TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING YOUR MAJOR 1) Do your research There's no surprises awaiting you that you can't manage if you are making an informed choice.

Reading up in the UTS Handbook, talking to students studying your prospective major and accessing resources such as this guide are great ways to inform your decision making and direct your learning in the ways that suit you.

2) Own your choice No matter what majors you choose, make sure the decision is your own. Make sure your final decision is not swayed by friends or family expectations. This way you get to own your successes and failures, making the end result so much more fulfilling and rewarding. Chances are, you will also better enjoy a major had you picked it yourself.

3) Don't be afraid to change your mind There's no shame in changing your mind. You may start the first few units of your major and realise it really isn't for you. If you come to this conclusion, you can keep completed subjects as electives or extend your degree. Either way, it's much more important that you enjoy what you're studying, instead of being miserable in a major you don't like.

ACCOUNTING How does this course build on Accounting AAA and ABS? Accounting AAA and ABS are a summary of the important concepts that are further developed while completing an accounting major. You gain a deeper understanding of the different areas of accounting such as audit and tax and build upon skills that are transferable to a job in the industry.

Students will be confident in understanding accounting information which can be used to make important financial decisions.

What type of content does it cover?

The 8 core subjects covered in an accounting major unpack different areas of the industry. Students cover cost management systems to support an organisations goals and objectives, business combinations which looks at accounting for M&A and tax law which gives an insight into standards surrounding taxable deductions. Additionally, other subjects such as audit look at the financial statements and the ways to identify different issues.

Accounting is stereotypically boring, what makes this major interesting?

General bookkeeping with debits and credits are often tedious at times, however, certain programs used by businesses today including MYOB and Xero help make overseeing the financial statements more interesting and engaging. Additionally, learning how to use these applications which is covered in a number of subjects will be an applicable skill at any job within accounting. It is then the accountant’s job to help in the decision-making process of businesses.

How much is maths and how much is theory?

Certain subjects such as ‘Accounting for Business Combinations’ (ABC) and ‘Cost management Systems’ (CMS) are more heavily weighted towards maths, where tasks involve calculating figures for debit and credits. However, most of the other subjects unpack theory including general accounting standards, laws, concepts, and practical applications.

What employment opportunities does this lead to?

Undertaking an accounting major can lead to opportunities in any of the big four accounting firms including KPMG, Deloitte’s, EY or PwC or potentially any secondtier firms. Starting as an intern, you may be able to secure a graduate role and eventually progress into an associate, manager or partner. Different sectors that you may be able to apply to include audit, tax, advisory or M&A to name a few.

ACCOUNTING CONTINUED ...

What surprised you about the major?

An aspect that surprised me was the broad career opportunities available after completing an accounting major. All types of businesses across the world need accountants and it sets you up to work in a range of industries including advisory, tax, audit and M&A. If you are not entirely sure what major you want to undertake, accounting pairs well with almost every other major and is commonly known as the ‘language of business’.

General thoughts and advice on the major?

Accounting is challenging, arguably one of the most difficult majors and requires extensive time commitments. However, employers appreciate students that achieve high marks in accounting so my key advice would be to consider this major if you are willing to put in the hours of work. It is also highly beneficial to learn the basics well as it sets you up in other subjects later in the degree,

ADVERTISING & MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS How is this different from a marketing major?

While there is some overlap between this major and marketing, the advertising-specific courses place a greater emphasis on creativity and involve less resilience on theory-based memorization and learning.

What type of content does it cover?

The advertising major includes a diverse range of subjects that require you to complete a variety of assessments, encompassing both written work and oral presentations. Collaborative group projects are a common feature of every course, along with extensive reflective writing and group reports.

What employment opportunities does this lead to?

Graduates of this major can explore job opportunities in advertising agencies, media agencies, creative agencies, and creative marketing roles, leveraging the skills and knowledge gained during their studies.

This major is quite specific; will it restrict me too much?

No, this major is not overly restrictive. The courses are designed to allow students to approach assessments with creativity and flexibility, and the skills acquired can be readily applied to other areas of business and life, emphasizing critical thinking and analytical skills.

What surprised you about this major?

I was pleasantly surprised by the hands-on nature of some assignments, where students were given considerable freedom and minimal guidelines to complete certain tasks. For instance, in the 'Advertising Practice' class, we had to create visual and audio advertisements to fulfill a straightforward brief. This level of creative freedom made the assessments engaging and encouraged us to think outside the box.

I wholeheartedly recommend considering the advertising major or sub-major if you're interested in exploring the creative side of business. The courses prioritize practical, hands-on learning over theory, allowing students to approach assessments with creativity.

