President’s Report

2025 pre-season commenced for many clubs and players midNovember 2024, and by the time we reached round one, April 4th a lot of football had already been experienced. Fast forward to Friday 26th September our final day and that’s a further 176 days of in season football. All For The Love Of The Game

Premierships have been decided and congratulations to all clubs and teams who have tasted victory. It was another season to remember, full of highlights, challenges and of course for some, disappointments. For the record, in 2025 we registered:

• 67 clubs fielding a combined 307 teams comprising 12,000 plus players.

• 2,616 games including the finals across 23 of Melbourne’s local Government area’s.

• Welcomed Port Chargers Women to the VAFA and say farewell to St Johns.

The Board was thrilled to provide Representative Football as part of the 2025 season:

• Senior men’s and women’s matches at home vs Perth Football League.

• B-D3 men and U19’s ventured to Bendigo to take on the best of the Bendigo Football Netball League.

Mixed results but all wonderful games showcasing the depth of talent within the VAFA and our commitment to representative football. The program coincided with the celebration of 100 years of Big V football, commencing with the Big V Gala Dinner, presented by CitiPower.

Of course, the focus is on football, however our unique amateur status ensures we are about the “Love of The Game” where our clubs offer more than just a game of football

Despite being a cold winter’s evening, we welcomed 500 plus guests to an unforgettable evening that honored the rich legacy and spirit of the Big V. Past players, coaches, clubs, and the broader VAFA community gathered to celebrate a century of history, pride, and passion. It was indeed a very special evening.

Big V representative football is again on the 2026 calendar with teams heading to Adelaide to take on our South Australian counterparts.

It would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge our wonderful umpires. Under the leadership of VAFAUA President, Michael Evans and Umpire Operations Manager, Stephen Privitera, we reached new registration levels in 2025, fielding 611 umpires, up 9% on 2024 and up 41% on 2021. Our key strategic focus continues to be the retention and recruitment of men and women umpires. We ask a lot of our umpires, they do a great job often in trying circumstances, our unique game is recognized as difficult to officiate, despite this the umpires have managed that extremely well, and we are indebted to them.

On a very sad note, the VAFA community is mourning the tragic passing of VAFA umpire Ben Austin following a cricketing accident, and our thoughts are with Ben’s family and friends including his VAFA mates. Our recent press release stated:

Ben was an emerging star in the VAFA umpiring scene, officiating in the Premier Men’s Reserves Grand Final in his fi rst season. For a 17-year-old to be trusted with such a role in the top level of our competition highlights his talent and dedication.

The VAFA is the largest senior football competition in the state, comprising 67 senior clubs, many with junior affiliations and/ or school feeders as well as our university clubs. As reported above, we provide circa 12,000 budding footballers and 600+ umpires, with a great outlet and connection. Of course, the focus is on football, however our unique amateur status ensures we are about the “Love of The Game” where our clubs offer more than just a game of football: camaraderie, friendships and a safe haven for all.

Newton

To our selfless presidents, club committees, volunteers and supporters at every club on behalf of the Board we say thank you for your tireless work, commitment and contribution.

Congratulations to our 2025 premiers, in particular the players, coaches and support staff, the season has been long and has presented challenges, however that’s what makes winning a premiership all the more special. Whilst football is a team sport and we marvel at the skill of the players, it was fitting that we recognized and reward competition best players, notable achievements, our umpires at the season ending Awards Night.

Whilst I don’t intend to acknowledge the achievements of all clubs, I take this opportunity to make special mention of:

• Richmond Central’s Jake Dillion 94 goal hall, the VAFA overall leading goal kicker.

• Old Brighton for its historic 1st ever senior men’s William Buck Premier premiership, Tom Clark and Marcel Bruin, another amazing day at Elsternwick Park to close out the season, 4,000 plus attending.

• Old Scotch women’s double in William Buck Premier Women’s premierships seniors and reserves. including the back-to-back win for its senior women.

• Beaumaris twin senior premierships and a return to Premier B.

• St Marys long awaited senior men’s premiership.

• Old Peninsula historic 1st ever senior men’s premiership.

President’s Report

The Board is indebted to the VAFA administration, capably led by our CEO Jason Reddick. I have witnessed first-hand the many hours Jason, and his team put in to ensure the competition meets the club’s expectations in line with our rules and integrity. I am proud of this team and take this opportunity to acknowledge their professionalism, commitment and exceptional work ethic.

I refer to the CEO’s Report in referencing the performance of our organization and its achievements in light of our Strategic Plan.

I am delighted to report that Bayside City Council has agreed to include in its 2025/2026 budget a masterplan for Elsternwick Park. We have campaigned hard for some time to get this happening enabling a committed plan of future development with a focus on spectator viewing and amenities.

With the installation of the ground flood lights and work commencing on a new media box, we are well placed to continue to use Elsternwick Park for marquee games, the 2025 Holmesglen U19 Premier twilight finals demonstrating the success and popularity of such time slots.

Women’s participation is a key platform of our strategic plan, and it is the aim for the competition for further growth. To that end we have been given AFL Victoria approval to implement a women’s U19 program in 2026 and we have already received a great deal of interest and support. Aimed to replicate the men’s U19 program this competition will enable young women to continue to develop their skills against same aged opposition, assisting with their ultimate graduation to senior women’s football.

For the second year we closed out the season with our William Buck Premier Men’s Grand Final played at Elsternwick Park on the AFL Grand Final Friday public holiday. Like 2024 the community embraced the initiative, with more than 4,000 attending in sunny weather to witness stunning competitive football games. For those unable to attend, the day was captured brilliantly by the VAFA Media team with both live streaming and radio broadcasts covering the action.

The 2025 VAFA Board worked diligently throughout the year, having welcomed returning Directors plus our new “recruits” , two Board Appointees. The current board comprising:

• Paul Newton: President

• Sarah Delbosc: Vice President and Chair Community SC, member of the Football SC

• Ivan Delac: Vice President and Chair Football SC

• Matt Scholten: Director, Treasurer and Chair of Finance SC.

• Nicole Hall: Director and Chair Governance SC

• Marty Keliher: Director, Chair Commercial SC and member of the Football SC

• Joan Eddy: Director and member of Governance and Community SC’s

• Mark Hibbins: Director and member of the Football SC

• Sharon Reed: Director Appointee

• George Haros: Director Appointee

Currently comprising 7 former club presidents as well as a breadth of added Director experience we believe we are a Board that is in touch with member clubs and their challenges. Front of mind: cost escalation, revenue challenges and engaging volunteers, all very real and threatening.

The tough economic climate prevailed again in 2025, regardless our Commercial Partners remain great supporters of the VAFA, in particular we extend our thanks and gratitude to Premium Partner William Buck for their recommitment in 2025 for a further 3-year term, it gives us great confidence that we can deliver sustainable benefits to our valued partners.

In closing, on behalf of my fellow Directors, I thank you all for your commitment to the VAFA, I hope 2025 has delivered memories that you will treasure and has provided a source of enjoyment throughout Melbourne’s winter. I trust you will get some time away before the inevitable happens, 2026 pre-season and beyond.

Finance Report

I have pleasure in providing the Treasurer’s Report for the financial year ending 31 October 2025.

The VAFA is reporting a profit of $9,960 for the 12-month period to 31 October 2025 (FY 2024 profit - $19,018).

