. Matt Clifford is away, Shaun Chapman has been battling a hip complaint, and ruckman Rory Brodie is yet to feature this season, although a return feels imminent. Billy Chapman has been strong in the ruck in Brodie’s absence, meaning the three-time Basil Cleary medallist could play forward in his return, to build up match fitness.
Milward insists his team feel closer to a maiden victory every week and is confident of doing real damage in the back half of the year, when troops return.
In Round 7, Mazenod welcome Parkdale Vultures, Parkside host St Bedes/Mentone Tigers and Glen Eira/Old McKinnon will visit AJAX. PEGS welcome Beaumaris to Windy Hill, and Marcellin will lock horns with Prahran at Toorak Park.

Ormond Senior Women’s team coach, Oscar Persson said:
“Hannah is one of the most well-rounded players I’ve had the pleasure to coach. Her focus on the defensive side of the game, along with her drive to improve both herself and those around her, is what makes her such a great person and player.
The balance Hannah has achieved between her studies, friendships and leadership role with Ormond’s women’s team has had a truly positive impact on our club.”
Antonio Giampa (De La Salle)
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
The VAFA congratulates Antonio Giampa from De La Salle Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 6 Anytime Fitness Men’s Rising Star. Antonio started the season in the U19’s and has quickly made his mark in the Senior side.
What the club said:
Antonio has fitted in seamlessly into our football club since joining us from Ashwood U16’s.
Impressing in his early games in our U19’s, he was duly rewarded with his senior debut in Round 4 and has put in really strong performance in all senior outings.
As a 17-year-old, he has a body built for senior footy. He is a powerful and extremely skilful young man. The way he plays is fearless and we encourage him to take the game on and play to his strengths.
Antonio has made an impressive start to his De La career, and we look forward to continue watching his attacking flair off half back and his damaging ball use.

Two thrillers headline blockbuster Round 6 action
Two games decided by less than a kick have captivated audiences across the latest weekend of Holmesglen Under 19 Premier action, as a buffer between the top three sides and the rest of the competition begins to emerge.
Old Brighton have triumphed in an away victory over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, after a destructive nine-goal final term ended the Tigers’ hopes of an upset victory. The Tonners, who headed into the game undefeated, were stunned by a hard-working SBMT outfit, who were not letting their ladder position define their effort in the cold, drizzly conditions.
SBMT took a minor two-point lead at quarter time, albeit due to some help from Old Brighton’s goalkicking inaccuracy but continued to hold their own up until the halftime break. The Tonners had kicked 17 scoring shots (5.12) to 10 (5.5) but only held a slim seven-point advantage over the home side.
Old Brighton began to click into gear in the second half, finding form that demonstrated why they are the reigning premiers. The Tonners scored seven of the first eight scores in the third term to extend the margin out to 23 by three-quarter-time, before SBMT’s defence began to fall.
The Tonners would kick nine final quarter goals, including a patch of play that saw three consecutive goals to Tommy Keyte, turning the game from a competitive contest to a 65-point mauling. The win keeps Old Brighton undefeated in 2025, while St Bedes/Mentone drop to 2-4 for the season. Keyte (five goals) and Andrew Langworthy (four) were Old Brighton’s best, while SBMT’s Rhett Fernando was commendable.
A controlled effort from start to finish has seen St Kevin’s claim its fifth win of 2025 against De La Salle. In the morning conditions the game began fairly scrappy, with De La holding a slim advantage at quarter-time, 1.2 (8) to 1.1 (7). SKOB found their groove in the second term though, holding De La Salle goalless while kicking four more themselves, creating a handy buffer at the main break.
Their control on the contest remained in the second half, limiting De La to just another 20 points for the game while St Kevin’s raced towards the triple-figure mark. SKOB fell short of the ton by eight points but secured a landslide
victory by the final siren, claiming a 63-point win. St Kevin’s’ Lucas May and Benjamin Palmer were impressive with four and three goals respectively, while Joshua Murray, Hugo Sheedy and Pat Russell were among De La Salle’s best.
Old Scotch have once again delivered a stirring final quarter comeback to cause heartbreak for the Uni Blues, defeating University by two points in eerily similar fashion to their encounter earlier this year.
The game was neck-and-neck for the first half, with the Uni Blues heading into the main break with just an eight-point lead. The Blues extended their lead to 15 by three-quarter-time, coincidentally the exact same lead they had against the Cardinals just three weeks ago before they succumbed to a nine-point defeat.
In the wet conditions the final quarter was more contested than the previous match, with the low-scoring affair seeing both sides barely squeeze past the 50-point mark on the scoreboard. In the end, Old Scotch made the most of their chances late to pull through for a classic two-point win, 51-53.
Uni Blues coach Steve Boakes said Old Scotch’s effectiveness in the weather was the difference by the final siren. “In wet conditions Old Scotch were a bit more efficient with their ball use,” Boakes said. “We need to be better for longer but again proved we are not far away from a quality outfit… Our backs led by (Lachlan) Gilligan, (William) Francis, and (Sam) Lindsay did well to contain Scotch’s quality small forwards for most of the match but in the end their ability to hit the scoreboard with accuracy was the difference.”
Two goals to Tom Farrer and Tommy Meggitt see the two rewarded as best on ground for the Cardinals.
In another cracking thriller, Caulfield Grammarians have upset Old Xaverians to level the playing field in the Under 19 Premier competition, with their three-point win placing all bottom-four teams in a heated relegation race, as all four sit with a 2-4 record.