BUSINESS DATA ANALYTICS The Accounting Department is launching the ‘Business Data Analytics’ major in 2024 and has provided us with the following information: What is this subject actually about?

The BDA major focuses on providing students with knowledge and hands-on experience in using complex data analytics tools to support business decision making. Students will learn programming, data storage, data visualisation, ethics and governance principles and engage in a studio-based capstone.

Is this major mathematics-heavy, or does it balance with theory?

BDA has strong foundations in computer programming – this is different from pure mathematics. Theoretical frameworks are taught to support all practical hands-on knowledge to provide students with principles and guidelines so that they may navigate challenging situations in the workplace that might not have been covered during their university studies. Students will learn at least one programming language and multiple other types of software including Tableau and PowerBI. Why do educators think this major is interesting?

We developed this new major in response to a rapidly growing demand for graduates with both deep business discipline skills and business data analytics skills – information and data is collected at an increasing rate inside companies, and knowing how to analyse and leverage that data for business decision making provides a business with a competitive edge.

Do you need to have any experience in programming to take this major?

No! Learning programming is like learning the structures of another language and it is based around logic. Programming is not the focus of the major – instead the focus is on practical application and analysis – always rooted within the context of business decision making.

BUSINESS LAW Do I have to study law to do this major?

No, when you choose business law as second major or sub major, you have a choice of 2 stream options. Either ‘Law for Business’ (what I do), or ‘Foundations of Law’ stream, where you study what first-year law students only complete in a Bachelor of Law. Business Law's main purpose is to introduce business students to legal issues that impact upon the business sector.

It sounds quite dry, what makes this major interesting?

I have found the content interesting, personally I enjoy engaging in debates surrounding the applications of the law and other concepts within the sphere of business law, as well as being able to apply the law to scenarios that could be in everyday life. It is great to be able to apply critical thinking and consider all perspectives before making a judgement, which is a great skill to have in your professional career.

What type of content does it cover?

The major is designed to provide undergraduate non-law students to a range of disciplines and backgrounds with a fundamental understanding of the Australian legal system. You develop an understanding of aspects of company law and regulations that apply to companies and as consumers. There is also practical content, such as moots in Industrial Labour Law, which is a great way to challenge yourself to present an argument.

What employment opportunities does this lead to?

Business Law can complement a variety of majors. Risk assessment and compliance strategies are developed through class activities, which tie in for Management or HR major students. If you are an Accounting or Finance major student, you can further develop conceptual and analytical skills and an appreciation of the Australian tax system, by studying ‘Taxation law’ or ‘Banking Law’.

What surprised you about this major?

There are so many options to link you to other majors you study or gain an understanding of laws of different business disciplines, whether it is your major to gain an understanding of another discipline. There are also opportunities to explore your own interests in research assessments where you are able to choose your own topic. You can also choose electives based on interests such as Banking Law. General thoughts and advice on the major?

Business Law can be a great major to complement your first major, diversifying your understanding of some the regulations that affect the business industry.

There can be some readings to before class, but it is a manageable amount that you should complete to understand the content covered in class as the readings are often the foundation of the conversation covered in tutorials.

ECONOMICS What's the difference between this major and a degree in Economics?

A Bachelor of Economics is more maths and analytics intensive, with more compulsory economics subjects. It focuses on building analytical and quantitative skills, and is strongly underpinned by economic theory.

The Economics major lets you choose what you would like to learn about, and aims to build your economic skills in a business environment, rather than learn pure economics.

How does this course build on first year Economics?

First-year economics provides you with an introduction to basic economic concepts. The major continues to build on these topics, delving deeper into macroeconomic and microeconomic theories and their application. It also exposes you to some statistical tools used for economic analysis, as well as a focus on economic policy.

What employment opportunities does this lead to?

A solid understanding of the economy and how it functions is extremely useful no matter what career path you choose. This understanding is crucial in many economics-specific jobs (economist, economic analyst, econometrician, policy analyst), or other jobs in a broader range of fields (financial analyst, equity researcher, consultant).

What type of content does it cover?

The core subjects for the economics major are: Economics for Business 2, Introductory Econometrics, Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics and Contemporary Economic Perspectives (capstone). From these subjects, you develop a good understanding of what additional subjects you’d like to take. These range from Game Theory and Behavioural Economics, to Market Design and Economics of the Environment.

What surprised you about this major?

I was surprised by how interlinked all of the subjects are in my economics major.

The theory and concepts taught all build upon each other, which has enriched my understanding of the subject. This interconnectedness has enabled me to approach economic problems with a more holistic perspective, appreciating how changes in one area can affect various aspects of the economy. It has enhanced my ability to analyse real-world economic scenarios and craft well-rounded solutions to complex issues.

General thoughts and advice on the major?

