Welcome to Utrecht Summer School I am delighted to present to you the Utrecht Summer School programme for 2016. This year, we will once again be offering a great variety of academic summer courses, to students from all over the world. We are proud to present various new and challenging courses that differ in subject, level and duration. For example, the number of courses offered in the field of Law and Economics and Social Sciences has increased considerably. We are pleased that our excellent cooperation with the Hogeschool Utrecht (University of Applied Sciences) and with the HKU (University of the Arts Utrecht) is yet again reflected in a number of summer courses. This year, we will be working together with a wide selection of partners throughout the Netherlands. Furthermore, we are extremely pleased with the outstanding collaboration with our international partners and the resulting courses not only in Utrecht, but also in several other cities around the world. With over 120 nationalities working and studying closely together, students learn to work in an international environment from the start, which is essential for scientists in an increasingly globalized world. Here we are at the start of the 30th edition of Utrecht Summer School! I am very excited for you to see what the summer school has to offer in 2016. Our course offer is tremendously varied and contains over 200 courses, in all of the university’s faculties and ranging from bachelor to PhD level. Whether you are a PhD student concerned with medicine, a bachelor student with a keen interest in art history, or a student looking to learn the Dutch language and culture; we have a course that suits your needs. Our course offer also contains an international part. We work together with universities in Italy, Germany and Russia. The Utrecht Summer School ambition is to offer an up-to-date course programme where important economic, social, cultural and political issues are thoroughly studied and discussed. Our summer courses deal with important innovative subjects such as the Financial Crisis, Future Food, Game Research, Future Deltas, Neuroscience and many other more. The Netherlands The Dutch combine history and traditional culture with innovation, modernism and an international orientation. While Holland likes to emphasize its highly industrialized features, the Dutch have not let go of their background, often making use of the possibility to go for a quiet stroll along the historic canals that run through town. Holland, or the Netherlands The Netherlands is a kingdom. Its official name is the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It consists of the Netherlands itself and Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, in the Caribbean Sea. The country’s name in Dutch is Nederland, meaning ‘low country’ and referring to the fact that much of the land is at or below sea level. The Netherlands (Nederland) therefore means ‘low country’. Today the Netherlands is also called ’Holland‘, a name that is derived from the names of two western coastal provinces, North and South Holland. These provinces were the most developed and wealthiest parts of the country in the seventeenth century and they played a dominant role in the country’s history.

Geography Holland is situated in the west of Europe and borders Germany to the east, Belgium to the south and the North Sea to the north and west. This small country lies at the point where the German, British and French cultures meet. What strikes people most when they first arrive in Holland is the landscape: the country is extremely flat. While there are some hilly areas in the southeast corner of the country, even these barely infringe on the broad, unbroken expanse of sky that is so characteristic of the Dutch landscape. Moreover, water can be found everywhere, in the form of lakes, rivers, canals and the sea. The parts of the Netherlands below sea level would be flooded if there were no dikes, dunes and other fortifications. Holland’s relatively small area of slightly over 41,000 square kilometers. With 16.5 million inhabitants a population density of 499 people per km2, the Netherlands is the most densely populated country of the European Union. Society Dutch society is made up of over 190 different nationalities living in its many cities and villages. For decades, the country’s historical

ties with other parts of the world has brought people of non-Dutch origin to settle in Holland, which makes the Dutch generally openminded, freedom loving and tolerant towards foreigners. This cultural diversity has made Holland a place where knowledge, ideas and cultures from all over the world come together. Although Dutch is the national language, the majority of the population also speaks English and very often another foreign language, such as German or French. Mentality The Netherlands is a ‘self-service country’. The Dutch try to manage most things themselves, which makes them very independent and organized. Another distinctive characteristic of the Dutch is their openness and direct manner of acting and speaking. You will notice that you can say exactly what is on your mind, as the Dutch are not easily offended. Dutch society is organized in a nonhierarchical way. For example, teachers tend to be very accessible and true interlocutors for their students. You will be on familiar terms with everybody in almost no time.

Utrecht The history of the city goes back to 47 AD when the Roman emperor Claudius ordered his general Corbulo to build a defensive line along the river Rhine, which was the northern most border of the empire. One of the strongholds (or Castella) along the river was built at a crossing in the river and was called Traiectum (which means crossing place). In the local language this became Trecht, UutTrecht (lower-Trecht) and later Utrecht. At the place where once the castellum stood now stands the Dom church built in the 13th century. Nowadays, Utrecht is a lively city in the geographical centre of the Netherlands. It is not only an important junction where traffic, trade, distribution and services meet and mingle, but also a true knowledge centre: apart from Utrecht University and the HU University of Applied Sciences, it houses important research institutes and several other institutes of higher education. With its 300,000 inhabitants, Utrecht is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands and with no less than 70,000 of the inhabitants being students; Utrecht is a true student city.

magnificent view over the city. To the south of the Dom is the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s museum quarter. There you will find a varied offering of excellent museums in a setting of picturesque courtyards, unexpected small restaurants and delightful little shops. Along the canals you will find a rare phenomenon, of which Utrecht citizens are extremely proud: the wharves. These wharves, which provide direct access to cellars, were used for the loading and unloading of ships and the storage of goods in the Middle Ages. These days, they are mostly used as outdoor terraces for restaurants. Sitting by the water, you can enjoy a drink or a meal looking over the decorative lit canal.

