Our Partners

Welcome to Utrecht Summer School I am delighted to present to you the Utrecht Summer School programme for 2019. This year, we will once again be offering a great variety of academic summer courses, to students from all over the world. Besides the courses that have proven to be popular over the years, new courses have been added to our programme. We are pleased that our excellent cooperation with the Hogeschool Utrecht (University of Applied Sciences) and with the HKU (University of the Arts Utrecht) is yet again reflected in a high number of summer courses. This year, we will be working together with a wide selection of partners throughout the Netherlands. Furthermore, we are extremely pleased with the outstanding collaboration with our international partners and the resulting courses not only in Utrecht, but also in several other cities around the world. International students at Utrecht Summer School will certainly find themselves in good company. In 2018, around 4000 students came to Utrecht to participate in one or more of our courses. With over 125 nationalities working and studying closely together, students learn to work in an international environment from the start, which is essential for scientists and professionals in an increasingly globalized world. I hope you will enjoy reading this brochure, which is bound to contain something to your liking. I look forward to seeing you in Utrecht this summer.

With great pleasure I present to you our summer programme of 2019. Thirty-three years ago, in 1987, we started with just one course on Dutch culture. Today we have over two hundred courses in all of the university’s faculties, ranging from bachelor to PhD level. Whether you are a PhD student concerned with medicine, a bachelor student with a keen interest in business, or a student looking to learn the Dutch language and culture; we have a course that suits your needs. Some of our courses contain international components. We work together with Universities in Italy and Germany, with whom we offer unique programmes in art history, culture, history, and business. The Utrecht Summer School ambition is to offer an up-to-date course programme where important economic, social, cultural and political issues are thoroughly studied and discussed. Our courses deal with important contemporary subjects such as the Financial Crisis, Donkey Medicine, European Politics, Game Research, Future Deltas, Neuroscience and many other more. Through our website you can apply and find more information on each course, our social programme and our housing options. Go ahead and have a look at www.utrechtsummerschool.nl.

The Netherlands The Dutch combine history and traditional culture with innovation, modernism and an international orientation. While the Dutch like to emphasize their country’s highly industrialised features, they have not let go of their background. They treasure the many historical buildings and monuments which can be found in the centre of the major Dutch cities, including Utrecht.

4

The Netherlands or Holland? The Netherlands is a kingdom. Its official name is the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It consists of the Netherlands together with the Caribbean islands: Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten. The country’s name in Dutch is Nederland, meaning ‘low country’ and refers to the fact that much of the land is at or below sea level. Today the Netherlands is also called Holland, a name that is derived from the names of two western coastal provinces, North and South Holland. These provinces were the most developed and wealthiest parts of the country in the 17th century and they played a dominant role in the country’s history.

Geography The Netherlands is situated in the west of Europe and borders on Germany to the east, Belgium to the south and the North Sea to the north and west. This small country lies at the point where German, British and French cultures meet. What strikes people most when they first arrive in the Netherlands is the landscape: the country is extremely flat. While there are some hilly areas in the southeast corner of the country, these barely infringe on the broad, unbroken expanse of sky that is so characteristic of the Dutch landscape. Moreover, water can be found everywhere; in the form of lakes, rivers, canals and of course the sea. The parts of the

Netherlands below sea level would be flooded if there were no dikes, dunes and other fortifications. The Netherlands has a relatively small land area of slightly over 41,5 thousand square kilometres. With over 17 million inhabitants and a population density of 502 people per km2, the Netherlands is the one of the most densely populated countries in the world.

UTRECHT

Society Dutch society consists of 190+ different nationalities living in its many cities and villages. For decades, the country’s historical ties with other parts of the world have brought people of non-Dutch origin to settle in Holland, which has given the Dutch the reputation of being generally open-minded, freedom-loving and tolerant towards foreigners. This cultural diversity has made Holland a place where knowledge, ideas and cultures from all over the world come together. Although Dutch is the national language, the majority of the population also speaks English and very often another foreign language, such as German or French.