The game was once again impacted by the wet weather forecast, making it yet another low scoring clash. Old Xavs began kicking ineffectively, scoring 0.4 in the first term, however Caulfield only managed one shot on goal to sneak a two-point lead at quarter-time. The scoring rate improved in the second term, with both sides combining for seven goals and only two behinds. Xavs scored an extra goal in the period, reversing the Fields’ quarter-time advantage in their favour.
Both sides scrapped in the third term to keep the margin within one straight kick, but the Xavs seemingly found a way halfway through the last, leading by a game high 14 points. Caulfield Grammarians coach Cooper Rule said it was purely the players’ hunger and desperation at the contest to come back and steal victory.
“With less than half a quarter to play and down 14 points on their home deck in wet conditions, to claw back and come away with the win was a real credit to the way this group fights and scraps for one another,” Rule said. “We were able to win the territory and stoppage battle in particular. A pretty special win highlighted by a massive final term from Eddie Gibb and Jude Fountain, supported by an outstanding all round team effort.”
Fountain kicked four of Caulfield’s eight, while Gibb was able to snag a major himself too. Ted Hansen was Old Xaverians’ best, while three goals by Gerard Forrest was the most of any red and black player.
In Round 7, De La Salle take on Old Brighton, while ladderleaders Old Scotch host bottom-of-the-table Caulfield, although following Round 6’s upset win its clear it won’t be a gimme for the Cardinals. Old Xaverians will look to rebound against St Kevin’s, while Uni Blues will look to improve their fourth-place buffer against St Bedes/Mentone, who are one win shy from replacing the Blues inside the finals position.

Rain, hail or shine, Division 1 continues to deliver
Wet weather footy hit the competition in Round 6, proving to be a real challenge to some of Division 1’s strongest performing sides, whilst others thrived in the cold and wet. These conditions often bring about low-scoring, uninteresting matches, but that certainly wasn’t the case with an average score of 71 across the division.
Two of the division’s best performing sides to date, Ormond and the Preston Bullants, locked horns at E.E. Gunn Reserve which saw Ormond come away 24-point winners.
When these two sides met in 2024, Ormond won both encounters, the first by 8 points and the second by 66 points, so the Bullants had a point to prove to correct that record.
The first half was incredibly close as both sides kept each other accountable on the scoreboard. Ormond let a few opportunities slip inside 50 with more behinds than Preston, but nonetheless held a narrow 6-point lead at the main break.
It was in the third quarter where Ormond took control and dictated the game on their terms in a dominant six goals to two display; and whilst Preston showed more promise in the later stages of the final term, they left their run too late and could not overcome Ormond who claimed their sixth consecutive win to remain undefeated in 2025.
After going down close last week, UHS-VU found themselves back on the winners list with a 10-point victory over Elsternwick
Elsternwick, yet to win a game since joining Division 1, started on the right foot with the opening goal of this game to Daniel Marchese, and some back and forth between both teams saw UHS-VU leading by a slim margin of 5-points at quarter time. The second quarter saw Elsternwick find more luck getting the footy through the big sticks, as UHS-VU will be ruing missed opportunities with inaccuracy, which resulted in their lead diminishing to just 2-points at half-time.
As the temperature continued to drop throughout the afternoon, a lower scoring third quarter saw just three majors recorded - two of those going to UHS-VU which afforded them saw breathing space heading into the final term.
A close and tense final quarter saw Elsternwick score the first goal to reduce their deficit to two-points, followed by a UHS goal, another Elsternwick goal, but a final UHS-VU goal to Lachlan Hull sealed the home side victory which puts them 7th on the ladder at the end of this round.
Kew survived a scare from a rampaging Therry Penola, in a 5-point victory at Fawkner Reserve.
On paper, Kew looked like the obvious team to back in this match but to Therry Penola’s credit, they gave them a real challenge and sent the rest of the competition a message that they can contend with the top sides, as the wet and cool conditions kept them in the contest.
Kew started the match on top, converting opportunities inside 50 as Therry Penola’s inaccuracy let them down to give Kew a 9-point lead. Therry Penola’s fortunes changed in the second quarter as their forwards stood up for them and edged them ahead on the scoreboard by half-time.
In these conditions, a clear ‘scoring end’ emerged, as by the end of the third quarter eight of the eleven goals had been kicked at one end. This meant Kew had the upper hand in the third quarter to lead by a narrow 3 points at three-quarter time.
To Kew’s credit, they changed this trend in the final quarter which saw both sides kick four goals, and a couple of additional behinds to Kew saw the Bears win this game by 5-points.
Whilst Therry Penola will have been disappointed not to claim the four points, there are many positives for them to take out of this game, with two of their next three games very winnable.
If onlookers thought the weather in Melbourne was bleak, try heading down to Harry MacDonald Oval in Mount Eliza where it felt many degrees cooler as competition heavyweight Old Peninsula defeated Oakleigh by 48 points.
Both sides were well matched and kept up with each other in the first quarter with Old Peninsula’s accuracy giving them a narrow 3-point buffer at quarter-time. The Pirates built up momentum in the second quarter with three goals
to Oakleigh’s one, as Oakleigh were once again let down by inaccuracy in a quarter where they kicked five behinds.
Old Peninsula’s 13-point lead at half-time grew to 24-points at three-quarter-time as the Pirates continued to find the big sticks. Oakleigh couldn’t keep up and the Pirates ran away with it in the fourth quarter to win comfortably.
This match has once again proven that Old Peninsula are a tough proposition at home. With an average winning margin of 51 points in home matches this season, the Pirates know how to play their ground well, and will be a road trip that oppositions fear.
Brunswick recorded their second win on the trot and their third win of 2025 in a 21-point victory over the Monash Blues
The first term saw most opportunities come Brunswick’s way to see them bank an 8-point lead, but with a scoreline of 1.9 (15) they could’ve been much further ahead. Brunswick began to rectify that in the second quarter as both sides managed three goals to see Brunswick lead by just 7-points at half-time.
Monash kicked the opening goal of the third quarter, so it looked like a real contest was about to emerge, but Brunswick fired back with three consecutive goals to build their lead up to 17 points at three-quarter time. Both sides managed two goals each in the final term but a few additional behinds going the way of Brunswick gave them more breathing room as they held onto the final siren to claim victory.
Round 7 sees the two struggling sides, Elsternwick and the Monash Blues, go head-to-head in a game that will give one of these sides a much needed first win of 2025.
Fifth-placed Oakleigh will come up against the undefeated Ormond, with both sides well positioned in the forward line to kick plenty of goals.
Other games in Round 7 involve Therry Penola hosting UHSVU, Old Peninsula travelling up the freeway to meet the Preston Bullants, and Brunswick hosting a top two side in Kew.