Utrecht Summer School The Utrecht Summer School started in 1987, with one course: Dutch Culture and Society. In the last two decades, the summer school developed a broad selection of over 200 courses in virtually all disciplines Utrecht University, HU University of Applied Sciences and HKU University of the Arts have on offer. In 2015, Utrecht Summer School attracted almost 3300 students from over 120 different countries; as such it is the largest academic summer school in Europe. The programme is characterised by strong, academic courses in a variety of subjects. For most of the courses ECTS credits are rewarded. Utrecht Summer School aims to provide its participants with an unforgettable stay in Utrecht and the Netherlands. Therefore, parallel to the study programme, a social programme has been set up which includes excursions, sports, social gatherings and festivities. Utrecht Summer School is a cooperation between Utrecht University, HU University of Applied Sciences and HKU University of the Arts.

Higher education in the Netherlands Utrecht University (UU) With about 30.000 students, Utrecht University is the largest and the most renowned university in the Netherlands. Utrecht University is a research university comprising of seven faculties which collectively span the entire academic spectrum in teaching and research. Founded in 1636, the University is now a modern, leading institute enjoying a growing international reputation. In the prestigious Shanghai Academic Rankings of World Universities 2015, Utrecht University ranks 1st in the Netherlands, 17th in Europe and 56th worldwide. The university has also been ranked as 34th worldwide by the Taiwan Ranking, published by the Higher Education Evaluation & Accreditation Council. Utrecht University offers a broad range of 45 undergraduate and 138 graduate programmes, the latter including many English-taught programmes. There are more than 30,000 students at Utrecht University and over 6,000 members of staff. HU University of Applied Sciences (HU) Hogeschool Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (HU) was founded in 1995, the result of a merger of several independent institutions. The HU is the third largest university of applied sciences in the Netherlands. It has over 40,000 students (including 1200 international students) with more than one hundred different nationalities. The HU offers a wide range of courses spread out over nine principal themes. Most of the 80 programmes lead to a Bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree, and some lead to a Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree. Several programmes are taught in English.

All courses are geared towards the practical aspects of the disciplines and the teaching is competence based with the emphasis on professional skills and work placements. More information: www.international.hu.nl HKU University of the Arts Utrecht (HKU) HKU University of the Arts Utrecht is the largest educational institution for arts, culture and media in the Netherlands, and one of the largest in Europe. Located in Utrecht, HKU has 4000 BA, MA and research students taking part in nine bachelor programmes and six master programmes of which three in English validated by the UK Open University.

The student accommodations that are reserved for Summer School students are located throughout the city. All accommodations are situated within easily accessible distances from various educational institutions. The accommodations are in the University centre â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the Uithofâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, in the city centre of Utrecht or its suburbs. All student rooms are fully furnished. Depending on the accommodation, apartments either include fully fitted kitchens or offer a system of room & board. The rooms are single or double rooms with shared facilities. In your residence kitchen you can find everything you need to cook a nice meal.

The Utrecht Summer School generally tries to house students from one course in the same accommodation. Students from other courses might be housed together in the same building as well, which gives you the great opportunity to meet international students from other disciplines. Additionally, a few courses will be taught by and at University College Roosevelt in the south-west province of Zeeland, by the sea. Also in Middelburg we provide student accommodation. More information about housing in Middelburg can be found on our website. Booking a private room If you want to be sure that you will be staying in a private hotel room, or if you want to bring a friend or spouse with you to share your room with, we recommend you to book a room in a hotel in Utrecht. We selected a few hotels for you, situated in the city center and where you can book a single or double room at special rates for students attending the Utrecht Summer School programme. More information can be found on our website. Accommodation abroad Utrecht Summer School offers a wide range of summer courses abroad. We are currently working together with universities in China, Russia, Estonia, Germany, Italy and more. Our university partners provide accommodation facilities to students. Social programme Utrecht Summer School not only offers you a fine selection of interesting courses in all kinds of disciplines, it also intends to give the participants an unforgettable stay.

