Dear Friends, A 25th Anniversary for any organization is a blessed milestone and a time of reflection. UWIDEF is humbled and happy to have had the opportunity to serve the UWI community during this period. In this newsletter, we are pleased to share with you what we have been up to and what we plan to undertake in the near future, under our theme “25 years…Changing lives…Building for the future” Over the years, UWIDEF has disbursed over $290 Million to fund projects, renovate buildings and to provide research grants, scholarships and new equipment. Having done this, one of our objectives this year is to increase our support. With this as our focus, we launched a “25 for 25 Campaign” by inviting the private sector to assist us to increase our scholarship offerings by at least 25%. In this regard, we have received encouraging support from small, medium and large firms ranging from donations of $5,000 to $250,000. We have also pursued a renewed invitation to join our Century Club. This has attracted donations of $ 1million each from large corporations. We are truly grateful for each and every gift!

ABOUT UWIDEF

UWIDEF is delighted to have been able to provide additional scholarship offerings this year. In addition, we have donated thirty million ($30 Million)to the UWI Solutions for Developing Countries (UWI SODECO) to enable the refurbishing of a building to house SODECO’s clinical operations. With this additional contribution, UWIDEF has contributed a total of $90 Million to a facility which provides vital research in the areas of diabetes, hypertension and stroke.

Since its incorporation in 1990, UWIDEF at Mona has implemented a number of major projects; provided grants and scholarships for both undergraduate studies and post graduate research; and established various facilities for students.

We thank you for your support over the years. We hope you enjoy this issue.

The UWIDEF-Mona brokers, builds and sustains relationships with UWI Mona’s friends. It provides stewardship for funds raised through major capital campaigns and projects, general endowment and planned giving.

The UWI Development and Endowment Fund (UWIDEF) on Thursday May 21, 2015, provided further support to the UWI Solutions for Developing Countries (UWI SODECO) through an additional Thirty Million Dollars ($30 Million). This brings the total contribution, to SODECO by UWIDEF, to Ninety Million Dollars ($90 Million) following the initial Sixty Million dollars ($60 Million) at the start up in 2010. The current contribution will be made to the UWI for the refurbishing of a building on the UWI Hospital grounds to house the UWI SODECO’s clinical operations. This will be commence with an initial disbursement of Ten Million Dollars. The UWI SODECO was established to seek solutions to a number of health care issues which affect countries of the developing world. Led by Chief Scientist Prof Terrence Forrester, it is a part of a global network of research centres with other collaborating locations being the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit UWI, and centres at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, the University of London, the University of Maryland in the USA, Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, Loyola University in Chicago, the University of Cape Town in South Africa and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana. The primary focus of the research team is to identify underlying basis of obesity, hypertension and diabetes in the poor population with an intergenerational history of under-nutrition. Chairman of the UWIDEF The Hon. Dennis Lalor stated that “in this the 25th year of the founding of the UWIDEF, this is an important element of the what the organisation does. Our primary mandate is to provide funding for major infrastructure projects, scholarships and the provision of research grants for UWI Mona.” He emphasised that “this a key element of where Town meets Gown, as it is the funding provided by donors to the UWDEF that has facilitated this important academic research”. Prof Forrester stressed indicated that “UWI SODECO’s work will have a significantly positive impact on the populations as the research provides answers to issues to affect large segments across the region, Sub-Saharan Africa, India and China. It is important that collaborations such as these be developed to ensure that we are able to continue our work”. He continued “UWIDEF’s support since inception has been invaluable and has ensured that we are now at this stage and looking to go further”.

UWI MONA ALUMNI WHO SHINE Public Relations and Sponsorship Manager at Sagicor Jamaica, television presenter and producer with CVM TV, owner of The Marvellous Wedding; it seems Mrs. Alysia Moulton-White has done it all! Before her time with Sagicor Alysia made good use of her Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication from CARIMAC as producer and presenter at CVM Television Jamaica. For nine years she produced special television features and series, documentaries, commercials and live broadcasts while hosting and co-producing the popular morning magazine programme CVM at Sunrise. Though she loved working on television, she was glad to have the opportunity to live her dream and do more with her creativity while indulging her passion for marketing at Sagicor Jamaica. As a part of the Group Marketing team at Sagicor Jamaica for the last four years, Alysia ensures that the Jamaican populace is fully aware of the wide range of products and services of Sagicor via a dynamic, cutting-edge and innovative marketing approach. Her direct responsibilities encompass the co-ordination of all special projects, sponsorships and events, including the prominent Sigma Corporate Run. While Alysia did her Master’s degree in International Communications and Development at City University, London, England she received her foundation right here in Jamaica at the University of the West Indies, Mona and is quite pleased she did.

