UBUD WRITERS & READERS FESTIVAL

11 - 15 OCTOBER 2013

THROUGH DARKNESS TO LIGHT

WELCOME I am thrilled to be celebrating our ten year anniversary, and am proud that the dedication and hard work of my team has created one of Indonesia’s greatest and most inspiring cultural events. Bravo! This year the Festival ‘comes home’, turning its focus to Bali and Indonesia. Our 2013 theme, Through Darkness to Light, Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang, takes us full circle back to our first theme and honours women’s rights pioneer R.A Kartini, women and their extraordinary achievements, visionaries and our fragile planet. We also pay respect to our closest neighbour – and my home country – Australia, as well as our extended Asian family. Our identity lies in this part of the world, and our rich and diverse program reflects the importance of these relationships. Taman Baca, our new open-air garden venue next to Left Bank, will be a hub of food stalls, performances and twilight music. Also at Taman Baca is The Kitchen – with a daily mini food festival of cooking demonstrations – and Rumah Baca, a Javanese-style wooden joglo house and the venue for more intimate gatherings and readings. 2013 saw a number of changes at the UWRF. Summa Durie, International Program Manager, has excelled in her new role, and Marketing Manager Madeleine Smith became a cherished member of the team. We also welcomed our hilarious new Graphic Designer, Sathya, super-efficient Administrative Assistant, Erma,Children & Youth Program Coordinator, Pandu and Production Officer, Pasek. At this 10-year anniversary, I also say a special thank you to our irreplaceable Community Development Manager, Kadek Purnami, who has been with the team since the very beginning. To all the staff, well done and thank you! I am also extremely proud that in 2013 the UWRF launched a literary prize, Long Way Home, in partnership with the Asia-Europe Foundation. The two winners will be officially presented at Blanco Museum during the Festival. Our line-up of Indonesian authors is greater than ever and our Satellite Program, held in cities around Indonesia, is growing in leaps and bounds. Women of Letters, co-presented by Marieke Hardy and Michaela McGuire, will journey to Yogyakarta and Jakarta before returning to the Festival. It is collaborations of this nature that I particularly love.

The discussions, performances, film screenings, literary feasts and workshops that are the hallmark of the UWRF will once again be held in more than 50 venues around Ubud – and there will be a few surprises thrown in to keep you on your toes.

OM asato ma sad gamaya tamaso ma joytir gamaya metyor ma amrytham gamaya.

I wish our esteemed authors and our devoted readers a warm welcome to this year’s grand event and hope you enjoy the spirit of the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, the charm of Ubud and the magnificence of Indonesia.

OM Shanti Shanti Shanti.

Selamat menikmati!

2013 UBUD WRITERS 2013 UWRF & READERS | MAIN PROGRAM FESTIVAL | 1

Welcome From Our Patrons Every year it is both an honor and a pleasure to welcome all of you attending the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, and it is particularly so this year, on the Festival’s tenth anniversary. How far the Festival has progressed from a decade ago, when its Founder and Director Janet DeNeefe had the amazing idea to create an event to bring together international and local writers to share their experiences with a world-wide community of literary-minded people. The aim was to stimulate the local economy, so badly shattered after the Bali bombing. Janet’s dreams have manifested in an extraordinary way. Not only has the Festival attracted thousands of visitors here to Ubud, stimulating the local economy in ways that could not have been imagined all those years ago. Even more significantly, it has created one of the world’s most important literary events, attended by some of the bestknown international and local writers and scores of literary devotees. To the writers participating in this year’s Festival, I say thank you for the time and effort expended to be with us. To the visitors—many of whom are regular attendees—I say thank you for your support. To Janet, International Program Manager Summa Durie, and to all of the extraordinary team of devoted and talented UWRF staff and helpers, thank you for once again bringing to us all this amazing Festival that presents such a wonderful kaleidoscope of literature from all parts of the world, and particularly from our own country, Indonesia. Then, settle-in with a picnic blanket to watch an exclusive preview of Daniel Ziv’s new film JALANAN. JALANAN follows them to their distant home villages & traces their elusive quest for identity & love in an adopted city overrun by the effects of globalization & corruption. A powerful soundtrack of the musicians’ original compositions drives the film. Stepping from the screen to the stage Boni, Ho & Titi will bring some of the film’s music to life & will join a jam session with world musicians Susu Ibu (indonesian/Chilean/ US). Joining the celebration is ARIA Award-winner Clare Bowditch (Australia), Tommy Spender (Australia) and Yeshe Reiners (Germany). Setio and his wife Siti run a pottery business in a small village where Ludiro, a powerful & ruthless butcher, controls all the trading activities. BEHIND BEING: SHORT PREVIEW Behind Being follows a young filmmaker’s explorations of the mysterious and rich world of traditional music, dance and ceremony alive in Indonesia. Observing an empowerment in the people, the filmmaker sought to learn more by interviewing community members who are keeping the culture alive, such as a master mask-carver and a musician fusing Javanese tradition with hiphop. These community members share deep-rooted insights as an inspiring reminder of what it means to be human in this critical time in history.