The major and all subjects are very well structured, with most having very similar lecture, tutorials and assessment structures. It is important you keep up to date with the content, as the concepts you learn tend to build upon each other week on week. It’s also highly recommended you complete the homework and attend the tutorials, as it will help consolidate what you learned from the lectures, and is good practice for the final exam. Finally, if you find yourself stuck on anything, don’t be afraid to contact your tutor/lecturer for some help. I have done this many times, and all of the economics faculty staff are always very approachable and willing to assist you.

FINANCE How does this course build on FBF? FBF serves as an introduction to the fundamental technical and theoretical principles in finance, demonstrating how these concepts are applied to real-world financial decision-making challenges. What type of content does it cover?

The finance major contains four core subjects that cover essential theories and universally applicable calculations in the financial sector. During your first year in this major, you will delve into the workings of the financial system, explore the metrics employed for industry analysis, and gain insights into corporate finance and investment planning and analysis. The core subjects are then followed by your three electives and capstone subject (or seven electives if you do an extended major), This second year of the major (third year at uni) is where you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the aspects in finance that interest you the most and align with your career aspirations.

What employment opportunities does this lead to?

The finance major offers a wide variety of career paths for students to pursue.

Students who major in finance will have the choice of developing their expertise in areas such as corporate finance, investment banking, or fintech and that’s just to name a few. The finance electives provide students with the opportunity to learn more about the career paths that interest them, creating a personalised learning experience that caters to each individual’s goals and aspirations.

Do I need to be an expert at Excel or know all Finance jargon to survive?

Whilst having a sound knowledge of Excel will go a long way, students are not expected to already be spreadsheet experts. Instead, core finance subjects such as Financial Metrics will teach students how to use the software effectively. The finance jargon is also not presumed knowledge and will be explained by tutors whenever it is used.

FINANCE CONTINUED ...

How much is maths and how much is theory?

A common misconception is that finance involves a lot of difficult mathematics.

Whilst numbers are most certainly involved, the maths is usually simple and calculated through programs such as Excel. The theory behind the calculations however is much more important for students to understand, as this will enable them to effectively adapt their knowledge to solve other financial problems. For those who do enjoy challenging maths, there are elective subjects that provide this such as Time Series Econometrics. On the other end of the spectrum, subjects such as Ethics in Finance are 100% theory-based.

General thoughts and advice on the major?

As a student who is about to complete their extended major in Finance, I have absolutely no regrets and fully encourage 1st year students to consider choosing this major as well. I found the elective subjects to each be unique and rewarding experiences that have supported my growth and passion in Finance. If I had to give one piece of advice, it would be to also consider the extended major in Finance. With the extended major, you complete 7 elective subjects instead of 3, which means you will gain a greater and more holistic understanding of Finance to support your career aspirations.

What makes this major interesting?

HRM is an interactive major that challenges people to think about holistic HR trends, Keping up with these changes adds an element of excitement, requiring students to stay current with industry advancements and emerging practices, making the HR profession both dynamic and compelling for those pursuing it as a major.

General thoughts and advice on the major?

Be prepared to discuss your opinions and answer questions, HRM often lends itself to class discussions, which will sometimes be based on readings or lectures, aand other times based on your own understanding or thoughts. HRM is a great major for people who like interacting with other people and collaborating, as each subject in the HRM major has group work.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY What is most rewarding about this major?

The IT major teaches practical skills that can apply to a variety of careers. Programming and database management are fundamental in today’s digital age, and mastering them can open numerous doors in the business world.

What type of content does it cover?

The IT major covers a broad range of topics across its 5 core subjects and allows for 3 electives. The basics of databases, networking, and programming are taught, which are complemented by more advanced topics depending on the chosen electives.

What employment opportunities does this lead to?

This major can only be taken as a second major (to pair with your main major).

The IT major can complement any of the business majors, enhancing one’s employability in tech-driven business roles such as IT consultant, business analyst, or systems administrator.

What surprised you about this major?

I didn’t expect to enjoy programming so much. Additionally, the seamless integration and relevance of IT topics with business subjects offered a holistic understanding of modern business operations.

What is most challenging about this major?

Some subjects can require a significant amount of dedication and time. Grasping complex technical concepts and applying them practically can be demanding, but rewarding.

General thoughts and advice on the major?

You get to choose between Programming Fundamentals and Programming 1, with the latter being a more advanced course. While Programming Fundamentals teaches Java, Programming 1 offers both Python and Java. Given Python’s prominence in business applications, it may be advantageous to opt for Programming 1, even if it presents a steeper learning curve. Pushing yourself might be challenging, but the skills gained can be invaluable in the job market.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS What is most rewarding about this major?