Gryphons show they are the real deal in game of the year
Round 6 of the competition saw the match of the year, as Glen Eira/Old McKinnon defeated the Monash Blues by six points in a low scoring affair, demonstrating just how big of a threat they are to the competition. It was just the Blues first loss of the season, which alas sees them slide from first to third on the ladder, now below both the Gryphs and Oakleigh, further emphasising how tight the competition is. Glen Eira remains undefeated on top of the table.
It was expected to be a thriller on paper, and both teams delivered. Cecilia McIntosh was best on ground with two goals, whilst captain Gemma Strangio led from the front for the Gryphons. Jacqui Greer had two goals for the Blues, whilst Tiarna Byrnes and Tiarna Jericho were their best.
Next up, Glen Eira will host Hampton whilst the Blues will host Oakleigh in the battle for second on the ladder. If the Gryphs’ are defeated by the Rovers, it leaves the race for first wide open.
The Hampton Rovers were triumphant with profound victory over Therry Penola, defeating the Lions by 56 points to jump into fourth position. It was a fairly evenly matched first half, with the Rovers taking a four-goal lead into the main break. However, a 43 to 9 point second half helped secure the win.
Hollie Brodribb continued her impressive run of form, kicking a huge five goals and was named in the best players for a sixth consecutive week. Madeline Pearson and Casey Politarhis were also impressive. For the Lions, Eliza German was named best on and in the best for a third consecutive week, whilst Abbey Duggan kicked two goals to take her tally to 14 for the season.
Therry Penola will play Richmond Central on Saturday morning, whilst the Rovers will come up against the rampaging Gryphons.
Parkdale Vultures looked much improved as they settle into the Div 1 competition, however, were not able to get the job done over the mighty Power House at Ross Gregory; with a final margin of 18 points. In a low scoring affair, the Vultures were held scoreless for the entire first half, whilst Power House were wayward in front of goals, kicking 1.4 in the first half. A more consistent run of scoring was on display in the third quarter, with Parkdale bringing the margin back to four points.
The Vultures failed to capitalise on the momentum, remaining scoreless once again in the fourth quarter whilst Power House kicked 2.2.
Joanne Down had two goals for Power House, whilst Sinead and Emma Doorley were both strong performers. For the Vultures, Chloe Phillips and Ellie Wilson were both strong whilst vice-captain Tayla Ingram kicked a goal.
The Vultures will travel to play Whitefriars on Saturday morning, whilst Power House will host Old Haileybury. Whitefriars secured their second win of the season, defeating Richmond Central by 10 points. Richmond was held to just one behind for the first half, with Whitefriars kicked 5.2. The Snakes staged a comeback in the second half, with four goals to Whitefriars two behinds. It was a strong performance from both sides, but it was Whitefriars first half that saw them able to hold on and ultimately run out victorious.
Co-captains Clare Fernandes and Caitlin Ryan were impressive in front of goal, whilst Bella Giannangelo was best on. For Richmond, Rionach Nealon, Mia HydeSmith and Georgie Hobill were impressive.