Therefore we invite all students during the months July and August to an attractive social programme, which includes excursions, sports, social gatherings and festivities. To give you an impression; last year’s programme contained excursions throughout the Netherlands, night canoeing through the canals downtown Utrecht, a cycling tour through the countryside around Utrecht, a pub quiz, and (guided) trips to famous museums. These activities will provide the perfect setting for you to meet international students from other summer school courses and to get to know your class mates better! Sports card The University sports centre Olympos offers a special membership card during the summer. For only € 14,50 (duration of 1 month), participants of the Utrecht Summer school can make unlimited use of sport and courses facilities. Sportcentrum Olympos boasts topclass facilities: there are 4 squash courts and a well-equipped fitness centre. Outdoor facilities include nine all-weather tennis courts. The Olympos Sports Bar (Sportcafé Olympos) offers a varied menu of food and beverages at very reasonable prices. Visit one of the parties or watch an exciting sports event on the big-screen TV.

This course will explore the question of Dutch culture and identity by focussing on both its society and its present-day and future issues and placing it in a global perspective. You will learn about typically Dutch characteristics as the poldermodel, mobile flood barrieres and windmills and you will be taught by prominent Utrecht lecturers on subjects such as Dutch economy, religious diversity, (im)migration and secularization. An excursion is included in which we will take you , among others, to The Hague to visit the Binnenhof; the square that forms the very heart of Dutch government.

But during the twentieth century, Europe not just experienced one, but three horrific wars: the First and Second World War and the Cold War that followed in their wake. Oftentimes, the first half of the 20th century has therefore been labelled ‘The Era of Violence’, and perhaps rightly so. But this century might as well be regarded as an age of rebuilding, transatlantic collaboration, and global connections, thus making the twentieth century much more diverse. Anne Frank, the teenager who was forced to go into hiding in war-time Amsterdam, probably more than anyone else, gave a face to these Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Her diary became one of the canonical texts of the twentieth century, and it is still felt to address the universal drama of persecution and human dignity. This course introduces you not only to the phenomenon of Holocaust but also to other genocides that shocked Modern Europe. Entrepreneurship is usually associated with the startup of new ventures. In this fourth course in the track ‘Entrepreneurial Side of Business’, we will investigate the intersection between ‘traditional’ strategic management and entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship can be used as a strategic tool in order to infuse large and established organizations with the flexibility and innovation that is usually associated with small organizations. Entrepreneurship in large and established organizations is also called strategic entrepreneur or corporate entrepreneurship.

If you ask an entrepreneur what skills or knowledge have to be developed in their company, most entrepreneurs will answer ‘marketing’. Most marketing courses however focus on larger firms even though the marketing strategies do not seem applicable to smaller entrepreneurial forms with smaller budgets. The main theme during this course will be how small and medium sized firms (SMEs) can create competitive advantage with the limited marketing resources they possess. Some knowledge on (traditional) marketing is nice to have but not necessary for this course.

This course deals with the effects of Financial and Securities Law on the global and European Economy, and vice versa. The Credit Crunch was caused by, amongst others, an inefficient regulation of securitization (of mortgage products) and poor governance of banks. The Eurocrisis showed the effects of the lack of rules and tools on the European economy. By way of lectures, participation in workshops and writing a paper, participants get insights in these issues while formulating solutions for a more sustainable financial system.

This course deals with the effects of European Competition Law on the behavior of businesses in the European Union (EU). An effective common market within the EU requires a fair and undistorted competition. Hence the European Commission (EC) vigorously attacks cartels. A recent example is the ‘cooperation’ between seven international groups of companies – Chungwa, LG Electronics, Philips, Samsung SDI, Panasonic, Toshiba, MTPD (currently a Panasonic subsidiary) and Technicolor (formerly Thomson) – which fixed prices, shared markets, allocated customers between themselves and restricted their output. Many executives say they use M&A as a means to consolidate or expand the market position of their firm or increase its productive efficiency. Most mergers and acquisitions, however, fail to create value, leading to the so-called ‘merger paradox’. By adopting a multidisciplinary and institutional perspective, this course aims to increase the understanding of merger determinants and effects, discusses key topics for value creation, and concludes with policy assessments. On the last day the students will participate in a negotiation training workshop and will present their papers on a major M&A transaction in their home country.

As an advanced training in qualitative and legal methods in criminology, the course aims to be a platform for PhD students preparing or conducting their criminological fieldwork, to discuss the methodological challenges within their research projects. Today's society is confronted with ever increasing health care costs. One of the factors in these rising costs are the cost of drug innovations. Diseases waiting for therapeutic solutions, are complicated and multifactorial in nature. As a result, drug innovation has become even more complex leading to high tech and therefore high cost solutions. The question arises, what is the added value of such high cost innovations and how can it be determined when both benefit and harm are considered. Health economics, and more specific pharmacoeconomics aims to provide a neutral scientific approach to this challenge. This course provides a broad perspective of the field of health economics (specific pharmacoeconomics), including a variety of subjects from views of the different stakeholders to more in depth methodological approaches, illustrated with examples and exercises.