I find the most rewarding part of this major is that it broadens your global perspective and helps develop cross-cultural skills. By learning about different business practices, cultures and economies, this major will equip you with a diverse skill set that is valuable in today's global economy.

Moreover, I have grown an appreciation towards the importance of diversity and cultural awareness in the workplace. If you are interested in global issues and how they impact business operations, this major is definitely for you.

What is most challenging about this major?

The most challenging part about this major is the large amount of content. As this course covers a wide array of international business principles you will need to be prepared and well equipped to stay on top of the material. Luckily the course is designed to ease you in and help you build foundational skills to best approach the major.

What type of content does it cover?

This major covers a wide range of topics on an international scale including marketing, strategy, operations, the global economy and transnational management. With the diverse set of electives you can choose from, there is a subject that fits the career path you want to lead. With electives such as International Accounting, Law and Ethics for Managers and International Human Resource Management, this major provides you with the skills for a career in the International Business area.

What employment opportunities does this lead to?

As a result of the diverse subject range, the opportunities are endless when it comes to careers in international business. This major teaches you global skills that will make you more employable for jobs like marketing manager, logistics manager, supply chain manager and procurement manager. Moreover, if you are keen on finance and have set your eyes on investment banking, having an international business background will provide you with the global perspective needed.

What surprised you about this major?

What surprised me most about the degree was the opportunity to travel overseas in the International Management Field Study subject which is a 2-week field study in an overseas country. This is the perfect opportunity to experience another culture and improve your cultural awareness.

General thoughts and advice on the major?

Overall this subject is the perfect opportunity to grow your skills in the global setting and teach you how to excel in the International Business arena. The layout of the major allows you to choose the path you want whilst also providing fundamental skills that will make you an asset to an international team. Some advice I would give is to jump on opportunities whenever they come. Moreover, stay up to date with current events in the global economy and international politics as this will help you get into a global mindset. Most importantly, be a sponge and try to absorb the information being taught as knowledge is power.

MANAGEMENT This sounds quite broad; what does the Management Major focus on?

The management major teaches students the skills required to oversee a team regarding strategy, consulting, operations and innovation. While it sounds broad, this subject gives you a wide range of knowledge that is transferrable to a lot of jobs.

How does this course build upon People and Organisations?

This course builds upon ‘People and Organisations’ by developing theory and content that could only be briefly explored in this subject. It helps to build knowledge beyond the surface level touched earlier in the degree. This major will help students to learn more about different areas of management such as strategy or HR, and much of what you learn is also dependent on the elective you choose.

Is it all theory?

There is quite a lot of theory, group work and written assessments in this major. While there are electives that aren’t theory-heavy the majority of this major is.

What type of content does it cover, e.g. subjects, practical work?

The core subjects introduce you to strategy, operations and organisational management. With the elective subjects, you can branch out and differentiate into the other fields of management such as transnational, Innovation and Human Resources.

What employment opportunities does this lead to?

This major will not get you a job as a manager straight away! Major career opportunities that can stem from this subject include consulting or overseeing supply chains. There are also a lot of jobs in strategy that you could look into.

What surprised you about this major?

I was surprised about how content-heavy this major is, and each week is a different topic building upon the last week's content. It is super important to keep on top of your work in this subject.

General thoughts and advice on the major?

I would suggest you don’t go into this major thinking it is a bludge or something easy that you won’t have to put effort into. There is a lot of content and it is easy to fall behind if you don’t keep up to date. I would suggest this major if you enjoy written and group assessments.

What type of content does it cover?

In the Marketing Major, there is a well-rounded blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on application. Courses like Consumer Behavior, Marketing Research, Integrated Marketing Communications, and Marketing Planning and Strategy serve as the theoretical underpinning and hands-on practice needed to excel in the concluding Capstone subject, Applied Project in Marketing. The Capstone subject is a great way to apply all of the skills and knowledge you have developed in your Marketing Major and apply it to a real business and real life situation.

What surprised you about this major?

Pursuing this major has illuminated the vast and multifaceted nature of marketing for me. It's remarkable how numerous dimensions of marketing often go unnoticed and how intricate layers exist to comprehend, including research, design, and strategic planning. This field demands a deep understanding of specific situations while also fostering an environment that encourages creativity and innovative problem-solving. One of the most pleasant surprises has been the opportunity to collaborate closely with actual companies, such as Nespresso, to address their real-world challenges. Our work has had a tangible impact, actively contributing to their growth and success.

General thoughts and advice on the major?

Before deciding on the Marketing Major, I would advise considering that it heavily emphasises group work. In my own experience, each subject involves many group tasks, often for multiple assignments. Therefore, if you feel you don’t enjoy group work, this is an important factor to take into account when making your choice.
