Program Notes
"Bernarda"
A vibrant composition by Colombian composer and euphonium player Camilo Andrés Ayala. "Bernarda" is written in the style of " porro palitiao," a traditional Colombian musical genre characterized by its lively rhythms and dance-like qualities. The piece was originally composed for euphonium and tuba, showcasing both instruments' technical capabilities while celebrating Colombian musical traditions.
The "E e Suite"
A notable work for tuba, composed by Alec Wilder in 1960. This suite is part of Wilder's contributions to the tuba repertoire, which was relatively sparse at the time. The suite is named "E e," a moniker derived from the musical range it spans, from F below the staff to E above it. The work is programmatic, telling the story of an elephant named E e through six movements, each reflecting different aspects of E e's adventures, such as chasing a monkey or taking a dancing lesson.
Brazilian Dance
This piece captures the different styles of Brazilian music such as samba and bossa nova. There are many syncopated rhythms, wide range of dynamics and unique harmonies which help set the vibe of a Brazilian Festival.
Csárdás
Composed in 1904 by Vittorio Monti, is a vibrant and virtuosic piece that has become one of the most beloved works in the classical repertoire. Originally written for violin, mandolin, or piano, this rhapsodical concert piece draws inspiration from the traditional Hungarian folk dance known as the csárdás. The csárdás dance itself originated in Hungary and is characterized by dramatic shifts in tempo—from slow, expressive sections to rapid, energetic passages—reflecting its roots in Hungarian tavern music and lively folk celebrations.
Fantasy
This piece was written during the rococo era which was the transition period between the classical and romantic period. It was originally written for viola and over time adapted by euphonium players. This piece has contrasting mood changes, brilliant runs, and dramatic contrasts.
Fearless
Is a contemporary and expressive work composed specifically for the tuba, showcasing the instrument's lyrical capabilities and dynamic range. Hobson, known for her engaging compositions that often highlight emotional depth and technical versatility, created Fearless to embody a spirit of courage, determination, and resilience. The piece invites performers and listeners alike to reflect on personal strength and the power of overcoming challenges.