TUESDAY 15 OCTOBER BOLLERO 5:00pm - 6:30pm

UWRF ANNUAL BILINGUAL ANTHOLOGY & BACK TO UBUD ANTHOLOGY Since 2008, UWRF and Hivos have published five anthologies: Reasons for Harmony (2008), Compassion and Solidarity (2009), Unity in Diversity (2010), Cultivate the Land Within (2011), and Voices of the Archipelago (2012) as part of its commitment to promote Indonesian emerging authors to Englishspeaking countries. The anthologies featured selected works of emerging Indonesian writers, who were invited and sponsored to attend the Festival after passing the selection process. This year more than 600 writers from 70 cities in Indonesia participated in the selection process and 16 have been selected to attend the Festival. Their works were translated by a team of passionate experts, who have lent their generous support since the beginning of the program. The new anthology is available during the Festival and copies will be sent to libraries and literary communities here and abroad. This year’s Festival will also see the launch of Back to Ubud, an anthology of new works by Indonesian writers invited to 2011 UWRF. The project was initiated by prolific writer and former member of the Festival’s curatorial board, Saut Poltak Tambunan. Some of the featured works are influenced by the experiences these authors had during their stay in Ubud as well as their interaction with their fellow Indonesian and foreign authors throughout the Festival. This anthology is expected to stimulate the birth of other anthologies by other Indonesian writers who have attended this fabulous festival.

INSPECTOR SINGH INVESTIGATES: A CALAMITOUS CHINESE KILLING

KARTINI: THE COLLECTED WRITINGS 1898-1904

Inspector Singh is on a mission to China, against his better judgment. The son of a bigwig at the Singapore Embassy has been bludgeoned to death in a back alley in Beijing. The Chinese security insist that he was the victim of a robbery gone wrong, but the young man’s mother demands that Singapore’s finest (in his own opinion, anyway) rides to the rescue. But solving a murder in a country that practices socialism ‘with Chinese characteristics’ is a dangerous business, & it soon becomes apparent that getting to the bottom of this calamitous killing will be his toughest case yet...

BONES OF THE DARK MOON & RENDITIONS OF MY SOUL

THREE MONKEYS | 4:00pm - 5:30pm

MY SINGAPORE LOVER by Judy Chapman

Bones of the Dark Moon by Richard Lewis Renditions of My Soul by Desak Yoni Published by Saritasku Editions, Bali

A modern love story set against the heat of a thriving Asia metropolis, My Singapore Lover is the story of Sara, a newly arrived expat, who unexpectedly finds herself seduced by the beauty, power & exoticism of the East – & embroiled in a forbidden affair with a magnetic hotelier. Told mostly from a luxury hotel suite, My Singapore Lover explores the challenges of retaining one’s grace within a corporate structure & the consequences of not listening to one’s inner voice.

‘Bones of the Dark Moon is a novel that manages to free itself from its own version of Indonesian frightful past. It is rich with close-ups of regrets, fear, sadness, & moments of happiness. It allows the quiet force of ambiguity to play. At the end, the human survives the crushing strides of political history.’ – Goenawan Mohamad Richard Lewis was born and raised in Bali, as the son of American missionaries. Richard was a nine-year old boy living in Klungkung when the Gestapu massacres of 1965 took place, around which he has based this novel. He now lives in Bali with his wife and family, dedicating his time to writing, surfing and researching further novels. ‘Renditions of My Soul is a fictional memoir that grew into a novel: ‘A wonderful antidote to the consumer driven fantasies of Bali as paradise by revealing how tough life is for most Balinese. Madé escaped, survived & wrote her remarkable story, as few Balinese women would dare.’ – Professor Mark Hobart, UK Desak Yoni returned to Bali after years abroad, on a mission to achieve a better quality of life and rebuild her family, Desak experienced at first hand the multiple challenges facing Balinese women in struggling for balance in a patriarchal world. This book is her first novel.