The following notes are provided to clarify the annual

financial statements and to highlight the key items impacting performance:

1.REVENUE

The VAFA achieved a $246,794 (6.3%) rise in total revenue for the year, taking turnover to $4,165,320 (2024 - $3,918,526). The major factors for this increase in revenue were:

a.Grants – An additional $226,594 was secured in 2025, taking the total receipts to $445,291 (2024 - $218,697). The majority of this came from Federal Government SARC grant money received in 2025 for delivering the Gambling Harm Reduction Program (in partnership with the Perth FL and Adelaide FL).

AFL Victoria contributed grants for delivery of certain club support, umpire and women’s programs. The Tackle Your Feelings grant was increased to support the move from part time to full time employment of the Community staff member delivering the program.

b.SponsorshipFees – In a challenging economic environment, it is pleasing to see that revenue from corporate partners rose again by $76,425 to $608,372 (2024 - $531,947). Since 2022, Sponsorship has risen by $270,500 (80%).

c.Clubpaymentsforumpires– The continual growth in the recruitment of umpires in 2025 lead to a greater number of registered umpires officiating and an increase in Club payments of $51,422 for this service. This rise in Club payments coincides with the increase in umpire expenses below.

d.FinalsIncome – With ticket prices kept static, finals income rose by $35,853 on the back of increased crowd attendances, supported by securing quality venues in easily accessible locations.

Negative Revenue Impacts:

a.FootballsandEquipment– The supply of footballs and equipment was $97,144 lower than 2024 because the stock and service was outsourced to third party partners to supply to Clubs in 2025. There is a reduction in Cost of Sales commensurate with this, with rights income forming part of the sponsorship income.

b.Fines – Pleasingly fines issued to Clubs reduced for a second year in a row. In 2025, they dropped by $18,563 (33%) to $37,607 (2024 - $56,170). This is positive and the continual education of, and compliance with rules, by Clubs, coaches, players and spectators, should ensure this figure continues to decline in future years.

2.INVESTMENTINPLAYERS

The VAFA continues to deliver support to our Amateur players and umpires by investing the annual $11 registration fee into services for their benefit.

$111,711 was raised from Player Registration Fees in 2025, with the funds invested into player services as follows:

a.Insurance – The VAFA invested $100,000 (negotiated down from $120,000) in securing Gold level Player Injury Insurance at no cost to Clubs or players, to provide players with significantly increased returns (eg. 90% reimbursement versus bronze level of 60%) on injury claims for non-Medicare services.

b. The VAFA invested a further $13,263 into the Player AssistanceProgram delivered through Converge International. This provides all registered players in the competition with access to three free counselling sessions relating to their mental health. This cost is grouped into ‘OtherCosts’ in the Profit and Loss Statement.

After providing for the above services, a balance of $1,551 was required to be transferred from the Player Registration Reserve to Retained Earnings. This is shown in the Statement of Changes in Equity in the Financial Statements.

3.EXPENSEINCREASES

aEmployeeBenefitsExpense– The major components of the $236,902 increase result from:

• The staff member in the Community and Club Support department to manage The Real Stakes program through to 30 June 2025. This role was fully funded from the grant proceeds. It existed for 3 months in 2024 financial year and 8 months of 2025 financial year;

• The Community staff Member delivering the Tackle Your Feelings program moving from part time to full time, supported by additional grant money.

• Investment in a new social media full time staff resource in accordance with our Media Plan;

• Termination payment to a departed employee;

• Effect of CPI increases in wages.

b.Audit, legalandconsultancyexpenses – There has been a $20,852 increase in these costs year on year. Whilst savings were made in Accounting and Consulting, legal fees associated with a VCAT case from a former Director and a legal dispute with a Club over Code of Conduct matters, were the reasons for the increase.

Finance Report

c.UmpireCosts

$48,896 increase comes from:

• Increase in number of registered umpires (559 to 611) and the number of games covered throughout the season.

• 2.5% increase in the match rate payable to umpires (partially offset by the removal of finals match rate bonus that existed in 2024).

4.SIGNIFICANTCOSTSAVINGS

a.RepresentativeFootball – a significant saving of $56,645 reflected that our Big V Men’s and Women’s teams hosted Perth Football League this year at Elsternwick Park. As such, we didn’t incur the same 2024 costs for fl ights and accommodation. Our Men’s Representative team comprising players from B to D3 and U19 Men’s teams travelled up and back in the same day to Bendigo to play the Bendigo Football League;

5.BALANCESHEETSTRENGTH

b.FinanceCosts– another significant saving of $26,393 was made in merchant fees attached to finals gate receipts and event attendances. Management achieved this through a change in supplier. reports were distributed and presented to each individual Club (without identifying opposition Club’s names) so the Clubs could see where they rank against Clubs of similar standing

a.CashandCashEquivalents– The VAFA maintains a healthy balance of $871,477 in cash and cash equivalents. That balance includes a separate Player Registration Reserve account with $356,553 for future player benefits.

b.TradeReceivables - The outstanding balance at year end has been reduced by $12,613 to $110,379. Since 2022, the Trade Debtors balance of $845,000 has been reduced by $735,000 (87%), without writing off any bad debts.

c.Inventories – Management engaged third party providers Victor Sports (footballs) and A Grade Supplies (equipment) to take all stock items and reduce stock on hand / inventory to zero.

d.TradeandOtherPayables– Trade Payables balance at year end has been reduced by $35,627 to a balance of $1,414. Other Payables of $179,962 is predominately GST and PAYG due to be paid via the lodgement of the November BAS Activity Statement.

e.Borrowings – VAFA took out an interest free loan with Bayside City Council to fund the Elsternwick Park office/club room development. The loan was paid down by a further $56,437 in 2025 in accordance with the scheduled payments.

6.AUDITORS

a.Unquali fi edopinion – The Auditors, Saward Dawson, again provided an unqualified opinion on the status of the 2025 Financial Statements.

b.RecommendationstoManagement – The Auditors have reported that items raised in prior year have either been actioned or are in progress. 2025 matters identified are at low risk.

c.Services – We thank Audit Partner Matt Crouch, Manager Calvin Ho, and the team from Saward Dawson for the professional and efficient work in finalising the audit to meet our deadlines for presenting accounts to our Members.

7.OTHERINITIATIVES

a.ClubFinancialBenchmarking– Sub-committee member Lizzie Wardlaw produced the Benchmarking financial reports based on Club’s 2024 financial information submitted to the VAFA. These reports were distributed and presented to each individual Club (without identifying opposition Club’s names) so the Clubs could see where they rank against Clubs of similar standing, thus helping direct their focus to opportunities for improvement. Whilst this new format required some additional formatting work from Club Treasurers, the Club feedback has been very positive about the value of the information provided.

8.FINANCESUB-COMMITTEE

a.Thankyou– To my fellow sub-committee members, Bryan Gibbs, CEO Jason Reddick and Executive Assistant Karen Bennett, thank you for your important contributions throughout the year.

9.CLUBS

I also extend my thanks to our Clubs who have overwhelmingly taken their financial responsibilities very seriously and ensured that our competition both from a VAFA financial perspective and at their own Clubs remains healthy and vibrant in what have been challenging economic times.

Chief Executive Of ficer’s Report

2025 represented the third year of our four-year Strategic Plan and I am pleased to report that we have again made great progress in delivering on the objectives outlined in the plan.

Below is a short summary of some of the key objectives achieved in 2025.