Richmond will host Therry Penola next week as they search for their second win of the season, whilst Whitefriars will look to continue their form when they host the Vultures.
Oakleigh were too strong for Old Haileybury, defeating them by 29 points to move up to second on the ladder. Oakleigh were wayward in front of goal in the first half, kicking 2.9 to Haileybury’s 1.2 to keep the contest wide open. However, they corrected their inaccuracies in the second half, kicking three goals to Haileybury’s two behinds.
Kaitlyn Sidopolous kicked two goals for the second week in a row, making it her fourth game of multiple goals. Sienna Bernardo and captain Ruby Ford were impressive once again. Emily Bannon, Gypsy Folwell and Alessia Lettieri were strong for Haileybury.
Next up, Old Haileybury will come up against Power House on Saturday morning. Oakleigh will travel to Frearson Oval to play the Monash Blues, in a game that could shake up the top order.

Friars taste defeat for the first time in 2025
Round 6 of the Division 2 Men’s competition saw Old Yarra Cobras and St Mary’s Salesian deliver strong performances to maintain the top two spots on the ladder, while South Melbourne registered their second win of the season.
South Melbourne backed up last week’s big win over Hawthorn with a tougher 13-point win over Canterbury at the Canterbury Sportsground. The 54 points scored by the Bloods was the lowest by any winning side to this stage of the season.
The low-scoring affair saw the lead change after every quarter, with South Melbourne kicking three goals to one in the final quarter to see them claim the four points.
Bloods coach Nick Abbott described the win as another step in the right direction, and a good learning experience for the playing group in how to win a game where things didn’t always go their way.
“[There’s] still plenty of improvement to come, and we’re looking ahead to some more tough battles over the next couple of weeks to keep our season alive,” he said, with his side now sitting seventh on the ladder.
Old Yarra Cobras continued their unbeaten start to the season, grinding out an 11-point victory against West Brunswick at Ransford Oval.
The Cobras, who were already missing roughly 10 players from their first-choice side, lost Will Fleming to a calf injury in the warmup and Callum Copeland to concussion following on off-the-ball hit in the third quarter.
Old Yarra coach Nathan Monaco was stoked with how his side – especially some of the younger players –stepped up to keep their winning streak alive.
“Joel Glassborow got a little bit of a lesson form Billy Irving (five goals), but he was very good across half back, Adam Papatheodorou came in for his first game in a while with a goal and some really good pressure, and Yaya Bushnaq had plenty of run and carry; he’s just relentless,” said Monaco.
St John’s turned a 19-point deficit into a 17-point victory in in their clash with Hawthorn, squaring their win-loss record for the first time this season. The Hawks kicked six goals to two in the first half, with Ethan McLaren and Jack Kenny bagging two each.
JOC’s coach Tim Edwards said it was the worst first half he had seen his side play, leaving him wanting to tear his hair out and deliver an almighty spray during the main break.
But St John’s flipped the script with a six goal to two third quarter to lead by one straight kick going into the final term, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
Edwards highlighted the efforts of makeshift ruckman Aydan Unger, who competed well despite having only a handful of senior games to his name.
“Ayden’s never played ruck before, and the Hawthorn ruckman was about two feet taller than him, but he was one of the reasons we got back into the game in that third quarter,” he said.
MHSOB notched up their third home win over the season, outclassing Aquinas by 74 points.
The Bloods were competitive early, trailing by four points at the first break, before the Unicorns took jumped out to a 31-point lead at the half and a 48-point lead at three quarter time.
The 74-point victory was MHSOB’s largest win of the season, surpassing the 41-point win over Canterbury in Round 2. Will Hellier bagged five goals for the Unicorns, while James Lees and Matthew Pereira also made valuable contributions with four each.
St Mary’s Salesian handed Whitefriars their first loss of the season, controlling the match after half time to finish with a 78-point victory.
Saints coach Clay Tait felt their opponents adjusted to the wet conditions more quickly when the rain came in during the second quarter, was happy with how his side kept a level head and stuck to their structures.

