ERICA SIPES, PIANO

Virginia-based pianist, Erica Sipes, presents a program of music composed by women from around the globe throughout the past 300 years. Along with works by Marianna Martines, Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Germaine Tailleferre, Melanie Bonis, Lili Boulanger, Anna von Schaden, Dora Pejačević, and Madeleine Dring, she’ll share stories and tidbits about these women, many of whom are just now having their music heard by a wider audience thanks to scores finally being made more accessible and to the network of colleagues who have been working together to let these womens’ voices soar.

Erica Sipes, pianist, received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from the Eastman School of Music. She serves as the piano collaborator and practice/performance coach at Radford University and has freelanced as a piano collaborator and coach in Michigan, Idaho, Maine, California, New York, and Virginia. She also served as the music director and pianist at restaurants in San Francisco and in Switzerland. Ms. Sipes regularly works with the Roanoke Symphony and Chorus, Opera Roanoke, and Amici Musicorum.

This past decade Erica has spent much of her time, energy, and passion bringing the music of women into the spotlight. She is a founding member and pianist of the Alma Ensemble, a trio dedicated to performing and commissioning music composed by women. She also launched a YouTube and project in 2020 called Piano Music She Wrote with Canadian pianist and teacher, Sandra Mogensen. which was recently mentioned in the New York Times.

In the summer of 2012 Erica officially launched her own business, Beyond the Notes, which offers coachings, workshops, and practice boot-camps for anyone that could use some help with practicing, performing or sightreading. She has also been a prominent blogger, writing frequently about her views on performing, learning music, and the classical music world in general. Her blog, “Beyond the Notes” has been included as required reading for courses at the Juilliard School in New York City and can be found at http://ericaannsipes.blogspot.com.
