At Commencement in December, graduates ceremonially walked down a Thank You Tunnel lined with their professors. Tears flowed and hugs were exchanged as instructors honored their former students and wished them the best in their next life chapter.

HI!

Hi! I’m Brittany Garcia, a first-generation student studying public health, and I absolutely love being a Roadrunner!

After graduating in 2015 from South Texas High School for Health Professions, I excitedly came to UTSA with the mindset of wanting to help others. I’ve always known that I wanted to change the world, and what better way to do that than by studying public health!

There are so many reasons to love UTSA, but my favorite is the kind of people you encounter here. People at UTSA genuinely care about others and are so passionate when it comes to helping those in need. With the time that I have left here at UTSA, I hope to help push more students to get involved with service projects both locally and globally.

This past spring break, I was able to travel to India and visit the orphanages and schools there. For about five months leading up to the trip, we collected donations like school supplies, backpacks and toys for the children there.

When we finally arrived, it was absolutely priceless to see the looks on those little ones’ faces after spending time with them and giving gifts.

Last summer, I was given the opportunity to also travel to Cusco, Peru and volunteer at some of their medical clinics.

The sick and injured expressed so much gratitude for me being there—it was such a humbling and rewarding experience.

That’s when I truly fell in love with my public health major.

I challenge you to dream big and to passionately throw yourself into your area of study. My advice is to fall in love with your major and find a way to help others through what you’re learning. Get your feet wet in the knowledge your soon-to-be professors will give you, dive into it and splash the world with your mark. Roadrunners aren’t afraid to change the planet both passionately and permanently.

Q&A James Rivera can't wait to get back.

What are your plans after college?

At the end of the fall semester, James returned to Texas after having a once-in-a-lifetime experience interning in Washington, D.C. As a public administration major, this was like a dream come true. James received a scholarship offered by a national nonprofit organization that allowed him to intern for 12 weeks at the capitol with all his expenses paid for. While there, he got a taste of his dream job by working at a congressional office.

I would really love to return to D.C. and work as a full-time congressional staff member and maybe afterwards go to grad school for either a master’s or law degree.

What do you like most about the College of Public Policy?

Any advice for Future Roadrunners who are interested in Public Policy?

Be aware of what’s going on at the local, state and national levels.

It will give you a great conversation piece with your professors. If you have a question, don’t be afraid to ask about it in class, because it gives your fellow Roadrunners a chance to learn something, too.

Criminal Justice Majoring in Criminal Justice will teach you to understand what motivates others to commit crime. Studying criminal justice includes subjects like policing, investigations, forensic science, violent crime, the legal system and victimology.

Making Waves in a Digital Space Every spring, UTSA hosts the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NCCDC) to encourage innovative practices. Cyber Security Where Cyber Calls Home - UTSA is recognized for having the #1 cyber security program in the nation. Our medical researchers operate in state-of-the-art labs, like the Kleberg Microscopy Center, which houses one of the most powerful electron microscopes in the world.

Social Development Decoding Society - At UTSA, social development research seeks to uncover the answers to perplexing problems involving the urban poor, ethnic minorities, non-English speaking populations, and those learning with disabililties.

Biology professor Hyoung-gon Lee is researching how the brain degenerates during Alzheimer’s to find a new way to prevent and treat the illness.

Civil engineering professor Samer Dessouky is researching a thermal energy-harvesting system to convert heat on paved surfaces into electricity that can power street signs.

Professor Carlos Paladini from the College of Sciences is seeking new methods to help people afflicted by drug addiction by manipulating their dopamine levels.

Dear Rowdy, Where would I even start if I wanted to get involved in research?

How Roadrunners can get involved At UTSA, there are many ways to gain hands-on research experience that could help tackle the world’s biggest problems. As early as freshmen year, you can get involved in all kinds of research, whether it’s developing new approaches for stem cell therapy, creating bone scaffolds, examining the nuances of music theory or patenting new technologies.

UTSA has an Office of Undergraduate Research that encourages involvement across every discipline. For information on the university’s current research programs, you can reach the department at research@utsa.edu or visit their website research.utsa.edu/ undergraduate.

Tech Symposium Every semester, dozens of student teams present their projects and ideas for a chance to win cash prizes at a Tech Symposium.

The symposium serves as a snapshot of the university’s discovery ecosystem by showcasing unique projects and research that students have worked on throughout their senior year.

Research Showcase Every spring, hundreds of UTSA students gather to display their research and creative endeavors at the Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry Showcase. This event encourages participation in undergraduate scholarly endeavors from all across the disciplines and offers a unique applied experience, personalized to a student’s interest.

Spotlight STUDENT

EWB President

It all started with a flyer. In 2016, Walter was a UTSA transfer student from Houston who was halfway through his college career. He was studying engineering and looking for ways to get involved at his new university. Through a colorful piece of paper that caught his attention inside the Engineering Building, Walter learned about Engineers Without Borders (EWB).

Engineers Without Borders is a nonprofit humanitarian organization that helps improve the quality of life in developing communities worldwide. Currently, their UTSA chapter is working on a water sustainability project in Peru that will provide clean water to 90 families.

Walter was immediately interested in the water sustainability project because he has family nearby in Honduras and instantly felt a connection to that part of the world.

Last fall, Walter joined as an EWB member and began developing friendships with the officers. In the following semester, he became an officer by serving as the organization’s secretary. At the start of Fall 2017, he was

asked to step in as president.

“I love the people I’ve met at UTSA through the engineering community and organizations I’ve been involved in,” said Walter.

As an introvert, Walter was forced to come out of his shell when he became president of EWB. It’s helped him develop a variety of essential soft skills like writing, researching and public speaking.

“In addition to being a rewarding experience, EWB has also been an incredible opportunity for me.

Getting involved in an organization and becoming a leader has helped develop skills that tie directly into building a resume. It impresses companies looking to hire.”

Orientation is a unique experience designed to welcome you and ensure a successful transition into life as a Roadrunner.

It will help you prepare for your first semester by answering questions on academics, student services, housing and meals, financial aid and much more. Orientation marks your first major step towards becoming a Roadrunner!

No one likes getting vaccinations, but being at risk for Meningococcal Meningitis is even less fun. If you are 21 or younger, you’ll need to submit written proof that you’ve received either the vaccination or a booster dose within the last five years before registering for classes. It’s a state law!

 C OMPLETE HEALTH TREATMENT FORM

Testing Requirements

If you’re 17 or younger, we’ll need a Consent for Treatment form signed and submitted by your parent or guardian.

 REVIEW YOUR TSI STATUS The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state mandate required for all incoming students to be assessed in the areas of reading, writing and math. Unless you’re exempt, you’ll need to take it and report your score to UTSA before Orientation.

 TAKE PLACEMENT EXAMS

(highly recommended)

For many majors (science, technology and math), it’s strongly recommended you take a math and/or chemistry placement exam before registering for classes; engineering majors are required to take the math placement exam to be placed into calculus. Taking a placement exam could allow you to test into a higher prerequisite course for your first semester, which could help you graduate sooner. Placement exams are offered through UTSA Testing Services.

UTSA is dedicated to helping students obtain financial resources to help them achieve their educational goals. To receive financial aid, you must submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at fafsa.ed.gov.