Football & Umpiring:

• Protect the integrity, ideals, values and cultures of the VAFA.

All our decision making is governed by the core values of Respect, Integrity, Community and Inclusive. We uphold the VAFA Constitution, VAFA Rules and the National Community Football Handbook policies in administering the competition.

• Provide highly valued football competitions and positive playing and spectator experiences.

We worked tirelessly with multiple Councils, other Leagues and Clubs, and were thrilled to provide four highly regarded state league level venues in readiness for the 2025 finals series: Box Hill, Coburg, Preston and Sandringham to host the neutral finals along with Elsternwick Park. Morleigh and Hadfield were also used sparingly to service for clubs in those areas.

Our Big V Representative opportunities continue to be highly valued by our players, with 450 nominations received for the final 88 positions that made up our four teams in 2025: Men’s, and Women’s who played against Perth Football League, and B-D3 and U19 men’s who competed against Bendigo Football League.

• Collaboratively stabilise and grow the women’s and men’s football competitions.

Our Football department continued to conduct on line forums throughout 2025 with Club representatives to get feedback on what their key pain points are and how we can support.

• Invest significantly in umpiring, recruitment, retention, resources, technology and experiences.

VAFA Umpire Operations Manager Stephen Privitera did a great job in managing our million-dollar investment into umpiring, covering match day payments, recruiting, uniform offers, coaching, training venues and women’s academy. Pleasingly we achieved a further 9% increase in the number of registered VAFA umpires to 611.

Thanks to new VAFAUA President Michael Evans and his Committee, we were able to agree to a pay rate deal for 2025-2027 that provides all parties with surety and ensures our umpires feel valued and remain the best remunerated in community football.

• Review the financial engagement with VAFA clubs.

The Affiliation Fees for Clubs were again kept static for the third year in a row (together with a one-off discount offer in 2023 for Clubs adopting the direct debit system).

The umpire match fees were again on-charged on a user pays basis in line with the appointment of umpires to games. Umpire match day rates were increased minimally by 2.5% (an annual increase set for next two years) and the umpires finals match rate bonus was removed for 2025 and beyond to assist Clubs in meeting their finals costs.

Commercial & Brand:

• Grow the VAFA Commercial return to minimise servicing costs to clubs.

In a tough economic climate, we continue to grow our Commercial Partnership program, with Guzman Y Gomez, Big Screen Video, CitiPower, Sportscover, HITIQ, ISC, Footy Trips and CASA coming on board in 2025.

Our Commercial team led by Glen Towers has achieved another 20% increase in Corporate Partnership revenue in 2025. In the three years of our Strategic Plan, we have nearly doubled Corporate Partnership revenue from $337k to $608k. The value of our offering is reflected in the fact that our Premium Partner William Buck have extended their partnership agreement for a further 3 years, taking the partnership through to a 13 year term.

• Increase the awareness of the VAFA competition through Media.

In accordance with our media plan, we invested in a Social Media Co-ordinator Dylan Humphries (Cench Footy) to connect with the younger generation through Instagram and Tik Tok. In the 90 days between our Big V representative matches and the VAFA Awards Night, 623 Instagram posts produced 17 million views from our 20,000 followers.

Over the year, the newly refreshed VAFA website received nearly 6 million page views (up 43% on 2024) from 431,075 users. KommunityTV (KTV) livestreamed 50 matches throughout the season engaging over 15,600 views. KTV produced 49 printed articles and 27 digital articles that delivered over 52,000 page views. Their 113 social media posts led to 846,000 impressions. Our SEN broadcast radio partner covered 23 VAFA games, securing over 6,500 streams (up 30% on 2024) and over 100,000 article views.

With Broadcast & Content Manager Jason Bennett leading the way, we produced 55 Podcasts that generated an impressive 48,965 listens (up 353% on 2024).

• Increase the engagement of the VAFA community through appealing VAFA events.

We successfully launched the inaugural VAFA Golf Day in February 2025. Played at the prestigious Kingston Heath Golf Club (which will host the Presidents Cup), the event attracted VAFA community golfers from all over Melbourne and was a sell-out.

We produced a memorable gala event to celebrate 100 years of the Big V Representative teams in action. Held at Centrepiece at Melbourne Park, the event attracted over 500 guests.

The William Buck Finals Lunch continued to prove an entertaining VAFA event to celebrate the commencement of September finals action.

In the three years of our Strategic Plan, we have nearly doubled Corporate Partnership revenue from $337k to $608k.

Chief Executive Of ficer’s Report

Community:

• Invest in training and resources to ensure we are truly inclusive community.

Facilitated workshops for VAFA Clubs to adopt the AFL Vic Women’s and Girls Charter.

Facilitated a pre-season Women & Girls specific coach induction workshop.

Specifically targeted U19 and Women & Girls coaches to participate in a Level 2 coaching workshop, to upskill their awareness and management of inclusive practices.

• Increase our capacity to support clubs through innovation, service and training.

Having established a template and collated Club’s 2024 financial submissions, VAFA issued a financial benchmarking report to all Clubs to help them compare their own financial operations against Clubs in equivalent grades, and identify areas of best practice and areas for potential improvement.

VAFA partnered with Specialist Direct to produce the MiRA Injury Management System that was provided free of charge to our Clubs. 56 Clubs took up the webinar on boarding showing the immense interest in the product.

• Invest in the provision of welfare support and training programs.

VAFA again invested in the Tackle Your Feelings program to run workshops for 22 VAFA Clubs reaching over 900 Club participants, to support those who may be facing mental health challenges.

VAFA continued the ‘Player Assistance Program’ to provide free mental health counselling services delivered by Converge International to players in need. This service was expanded in 2025 to include all VAFA Umpires.

Provided an upgrade to Gold level player injury insurance coverage at no cost to Clubs or players. This provides players with significantly higher reimbursement (90% v 60% under Bronze cover) of all non-Medicare claimable medical costs such as physio treatment.

• Develop strong partnerships with Community Partners that benefit the VAFA.

In 2025, VAFA partnered with Adelaide Footy League and Perth Football League to launch The Real Stakes project, a joint community initiative focused on reducing gambling harm

associated with online sports betting. The project was backed by the Federal Government, Deakin University and Sports Community and achieved positive outcomes.

VAFA continued to drive strong partnerships with our key Community Partners: Tackle Your Feelings (Mental Health), TAC (Driver safety), and Breast Cancer Network Australia (Women’s and Men’s Health), with themed rounds featuring across all our competitions for each of these causes.

• Implement practices to support Facility and Infrastructure development for clubs and the association.

VAFA continued to assist our Clubs in securing funding for a record number of club requests with a record level of grant money. In 2025, 122 (2024 – 103) successful VAFA Club applications secured a total of $218,598 (2024 - $206,499) in grant income across three programs: TAC Club Rewards; Country Footy Grant; Good for Footy Raffle. This is the most of any league in the state.

Governance:

• Establish strong Governance structures and practices.

The Governance sub-committee is currently reviewing the VAFA Board Charter to govern the Director’s roles and responsibilities.

• Govern the VAFA with clear policies that support all members and stakeholders.

In 2025, I was appointed as a Metropolitan Community League representative on the AFL Vic Policy Reference Group. This provides VAFA with clear oversight over any new or amended policies that are put forward for inclusion in the AFL National Community Football Handbook, which VAFA adopts.

Based on Club feedback and our own reviews, we propose updates to VAFA Rules for Clubs to vote on.