“UWI was amazing! I loved it. I particularly enjoyed the many cultural activities I was exposed to like lunch hour concerts, dance classes, guest lectures, UCCF and sporting activities.” At Meadowbrook High, Alysia was very involved in several extracurricular activities and was worried that going to University

would mean she would be stuck behind a book the whole time. Sure enough this mindset was changed from the beginning of the first semester at UWI, as her university life proved just as active. She related that one of her most memorable experiences at UWI was its unconventional approach to learning. “I remember in my final year at UWI, my International Relations professor decided to take us to Portland for the 7

weekend where we presented our final projects. That weekend was fabulous…I learned a lot more in that atmosphere.” When asked what advice she would give to any student contemplating pursuing a degree at UWI today Alysia said, “Learn as much as you can from as many people as you can. Your professors, other peoples’ professors, the vendors, other students. Watch, listen and learn. University life is not felt only in a large lecture theatre. Find people who are doing what you dream of doing and understudy them and how they execute their craft.” Outside of her very full work environment Alysia owns her own wedding planning business, The Marvellous Wedding and founded a self-esteem development programme for young girls called the Marvellous Project. Through the Marvellous Project Alysia speaks at schools and creates special events for girls to encourage them to live their dreams and be the amazing person God created them to be. She shared, “If you’re wondering why I love the word marvellous so much, it’s because my favourite verse in the bible is Psalm 139:14,”... Marvellous are your works and that my soul knows very well.”” Alysia, who is the mother of two beautiful girls, Amaris and Nyla, keeps active by dancing and leading the dance ministry at Church on the Rock Kingston and works with her husband, Odean White, in leading the youth ministry there.

The UWI Development and Endowment Fund (UWIDEF) has accepted the challenge to restore hope to many students who feel that the tertiary education they aspire to achieve is unattainable. This year, in commemoration of 25 years of service, UWIDEF hopes to raise enough funds to increase scholarship offerings by at least 25%. This year the UWIDEF will award nine (9) new bursaries from three scholarships.

• The Spanish-Jamaican Foundation Bursary for Modern Languages - five (5) $50,000 bursaries. • The UWIDEF Bursary for the Performing Arts - two (2) $100,000 bursaries. • The Danielle Hanson Memorial Bursary - two (2) $75,000 bursaries. The Spanish Jamaica Foundation has partnered with the UWIDEF to make available five bursaries to students who are pursuing the study of Spanish at the Mona Campus. The presentation of the the cheque for $250,000 was made during a handinng over ceremony on February 19, 2015. The ceremony took place in the multifunctional room by the Main Library on the Mona Campus and was attended by the Ambassador of Spain to Jamaica His Excellency Aníbal Jiménez Abascal who in his greetings spoke of the warm relations between his country and Jamaica over the years. He also stated that Jamaica’s location necessitated that its people learn Spanish in order to fully benefit from trade within the region. The scholarships will be made available firstly to students from the Parishes where Spanish hotels operate, namely St James, Hanover and St Ann. They may pursue either a major or minor in the Departmment of Modern Languages and Literatures or a combination from other departments. Dr. Rebecca Tortello, Manager, Spanish-Jamaican Foundation explained, “These scholarships not only serve to recognise UWIDEF’s 25th anniversary, but also the launching of a SJF youth ambassador programme “as our scholarship recipients will be considered ambassadors of the Spanish language in Jamaica.” These bursaries will be available as of the 2015/2016 academic year.

HOW TO SET UP A NAMED SCHOLARSHIP

Donating a named scholarship through UWIDEF is an easy 4-step process that is facilitated through our office here on the Mona Campus.

Step 1: Find what option is best for you

There are two options for setting up a named scholarship: 1. Forming an Endowment Fund. The creation of an endowment requires one large investment; the principal of which is held in perpetuity, invested and from which only the return on investment is used for scholarships. 2. Contributing annually – yearly smaller investments Contributing annually as the name suggests will require the donor to make a contribution per year for the life of the scholarship. Once you decide which option is best for you based on preference and available capital we move on to step 2: Developing the Scholarship Criteria.

Step 2: Develop award Criteria

This is an easy process. The donor would indicate their interest and specify some guidelines for the scholarship including area of study, tenure, value and other special criteria or terms for the award. Mentorship, internship or work/study components may be included as a condition of the award. Students receive valuable exposure and work experience while the organizations receive assistance in completing certain tasks.

Step 3: Choosing value of the scholarship

Choosing how much to donate may be very difficult especially with the cost of education rising.

Step 4: Making the award

In this final step, the donor may choose to be included in the scholarship awarding process. That is choosing a recipient from a shortlisted set of candidates by UWI’s Office of Student Financing (OSF).

Tax Exemption

This support includes scholarships, bursaries and grants, research projects, programme development and, structural improvement.

The Friends of the UWI Development and Endowment Fund, is defined by the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) under Section 501(c)(3) as a charitable, nonprofit organization.

students I have taught and hundreds of patients I have had the good fortune to treat. My pride for this Campus is the beauty of the campus. Surrounded by Majestic mountains which we often take for granted. Nestled at the top of Kingston in perfect weather. Beautiful well kept lawns which are now being destroyed in places by ignorance. Of all the majestic trees on Campus the Poui is the most beautiful when in full bloom. I have taken many pictures on Campus and I am most proud of the one displayed the yellow Poui.

I am a proud UWI man ever since I walked onto the campus back in 1973. My love for the campus is more than the three degrees gained, the comradeship of being a Taylorite, Winning Inter Hall football way back in 1975 or Job satisfaction as lecturer, senior lecture Professor and now Dean Faculty of Medicine.

We must maintain the beauty of the campus. We must stop walking across the lawns in ignorance. We must stop the unnecessary pruning of trees all over the place, for no good reason. Get the grounds staff to plant grass and bougainvillea in strategic areas to prevent trampling across the lawn to get the students to stop making paths across the grass and stop people from parking their cars on the lawn. If we can do these simple things all of us will share my pride as we beautify our wonderful campus even more.

It goes beyond the many undergraduate and post graduate Editorial note: In our July 2014 issue we published the image of the Poui tree, which it was later learnt was taken by Prof. Horace Fletcher. We apologise for the error in not acknowledging the photographer and do hope you enjoy the story behind it.