“We had good structure both defensively and offensively, so when it did slide forward, we were set up for it. We were quite composed under pressure, which was really good,” he said.
Jacob McElroy proved an important target up forward in his first game since Round 3, finishing the day with five goals.
“Having him back in the side makes a massive difference, he’s a forward who knows where to get and hits the scoreboard every week,” Tait said.
Whitefriars coach Lucas Matthews said his team struggled to match St Mary’s physicality around the contest, which meant they were unable to slow the opposition down with repeat stoppages.
Round 7 action sees Whitefriars play Hawthorn; with both sides looking to bounce back this is shaping up to be a good contest. Meanwhile the Old Yarra Cobras welcome MHSOB to Koonung Reserve. Elsewhere, second-placed St Mary’s Salesian square off against fourth-placed West Brunswick at Ferndale Park, South Melbourne are aiming to make it three wins in a row against St John’s, and Aquinas will be looking for their first win of the season when they host Canterbury.

Aquinas notch first win of 2025 in style
Aquinas was the story of Round 6, securing their first four points of season 2025 away at Gillon Oval against Brunswick
Aquinas’s secretary, Taylor Leslie, was full of praise for her side’s determination to grind out a hard-fought win. Leslie admitted that the matchup against Brunswick was always going to be a tough task.
“Whenever we play Brunswick, it always ends up being a bit of an arm wrestle, with both teams making it a contested game, going hard at the footy,” Leslie explained.
The Edwards girls were clinical for the away side, with all their efforts instrumental in obtaining the club’s first win. Leslie was also delighted with new recruit Hannah Jones, who continued her good run of form with an inspiring performance.
The club will be looking to make it two wins on the trot next week, as they begin their preparations to host a mental health awareness match. Aquinas is accepting donations for the round, with a main attraction on the day being a huge slide the club has obtained, giving donors a chance to nominate someone to go down it.
Box Hill North made it four wins on the bounce, downing Parkside by ten points. The Devils jumped Box Hill North early, kicking three straight goals in the first quarter and taking an early lead.
However, Box Hill North hung in there and eventually got it done following a barnstorming finish.
Head Coach Steve Jackson was full of compliments for Parkside, stating that he thought they were a talented and well-coached outfit. Jackson was particularly pleased with his side’s gritty final term, booting two goals in the final two minutes to snatch victory.
Box Hill North are beginning to establish themselves as genuine contenders in season 2025, sitting second on the ladder with only one loss.
La Trobe University returned to winning ways, defeating Hawthorn in convincing fashion. Coach Samantha Greene was ecstatic with the performance, labelling it a “comprehensive team win.” Green was particularly pleased with how her side dealt with dangerous Hawks competitor Emogen Johnson, curbing her ability to get her side moving up forward.
A special occasion for La Trobe captain Jessica Lowry, who played her 50th game. Greene acknowledged that her side had a little extra motivation for the match, rapt that they could get a win for their captain. A tough day at the office for the Hawks, who were unable to register a single point until the third term.
After their dream start to life in Division 2 last week, the Hawks will be looking to forget this weekend’s result, looking towards their round 7 clash with league leaders De La Salle.
MCC recorded the biggest win in Round 6, demolishing Coburg by 53 points. Only having thirteen players on the day, Coburg was unable to compete with MCC but was gallant in defeat.
MCC coach Oliver Platt was pleased with his side’s response following a string of tough defeats. “We moved the ball really well and were able to stay connected as a team across the ground,” Platt exclaimed.
Anna Harris returned from injury in style, booting four goals and imposing herself down forward for MCC. On top of this, it was a fantastic achievement for Athena Asmanis, who celebrated her 50th game by kicking a goal and putting in a valiant performance.
MCC will need to continue their fast and slick game style in order to beat in-form Old Carey in round 7.
A bi-product of regrading and refixturing saw De La Salle, Old Carey and UHS-VU all sit out this week with a Bye. With a week off to reset, the trio will no doubt be tough opponents to come up against heading into Round 7.

As another round draws to a close, the table is beginning to shape up, with teams establishing their positions and making statements as the season progresses. Despite their bye on the weekend, De La is still atop the ladder, undefeated and hungry for more victories.
With a pep in their step after getting their first win on the board, Aquinas will be hungry for more when they come up against La Trobe University this weekend. UHS-VU will host Box Hill North at Brens Oval, while Old Carey will travel to come up against MCC. In the afternoon time slot, Hawthorn is back at Rathmines Road Reserve as they face off against the ladder leaders in De La Salle. Parkside will host Brunswick and Coburg will sit out this round with the Bye.

