Letter from the president Dear Friends, In my first year as President and CEO of your United Way I am in awe of the commitment this community makes to improve lives through United Way. I’ve observed generosity and compassion like I’ve never seen before and now I know why they say that the Roanoke Valley is a community that truly cares.

Over the last 91 years, United Way of Roanoke Valley has cared for hundreds of thousands of children, families and individuals, providing each with the opportunity for a stable, successful life. Last year, with your support, we were able to help nearly 22,000 people across the Roanoke Valley send their children to quality, affordable childcare programs; build knowledge and skills for employment, gain job training and financial management skills; and access affordable healthcare services that their families so desperately need.

Your United Way believes what Robert Ingersoll so eloquently stated, “We rise by lifting others.” Through your support of families’ education, income and health, local children are entering school ready to learn. These kids will go on to be teenagers who will focus on their education and stay on the path to graduation. The same students will go on and become financially stable adults who give back for generations to come. Together, with your help, we can help lift the Roanoke Valley for years to come.

Virginia Infant Toddler Specialist Network United Way has expanded our early childhood focus on infant and toddler care by increasing capacity to include the Piedmont Region’s Infant Toddler Specialist. FamilyWize reaches $9M total savings Through the FamilyWize partnership United Way and local pharmacies have saved Roanoke Valley residents over 9 million dollars within the last seven years on their prescription medications. FamilyWize savings cards immediately lower the cost of medicine by an average of 42 percent and potentially more for people without insurance. These savings keep local families from having to choose between putting food on the table and taking their critical prescription medications.

Community Impact Council The Community Impact Council, supported by a large number of community volunteers, is responsible for implementing United Way’s Community Action Plan around education, income, and health. They lead our Community Investment Process, a data-driven review process that identifies programs with strong collaboration and outcome measurements to achieve community goals.

Mental Health First Aid Training The Healthy Roanoke Valley Mental Health Action Team hosted a Mental Health First Aid training for 50 of its partners to equip laypersons with the skills needed to help people who find themselves with a mental illness or crisis. This training allowed participants to grow their knowledge of signs, symptoms and risk factors of mental illnesses and addictions and to identify resources to help meet these needs.

Community Health Needs Assessment Healthy Roanoke Valley partnered with Carilion Clinic to conduct the 2015 Roanoke Valley Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). As a follow up to the previous needs assessment, this update will allow us to evaluate the past three years’ success and establish a framework to improve the health of the Roanoke Valley.

early education outcome tracking Through the partnership with Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute and Roanoke City Public Schools, United Way is working to track how students perform in school based on the support they receive before entering school. Bank On Roanoke Valley goal update Surpassing its 2-year goal in only 12 months, Bank On efforts have helped people open 1,075 low-or-no-cost checking and saving accounts at partnering financial institutions. Bank On also hosted 35 public classes at local libraries and five private series to build financial skills for adults and families. These individuals are now able to better meet their basic needs, respond to emergencies and save for the future.

In January 2015, United Way of Roanoke Valley had the honor of hosting a meeting convened by United States Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy as a part of his nationwide listening tour. Dr. Murthy met with a select group of 15 leaders from Alleghany, Rockbridge, Franklin, Patrick, Martinsville, and the Roanoke and New River Valleys to hear first-hand about local health challenges and how communities were responding and collaborating to address them.
