POLLINATOR Day

MARCH 6, 2024

UTRGV BROWNSVILLE CAMPUS

POLLINATOR GARDEN 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

EVENT OVERVIEW

Pollinators play a vital role in the Rio Grande Valley's vibrant ecosystem, helping to sustain the diverse array of over 1,200 plant species and 300 butterfly and pollinator species found across the region. As a Bee Campus USA-designated institution, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is deeply committed to protecting and promoting pollinator populations through education, research, and community engagement.

Each year, UTRGV proudly hosts its annual Pollinator Day celebration to honor the critical importance of pollinators and raise awareness of the threats they face. The event, organized by the UTRGV Office for Sustainability, takes place at the university's Pollinator Cantina, a vibrant garden space established in 2018 to provide a thriving habitat for local pollinators.

The Pollinator Day festivities bring together the UTRGV community and external partners to showcase their collaborative efforts in pollinator conservation. The program features presentations from experts, educational workshops, and interactive displays that highlight the essential ecosystem services provided by pollinators and the ways in which the university and its stakeholders are working to protect them.

One of the highlights of Pollinator Day is the official proclamation reading by the City of Brownsville, a symbolic gesture that underscores the shared commitment between UTRGV and the local community to safeguard pollinator populations. This collaboration is further exemplified through the participation of various community organizations, who use the event as a platform to share information on topics ranging from health and wellness to food security and environmental sustainability.