Round 6 would provide much of the same within the Men’s Division 3 Competition.
Despite the rain last Saturday, it did not prevent some teams from scoring. Four teams would score above 100 points, including North Brunswick, scoring 218 points, which made for some big victories.
Box Hill North had a resounding 81-point victory against Swinburne University as the Demons further ensconced themselves as the biggest improvers in the division.
The Demons broke out to a 30-point lead in the first quarter but struggled to kick on in the second, with the weather conditions playing a part. This was despite coach Beau Parthenides thinking that the game was over by quarter time.
But in the second half, the Demons managed to adapt to the conditions, and it showed on the scoreboard.
For Swinburne, it was another result that showed their yo-yoing nature, which coach Johnny Andrinopoulos putting this down to the availability of his players.
But he is sure that when the Razorbacks have their best 22 players out on the field, they can match it with any team in the league.
Richmond Central returned to winning ways as they defeated Chadstone by 126 points.
It was a confident victory for the Snakes after losing their last two matches. The win would also be the second biggest since Michael Motta started coaching the side in 2024. And although he was happy with the win, the focus for Motta and the Snakes remains on trying to be more competitive against the top four sides.
For Chadstone, yet again, it was another fadeout after quarter time, with the margin reflective of that matter. Coach Ian Ledder noted that this would be something they would address for next week’s match.
North Brunswick delivered a thunderous 217-point victory over Eley Park as they maintain 3rd place on the ladder. This result would be one for the record books. This victory is now the second biggest in the Bulls’ history and was the lowest score they have ever conceded in a match, showing how dominant a result this was.
Adding to that, it was also the biggest winning margin by any team this season in the division.
Pleased with the result, coach Domenic Fontana also noted how unselfish his players were during the game. The Bulls managed to have 15 different players scoring goals, emphasising how much of a team performance this result was.
While Eley Park could only sit back and watch as they suffered their worst defeat since Round 7, 2024, they should prove to be a more competitive outfit in next week’s clash against Chadstone.
Power House survived a close scare from Albert Park to remain on top of the ladder as they won by four points.
The game would ebb and flow between the sides with the Falcons having an 11-point lead at quarter time, Power House having a nine-point lead at half time, and both sides tied at 58 points apiece at three-quarter time.
However, the experience of Power House would prove too much, with goals from Kieran Wotherspoon and Scott Shier in the fourth quarter being the difference.
For a team that has won by an average margin of 116.4 points coming into this match, being able to win a close one demonstrates Power House multitudes as a side and further highlights their case for premiership favouritism.
While Albert Park once again just falls short against quality opposition, it should only further solidify their belief that they are better than their 2-4 record suggests.
They are the only side to have kept both undefeated sides to a single-digit margin with a missed shot on goal after the siren against Wattle Park and kicking 1.2 in the final stages of the fourth quarter against Power House being the only things that stood in the way of a potential 4-2 record.
This was noted by player-coach Jack Amies, believing this result shows that the Falcons are “tracking in the right direction”.
Wattle Park continued their dominance over the Division 3 competition with a comfortable 86-point win against La Trobe University

GOALS: Swinburne University: N. ferguson 2, R. Boyd 1, J. Priestly 1
The Trobers would go toe to toe with the Animals for at least the majority of the first quarter. But similar to the Animals’ match last week against Chadstone, Wattle Park was able to flick the switch in the second and would control the game from there on out.
Coach Glenn Hopkins was most pleased with his side’s pressure and ability to defend the ground as they maintained their undefeated record. Captain Harry Davis would be best on ground for Wattle Park, managing to boot seven goals.
For La Trobe, it was another big defeat against a top four side, having lost by 74 points to Richmond Central back in Round 3. Despite the result, Connor McCredden and Jonty Randall would again play a starring role. Both are among only four players in the competition to have achieved five best on grounds.
For Round 7, all five matchups provide plenty of intrigue. The undefeated Wattle Park and Power House will face off in the most anticipated match of the competition. The winner of that game will cement their spot as premiership favourites and gain an even healthier advantage on the ladder over the rest of the competition.
On the other side of the spectrum, but equally as exciting, will be the battle between Chadstone and Eley Park. Both teams will have the incentive of getting their first win for 2025, which should only fuel their motivations. Swinburne goes up against Richmond Central as they hope to show that they can be competitive against the top four sides.
Albert Park plays Box Hill North at Bill Woodfull Oval. Having both set their expectations this season to play finals, victory proves crucial for either side to turn that into a reality. And North Brunswick will look to continue their dominant form while La Trobe look to steer clear of three losses in a row when they face off at Allard Park.