• Provide an environment that maximises the skills and contribution of the VAFA Board and Administration

Continue to provide budgets for professional development that can be accessed for all staff and Board members needing to upskill for their role at the VAFA.

• Identify top priority projects for the VAFA over the next 4 years. Risk Management continues to be a focus to address as a priority for the Governance subcommittee.

“ ”

VAFA continued to assist our Clubs in securing funding for a record number of club requests with a record level of grant money.

Thank You

None of the above achievements could have been possible without the continued dedication and expertise of our valued VAFA staff It’s always inspiring to see staff members who go the extra mile in order to service the VAFA, our stakeholders, Clubs, volunteers and players.

I wish to acknowledge the staff who have moved on during the year: Gabriella Martin, Justin Griffin and Dale Christie (Football), Susan Miller (Commercial and Media) and Claire Castle (Community). We thank you for your contribution to the VAFA and wish you success in this next stage of your careers.

I wish to thank all the Club volunteers and committee members who work tirelessly throughout the year. I, like the VAFA Board and staff, truly value your experience, efforts, passion, collaboration and understanding when needed.

A shout out to Phil Stevens, Nick Bourke and members of the VAFA Life Members Association who continue to provide a great source of wisdom, experience and support when needed. Also, to Sue Anderson and our Heritage Committee volunteers for all their hours of unpaid work, you were instrumental in the success of the 100 year Big V Gala.

My thanks for the support from VAFA President Paul Newton and all the Directors who provide enormous amounts of time, effort and expertise voluntarily. It’s terrific to work with all Directors aligned with Management in delivering the strategic goals and ensuring the VAFA remains the best and most respected Community football competition in the nation.

On behalf of the VAFA staff, we trust everyone enjoys a safe and well-earned break over the Christmas period, and we look forward to returning to work with all our Clubs and stakeholders on delivering another successful season in 2026.

Football Operations

Overview

Dale Christie led the Football Operations team again in 2025. Mark Stevens was elevated to Football Operations Manager and Bella Freeman joined the team in May this year as Tribunal & Compliance Coordinator

While we had our fair share of challenges, we had valuable learnings and as always, decisions were made with integrity. With 67 Clubs, with 291 teams, in 28 sections, including 4 Representative Teams, and with an eight-week Finals Series culminating in the Willaim Buck Premier Men›s Grand final on September 27, it was another rewarding season, and we would like to congratulate all section Premiers, and winners of Awards.

Fixturing, Structure, and Re-grading

Structuring divisions, fixturing competitions and re-grading teams took on an even greater challenge in 2025, with so many late changes to team entries and the impact on fixturing that was caused by the increase in the number of teams that needed to be re-graded.

Re-grading itself takes a lot of analysis of results, registered players, age demographics, ability to hit the scoreboard, and players on the field. A time-consuming exercise at the best of times in the aim to make the right call on a team’s true capabilities.

With the focus on providing competitive games of football as the key decision element, for the first time ever, we extended re-grading into William Buck Premier Women’s (Melbourne Uni and Old Yarra were dropped down to Premier B and Beaumaris elevated to Women’s Premier) and Holmesglen Under 19 Men’s Premier structures (Old Scotch and Old Trinity both requested to remain in their same competitions as 2024 due to the changes in their strength of list).

Old Xaverians have traditionally fielded powerful teams across the Men’s Thirds Divisions. Unfortunately, in the 2024 season and early rounds of 2025, we saw evidence of opposition teams due to face Old Xaverians, forfeiting those games or having players withdrawing which left them taking the field with fewer numbers. Accordingly, we took the action to elevate the Old Xaverians Thirds teams such that two played in Premier Thirds, two played in Division 1 Thirds, and the fifth team played in Division 2.

This was well received by the Clubs in Men’s Thirds and resulted in many more competitive results across the competition. Pleasingly, all the Old Xaverian teams continued to compete strongly, and all their sides made the finals, with the Premier Men’s Thirds team winning the fl ag.

We recognise the delay in producing the final fixtures after regrading this year was a concern for a lot of Clubs in their efforts to plan for game day preparation, resourcing match day volunteers, and scheduling club events. We have reviewed this whole operation and made changes to the processes and system to ensure we deliver more timely fixtures next year. This will entail strict deadlines for confirming team entries.

The great news was that after all the initial pain, the effect of regrading was that we had a much greater level of competitiveness across the competitions for the remainder of the year, which is of course the purpose in keeping players engaged with their team.

We welcomed Port Melbourne Chargers women’s teams into the VAFA for their inaugural season, where they acquitted themselves well in reaching the finals in Premier B, whilst their reserves team made it through to the first round of the Division 4 finals.

Bulleen Templestowe left to play in Division 4 of the Eastern Football League, while the Mentone Panthers, having saluted with a Premiership in 2024, fell into remission.

Representative Football

Representative football took on a bigger meaning in 2025, as the VAFA community celebrated 100 years of Big V competition, with the first Big V Men’s game played against South Australia at the MCG in 1925.

All Coaches and selected players from our Big V representative teams: Men’s, Women’s, B-D3, and U19 Men’s, attended the Big V Gala to receive their guernsey and be inspired by the stories of those who have come before them.

The Big V Men and Women hosted Perth Football League at Sportscover Arena (Elsternwick Park), the third consecutive year clash between our Leagues. Both games were played at a very high standard (many saying it was a better level than the Essendon v Richmond AFL game that followed at the MCG that night!).

The Big V Women again performed brilliantly to record a win and maintain their amazing record of having never lost a game since their inception in 2017.

The Big V Women again performed brilliantly to record a win and maintain their amazing record of having never lost a game since their inception in 2017. The Big V Men started well but were gradually worn down by a talent laden Sandgroper team that won by 6 points in a terrific exhibition of high-pressure football. One sad note was the ACL injury suffered early in the game by Sam Flockhart. A highly talented player who was on Richmond’s VFL list, we wish him well with his rehab for a full recovery and earliest return to high level competition.

Congratulations to all players for being selected, coaches and to support staff for their work in the lead up to the match and the logistics of the trip, and special mention to Paul Groves (Women) and Daniel Harford (Men) who both put in a power of work as Head Coaches of each side.

Our Big V Men’s (Premier B – Division 3) team, again lead by Coach Luke Mahoney and his assistants, headed to the QE Oval in Bendigo to defend the title they had won against the Bendigo Football Netball League by 13 points at Elsternwick in 2024.

In trying conditions, our team bravely fought back from a ¾ time deficit, against the wind and in the rain, to level the scores at 68 points apiece when the fourth quarter siren sounded. In the band head into two periods of extra time 10 points

The best of our Under 19 players were on show as a curtain raiser to the Big V vs BFNL match in Bendigo. Paul Carrigan who had coached the South U19’s, took the reins and the players showed their class with a big win.

Finals

The 2025 Finals Series began on August 9 with the Semi Finals of the Men’s Thirds Competition, and finishing on September 27 with the William Buck Premier Men’s Grand Final.

126 matches, using 11 neutral venues, across 8 weeks, with over 45,000 spectators, eventually saw 32 Premierships awarded.

We initiated twilight finals for the Holmesglen Premier Men’s U19’s Semi Final, Preliminary Final and Grand Final at Elsternwick Park, which was very popular with the players and spectators alike.