Utrecht The history of the city goes back to 47 AD when the Roman emperor Claudius ordered his general Corbulo to build a defensive line along the river Rhine, which was the most northern border of the empire. One of the strongholds (or castellum) along the river was built at a crossing in the river and was called Traiectum (which means crossing place). In the local language this became Trecht, UutTrecht (lower-Trecht) and later Utrecht. At the place where once the castellum stood now stands the Dom Church built in the 13th century. Nowadays, Utrecht is a lively city in the geographical centre of the Netherlands. It is not only an important junction where traffic, trade, distribution and services meet and mingle, but is also a true knowledge centre. In addition to the Utrecht University, the HU University of Applied Sciences and the HKU University of the Arts, the city is also home to important research institutes and several other institutions of higher education. With its 350,000 inhabitants, Utrecht is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands. With no less than 70,000 of the inhabitants being students, Utrecht is truly a student city.

Several canals crisscross the city and encircle the city centre. The Dom Tower is the focal point and the pride of the city: with a height of 112 meters, it offers a magnificent view over the city. To the south of the Dom is the city’s Museum Quarter. There you will find a varied offering of excellent museums in a setting of picturesque courtyards, unexpected small restaurants and delightful little shops.

Along the canals there is a rare phenomenon, of which Utrecht citizens are extremely proud: the wharves. These wharves, which provide direct access to cellars, were used for the loading and unloading of ships and for the storage of goods in the Middle Ages. These days, they are mostly used as outdoor terraces for restaurants and bars. Sitting by the water, you can enjoy a drink or a meal looking over the decorative lit canal.

The 20th Century: Europe in Three Wars

Dutch Culture: Society and Current Issues

Faculty of Humanities (UU)

Faculty of Humanities (UU)

When asked about the twentieth century, most people’s first association are either Hitler or the Second World War. But during the twentieth century, Europe not just experienced one, but three horrific wars: the First and Second World War, and the Cold War that followed in their wake. Oftentimes, the first half of the 20th century has therefore been labelled “The Era of Violence”, and perhaps rightly so. But this century might as well be regarded as an age of rebuilding, transatlantic collaboration, and global connections, thus making the twentieth century much more diverse.

This course will explore Dutch culture and identity by focusing on present-day Dutch society and its recent history. You will learn about typically Dutch phenomena such as the poldermodel, mobile flood barriers and windmills, and you will be taught by Utrecht lecturers on subjects such as the Dutch economy, religious diversity, (im)migration and secularization. Posthuman Knowledge(s) Faculty of Humanities (UU) The intensive course ‘Posthuman Knowledge(s)’ offers an overview of contemporary debates around the ‘posthuman turn’, in the framework of Braidotti’s brand of critical theory. It explores the implications of the posthuman convergence of posthumanism and postanthropocentrism for the constitution of subjectivity, the production of knowledge and the practice of the academic humanities. How can scholarship in the critical humanities move beyond the old dualities in which Man/Anthropos defined himself, beyond the hierarchical production of sexualized, racialized and naturalized others as excluded from humanity ? To what extent do current posthuman forms of knowledge critique anthropocentrism and Eurocentric humanism? Prof. dr. Donkey Medicine Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UU) During this course, similarities and differences between donkeys and horses are addressed, as well as their consequences for clinical practice. Veterinarian practitioners, particularly equine practitioners, are consulted by donkey owners on a regular basis for the diagnosis and treatment of their donkey(s). Although donkeys resemble horses to a certain extent, quite some differences between these species are evident as well. In this course, the relevance of these differences for optimal diagnostic and treatment protocols for donkeys in veterinary practice will be discussed, as well as typical and/or species-specific diseases and abnormalities in donkeys (including the treatment options). (Bio)Medical Research Lab

Faculty of Medicine (UU)

Faculty of Medicine (UU)

Interdisciplinary Learning in Medicine, the Arts and Humanities. Education and research in the health domain are rapidly changing. Technological advances and the democratization of knowledge i.a. challenge us to reconsider the balance between "hard science" and "soft skills" in the healthcare system. At the same time artists, artistic researchers and humanities scholars are increasingly turning to questions on well-being and care. Thus, the future of thinking about health and illness is bound to be profoundly interdisciplinary. Therefore, this course aims to encourage truly interdisciplinary collaboration between diverse student-groups interested in medicine, biomedical sciences, medical humanities and the arts.

