Welcome to UTS, It’s so exciting to have you join us!
Starting university can be a really difficult time. The same routine that you’ve maintained for the past 13 years of your life has gone out the window. While these changes may seem daunting, the excitement of new opportunities outweighs the fear of the unknown
Upon starting university, I knew no one It felt as if everyone had their own established friend groups and this added to the existing stresses of finding my way around campus, scary lecturers and making friends UTS BSoc, however, helped me in many ways By providing opportunities to have a social life - despite not knowing anyone - I ended up befriending people in all of my classes
Academically, BSoc provides help from students that have already completed the subjects you’re currently studying and I implore you to use these workshops to further your knowledge. Throughout my past years of study at UTS, I have made invaluable connections and have met people through BSoc that I can now consider life-long friends
I wish everyone the same opportunity that I have had in their exciting journey ahead, and wish you the very best!

Find the way you learn best Your first year is important, but it's also the year for you to explore how you best consolidate knowledge I used to believe during lectures I would have to make a note of every word in order to not miss anything - but I ended up not actually listening and missing everything instead The day I decided to watch lectures and separately download/print slides to annotate extra information was an immediate game changer Actively listening and not pausing every twenty seconds to make notes was so useful for my math-based subjects because I maintained my train of thought
Balance is key. While preparation for assignments, exams, and quizzes is an important and a necessary aspect of your uni experience, do not let it consume your life Employers look at a wide range of skills, abilities and qualities - not just the marks! Make sure you are taking enough time out of your day to enjoy the little things you like doing Whether it is going to the gym, meeting friends or doing other hobbies, you will find that downtime is an important part of doing well ActivateUTS has such a large club offering that you'll also be able to easily find a society that shares a common interest
Learn your own time management. Take note of how long it roughly takes each week to prepare for subjects and watch lectures, so that you can plan uni work around your schedule Doing uni work in small consistent blocks of time can be a lot less intimidating than trying to do all work for the week in one day I find that completing small components of challenging assignments or lectures is satisfying, especially when I am able to mark it as completed on a to-do list. Setting little goals can keep you motivated and on track, and avoids leaving assessments to the last minute, so you don't have to neglect any other areas of your life
Build connections with your peers. Your network plays a big role in your career development, and uni is no different. Make friends with like-minded individuals from each of your classes, who you can work with to achieve higher grades. Not only will making new friends promote stronger study habits, but it will make the university experience significantly more enjoyable. Don't be afraid to connect with your tutors and professors on LinkedIn too ending BSoc events is another to make new friends with other dents studying business at UTS, pecially if you go to key events

Most often you'll see a list of textbooks on your subject outline - but note that some are required and others are recommended Textbooks can be really expensive, so what are your options besides purchasing at full price?
Student VIP is the largest second-hand textbook market It is a great way to avoid buying textbooks at full price and gives you the chance to buy your books at a discount rate You can even resell once you're done!
Not being able to buy textbooks should not affect your ability to complete your degree. UTS offers a variety of scholarships to disadvantaged students Most textbooks are also available in the library and can be loaned for a certain period of time.
BSoc has their very own Textbook Exchange on Facebook but there are more on sites like Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace. Just make sure the book doesn't have notes in them as you may need to bring it into the exam
Throughout your studies, you’ll find that most of your subjects have a research component. Whether that will be individual or in a group, submitted in essay format or as a presentation to your tutor, you will need to know how to research information effectively and how to reference correctly to avoid plagiarism.
CAREFUL: Plagiarism is the theft of research and information It carries heavy penalties throughout your degree, whether or not it has been committed with intent Ensure you reference correctly and take the short business course on avoiding plagiarism!

UTS was just the beginning for Monique In the 4 years since graduating as a marketing major, Monique has thrived in her career as a Senior Account Manager at award winning branding agency 'For The People' (FTP) From this, it's clear UTS provided Monique with the foundational and conceptual skills to excel
Applying her learnings to internships at international companies like Christian Louboutin, Monique moved into her first industry role soon after graduation. She started as a Brand Strategist at The Branding Lab, which then propelled her into becoming an Account Manager at Re (M&C Saatchi Group) She also used her rounded knowlege of business, marketing, and brand to found a now-closed passion project for an online word community, 'six words only'
Monique's role at FTP calls on her to understand the world of brand, and strategically manage the creative process to deliver exceptional results for clients Some highlights from her time at For The People include working with Theatre Royal Hobart, Museums of History NSW, and NSW Government to name a few
"I believe my purpose is to help connect creatives and clients on the journey to better design, communication and understanding."