Premier Men’s Senior Grand Final played as the only Metropolitan League Grand Final on the public holiday Friday in September continues to be a success with growth in crowd attendance (up 8%), broadcast viewership growth (up 38%), and unparalleled newspaper, radio and social media exposure. There were over 1 million views of VAFA’s own Instagram posts relating to the Grand Final game.

Congratulations to all the Premiers, with special mention to

• Old Brighton in winning their first ever Premier Men’s GF and back-to-back Women’s GF (Division 1 and Premier B)

• Old Scotch in winning back-to-back Premier Women’s GF

• Old Peninsula in winning their first ever Premiership (Division 1 Men’s)

• St Mary’s Men’s breaking a 32-year Premiership drought in winning Division 2 fl ag, whilst their Women’s team took out the Division 3 Women’s fl ag in a Grand Final that went into extra time.

Tribunal, VRO, Melees, and Investigations

In 2025, there were:

• 76 Match Day Reports (2024 – 71) of which 78% were striking or rough conduct;

• 39 (33) Video Reports;

• 67 (80) Club Investigations

• 32 (45) Tribunal Hearings with an increase in number of players accepting the prescribed penalty;

• 39 (31) Melees, coaches remain at risk of suspension if team has 4 melees;

Permit Committee and Integrity Division

11 players fronted the Permit Committee in 2025, with more requiring a Statutory Declaration to allow them to play in the VAFA.

The Permit Committee meets all new VAFA players coming in from either the AFL or VFL to discuss, educate and remind them of their obligations to the Amateur Status.

Statutory Declarations were required by players breaching Rule 46 in that they played in the VAFA, transferred out to a professional league, and then returned in the same season. The Stat Dec was to declare that while they were playing in the other league, they were not remunerated or rewarded in any way, thereby not breaching their Amateur Status in 2025.

All players that met with the Permit Committee or had to submit a Stat Dec were permitted to play in the VAFA in 2025.

Thank you

Thank you to all our VAFA Football department staff noted above, including Justin Griffin and Gabriella Martin who moved on earlier in the year, for your contribution towards the 2025 operations.

To our VAFA Board, especially the Football Sub Committee led by Ivan Delac, Sarah Delbosc, Mark Hibbins and Martin Kelliher, thanks for your support and guidance.

A big thanks too, to all the Club representatives: Presidents, Committee, Operations staff, and Volunteers, for your ongoing support and patience. Enjoy the break and we look forward to working with you again in 2026.

Umpire Operations

Recruitment

The recruitment of new umpires to the VAFA was the key focus for the Umpires Department in 2025. As part of the VAFA strategic plan, the association invested strongly in this vital area to ensure that umpire coverage levels continue to increase across all competitions. The key target markets for umpiring were identified namely: school and university students and former players. Engaging flyers, social media advertisements and website stories were utilized to capture the attention of these focus groups and convert them into new umpires.

The Umpires Department conducted a number of successful academies at the following schools: Carey Grammar, Caulfield Grammar, Ivanhoe Grammar, Prahan High School and Sacred Heart Girls College. The school academy program taught participants the fundamental skills of umpiring to prepare them for community level. Universities were also engaged with presentations at Holmesglen Institute, Richmond Institute and Melbourne University. The students had the opportunity to attend pre-season training and umpire as part of their course placement hours.

These effective recruitment initiatives achieved exceptional results with over 100 new umpires signing up and overall registrations surging to 611, a 9% increase in 2025. Overall, umpire registrations have increased significantly over the past 4 years with a 41% increase achieved since 2021. This has benefited clubs on matchday by reducing the burden on volunteer club umpires.

It was terrific to witness a substantial number of younger umpires joining the competition as boundary and goal umpires. These roles are the perfect introduction to umpiring for students aged 14 and above and provide a strong platform for them to thrive in that discipline or move into field umpiring.

Uniforms

The entire umpiring group moved across to New Balance uniforms for the first time in season 2025. This significant process was successful due to the implementation of a new online store that streamlined ordering processes. The VAFA also invested in this program by providing funding that ensured all existing umpires received a free umpire shirt. Furthermore, all first season umpires received a complimentary uniform pack to ensure there were no financial barries to become a VAFA umpire.

Coaching

The experienced coaching panel was again led by Owen Hinson (Field), Shaun Bourke (Boundary), and Cooper Macdonald (Goal). The VAFA was delighted to again secure the services of all three discipline leaders to ensure continuity with coaching plans and knowledge of the umpiring group.

Michael Gough joined the coaching panel as Assistant Field Coach. He performed exceptionally by supporting Lionel Katz (Senior), Campbell Hymans and Ben Lefebvre (Development) who ensured the umpires in their field squads received a high level of care and attention each week. Matthew Gough and Julia Stokes were recruited as Assistant Boundary Coaches. They supported Shaun Bourke and ensured there was a high level of training available to boundary umpires on Wednesday nights and through matchday observations. Graham Templar joined the goal umpire coaching team as Assistant Coach along with the returning Adrian Keane. The VAFA thanks our hardworking umpire coaches for the many hours they spent training and developing umpires throughout the season.

The Umpiring Department proudly launched the Female Umpire Academy on 30 April with a special evening at Elsternwick Park that celebrated the growth and importance of female umpiring.

Training and Junior Collaboration

Umpire Operations

The umpires were well prepared for the 2025 season with pre-season training commencing on the 5th of February. Preseason training was run at Elsternwick Park Oval 4 every Monday and Wednesday night throughout February and March. Training then moved to Elsternwick Park Oval 1 in April for the commencement of the season. The VAFA continued its longstanding junior league relationship with the South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL). Therefore, Monday night training sessions had a youthful focus with a joint VAFA training session held with the SMJFL umpires. The main training session was held on Wednesday night with a combination of on field and video coaching available. Fitness Coach Tom O’Connor prepared the running component of the program to ensure umpires were fit and ready from round one.

Training sessions were well attended with attendance numbers often surpassing 100 umpires. The Umpires Association (UA) worked collaboratively with the VAFA to ensure a supportive and high-performance culture. The UA also fostered a welcoming environment through team dinners post Wednesday night training. This ensured social connections could form ahead of another successful UA Awards Night at the Grand Hyatt.

The Umpiring Group had the opportunity to train at an alternative training venue in the inner northern suburbs with VAFA club UHS-VU at Brens Oval. Former VAFA and current VFL boundary umpire Aidan McDonald assisted with coaching at the venue. This northern training venue ensured all umpires could access training regardless of their geographic location.

VAFA Female Umpire Academy

The Umpiring Department proudly launched the Female Umpire Academy on 30 April with a special evening at Elsternwick Park that celebrated the growth and importance of female umpiring. Ashleigh Brennan – AFL Women & Girls Experience Lead, headlined the event as the guest speaker, sharing valuable insights and experiences with the attendees.

Another academy event was held on 21 July with Women’s Health organisation Live Life Whole running a well-attended session on Nutrition, Gut Health, Hydration, Skin & Sleep.

Amy Lister and Julia Stokes (Female Umpire Liaison O fficers) were an incredible support to female umpires through regular check ins, training support and feedback opportunities.

Commercial & Events

The 2025 season marked another significant year for the Victorian Amateur Football Association across its commercial and events portfolios. Through an expanding calendar of marquee events and the continued growth of strategic partnerships, the VAFA strengthened its reputation for delivering premium experiences for clubs, players, partners, and the wider community.