With the prospect that innovative drug therapies will be introduced in the coming years, society demands new approaches and concepts for comparative risk/ benefit evaluation. Assessment of safety and risk management of different drug therapies is done in the framework of observational epidemiological studies This is the logical next step after randomized clinical trials, which are designed to provide evidence of a drug ‘efficacy’. The course will cover key issues in pharmacoepidemio-logic and drug safety research. Students will learn about the typical problems (e.g. confounding by indication, rare side effects) and approaches to deal with these problems in the practice of pharmacoepidemiology. Translational medicine, the process of translating ideas from bench to bedside, is failing. To solve this colossal problem at the heart of biomedical science it is necessary to train and educate a new generation of translational scientists who understand how the science system works and who are equipped with the right skills and competences. Migration has made European countries ethnically and culturally more diverse. While migrants try to find their way in a new and sometimes hostile environment, host populations also have to adapt to migrants and the new religious and cultural diversity they bring with them. Migrants and host populations face the challenge of acceptance and adaptation in spite of initial resistance, possible social exclusion and explicit political rejection by part of the host population. We discuss social scientific theories and empirical research on international migration, the integration of immigrants and their children, and reactions of the host society.

Conflict management has become a prominent field of inquiry and practice in three main areas: scholarly, policy-oriented, and operational. In this setting, the course aims to enhance understanding of violent conflict and conflict management. The sessions deal with the recent cases of Afghanistan, Lebanon, Liberia, the Sudans, Sri Lanka and Uganda as illustrative examples, but also study other conflicts around the world. This course focuses on sustainable management of river deltas, that are increasingly under pressure of climate change and human impacts. Deltas are valuable areas, providing many services that are essential for humans such as fertile soils, fresh water, (river) transportation networks, low-relief accessible land, water purification and support of high biodiversity. Because of all these benefits hundreds of millions of people live in deltas worldwide, often in mega-cities.

Large-scale acquisition of land in the global South has received a great deal of interest in the last few years. Especially following the food crisis (2003-08), and stimulated by the growing demand for biofuels, pressure on land continues to increase. This course provides a multidisciplinary analysis of the ‘land rush’ within the more general context of land governance in Africa, Asia and Latin America: the history and drivers, the diversity of stakeholders and networks involved, the urgency and current challenges, and innovative governance solutions. Introduction to L1 and L2 acquisition

Ask someone their opinion on bilingualism and you're likely to hear statements such as: learning two languages from birth confuses children and impairs their cognitive development', 'Bilingual children can't speak either of their two languages properly' or 'You can only become bilingual if you start acquiring your second language as a young child.' Though common currency among the general public, each of these statements is in fact a myth. In this course, you will discover why this is the case as we review some of the most important findings from the research on bilingual children.

Human language is complex and results from interacting simpler systems, which each may have had a long evolutionary history of its own. Nevertheless, the way these modules are integrated into a working system has been novel as well as recent. Relevant issues that will be addressed in this course include: uniquely human and/or linguistic; evaluation of core properties of human language from gestural or vocal systems of animal communication; evaluation gradual or saltational and exaptive; the primary function of language as communication or an efficient way of organising cognitive systems.

In this course, students will be introduced to the basics of the theoretical framework evolved from and based on Chomsky (1981). One of Chomsky’s main innovations was to give linguistics the formal tools to study language. The formal tools of generative linguistics enabled linguists to explore the complex system underlying sentence structure and sentence meaning. The theory accounts for the creativity of human language, the characteristic that makes it unlike the communication system of any other animal. Topics covered will include the major concepts used to analyze linguistic phenomena, such as phrase structure, movement, binding, and logical form. Prof. dr. This course introduces you to the theory and practice of alternative primary schools. It is very interesting for student teachers as well as for starting professionals: You will find out what kind of teacher you want to be. You will discuss different views on learning and on the development of children and what this means for the school system. In the Netherlands you find schools in a great variety of pedagogical-educational concepts. Through expert meetings, school visits and workshops you will find out about the characteristics of these concepts. What can you use at your own school at home?

The course is based on a total survey error perspective and discusses the major sources of survey error. Participants will be presented with tools for detection and adjustment of such errors. Analysis methods are introduced using both SPSS and R. Topics include complex sampling, nonresponse adjustment, measurement error, analysis of incomplete data and advanced use of administrative data. Special attention will be given to the analysis of complex surveys that include weighting, stratification and design effects.
