United Way of the Coastal Empire was founded by leaders of this community over 85 years ago and continues to be volunteer-led Our mission is simple: to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community so that all people have the opportunity to reach their full potential and families thrive
United Way has several ways to support the community through impactful initiatives and dedicated funds The Community Fund, along with other specific funds such as the WOMEN UNITED Transportation Fund and the Read United Fund, makes lasting impact across the community. These funds provide vital resources that address immediate needs and promote longterm stability.

This year, the Turkey Trot a local Thanksgiving tradition will bring together nearly 2,000 participants for a family-friendly race event, including a 4-mile course near Daffin Park, a Kids K, and a Diaper Dash. Participants are invited to an award ceremony complete with food, beverages, and family fun. Read United supports year-round programming to improve early childhood literacy across our region. Key initiatives include Read United Day, Read United Buddies, and Summer Reading Programs.
Read United Day (TBD 2026) will reach Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, and Long counties, promoting literacy and a love for reading. Nearly 1,000 United Way volunteers will read to classrooms and leave a new book behind for each class. In Bryan, Effingham, Liberty, and Long counties, every child will receive a new book to take home. In Chatham County, United Way will continue our pilot program in partnership with Live Oak Public Libraries and the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System to incentivize children and families to engage with local public libraries through exciting competitions Students and their families can access the public library, participate in programs, and borrow up to five books at a time In total, your support will benefit more than 20,000 children on Read United Day!
Read United Buddies will continue throughout the 2025-2026 School Year in Chatham County by connecting students with dedicated volunteers who provide direct support through an evidence-based curriculum and shared reading experiences. Your support will help expand this vital program and ensure more children receive the oneon-one resources they need to succeed.
Summer Reading Programs across Bryan, Effingham, and Liberty counties provide children with books to enjoy throughout the summer, fostering a love for reading and learning.