CommercialPartnerships

Throughout 2025, the VAFA maintained a strong and stable commercial partner portfolio, with several key partners renewing their commitment at the start of the year. We were pleased to confirm the continuation of partnerships with Anytime Fitness, ComwireIT, OSVi, SKINS, Victor Sports, MBSS Security Services, Club Connect, Carruthers Executive, A Grade Club Supplies, and Ascot Vale Sports Trophies — all of whom have demonstrated ongoing support of the VAFA.

We were equally proud to welcome new partners into the VAFA commercial family, including Guzman y Gomez, Big Screen Video, HitIQ, Sportscover, CitiPower, Footy Trips, and CASA Spirits & Cocktails. These additions further broadened the range of benefits and engagement opportunities available to clubs and players, helping ensure the continued growth and sustainability of the competition.

A major highlight in 2025 was the announcement by William Buck Managing Partner, Adam Kirkwood-Scott, at the William Buck VAFA Finals Luncheon of a further three-year extension of William Buck’s premium partnership with the VAFA. The tremendous support from William Buck over the past decade has been invaluable, and this renewed agreement will extend the partnership to an impressive 13 years in total.

VAFAGolfClassic

The 2025 events calendar commenced with the inaugural VAFA Golf Classic, hosted at Kingston Heath Golf Club. The event sold out well in advance, reflecting the strong interest and support from both VAFA clubs and commercial partners. Participants enjoyed 18 holes on one of Melbourne’s most prestigious courses, complemented by a pre-round breakfast, post-golf gourmet luncheon, and networking opportunities.

The success of the inaugural VAFA Golf Classic firmly established the event as a fl agship fixture on the VAFA calendar, providing an engaging and high-quality platform for connection among partners, clubs, in a relaxed golf setting.

VAFAClubConference

Attention then quickly turned to the annual VAFA Club Conference, once again hosted at the Holmesglen Conference Centre in Chadstone — thanks to the ongoing support of Major Partner Holmesglen.

The VAFA Commercial Partner Trade Fair was again at full capacity, with partners showcasing a range of products, services, and initiatives designed to support VAFA clubs and players. The event continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening the relationship between the VAFA, its partners, and its clubs.

Commercial & Events

CentenaryofBigVRepresentativeFootball

A tent pole event in 2025 was the Centenary of Big V VAFA Representative Football, celebrating 100 years of Big V excellence and tradition. To mark this historic occasion, the annual Big V Luncheon was elevated to a Big V Centenary Gala celebration, presented by CitiPower.

More than 500 guests attended the celebration at Centrepiece at Melbourne Park, where past players, current representatives, coaches, officials, and partners came together to honour the legacy of the Big V.

The Big V Women then kicked off the representative weekend in style, extending their unbeaten streak with a strong performance against the Perth Football League (PFL) Women. Under lights at Sportscover Arena (Elsternwick Park), the Big V Men then battled the PFL Men in a thrilling twilight clash, narrowly falling short in a high-quality contest.

A dominant Big V U19 team travelled to Bendigo to take on the best young talent from the Bendigo Football Netball League (BFNL), while a Men’s Representative team featuring players from Premier B through Division 3 recorded a hardfought extra time victory in their encounter with the BFNL.

These representative fixtures provided outstanding brand visibility for our valued partners, with William Buck, Guzman y Gomez, CitiPower, Sportscover, and Belgravia Apparel (through the New Balance brand) featuring prominently on the Centenary-inspired Big V uniforms, reinforcing the strength of our partnerships on one of the VAFA’s most prestigious stages.

FinalsandGrandFinalsSeries

The 2025 William Buck VAFA Finals Luncheon was once again a major highlight of the season, with AFL greats Greg “Diesel” Williams and Dermott Brereton entertaining guests with stories from their illustrious careers. VAFA Media’s “For the Love of the Game” podcast also hosted a special live edition, previewing all the finals action across the competition.

The VAFA Finals Series provided prime opportunities for partner activations across the VAFA’s most highly attended game days.

• William Buck continued its popular initiative of providing complimentary hot beverages to spectators at both the Men’s and Women’s Premier Grand Finals.

• AltX partnered with the VAFA to deliver a gourmet game-day BBQ at the Men’s Grand Final.

• Guzman y Gomez delighted fans with giveaways and promotional merchandise, adding to the festive Grand Final atmosphere.

• Sherrin mascot “T.W. Sherrin” proved a fan favourite among children attending the William Buck Premier Women’s Grand Final.

VAFAAwardsNight

The 2025 VAFA Awards Night was another highlight of the calendar, celebrating individual and club excellence while recognising the invaluable contributions of volunteers, coaches, and officials.

The evening also provided the opportunity for several commercial partners to take centre stage through award presentations, including:

• Anytime Fitness Rising Stars

• The Pass Volunteer of the Year

• Carruthers Executive Coaches of the Year

• Victor Sports Trainer of the Year

These awards reflect the VAFA’s ongoing commitment to recognising achievements at every level and the integral role our partners play in supporting the VAFA community.

Acknowledgements

We extend our gratitude to all attendees, clubs, and supporters for their continued engagement with VAFA events throughout 2025.

We also offer our sincere appreciation to the Commercial and Media Sub-Committee, chaired by VAFA Board Member Martin Kelliher, and comprising Nicole Hall, Matt Scholten, CEO Jason Reddick, Head of Media and Digital Cameron Voss, and Marketing and Events Manager Susan Miller. Their strategic guidance and support were instrumental in delivering another successful year across all commercial and event initiatives.

The VAFA Commercial and Media team delivered another outstanding year of quality content, support, and output. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Cameron Voss, Jason Bennett, Dylan Humphries, and Susan Miller for their dedication, professionalism, and exceptional contribution throughout the year.

Finally, we acknowledge the exceptional support of all VAFA Commercial, Media, and Broadcast Partners throughout the 2025 season. Their professionalism, collaboration, and ongoing commitment continue to strengthen the Association’s ability to deliver first-class competitions, events, and community programs that uphold the values of amateur football.

Media and Broadcast

2025 was another successful year for VAFA Media, with expanded coverage across our digital channels including social media, live streams and later in the year, the launch of the brand-new VAFA App, allowing us to maximise the reach of VAFA content across the wider community.

Website&Newsletter

Building on the foundation of last year’s re-launch, the VAFA website continued to shine in 2025, showcasing all the wonderful content produced by VAFA Media, both internally and through our network of volunteer reporters, as well as live streams, VAFA TV on-demand replays and much more. A major enhancement introduced early in the season was the direct integration of match data directly on the VAFA website – allowing fans to easily view fixtures, results and ladders without being redirected to the PlayHQ website. This help achieve a 41% increase in pageviews to the site, with almost 6 million pages served (26% of those being the new match pages). Importantly, this also significantly increased total ad impressions for our commercial partners across the site.

The VAFANewsletter continues to be an important communication tool and commercial asset for the VAFA, with the weekly email hitting the inboxes of more than 27,000 recipients, with an impressive open rate of 33.5% and 6.8% click through rate, both well above the industry standard.

VAFAApp

The new O fficial VAFAApp launched at the beginning of September following extensive development work with Premier Data. As the newest digital home of VAFA content, the App features live scores, fixtures & results, ladders, extensive team and player stats, plus all the latest news and push notifications for important updates.

It was pleasing to see 1,400 downloads across the first month – a number that will continue to grow as the App enhances ahead of the 2026 season. For commercial partners, the VAFA App delivers direct access to a highly engaged community audience, premium brand integration, and real-time engagement with users on game day.

