Utility Transmission Survey Solutions LiDar Brochure

LiDAR LiDAR technology is a surveying technique that is used to map out areas of great density that are difficult to access. For example, rivers, railway lines and heavily vegetated areas such as forests. Such is its ability to ‘see through’ vegetation that it’s even been used by archaeologists in the Amazonian Rainforest to investigate the ruins of ancient indigenous communities.

How Does It Work?

LiDAR uses laser guided technology to determine ranges by targeting an object and measuring the time it takes for the reflected light to return to the receiver. This allows accurate ground data to be captured and for a digital surface model to be produced.

Why Is It Useful?

Not only is LiDAR useful for surveyors, but it also removes a large amount of human risk. Trying to gather images close to hazards is dangerous. LiDAR allows this risk to be lowered through with the use of unmanned aerial vehicles.

How Is It Deployed?

The payload is usually mounted to either a helicopter or a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). This gives us more control and the ability to reach areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. At UTSS, we use drone mounted LiDAR.

Case Study – Western Power Issue

Western Power Distribution asked us to obtain detailed topographical data of the busy M50 motorway for an 11kv overhead line survey which had a corridor of dense vegetation on one side of the carriageway.

Our Approach

We used a LiDAR payload to obtain all the necessary imagery on the M50 with no disruption to traffic and without anyone having to set foot onto the motorway. • • • •

No road closures No lane closures No expensive traffic management No upset to road users or putting operatives on live carriageways

LiDAR scan showing the M50 motorway and surrounding vegetation (above) and with the vegetation removed (below) to show the contours of the surrounding land.

Without LiDAR it would have been very difficult to map the surrounding area. This could have resulted with inaccurate data causing issues with further vegetation management along with putting others at risk. We provide surveying solutions across the UK for multiple sectors including construction, quarry, utility, energy, and rail. For more information on LiDAR and how it could help you please contact us.