The Bulls charge in the wet
Round 6 of the Division 3 Women’s competition saw Ormond deliver a four-quarter performance to maintain top spot, Albert Park maintaining their spot in the top five by percentage and North Brunswick keeping their hopes alive with the pack.
Ormond continued their unbeaten start to the season in season 2025, with a 48-point victory over Wattle Park at home, 7.8 (50) to 0.2 (2). It was the first taste of wet weather conditions out at E.E Gunn Reserve in the early time slot, where the Monders capitalised on their home ground advantage.
Ormond’s defensive pressure was a factor early, keeping Wattle Park goalless for the first half, whilst Ormond kicked four to set up the victory.
Indiana Harrison was the leading scorer for Ormond, kicking two goals. Bo Fox, Michaela Di Leece, Teagan Engelander, Charlotte Fisher and Hannah Foran all registered one goal each.
The Animals’ skipper, Ebony Ratcliffe led the charge for her side on a tough outing, with support from the likes of Elli Haylock, Charlotte Norton, and Morgan Biggar.
Albert Park notched their third home win of the season, defeating Elsternwick by 50 points, 7.10 (52) to 0.2 (2). In a very similar scoreline to the game prior the Falcons held strong defensively whilst being able to pile on 7 majors with a hand ten behinds to seal the deal over the Wickers.
The Falcons hit the scoreboard early with two of their goals coming in the first quarter. A monumental second half saw them add on another 5, with two off the boot of Caroline Ma.
Ashlea Wilson also slotted two goals each for the Falcons, while Ariel Paterson, Claire McGrath and Sarah Grace all finished with one. Eilish Horsfall and Cliodhna Doherty were influential for Elsternwick.
The match between Preston Bullants and St Mary’s Salesian resulted in a forfeit, with St Mary’s taking the points.
The next match of the round was anyone’s game against two fairly evenly matched teams. North Brunswick hungry for their second win, pulled out all the stops and got the job done with a resounding victory over South Melbourne Districts in the wet, charging home 3.11 (29) to 0.1. (1).
North Brunswick kicked two goals in the first half, with two of those coming off the boot of Madeleine Bentley. Denver Adams and Sophie Ulcoq were also influential for the victors, whilst Hannah Singleton and Lily McRostie led the charge for the Districts.
In a come from behind victory to secure the four points, Mazenod keep themselves in touch of the top four as one of three sides currently sitting on 5-1 wins/losses.
Old Camberwell got the early jump with the sole major for the opening term on their home turf. But it was Mazenod who came out of the quarter time huddle firing, registering all 9 scores from that point onwards to charge home by 8 points.
To the Wellers credit, their defence held firm, minimising the opposition’s ability to extend the margin and created a real contest between the arcs.
Whilst Old Camberwell had the moment in the first half, Mazenod found a way in the wet weather conditions, kicking two behinds to seal the victory.

Wet, wild and wooly – Round 6 action in the books
Caufield Grammarians blitzed Canterbury by 93 points on a frosty Saturday morning at Glen Huntly Park. Exceptional service from the midfielders namely Cait Adams, captain Laura Carty and Claire Ryan ensured the Caufield forward line plenty of opportunities to fill their boots after a narrow defeat to Fitzroy last week. A 12-scoring shot opening term by Caufield was symptomatic of the possession differential between the two sides, gifting Caufield a 27-point buffer at the first break.
Despite the scoreline, Caufield coach Lachlan Worthy urged his team to keep the foot on the accelerator against a “tenacious Canterbury team.” Canterbury broke their score drought in the second quarter with their first of two majors for the day.
The exuberance of youth was evident in Caufield’s ability to maintain forward half-pressure, a key contributor to their 6 goal third term leading by 77 points at the third interval. It was party time in the fourth term for Caufield when Irena Malliaras booted her sixth goal, quite a haul given the dour conditions. Hannah Buur was equally brilliant for Caufield finishing with a handy 4 goals profiting off magnificent mid to forward connection.
For Worthy, Saturday morning’s performance was a great reward for his youthful team, aspiring to “take this good form into next week and beyond.”
Ramsden Street Oval played host to a 1-point thriller between third place Fitzroy and eight placed Monash Blues. A slow-starting Fitzroy due to inaccuracy at goal in slippery conditions allowed for Monash (one straight goal) to hold a 3-point margin at quarter time. Any murmurings of an upset were quashed when Fitzroy hit back in the second term with their first, and only, goal for the day. A couple of handy third quarter points for Fitzroy proved decisive despite Monash outscoring Fitzroy in the premiership quarter.
The old-adage that inaccurate goal-kicking costs teams victory was disproved by Fitzroy, who found a friend in kicking more behinds than goals. The game was ultimately decided in the first half, as both teams struggled for momentum in the second half with neither hitting the scoreboard.
Ali Charles, Megan Dore and Rhiannon Hetherington sought to put Monash on their backs and will their team to victory while Sarah Solly, Sancia Bingham and Caitlin Carpenter were consistent performers all day in the losing side. As neither side could break the second-half deadlock, Fitzroy hung on to win at the final siren by 1 point; 1.8 (14) to 2.1 (13)!
An under-manned Oakleigh side could not match the high-flying West Brunswick Magpies at Scammell Reserve. Despite the ladder disparity (West Brunswick 2nd and Oakleigh 10 th ), the first half was anything but one-way traffic. Just the sole major for West Brunswick highlighted the first term, serving as a great testament to the vigilant Oakleigh defence. The Magpies furthered their advantage in the second term but could have been a greater statement on the game had their four behinds were converted.
Oakleigh coach Gavin Kenny conceded the game was lost in the premiership quarter, “the third term got away from us and the opposition kicked three goals.” In saying this, he commended his side’s ability to not be overwhelmed by the Magpies’ aggressive brand of football. “The Oakleigh women played with confidence and composure, resulting in some great passages of play” he said. A two-goal final quarter for Oakleigh cut the margin back to 30 points at the final siren. Unfortunately, for Oakleigh it was a little to late.
West Brunswick’s Hayley Lee, Emma Mitchell, Lydia McAuliffe-Holt and Grace McCall were all pivotal in their side’s 5 goal win.
Westbourne Grammarians continued their road to the Holy Grail after their 16-point win over St Kevin’s Contrary to their high-scoring tendencies this season, Westbourne had to grind out their victory on Saturday.
The tough conditions at Andrew Park Pavillion were evident in the first quarter as Westbourne only had the four scoring shots for the term, with only one being converted by Emilia King. This was largely as a consequence of St Kevin’s strong defensive unit, who according to SKOB coach Mikayla Dohnt held their structure superbly.