AmateurFootballer

The traditional VAFAFootyRecord continued in a digital format throughout the 2025 season, with 23 editions published and available via the VAFA website, newsletter and social channels. The total number of downloads across the season was in excess of 26,000, while the Footy Record archive pages received more than 37,000 views.

The quality of VAFAreporting continued to rise in 2025, with coverage of every senior men’s and women’s section for the first time, plus Holmesglen U19 Premier, featuring weekly reviews & previews, feature articles and the ever-popular teams of the year – all published in the Amateur Footballer, on the Website and now the App also. We sincerely thank the dedication of our volunteer reporters during the 2025 season: Paddy Grindlay, Harrison McIlwaine, Raj Johnston, Lincoln Tracy, Nick Quinlan, Callum Farquhar, Cooper Watkins, Lauren Atkinson, Annie Ireland, Lachie Moir, Elly Kirlis and Sebastian Tehan.

SocialMedia

A primary focus this year was to enhance VAFA’s social media coverage, to engage and connect with the younger generation entering the VAFA competition and increase the reach of VAFA content across an even broader audience. To help achieve that, we contracted Dylan Humphries as our Social Media Growth Coordinator prior to the commencement of the 2025 season. Dylan founded Cench Footy, producing AFL content across various platforms including Instagram (267k followers) and TikTok (7k followers). Dylan successfully drove content throughout the season that covered all sections of the VAFA competition, from regular weekly content to highlights and special features including Whitefriars U19’s first win in their last game of the year; Richmond Centrals Jake Dillon ‘Ton Watch’; and Ormond’s 16 consecutive win’s club record.

There was a significant increase in the number of Instagram posts across VAFAHQ (163%) and VAFAWomens (110%) with the total number of posts across both accounts rising from 390 in 2024 to 1,218 in 2025 throughout the season. There has also been a sharp increase of content across TikTok, Facebook and X. This has seen our total Instagram followers increase from 13,990 in 2024 to 19,393 in 2025 between both VAFA accounts and our new Tik Tok account securing 1,300 followers and generating 39,200 likes to date. In the last 90 days of the season alone, VAFAHQ content amassed 9.8 million views on Instagram.

LiveStreaming&VAFATV

As per recent years, every match of William Buck Premier Men’s & Women’s, Premier B & Premier C Men’s, and all Grand Finals were filmed & available on-demand on VAFA TV. Throughout the season, we filmed and/or live-streamed a total of 556 matches, with a significant increase in live streams. Every Old Xaverians and Old Scotch William Buck Premier Men’s match was streamed live, along with all Premier Men’s, Premier Women’s, and Under 19 Holmesglen Premier finals, the Premier B Men’s and Premier C Men’s Grand Finals, and all four Big V matches across rep weekend.

Having renewed a two-year agreement with production partner My Sport Live, the next strategic step in our growth plan was to introduce new on-screen graphics, enabling clubs to easily

monetise their coverage on-screen as a complement to existing verbal club sponsor credits. This will continue to be a key part of our expansion plan, generating a new income stream for clubs through broadcast sponsorships during their live streams.

VAFA Media also introduced a ‘Showcase Round’ for Premier Men’s (Round 3) and Premier B Men’s (Round 16), where all five matches were streamed live simultaneously for the first time in the competition’s history. This gave fans the opportunity to experience the VAFA ‘Megawall,’ allowing viewers watch all games simultaneously. Big V Saturday and the William Buck Premier Men’s Grand Final showcased notable improvements in production quality, with 8-camera setups and on-camera hosting for the Pre-Game and Half-Time Shows, as we keep finding efficient ways to boost our on-air offerings without raising the production budget. The result was significant viewership across both properties, with our Big V weekend generating over 2000 hours of viewing across four games, while the Premier Men’s Grand Final saw a significant audience increase.

Fifty matches were live-streamed on KommunityTV via the Herald Sun website, with more than 15,000 streams and 2812 hours watched over the season. In total, over 266,000 views of VAFA matches were watched live or on-demand throughout the season, which is a testament to our dedicated, hardworking on-air talent and crews, who consistently go above and beyond each weekend to deliver a top-quality product for community football. Our on-air team is as good as any in community football, and we were fortunate to retain most of our key talent from 2024, while also welcoming a talented group of newcomers, including two-time Elsternwick premiership coach Hugo Higginbotham as our main special comments analyst. Other debutantes this season included Jordan Moll, Nick Robins, Vincent Van Oorschot, Kael Pennuto, Dom Cugno, Pat Cortazzo, Kirra Johnston, Marnee Silver, Ally Kirkwood, Cooper Watkins, Harrison McIlwaine, Lincoln Tracy, Elly Kirlis, and Adem Savran, along with former premiership coaches Luke Mahoney and Daniel Ward, who both joined our call team for the finals and added plenty of depth to our analysis. We take pride in the training and development program at VAFA Media, which offers newcomers the opportunity to gain essential on-air hours and enhance their preparation and on-air skills while working alongside experienced performers who provide valuable real-time support and mentorship.

Media and Broadcast

Radio

Our award-winning VAFA William Buck SEN Match of the Day broadcasts went to another level in 2025. Twenty-three matches, including all William Buck Premier Men’s games and the Premier C Grand Final, were streamed on the SEN App, SEN.com.au and VAFA.com.au throughout the season, with over 6,500 streams - a 30% increase on 2024. Broadcasts were also accessible on demand through our podcast platforms for clubs and players to enjoy at their convenience.

The second season of our SEN partnership continued to increase our visibility in mainstream media, with nearly 300 radio ads broadcast throughout the season on SEN 1116 and SEN Track, promoting our VAFA coverage and the League more broadly. Big V Coach Daniel Harford and Old Brighton captain Harry Hill appeared live on-air in the afternoon timeslot to promote Big V weekend and the William Buck Premier Men’s Grand Final, respectively.

Podcasts

VAFA Media Podcasts exploded in 2025, registering a 352.9% increase in listens from 2024, aided by a wider distribution including the Footy Live App. The 2025 figure of 48,965 is over 50% of total listens from the previous seven years combined. The biggest growth came from the long-standing official weekly VAFA podcast – FORTHELOVEOFTHEGAME – with Jason Bennett and Paddy Grindlay joined by Matthew Donald in 2025. While the deep dives into Premier Men’s action each week reached new heights, the detailed focus on the balance of the competition also expanded significantly, with comprehensive coverage of every senior section throughout the year. The result was 36,307 listens across 26 episodes – an increase of 473% on 2024.

VAFA Media also launched a limited-series short-form podcast called INSIDETHEVAFA, which interviewed senior VAFA management about key issues affecting clubs and explained in detail the reasoning and process behind initiatives such as fixturing, re-grading, the Player Points System, and The Real Stakes gambling harm awareness program. The success of this series demonstrated that it is an effective way to communicate with clubland, and the series will return in 2026. The BIGV PODCAST ran as a limited series building up to – and reviewing - Rep Footy weekend in 2025, as we celebrated the Big V’s

Centenary. The VAFAAWARDSSHOW again proved popular, featuring interviews with 15 League Best & Fairest winners, offering excellent coverage across the competitions in an engaging, fast-paced production that was simulcast on YouTube and our podcast platforms.

