About the UWI Development and Endowment Fund (UWIDEF) The UWI Development and Endowment Fund Mona (UWIDEF), is the major fundraising arm of the UWI Mona campus and provides stewardship for funds raised through capital campaigns and projects, general endowment and planned giving. When the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies was devastated by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, a small dedicated team of Jamaican businessmen formed the Jamaica Appeal Committee. In one year, they raised enough funds to contribute significantly towards the repair of the buildings so as to keep classes going and the University's teaching hospital functioning. This success was continued through the formation of the UWIDEF On August 20th, 1990, which was registered under the Jamaica Companies Act. The Fund was established with the mandate to assist in raising funds for the development of the University of the West Indies Mona, for the benefit of the public, through increased access to higher education and to assist in advancing the development of Jamaica. Dear Friends, As we close the year marking our 25th Anniversary, we are pleased to have accomplished increased support for the University. In this Newsletter, we review our activities throughout the year and reflect a bit about the past under our theme “25 years of Building for the Future…Changing Lives”. We are truly happy to have been able to provide continued service to the UWI Community. At Christmas we pause to embrace the peace and hope of the Season. In this regard we would like to encourage you to support the Gift of Education Initiative which is highlighted in this issue. If you are a Jamaican returning home for Christmas but resident abroad, we encourage you to make a donation through our Friends of UWIDEF, a charitable 501(c) (3)organization registered in the State of Florida, USA. Your support can also be made by advertising through our MonaView Digital Signage Network. This enables you to advertise your product to Jamaica’s present and future consumers, while supporting UWI. We thank you for your continued support and we wish for you a blessed Holiday Season! Carla Seaga, BA, MPA Executive Director “From you, through us, for all!”

UWI Development and Endowment Fund (UWIDEF) Celebrates

25

years of Service to UWI Mona

This year has been a significant one for UWIDEF as 2015 represents 25 years of service to the University of the West Indies. We embraced this milestone under the theme, “25 years of Building for the Future…Changing Lives”. As the UWI Mona Foundation, our focus this year was to increase our support to the UWI Mona through various campaigns. This included support for scholarships, grants for research and capital improvement. Earlier on this year, UWIDEF’s Chairman hosted A n Evening with the Southern Chorale of Mississippi at the UWI Chapel. Proceeds from this event provided three Performing Arts bursaries valued at $100,000 each for the academic year 2015/2016. The Spanish-Jamaican Foundation donated five (5) bursaries valued at $50,000 each to the Modern Languages Department. This year, UWIDEF was able to award 33 scholarships and bursaries valued at approximately J$4million for the 2015/16 academic year. In addition to scholarship support, UWIDEF was able to donate a further $30 Million to UWI SODECO (Solutions for Developing Countries) for important scientific research on diabetes, hypertension and stroke, which brought the total contribution to SODECO to $90M. The Flow Foundation, through their TOJ Fund, provided $2.5 Million in support to the Cardiology Department at the UHWI, Mona’s teaching hospital. In addition, UWI Mona Alumni, Dr. Stefan Maxwell (Class of 1977) provided a gift of J$6Million in support to the UHWI Paediatrics Department. These two gifts resulted in the hospital receiving J$8.5M, through UWIDEF, in a matter of two months. The United Way of Jamaica also came on board this year providing funds for Food Vouchers for students in need. Throughout the year, UWIDEF maintained two major fundraising campaigns:  The “25 for 25 Scholarship Campaign” - These donations are from individuals and organizations giving gifts of up to $250,000 to help increase scholarship offerings to the campus by 25%  The “Century Club Project” - These gifts are from individuals and organizations making donations of at least $1M (One Million) to UWI Mona. On Tuesday, October 6 UWIDEF celebrated its 25th Anniversary at its Annual Donor Recognition and Awards function held at the Knutsford Court Hotel. This event was held to thank donors who provide support to the UWI through UWIDEF, without whom the work at UWIDEF could not be done. UWIDEF also recognized their longstanding donors who have been contributing over 25years and long serving directors including the Chairman of the Board, the Hon. Dennis Lalor OJ, who has led UWIDEF’s effort for the past 25 years as its Chairman. Since its inception through the generosity of private companies and international grants, UWIDEF is proud to have been able to provide the UWI Mona with support of over J$300million!

This Christmas, change someone’s life... Give the GIFT OF EDUCATION!! “The UWIDEF organization brought to life a word which many of us think little of. That word is DONOR. This word simply refers to a person who gives...so that someone else may live. We, the recipients, are here because someone donated; someone gave us renewed life! I'll never forget UWIDEF. One day, I'll become a donor and it will bring me great joy to help someone like myself ” - Marsha-Gay Lawrence, Scholarship Recipient 2014/2015