This interdisciplinary lab course gives you a realistic insight into the life of a (bio)medical researcher. We provide advanced bachelor students (with backgrounds in medicine and/or life sciences) the opportunity to conduct authentic and real-world (bio)medical research in small interdisciplinary groups. This research is conducted in a well-equipped (wet) laboratory and focuses on urgent medical cases or ongoing translational medicine research problems. Each group will study the same hypothesis from different perspectives by applying different research methods. At the end of the course, you will write a research article and present the outcomes of your project. Corporate Governance after the Financial Crisis

Understanding and managing Mergers and Acquisitions

Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (UU)

Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (UU)

Failing Corporate governance of financial institutions has often been mentioned as an important cause of the crisis. Consequently, having a deeper understanding how Corporate boards are formed and how they act have become a topic of increasing importance. Do you want to know how corporations are directed and how we can make them perform better? This course will provide you with the answers! On top of that, we will visit the Euronext Amsterdam, the Dutch Stock Exchange, where you can practice your skills as a trader.

Many executives say they use M&A as a means to consolidate or expand the market position of their firm or increase its production efficiency. Most mergers and acquisitions, however, fail to create value, leading to the so-called ‘merger paradox’. By adopting a multidisciplinary and institutional perspective, this course aims to increase the understanding of merger determinants and effects, discusses key topics for value creation, and concludes with policy assessments. In addition, the participants will work on their negotiation skills during a workshop.

Introduction to the International Law of the Sea Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (UU) Oceans are essential for maintaining life on earth. Their resources are increasingly important to the world economy; 90% of international trade is seaborne. The current regime for the oceans is built on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 (UNCLOS). This framework convention divides the oceans in coastal state maritime zones and international areas. Product Development & Innovation with Agile Prototyping Technology and Design (HU) Prototyping is an important part of product development. A prototype gives developers and client the actual feel of a product. The road to a prototype is usually one of discussing, planning, drawing and finally prototyping. When the prototype malfunctions or has imperfections time and money is spent without result. With Agile Prototyping we take you through a short-cyclic trial-and-error make process to get from idea to a fully functional prototype in a shorter time with less costs and less risks. Agile Prototyping is a philosophy that urges you to stop using your head and start thinking with your hands. Demographics and Migration Crisis in Trump-era

The Biology of Language: Language Evolution

Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (UU)

Faculty of Humanities (UU)

Demographics, Migration Crisis in Trump-Era is a two-week summer course that examines trends in global demographics, migration and migration policies today from interdisciplinary perspectives. Shifts in demographic structures either by migration or by aging will bring challenges for human rights, social inequality, public welfare policies and cultural dilemma’s, clashing between liberal democracy and nationalism/populism (Trumpism). The course will address academic research and debates as well as policy’s dilemma’s, which are framed in e.g. pro versus anti-globalization, human rights versus nationalism or even populims and the West against the Muslim world.

Humans have ‘language’, animals do not. In this course we investigate on the basis of what evidence we can make such a claim. What exactly is language? Can we can say that animals do not have a faculty for language? Does language development in humans differ fundamentally from that in other animals, like in chimps? When we compare the development in songbirds and humans, do we find surprising parallels, like the learning of complex patterns of vocalization? Central to this course will be the comparative perspective from evolutionary biology on language.

Entrepreneurial Marketing: How Small Firms Can Win

New Financing Models in a Changing World

Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (UU)

Economics and Management (HU)

Small and medium sized firms (SMEs) face different challenges than their large counterparts. For example, their marketing expertise and budgets are different. This calls for a different way to market their products and services. The main theme during this course will be how Small and medium sized firms can create competitive advantage with the limited marketing resources they possess.

Since the credit crisis in 2008, banks are focused on improving their image and balance sheets. The standards for providing loans have been raised so far that SMEs hardly can fund new investments. Startups have difficulties in raising funds. This trend will continue and therefore small and medium sized companies are sourcing their funds in alternative ways. We also see other financial institutions starting innovations. In short the financial world is changing and new models of financing will conquer the world.