A key goal of VAFA Media continues to be the distribution of VAFA Media – spreading it as far and wide as possible to reach the biggest audience possible. Coverage in the HeraldSun –both online and print – was outstanding once again in 2025 and we especially thank Brayden May for his hard work throughout the year. VAFA content was again published on the popular Footy LiveApp, with 135 articles attracting 138,573 views, representing a 204% increase from last year, and more than 100,000 article views were posted on the SENAppandwebsite, representing an astonishing 900% growth from 2024.

Overall, 2025 was a pivotal year for VAFA Media, highlighting the effectiveness of linking content with social media channels. The success of our integrated strategy is evident across all our metrics and lays a strong foundation for ongoing growth in 2026.

Clubs & Community

2025

The Association was pleased to welcome Darren Flanigan (late January), who brings over 30 years of outstanding experience in Australian Rules football. Throughout the season, Darren worked closely with Pranav, supporting VAFA clubs across multiple areas and driving several community and club development initiatives that had a positive impact across the competition. Mid-season, Claire Castele, our Wellbeing Project Manager overseeing The Real Stake (Gambling Harm Reduction) program, completed her contract after successfully achieving all project targets and delivering meaningful outcomes for clubs involved in the program.

VAFA Club Conference

The year began with the VAFA Club Conference, which brought together over 120 club administrators at Holmesglen Chadstone in the first week of February. The Conference offered committee members valuable insights from the Club Support, Football Operations, and Commercial teams, highlighting the range of services, products, and resources available to VAFA clubs in 2025. The VAFA extends its sincere thanks to Tackle Your Feelings, AFL Victoria, First Aid Management, and all VAFA commercial partners for their valuable contributions and participation in making the Conference a success.

The year also marked the sixth year of the Tackle Your Feelings partnership, with a record 920+ VAFA players and coaches completing the Mental Health Education workshops. “ ”

Player Assistance Program

The VAFA Player Assistance Program (PAP), a first-of-its-kind initiative in community sport marked its first anniversary since being introduced in mid-2024. The program provides all VAFA players with free access to mental health services, including counselling, through the Association’s partnership with Converge International. Funded by a portion of the annual $11 player registration fee, the PAP was expanded in 2025 to include VAFA umpires, supporting their mental health and wellbeing. To date, several individuals have accessed the program. This ongoing initiative is one the VAFA is extremely proud of, with plans to extend access to coaches and VAFA volunteers in the near future.

Community Partnerships

In 2025, the VAFA continued its strong partnerships with longterm community partners Tackle Your Feelings, BCNA, TAC and First Aid Management. The Association also welcomed a new partnership, The Real Stakes, supported by the Australian Government through the Strong and Resilient Communities (SARC) Activity Grant. This initiative aimed to engage and educate local communities about the risks of gambling and how to identify and address gambling-related harm.

Launched in February 2025, the program reached 208 clubs across the VAFA, Perth Football League, and Adelaide Footy League, engaging over 40,000 players, coaches, and volunteers through 15 in-person workshops and nine webinars led by lived experience experts, supported by educational resources and specialized training.

The year also marked the sixth year of the Tackle Your Feelings partnership, with a record 920+ VAFA players and coaches completing the Mental Health Education workshops. A major highlight was the visit of TYF Ambassadors Nathan Buckley, Dylan Buckley, and Ellie Blackburn to Aquinas FC, Prahran FC, and Port Melbourne Chargers Women’s FC during their Thursday night training sessions. Many clubs also extended their participation by undertaking the new elective topic on Anxiety, further strengthening mental health awareness and support within their club environments.

Club Support

With a dedicated Community & Club Support Department comprising two full-time staff members, the VAFA maintained a strong focus on club development and growth throughout 2025. This was achieved through consistent engagement with clubs across multiple touchpoints particularly via face-to-face meetings and regular communication through phone calls and a weekly email.

In addition to these interactions, the department provided a range of support services, including coach development opportunities, grant and fundraising assistance, operational support, and access to a suite of online resources and digital tools.

As in previous years, clubs were invited to complete the 2025 VAFA Club Health Check & Engagement Survey, with tailored Club Support Reports developed for each club to identify key focus areas for the 2026 season.

Coach Development

In 2025, the VAFA, in partnership with AFL Victoria, delivered a Coach induction workshop and a specialized Women’s Coaching Academy induction workshop mid-season. Over 35 coaches attended, engaging in curriculum that covered essential coaching concepts such as developing coaching philosophies, creating effective training and match-day plans, mastering communication skills, and upholding key coaching values. In 2025, the Women’s Coaching Academy participants received fully funded access to the Elevate Coaching Course (formerly Level 2), ensuring a highquality development experience at no cost to the coaches. As part of the Academy program, each participant was also aligned with a Coates Talent League club, providing real-time coaching exposure and hands-on experience at elite junior level to support their development. Fourteen coaches representing ten different clubs took part, gaining valuable knowledge, practical tools, and renewed confidence to bring back to their teams.

Additionally, Darren Flanigan conducted 40 football-related sessions on behalf of the VAFA. A total of over 400 coaches and players were involved in a range of different activities. The activities ranged from club leadership programs, 1 on 1 coaching advice, whole of club coach education, match day coaching analysis, skills and drill based sessions as well as attending and assisting club coaches with training sessions.

Post season coach reviews, preseason planning sessions and 1 on 1 coaching advice sessions for 2026 are taking place now with club education and club training help already in the calendar.

Grants & Fundraising

In 2025, VAFA clubs pursued various revenue-generating opportunities to support their programs. Key initiatives included the Telstra Country Footy Grant, TAC Club Rewards Program, and Good for Footy Raffle.

The Telstra Country Footy Grant aimed to enhance club safety and reduce volunteer workload, awarding $54,593.10 to 27 clubs. Funds supported projects such as goal netting, inclusive guernseys, defibrillators, CALD participation, volunteer training etc. This year, changes in funding allocation prioritized smaller projects to assist more clubs across Victoria.

The Good for Footy Raffle was a significant fundraising avenue, with 56 clubs raising a combined $88,755. All proceeds directly

Clubs & Community

benefited the participating clubs. Within the VAFA, Mazenod OCFC and Fitzroy FC stood out, raising $37,210 and $10,375, respectively. This year marked the highest participation rate, showcasing increased club engagement as compared to previous years.

This year, 39 clubs were successful in the TAC Club Rewards Program for actively promoting road safety during the TAC Road Safety Round. The program offers up to $10,000 in funding per club. Throughout July and August, participating clubs shared impactful road-safety messages, videos, and images across their social media platforms. In total, $75,250 funds were distributed to VAFA clubs, with the top recipients being Fitzroy FC ($6,000), Ormond Amateur FC ($6,000), and Melbourne Cricket Club FC ($5,000).

Additionally, in 2025, clubs benefited from another fundraising opportunity through the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS). AFL

April

Victoria and CDS Vic have partnered through to 2027, allowing clubs to collect eligible cans and earn 10 cents per item. A total of 29 VAFA clubs registered for the program, with many actively raising funds to support specific projects such as purchasing footballs, equipment, and jumpers for the upcoming season.

Recognition Awards

In 2025, the VAFA continued to celebrate the contributions of volunteers, coaches, trainers, and clubs through its annual awards program, including the Carruthers Executive Coach of the Month & Year, PASS Volunteer of the Month & Year, Club Connect Club of the Month, and the Victor Sports Trainer of the Year awards.

Throughout the year, the VAFA received numerous nominations across coaching, volunteer, and trainer categories. The winners of the 2025 awards are highlighted below.