A quiet first term was followed up by another goal-less term for Westbourne in the second quarter. However, not scoring was not a major problem for Westbourne as St Kevin’s end was undeterred until the final term. A couple of consolation minor scores for St Kevin’s in the fourth term were inconsequential as Westbourne responded quickly with a major at the other end of the ground courtesy of Madison Allan.
St Kevin’s offered a spirited challenge, but it was not to be as Westbourne did the job for a 16-point win to consolidate their spot atop the Division 4 ladder.
Round 6 action concluded with another 1-point nail-biter between Port Melbourne Chargers and undefeated Old Yarra Cobras at JL Murphy Reserve.
The first half was attritional football, with neither side giving an inch. This was represented in the scoreboard as Port Melbourne held a narrow 3-point margin at half time.
Old Yarra, fresh off the half-time break, seized the moment to take the lead for the first time. It was the most-decisive lead change as Port Melbourne struggled to move the ball to their forward line with any real potency. A late fourth quarter goal from Port Melbourne breathed life into the contest again, but a final forward foray was beaten by the bell. Old Yarra win an absolute classic 1.4 (10) to 1.5 (11)!
Port Melbourne coach Harriet Cooper praised the efforts of her young players, who “demonstrated maturity beyond their years, rising to the occasion with impressive poise and skill.” Certainly, positive signs for this developing Port Melbourne Chargers team.
Among Old Yarra’s best was Kate Caughey, who booted her side’s only goal for the game. Emily Fitzgerald, Jess Major, Bianca Lawrence, Sidni Finch and Jacqui Morton all did their part to ensure Old Yarra continue their winning ways.
At the time of writing the fixture for Round 7 was yet to be communicated. Stay tuned for another Round of epic clashes as these sides battle it out for standings on the Div 4 Women’s ladder!

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Congratulations to Luke on reaching 50 Games. A versatile player he has been used in various positions during his career, whether as marking defender or a ball attacking forward. He has also had the occasional run as a ruckman. Well done Luke!
Jareth Ombiga (North Brunswick)
Well done to Jareth on reaching 50 Games. A mercurial forward he has shown a likening for the spectacular goal. Also used in the midfield his outstanding ball skills are a sight to behold. Congratulations on this special milestone!
Michael Caven (St Bernards)
Big salute to Michael Caven, who this week will join older brothers Tom and Simon in the list of only 75 players to play 100 ‘Senior’ games for the club. A St Bernards Junior, Michael made his Senior debut in 2015 and in a stellar year for him won U/19 State Rep honours and played halfback in our A Grade Premiership side. Showing his great versatility Michael moved to half forward in our 2018 B Grade Premiership year booting 47 goals for the season. Along the way Michael had a stint at VFL level and played some Country and EDFL footy before returning to ‘the pit’ where he has been a key cog in our senior line-up. Well done Michael!
Matt Bird (Old Geelong)
Incredibly talented footballer, admired and respected leader, and one of the best blokes in the VAFA, that’s how anybody you ask would describe Matt Bird. Those who have been lucky to enough to pull on the hoops alongside Birdy over his illustrious 99 game career all describe him as the ultimate teammate who is as tough as he is skilled. Making his debut in 2018, initially using his elite finishing and strong overhead marking as a forward, it wasn’t long before he returned to his natural position at half back where his elite decision making and silky foot skills on both sides of the body were on full display. He is a natural leader who his teammates deeply respect, evidenced by his addition to the leadership group in 2024. A beloved teammate, 100 games is a great celebration for a brilliant footballer who deserves all the praise that will come his way. Congratulations Birdy.
Tim Breadmore (Old Geelong)
This Saturday, we celebrate a true club legend — Tim “Twiggy” Breadmore, as he racks up his 100th game in the hoops. Tim holds down the ruck with flair and finesse, proudly wearing long sleeves as the only ruckman in the comp brave enough to do so. But he’s not just there for the hit-outs, he drifts forward to kick clutch goals that change games and confuse opponents who thought he was just there for centre bounces. In 2018, he claimed the Reserves Best & Fairest, and not long after, earned premiership glory a true testament to his determination, consistency, and perfect timing for a finals run. So here’s to Twiggy — a club favourite, a cult figure, and a man who somehow starts every season in the 2s but always finishes in the 1s. 100 games of heart, hustle, and sleeves. What an achievement! Well Done, Lord Breadmore.
